Not that I'm saying your friends are being dishonest, but I often question that point of view when I hear it.

You have people who say they'd much rather cooperate with others than ever compete with them in a game. I'm going to assume those same people never play Scrabble, Monopoly, Chess or any other game where they might win and someone else might lose? I mean...they never competed in sports at school and basically live their lives with an unquenchable hunger to never do better than the other guy?

In my experience, most of the time it really comes down to: 'I don't want to lose, I can't guarantee that my skills will let me win so I won't play.' That's just my personal experience though.
  2. Its strange I know, but I've only recently pushed a few toons out of Praetoria.

I've been thinking about what to do with them now that they are in Paragon City.

For example, is it possible to take them through some of the Faultline content? I don't seem to be able to get any contacts going in Faultline. The contacts I start out with are Midnighters and Keith Nance. Neither of which I'm all that enthused about currently.

Maybe a Safeguard would give me more options...

That's true to a certain extent...but by no means universally so.

On this I can't comment much since I've never really raided in any game.

Another example mmo pvp. There really isn't much difference in pvp from one game to the next. If you don't like killing other player avatars it doesn't matter what mini-games or window dressing they put around it, you're not going to pvp.
That's dead wrong. That only applies if what you're looking for in PVP is something akin to griefing.

I can't really stand the PVP in COX. Not because I can't kill other player avatars here, but because it doesn't feel very superheroish to me. Something that is more important than 'balance' in that case. However, I love playing Team Fortress 2. I'm still killing player avatars, but its a lot more fun to me than the mechanics involved in COX PVP. I do very much enjoy PVE in COX though.

My attraction to PVP isn't centered on my liking to waste other players(that's part of the fun, of course, but not the only draw).

In fact, the reason I play any game is centered around how the game PLAYS. Its why I don't only play MMOs and why I can appreciate RTS, RPGs, FPS, 3rd person shooters and action games each on their own merit.

With regard to the OP's question, I don't think the developers should be as concerned with comfort zones as they are concerned with delivering the the type of content that their playerbase wants, and that is good for the game overall.

As I have posted earlier in the thread I have done all these things.

    Some of them twice over.

This should not still be an issue after this long.

And finally! I can get the XML file now without using a VPN. Thanks to whoever was responsible in NCSoft tech support.

Where CohUpdater would take approximately ten minutes to apply even a small patch, tying up my machine's resources to such a degree that I can do not a whole lot else, the NCsoft Launcher is done in about 90 seconds and doesn't seem to stress my system much beyond basic hard drive usage.

The ability to dump a shortcut straight to the game on my desktop, as well as the ability to force the Launcher to self-close when I run a game remove all my complaints of unwieldiness and additional resource drain. On top of that, it still gives us the ability to force-launch that may be flagged as having problems, as well as the ability to access the Test and Beta servers without having to type in shortcuts by hand.

So far, I have no complaints for the thing, and it does indeed seem like a step up from the basic CohUpdater.
I don't have a problem with the launcher, I have a problem with the fact that I apparently can't have free and easy access to a file that is needed to make the damn thing work on my system. Apparently because my IP is being rejected by whatever server the file is being stored on.

    Nice going NCSoft.
  6. Well in spite of getting the Games.xml file by my own means I went ahead and raised a support ticket as requested by Tex.

And as predicted, the support people were as clueless as can be about what the problem was. 'Please adjust your UAC in Windows 7.' I've had that crap turned off as soon as I installed Windows 7.

'Please reinstall the launcher from scratch.' Yeah, I've only done that a half dozen times before. Why don't I do that again and see if that helps me access a file that is being blocked from me when I use my default public IP to get it?

I'm curiously awaiting the next brainy suggestion. Thankfully I can access the game, or I'd be seriously pissed.

Well after 3 days of nothing happening I decided to solve it myself by using some VPN software to spoof my public IP.

And what do you know...I was able to download the file.

Questionable legality? Maybe...but I can get into the game now.
  9. Well apparently the Caribbean gets the shaft too. I'm in Barbados and never had a problem getting booster packs or updating any NCSoft game.

But enter the new NCSoft launcher and suddenly I'm feeling like a suspicious alien.

I have sent the PM to Avatea since yesterday. I even PMed her again to make sure that I didn't need to send anything else. She assured me she would pass it on to the relevant persons.

Do I need to send another PM to someone else? Is there anything else that would help? Because its not like I didn't follow the advice I was given here.
  11. Well that's it. This is beyond foolish.

