Quote:To bring a certain balance to what you just said, there have been numerous times with various games where the community has accurately predicted the effect of a new title/expansion release. Conclusion is that anyone saying it's trash and going to fail is full of (Random bodily waste here). Either a plant, a Doom sayer who would see everything as Bad no mater how good. Or had to much Dyne and turning into an Internet Troll.
One does not need to be a developer to have a certain feel for what makes for a good game. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that, sometimes, being a developer can severely warp your perception of what makes your game interesting or appealing to your target audience.
All that said, unless he was basing his statements off of being in the closed beta, it's hard to take that kind of thing very seriously. -

Half Life 2, Half life 2: Episodes 1 + 2, Team Fortress 2, Portal, Alien Swarm, Prototype, Dawn Of War, Dawn of War 2, Saint's Row, Defense Grid, Dragon Age: Origins, Mass Effect 1 and 2, Star Wars: Empire At War, The Witcher, Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition.
And those are just some of the games on my Steam list alone.
Sad, I know... -
Quote:I made the prediction that launching GR without significant updates to Redside content would create a vacuum on that side. There are too many people waiting to fill blue with redside ATs and not nearly enough who want to go the other way.I'm sorry but I've held that opinion since the first character I made. The only thing that kept me playing the villains I had was the SG/VG I was in. When they fell apart I returned to heroside until VEATS came out. I hoped they would bring new content and revive my interest in the faction. Boy was I disappointed.
The devs don't have to hate villains, they just need to take away one of the few advantages of playing them. The ATs. -
Quote:Well this certainly bodes well for the population on Redside if there are a majority of layers with your perspective.I'll be one of those few. Heroes I'll continue to make in Paragon. Villains however will be made in Praetoria, and if GR lives up to only half my hopes I'll be making more villains. I never really enjoyed the content redside.
Edit: Actually I'm going to be more interested in doing the side-switching first when GR goes live than starting new characters. I'm gonna be moving almost a dozen characters over to blueside. -
Quote:That's nothing to kid about. He should definitely clean the keyboard after visiting those sites. If somethings wrong then the Search tool is unreliable and can't be trusted. As to your keyboard, have you tried cleaning it after you visit the pron sites?

Assuming that we have come close to the mark with a population estimate of 60,000 - 70,000 subscribers(not saying that this is dead on accurate), is that a really healthy population for COX?
Assuming that all the people who subscribe even bought GR.
That's $30 X 65,000(approx.) = $1,950,000
Does that even come close to GR production costs? Just something I'm wondering. I haven't factored in people who never played COX who might buy the game because of GR. -

Doubt I can find the link now. It was on the old forums. But if memory serves, the comment was that we were not above either 150K or 100K...I can't be absolutely sure which it was. I'm thinking it was 100K, but maybe not.
-
Quote:I also remember BABs posting a year or 2 ago that we were definitely not over 100K subs.If you go back to the older NCsoft reports, when max concurrent and sub numbers were still present.
The max concurrent typically fell between 11 and 14% of the subs numbers.
Just after COV release someones (Either Cuppa or Statesman IIRC been a while) posted that they broke 200 000 subs, though it wasn't in the reported December values for that quarter. -
Well thanks to Bill for making the effort. He kinda went above and beyond for this, no matter how 'admissible' the data is.
I find it rather frustrating that they don't release population numbers to the public anymore. But there really isn't much we can do about that.
My major concern in this thread has been two things:
1) The new player perception of our game's population.
2) How that might be affecting people who might otherwise be interested in trying the game.
The overall worry I have is that if GR doesn't perform up to the expectations of the NCSoft management(not talking about our Dev team), will we ever get another expansion on the order of magnitude of GR again?
I don't want to see this game hit another holding pattern with 15 devs max working on it. If GR doesn't give the kind of return that NCSoft is expecting having put all those resources into its development, will we be looking at another 4 years with no major expansion and small updates which can't sustain interest in the long run?
So my worry isn't that the game will die anytime soon, but that it might run the risk of not continuing to grow at a decent rate. But maybe I'm needlessly worrying and GR has sold enough on pre-orders alone to pay for itself. -
Quote:Defenders are overpowered! My second go at him on my kin/ice defender was even easier than the first. Siphon Speed and the ice attacks had him lumbering around like a stone tank, Transfusion kept him from healing while Transferrence kept his endurance too low for him to fire off his drain, and Siphon Power and Fulcrum Shift meant the few attacks he managed to fire off didn't do much damage. I started the battle with a full inspiration tray, and finished it having used a breakfree and a small green.

