I don't think we can agree on that. As it stands, it is a needless wall that occurs late in the trial. I don't think the requirement should be to ensure that 1/4 of the league has strong debuffs.

Oh, and something else that needs to be fixed:

But, we also wanted to strike a balance between that difficulty and accessibility. We needed to design something that both casual and hardcore players wanted to complete and could complete, an incarnate trial that was not too complicated, but not too simple -- a "just right" Goldilocks design.
Except that isn't happening at the moment.

Designing to help balance team composition
Except that PUGs seldom, if ever, can choose team composition, especially since it requires Lore & Destiny unlocks.

    Quote:
The lesson we learned is a not a new one, but still a fundamental one for good design: Limit complexity to situations that call for it. Don't add it to every encounter for its own sake.
Need to apply the same lesson to the Tyrant fight. Light wells and Zeus Lightning every 30 seconds (on top of massive particle effects that don't always show for everyone), and a shifting regen bonus for the AV all the while trying to keep an eye on level shift (which apparently doesn't always shift the entire league) is, in a word, complex.

    Quote:
We wanted to make Tyrant immensely powerful right out of the gate, but we also wanted to make sure the fight could be completed by pickup Leagues as long as they all met the entry requirements.
Yes, tell that to all the failed leagues. So the entry requirements are that a player has unlocked but not necessarily slotted Lore and Destiny. This could mean that they are +0 (completely unslotted) vs a level 54+6 AV. Taking the light wells out lasts under 30 seconds, so that bonus doesn't last long.

But I agree that the level shifts should be noticeable without having to monitor your attributes (some visual effect). If they are not zone wide, there should be some indicator of where you have to be to get them. I tried all sorts of different things and sometimes I got a shift per pillar, and sometimes I got none. I don't know what controlled it or why, and that's not cool.
My thoughts exactly. Those level shifts, as explained by Arbiter Hawk:

Clearly it isn't affecting the entire league properly.

This was from April 23. I can tell you that looking at the patch notes that his Regeneration bonus from Favor of the Well hasn't been tweaked.

I don't think you'd disagree that the level shifts should be zone/league wide and that the shifts should be noticeable, am I right?

And none of this excuses pushing the -regen resist change live without testing (I just checked all the beta patch notes and it wasn't in any of them) to see if changing the -regen resist with the other changes was actually good for the trial.

I want to especially focus on this point.

There are reports that destroying a Well of Light doesn't give a league wide level shift. The same reports are saying that the buff is only for the team that kills the light, and even then only in an AoE centered on the light. If these reports are accurate, then they should be fixed.

Ideally, what should happen is that for each Well of Light that is defeated, Tyrant should have his level shift reduced. After all, we aren't empowering ourselves. By severing Tyrant's access to the well we are supposed to be making HIM weaker, not ourselves stronger.

Numbers don't lie. And the number of seconds to defeat Tyrant was less than the number of seconds to defeat Black Swan.

And Black Swan isn't difficult at all.

It was empirically too easy for the second most powerful being in Praetoria.
And the developers, as usual, went overboard in correcting the issue. See my next point.

Yeah... About that. Wasn't it found out that Tyrant's regeneration could be brought to zero during those runs? So after repeatedly bumping up the damage, adding a level shift, and tightening up the timing the developers left all the previous changes in difficulty and then capped his regen debuff resistance. Oh, and then never bothered to even test it.

    Good job there.

Actually, no. People have said the same thing about Underground, MoM, and DD. Guess what? Underground is still rarely run on some servers, Minds of Mayhem might as well not exist (no one on triumph is even using it to farm the nightmares anymore), and the last two DD trials (the only two that I've seen since March and I actually had to lead them) failed because I went against my better judgement and accepted people that didn't have +3 to the trials.

More to the point, we have trials with wildly different levels of difficulty. Instead of what we had with the Alpha tasks (most of them are being done equally), what we have with BAF on is a progression that nearly has to be done sequentially.

    Actually, it requires several things:
    • Indications of player level shift status when the lights are defeated. I monitor my level shift. I couldn't see me being any more effective no matter the status of the lights. Instead of changing the level shifts of the players, destroying the lights should reduce Tyrant's level shifts.
    • Indication of using regular attacks vs the lights. Every time I looked, some scrapper was trying to melee a light, even after repeated warnings that it would do no good.
    • Indication as to what the quills should be used for. Again, despite many explanations, people didn't know what to do with them. A couple people couldn't even find the power for several minutes.
    • Indication as to what the hospital penalty is in the final battle.
Every single one of these indications is a developer failure.

    Edit:

The vocal hardcore said that the next trial would be "easier". This is clearly bunk. These are the same people that left us with two nearly unplayed trials already (Underground and MoM are seldom played on some servers) and because of their arrogance Keyes had to be nerfed to the extreme to get players to actually do the trial on a regular basis.

    Edit:
    My feedback from Beta stands:

And this is what completely ticks me off about the Incarnate Trials. Despite people claiming otherwise, the next trial will be more difficult. Why? It is because of how the trials are set up right now.