If they want me to get the Games.xml file, and somehow its being prevented based on my IP and location, why not post it to a public download site like Megaupload?

I've uninstalled and reinstalled COX 3 times now and this stupid launcher more than half a dozen times.

If this wasn't ready for primetime, they should have just waited until it was.

I don't get why this is such a huge issue. I've had launchers from plenty of other games that did updates and never had a problem like this.

Meanwhile, even with just the launcher installed and COX completely uninstalled, the properties box on COX still says that the game does not support patching through the NCSoft launcher. Hooray!

Wait...is that internal or external IP and DNS settings?

My internet IP isn't static...so it can change with a router reset(it doesn't always but still...)

If you still can't access that by browser, let a buddy email it to ya. Hope it helps.
I absolutely cannot access it by browser and I have no other friends who play this game that I exchange emails with.

The funny thing is that I removed my old install folder and let the launcher do a new install. When I launch the game through it, it calls up the old updater and starts to download the game from scratch(SLOOOWWWWWLLLYY).

I copied the piggs folder back over into the new install directory...but that seems to have no effect whatsoever. Still acting like there are no piggs files there.
  14. Well this is just great. I installed the new launcher and when I try to run COH it shows a progress bar saying launching City of Heroes/Villains, gets to 100% then closes and starts the process all over again in a perpetual loop until I hit cancel.

In the properties of City of Heroes, it says 'This game does not support patching through the NCSoft Launcher'.

I'll be off playing Just Cause 2 if anyone wants me...because...that works!

Well explain to me what he's referring to then.

Red and blue haven't changed their low level content in...ever.

You always meet mobs of +1 to your mission in certain missions. For sure you do on redside. And the last time I rolled a blue side toon...which was before GR...I met +1 Vahz in missions in Galaxy City.

And if Praetoria wasn't the main offender in his argument...then I'm wondering what was. Praetoria is likely the place most new players start now that GR is out.

And if it isn't...my point still stands. I practically never take Vet powers unless thematically correct for my toons...which isn't often. And I run squishy low levels all the time with +1 as my default setting as soon as I can get to a Fortunata/Dispatcher/(whatever the guys on blueside are called...I forget).

VEATs are pretty decent at low levels and he duos with his wife. How much trouble could he possibly be getting, and from what?
  16. Not THIS again.

Praetoria isn't significantly harder than any other part of the game.

Being a Vet has nothing to do with it. I practically never take vet powers(mostly because they generally don't match my concepts).

Since GR went live, I have played through its content with nothing but squishy toons. A nin/nin stalker, a DP/Traps Corruptor and an elec/elec dominator. No Vet reward powers on any of them(with the exception of the shield drone pet on my corruptor because of the tech theme...and even then only once I hit level 16).

If you have trouble dealing with Praetoria content at standard difficulty levels(and I turn bosses on as soon as I can hit a Dispatcher btw), then it seems to me all your years as a COX vet have been wasted.

+1 spawns at level 6 are nothing to get excited over. If you have an ounce of common sense and approach the game with something other than a 'If I did it this way once, then it should work this way all the time for all enemies' mentality, that is.

I had someone in another thread tell me that Praetoria was impossible to do with an elec dominator. Turns out they thought skipping their single target immobilize was a good idea...it's really not. So they were trying to go through all the missions with a single hold as their only means of mitigation.

Praetoria is fine if you keep your head and understand the enemies you are facing...it doesn't take Vet powers or special temp powers to get through. Please stop spouting this nonsense.
  17. Yeah...I'm not sure what the point of this thread is.

It seems like a jab at farmers.

And while I have 0 interest in farming for any reason, I can't deny the fact that some people like to do so and the devs don't seem to have an issue with it.

Personally, any time I feel like I want to start farming for anything in this game, I know for fact that its time to logout and take a look at my embarrassingly long long list of Steam games and...Oh! Just Cause 2! Shiny!

In any case, I know a bunch of people who farm in this game and I know a bunch of people who don't. My farming friends know me enough to not ask me to join them on farms and my non-farming friends are the ones I tend to team with more regularly(when I DO team at all).

Ah yes...another person who thinks they can do the jobs of the developers better than the actual developers.

I never got the impression that Castle wasn't sensible. I never agreed with him across the board on every detail, but he was never shy about implementing buffs where they were needed. Especially considering that he buffed the entire blaster set as a whole in addition to the new Defiance changes. He also was responsible for the much needed buffs to Dominators. He was also behind the buffs to elec armor and energy aura.

