In other words, it hasn't been discussed with the community moderation team, and at least one member of the community moderation team would be against the change.

Those decisions would be made higher up. No disrespect to Mod8, but that's above his pay grade.

I am, however, glad that he's come out on the right side publicly.

Thirdly Blizard have stated they will be clamping down and forcing people to use their actual identity for accounts. How they are going to enforce this I do not know, but they seem to be sure they can do so.
I guess they'll have to require a credit card, then. Otherwise, my game time card that I bought from bestbuy.com says my name is John Smith.

    Sign em up!

It's easy. Last I heard, there was a bot that'd do it for you... hit something like 30-40 of these services in 5 minutes.

Sure, they can dispute the charges on the next bill, but the phone company says you gotta dispute it with EACH of the separate service companies... not them. And you can bet those services have STELLAR customer support availability... and that they probably already charged for the NEXT month by the time you get through... and even if they're gonna be refunded, your phone company will be charging you fees if you don't pay the current bill in full....

Yeah. Traceable crank calls... too much work.

In other words... The people most likely to support you are saying you are an idiot. More than likely you are an idiot.

We, CoH, WoW, STO, are the most likely to support Blizzard, and are saying Blizzard is an idiot. more than likely Blizzard is an idiot.
So... what you're saying is that it would be sensible if the degree of openness in a community dictated its general response to a wholesale violation of its privacy, but since those open communities are the ones who are saying they do not like it...

Still a quite suspect argument, I think.

Yes... I am known by recognition to some members of the community here; I've attended some informal get-togethers in California of people on the Virtue server.

Of those people, only a very few know my full name: I was generally referred to as Smersh. Those who do know my full name are people I consider to be close friends now, and they did not learn my name at said get-together.

I suppose they could have taken down my license plate and found out, but that's a relatively higher barrier than my name being publicly broadcast.

Sorry, Dur, your argument lacks merit.

Under Blizzard's system, they'd be effectively anonymous, hiding behind a pseudonym, and regular rule-abiding folks wouldn't.

It's like the gun control argument, really. Outlaw anonymity, and only outlaws will be anonymous.

Castle: Powers guy and EULA lawyer!
  8. And that makes Blizzard's new policy better... how?
  9. I've been very careful about my identity online... using pipl.com, I was not able to come up with much about myself. A couple of mentions in my college newspaper, and a few previous addresses. Not my current one, though. Didn't see my current phone number, but I won't say for a fact that it isn't out there.

However, my name is unique. That's a function of my last name, which is held by fewer than twenty people within the United States. My first name, being a standard-type American name, means that it is not used in my country of origin. The only other person who occasionally uses the name is my grandfather, who uses my first name as a nickname on occasion.

I don't share my name online if I can help it, and so far it has worked.

Trying a search for Smersh won't get you all that far, either.

However, searching for my real name can find my wife's livejournal, which has pictures and email addresses and the date of our wedding, and all sorts of other info which might be used in a social engineering attempt.

    Just some data points.

I think Blizzard is really making a mistake here, and should be held accountable if anything untoward happens to one of their users because of information garnered from their forums.

To those who are interested in WoW: All I can say is to use a false name, and game time cards. That won't help anyone who is already signed up with the service, though.

*shakes head* My data is mine to give out as I see fit, it is not for you to sell and make a profit from.
  10. From a purely theorycrafting perspective, I would think that Electric/Fire would be a good bet for a (slow) AV killer. Fire melee has the highest damage output, and electric armor has tools to manage endurance in Energize and Power Sink, and a damage aura to help keep up the DPS. Also, don't discount Lightning Reflexes.

That said, Elec/Fire would have no sources of soft mitigation, but those are notoriously unreliable against AVs when the PToD are up.

Elec/Stone might be worth a look, too.

    /theorycraft off
  11. You might consider slotting the Razzle Dazzle: Chance for Immobilize proc into a few of your attacks - it might make Burn a more viable option.
  12. Here's the best I was able to come up with, soft-capped plus the medicine pool.

I don't think it's a great build, as it's relatively expensive, yet still does not provide huge amounts of either +recovery or haste.

Yes, that's possible, though my very quick attempt ended up at only 44.7% AoE defense, and the build is very tight, very ugly, and not really all that cheap. Last time I looked, Touch of Death and Obliterations were pretty expensive.
  14. Soft cap would be my vote. /SR with just soft-capped defense is quite durable, and shields has resistances to back it up with.

Or, to put it another way, you'd take double the amount of damage from melee attacks than you would if you had soft-capped melee defenses.

Soft-cap means that the occasional green will top you off. On the other hand, your alternate build would mean that the occasional purple would top you off.
  15. The short version:

It's not you, it's the Rularuu.

No amount of defense* will stop them from hitting you.

You have to kill them first. It's easier if you bring a team. Even the greys can put the hurt on you if you're not paying attention.

I highly suggest ganking greys for the badge.

*Not technically true, but no amount of defense that it is practical to achieve on a regular basis will do the trick.

Obliteration is great for Shield Charge, because the recharge is so long and Obliteration has so much of it.

However, if the endurance is a factor, may I suggest the much cheaper Multistrike? It also comes with a pair of positional defense bonuses at the 5th and 6th slot.

    kat/ela?

Heck, I've considered rerolling my Katana/Fire as a Katana/Electric, because I have so much fun on my spines/electric.