Instead of having several Incarnate Trials of equal strength, what we have is an Incarnate Trial Arc consisting of Apex -> Tin Mage -> BAF -> Lambda -> Keyes -> Underground -> TPN -> MoM -> DD -> Magisterium. We've already been told that the future content is supposed to be even more difficult thanks to the fact that we will have to deal with Praetorian Hami and the coming Battalion, not to mention what comes after. They are set on a course of progressively more difficult Trials, and likely will be for the next year at least.

This is exactly the wrong course for the average player. This is the wrong course for what is supposed to be the star content for a game that has built its reputation on being casual-friendly. People are leaving the game faster than new players are coming in. My global friends list has fewer and fewer players active as time goes on. The same can be said of the global channels I belong to.

Look at the alpha incarnate tasks: LGTF, ITF, STF, RSF, Cuda, Khan, CoP, Hami Raids, and Mothership Raids. They are all relatively equal to each other in terms of difficulty (though Cuda is the most tricky of the group, and Hami requires the most people). Players are still actively doing most of those across all servers. The same can't be said about the iTrials.

Incarnate Trials are niche content. All the developers are doing by increasing the difficulty is reducing the amount of players willing to put up with the trials.

That openness has always been a huge draw for this game.
This is a point that seems to be continually lost on the development team and by a number of beta players.

People kept attacking the lights with regular powers. The temp power is NOT explained properly. And even WITH the pop-up tray, people were asking where the power was.

The trial was fun during early beta. It now isn't. That is a failure on the developer's part.

    Almost.

Anyone who had Statesman's Pal (from either Hero's Hero or Hero's Epic) would have to run Hero's Epic again to get Posi's Pal. As of today, Hero's Epic does not award Statesman's Pal. To get Statesman's Pal, you have to run Hero's Hero.

If someone had SP TF badge, they would need to run Yin's TF to get the new badge as well.

This follows the long rule that any new badges that get put into the game have to fulfill their requirements after the badge started counting. In this case both Positron's Pal and the Yin TF badge started counting today, so you need to earn them from today on. Of course this doesn't apply to badges that were just modified (like the Master of Statesman badge).

I hope this clears things up.

The badge is NOT removed. It is renamed. Big difference.

If they did as you suggest, then we'd have to go through the same un-fun (for many players) activity again for NO GOOD REASON. On the whole, the developers would get far more complaints if they did as you suggest and make a new Master of Ms. Liberty and left the Master of Statesman badge for a flashback.

At any rate, it is kind of pointless to argue about it as it is going live tomorrow as it currently stands (no STF in flashback, only one "Master of" badge for Stateman's TF/Ms. Liberty TF). At most they have to change "Back Alley Brawler" to "Ms. Liberty".

        • Location - 161 yards due west of Lamplight Junction marker, at the entrance to the CTA building (marker is invisible).
        • Completion text - You've managed to push your way through the teeming crowd of displaced souls in an effort to get a ticket out of Night Ward - only to find that there ain't no train a-comin'. Unlike the dead, however this does little to faze you. After all, if creatures keep finding ways in there must be other ways out.
      • Dead But Dreaming - (901.0, 22.3, 1997.0)
        • Location - The Sleeping Beast, 404 yards north of The Howling Vale, in front of a Seedling husk.
        • Completion text - The final resting place of the Seed of Hamidon radiates a chill that permeates even Night Ward. In spite of this you take comfort in knowing that Night Ward is beyond Hamidon's reach. But to those denizens unfamiliar with the events leading to the fall of First Ward, this skull-shaped husk is an object of superstition and trepidation. It seems that even in death the Seed continues to spread its influence.
      • Follow the Light - (1276.0, 49.0, -2134.0)
        • Location - In The Arcane Quarter, right next to Mistress of Fate.
        • Completion text - You have discovered the first of many lighted paths in Night Ward. The Carnival of Light has been working tirelessly to hold the darkness of this realm at bay by way of their protective luster. With the light as your guide you are free to traverse Night Ward's darkest corners, undetected by the countless dangers that heed her call.
      • Monolithic - (-2604.5, 74.7, 2031.5)
        • Location - 464 yds SSE of the The Digs marker, in the middle of a circle of stones.
        • Completion text - As you set foot in this peculiar stone circle you can feel ancient magics coursing through your veins. The source of its power remains a mystery - as well it should. Night Ward harbors many secrets too awesome, too transcendent for the mortal mind to behold. To merely be counted among those touched by her radiance is in itself a humbling experience.
      • Stargazer - (178.5, 943.3, -227.0)
        • Location - 432 yards NNE from the The City of Souls marker, atop that one tall building
        • Completion text - Throwing caution aside you reach the uppermost point of Night Ward. Here, scattered spirits soar overhead like shooting stars in the night sky, forever doomed to the limbo of Night Ward as she drifts ever further from the land of the dead.

I just checked by transferring my badge character to the test server. I did NOT get either Yin's TF badge or Positron's Pal. I also know that this character has done both the Hero's Hero and Hero's Epic Arcs.