The point you happily choose to miss is that balance works both ways. If a couple of sets are performing at insanely good levels...it doesn't automatically mean that every other set needs to move up.

What the devs seem to be doing(and I suspect this will continue even with Castle gone), is creating a solid baseline for performance that each set needs to reach and making new sets to match those criteria.

This is why the new sets don't automatically equate to a min/maxer's wet dream. Elec control, Dual pistols and Demon Summoning are all decent sets...but not overpowered sets. None of them are particularly gimped, but they also don't have some single, overwhelming aspect that people can cling to and tower over all other sets.

You're living in a dream world if you think the devs will ever create another Energy Melee equivalent(hence the ET nerf). New people or not, I think there are some established guidelines for powerset creation now that will govern any new set to be introduced to the game.
  19. I've read several pages of this thread and I just thought I'd put my $0.02 in.

The complaints against Dual Pistols seem to stem from the fact that people think it doesn't do anything particularly well. And so it's written off as a bad set.

In the case of Fire Blast comparisons, for instance, I saw people dismiss Executioner's Shot because Blaze is so much faster to animate.

One thing that people may need to keep in mind is that the developers will probably never design future sets in the same way that sets from the original Issue 1 game were created.

Castle had posted in the past that those single target attacks that people love to abuse so much(Blaze, Bitter Ice Blast etc.) really should not exist in their current form and that if the backlash wouldn't have been so great, then they would have been changed.

When the game first launched, powers weren't balanced around animation times etc. That started to come about during the FREEM 15 years when they really started to closely look at that kind of thing and make changes. Like the ever unpopular ET change.

What it comes down to is that this game will probably never see another Fire Blast set(in terms of capability) or another Spines set(which Castle had also said people would hate him if he went over it and adjusted it properly).

A lot of the old sets were simply created without any foresight or knowledge of how people would truly use them. As a consequence, people complain about new sets because they don't do the things that the old sets can...but they were never meant to.
  20. I just think that the Praetoria level range is too short for this sort of thing to happen. 1 - 20 whizzes by.

Especially when you add in Patrol XP. I'm wondering if this should be disabled for Praetoria by default.
  21. Well I'm glad I'm not the only one to hit this problem. Although it is kinda sad that the devs haven't addressed this. It's one thing to outlevel an arc when you're 7 levels past it, but I think the game should be intelligent enough to compensate when you're in the middle of an arc and go up by one level past its max.

At the very least, it should warn you when starting a new arc that you are close to its level cap. Ideally, the arc should simply shift it's level up to match yours as long as you're not a large number of levels past it.

Nothing ticks me off quite as much as leveling past content that I haven't seen yet while in the middle of that content. And in Praetoria, even more so since you can't flashback to it.
  22. Ok...some spoilers may follow so be warned that I'm talking about the Praetor Sinclair contact missions.

Now then...this may shock some, but I have yet to take a toon completely through Praetoria from start to finish. The reasons are varied and quite a few, but they include: General Altitis, other games taking more of my playtime, not wanting to team with my SG on my Praetorian toons so I don't miss content etc.

The most important toon I have in Praetoria right now is my DP/Traps corruptor Grim Hound. I have a concept of him as an arrogant Loyalist who changes sides late in his Praetorian career.

He's now level 16. And I just started the Praetor Sinclair arc dealing with the Phoenix Squad I believe it is called. I noticed that I started the arc at 15 and leveled to 16 in the first mission. After that...each mission was level 15. I actually turned off XP so I wouldn't be in danger of outleveling the storyline...but after the Gorgon battle, the arc seems to just stop. Sinclair tells me our business is finished but I still have clues in my clue list from the arc and a book icon next to Sinclair's name even though he's in the inactive contact tab.

Is that all there is to Sinclair as a contact? I don't think I got every member of the squad that went rogue and nothing seemed resolved at the end. Also...no souvenir for the arc in my list either. I was actually hoping that arc would turn out to a side switching one so I could take my guy to Resistance for the last 4 levels of Praetoria.
  23. I'd say Thugs/Poison.

Can't think of an MM I've enjoyed more. But I'm biased, it's true.

My 50 MM(Underseer) is a thugs/poison. I love that combo. You will eat EBs and AVs when you team with your insane debuffage.