Too bad she was level 35 when they announced they were porting electric to scrappers, and pacted to my wife's DB/Fire.

    So, I probably won't have a katana/electric anytime soon.

I say go for it, it should be a very nice combo to play.

Slot with SOs or basic IOs until you can afford better.

With my fire/rad, I was able to cook entire hazard zone spawns with DOs and inspirations. Go into Dark Astoria and cook some zombies over easy. Run a few TFs.

It's the usual way of making money in the game.

The first half of that construction is ridiculous because receiving a tell has none of the social connotations or physical awkwardness of any of the analogies people have tried to use. Receiving a tell doesn't place any burden on you to do anything at all, either literally or in the social context of the game. That is why it is different than, say, a co-worker who you are obligated to act cordially toward inviting themselves along on an outing.
It's okay to send tells to everyone in Wentworths asking for influence, because receiving a tell doesn't place any burden on you to do anything at all, either literally or in the social context of the game.

It's okay for RMT spammers to send you tells about their website, because receiving a tell doesn't place any burden on you to do anything at all, either literally or in the social context of the game.

It's okay to send tells to everyone in Pocket D asking if they want to cyber, because receiving a tell doesn't place any burden on you to do anything at all, either literally or in the social context of the game.

    I find your construction lacking.

Yeah someone on a public playground walking over to you while you playing Chess, or whatever, and asking if they can join your Kickball game is.. well not necessarily rude just completely stupid.

But that isn't what you original post is about. No one sent you a tell and said "Hey I have a level 60 Warrior-Mage on WOW can I join your team?" A player with the proper AT and powersets to function on a team in COH contacted you and asked if your team had any available slots and IF so could he or she join.

At this point I think it's obvious no matter what anyone says to try and make you see some reason you have your own mindset and while it is perfectly okay for you to recruit sending tells to players asking, perhaps even begging them, to join your team. Players attempting to contact you to try and join are somehow rude and evil. In a previous post responding to one me you state you ONLY contact players solo and supposedly in public areas but that doesn't mean they aren't occupied and could be just as annoyed by you as you are by them. Wentworths is a public area with tons of people buying or selling recipes and salvage. The Tailors shops are public areas with the same flow of players in an out as they design new costumes. For all you know a player, like myself since I am a badger, is soloing as they run from zone to zone picking up all the new exploration badges for the accoldaes and merit and has NO desire to be disturbed or to join YOUR team. They could be in Skyway or Perez street hunting Clockwork to get the last badge they need to earn the Freedom Phalanx accolade or in Striga hunting down the few remaining Warwolves and Vamprii they need for Slayer and Silver Bullet after a Moonfire TF so they can get the Atlas Medallion.

In other word you assume that because a player isn't on a 7 or 8 man team they aren't doing ANYTHING and should be more than happy to join you and your team. In MY opinion that's rude and assumes anything I may be doing couldn't possibly be as important or entertaining as joining you to run whatever mission you decide to do today. Okay I'm done since I know like all the other argumnents here it won't change a thing. Take the advice many have already given you and just HIDE so no one can ever send you a tell again asking to join your team again and live in your own little "private" space. Because THAT is the only one that really exists in this game.
To extend an invitation to join a group is not rude. To invite yourself to a team is rude.

One is offering something to someone, the other is assuming that something is being offered which might not be.

No, it is not. It is a place in the mix of electrons that make up a globally accessable MULTI player environment. It is more akin to being a group off in the corner on a playground than being a group in a private dwelling. In fact, if you wish for it to be a private "Smersh only" Treehouse, you can set yourself to be unsearchable, and thus unseen by others. But please do not assume that you are "in a private sector" when you are still openly playing on this playground, just because you and a few others are off in the corner playing kickball. If you are playing and still visible(eg Searchable), then no, you are not in a private area.

The more I read your responses Smersh, the more I think that not only is your initial complaint invalid, I think you are the one who is rude and selfish. You are the one expecting a "small, private sanctuary" in an open, multi person environment, but instead of you taking the steps to allow for your desired controlled environment, you expect others to be just as introverted as you seem to be when it comes to strangers. You seem to have this irrational concept that just because you make a group in an "open playground", that no one can ask in. That is ridiculous.

Believe it or not, it is not rude for a person in an environment that is supposed to promote multi player interaction for a person to ask if there is room for them to play too. How about you either; A)Hide from searches if YOU want to be private once in a group, or B)YOU not be rude and just say "sorry, full". I am not a doctor, but I am pretty sure neither of those will hurt.

And to take the last line of what I quoted... "Someone trying to join in from outside has no idea what is going on inside that private space.". But that is the thing... it is not a private space, it is just a group playing in one part of the playground(since you are all still searchable) that they can find, and they are just asking to play too.
Sometimes I want to play kickball. Sometimes I set up a game, sometimes I just look for a kickball game to join.

But I don't always want to play kickball. Sometimes I want to play chess, or bridge, neither of which admit extra players. It seems inconsiderate to think that, just because I'm on the playground, I must want to play kickball, and that if I am playing with others, I must be playing kickball.

Instead of asking if you can play kickball with me when I'm playing chess, it makes a lot more sense to yell out, "Anyone playing kickball? I play a great second base!"

And it's a heck of a public playground when you can't tell whether I'm playing bridge, chess or kickball.

It wasn't the issue at hand.

I do think sending blind invites is rude, but it wasn't the topic of discussion.