Really? I thought everyone who frequents the forums had seen them.
IMO they are better than the Rooster Teeth stuff. Simply because they have a more easy-to-grasp humor and parody the Mac-PC ads on TV. I would have liked to see them continue developing those and possibly use them in banner ads and such on other websites.
The Rooster Teeth stuff was more squarely aimed at promoting MA...which frankly became a source of embarrassment shortly after release due to the rampant exploiting etc. -
Quote:Well that isn't quite the impression you gave. You made it seem like what I was suggesting they should do for marketing was so far out of the realm of normalcy that I should be locked in some kind of facility for the mentally disturbed. And as I said to Bill, no one is saying we wouldn't like to see marketing do more stuff.
I got the feeling like the Gamestop and Razer promotions were the be-all end-all of marketing effort in your eyes.
Maybe I misread that. If so then, then I apologize. But I'm not going to apologize for my opinion that they aren't doing nearly enough to market this game. Especially when it is clear that they aren't even doing as much as games that are both more and less successful then they are. It kind of bewilders me. -
-
Quote:Wait...you mean that's what he was talking about?? He thought I cared about the Razer Promotion?? BWAHAHAHAHA!!Are you stating that these folks are suffering from sour grapes syndrome because you think that they care about the Razer stuff?
If it helps, I don't care at all about the promotions. I pre-pruchased GR the day it became available fully accepting that other promotions may occur later on.
It appears to me that you seem incapable of coming up with any kind of real response to the lack of marketing so instead make up excuses to attack the posters in question. Quite pathetic, really.
I was wondering what the whole sour grapes thing was. That's frikkin' hilarious. -
Quote:I really should have thought about that myself. On the other hand...some mobs can read numbers and are using the vators these days.I haven't tried this move yet, but I did like a suggestion I saw about pulling him over until you're next to the elevator and using it to dodge his Monster Drainage (or an escape hatch).
I also thought that from what my double said, I could use the explosions and fire around the room to do him damage if I lured him into them...turns out not. -
Quote:I can't recall making a statement that implied it was the players' decision to direct marketing. Although I do find it funny that YOUR attitude isn't reflected by the devs creating a thread and asking for player ideas on marketing.did you even read the post that was quoted by both forbin and i from Black Pebble? this is what they are doing now. it is not our decision what the devs or NC does for advertising. i think you need to step down from your self made pillar for a minuet, or a while, and relax.
I'm not sure what you think I'm defending. I stated that I didn't think that the current marketing campaign is very effective. Last time I looked, I was entitled to that opinion.
If you think its fine and dandy, then I'm glad you're happy with it. I personally think it is weak and not making the best use of available marketing avenues.
I don't work in marketing however, so I can't say that I have a professional take on the issue. I can only relate to what I have seen work for other similar games and draw a comparison from there.
In terms of bringing new players to the game, I question its value. Most of what we seem to do in terms of promotion seems squarely aimed at people already playing the game. -
Quote:Maybe I missed a post by you in that thread, but where did you cover the advertising angle exactly? By referencing a search on gamestop?well, i covered both your concern of advertising and the concern of others over dead servers that were expressed.
And if that is the case and that is perfectly sufficient advertising, why don't other MMOs(including the MMO giants) feel like it is enough?
Everyone from WoW to EVE to LOTR Online, Runescape, Perfect World, 9 Dragons, Age of Conan and Everquest uses banner ads on popular gaming and web comic sites.
Our 'advertising campaign' so far has been a bit of a joke. We used to have regular banners and webcomics on pvponline, but since that stopped years ago, we have done nothing even remotely close.
I suppose our ideas of effective marketing diverge greatly, but I'm wondering exactly how much you think the Gamestop promo has done to bring in new players and expose more people to the game.
