Melissa Bianco: "We basically have taken City of Heroes to the next level. And I don't just mean like, the next level, we took it to the next level with Villains. We took it to the NEXT level with Going Rogue."

Wasn't that clear enough for you? They took it to the next next level!

Seriously tho, while that statement does beg the question, how many levels are there, I think, as GG pointed out, this was part one of a series of promotional videos. This one was primarily to set a context, and the following ones will probably go into more detail about GR. I think it's obvious from this one that they are hoping to draw in some new players with GR, since that seems to have been the target audience. I hope they are successful in that.

See the above post for another example.
Please don't misrepresent my post like that. I was NOT saying that the devs don't listen. Actually, I believe they DO, and that Ghost Falcon's statement was true. I was only pointing out that the addition of capes, in particular, was not a game change made due to player feedback - and so, it comes across as misleading to use that as an example. There are SOOOOO many examples of changes made to the game that were a direct result of player feedback, they should stick to those.

I think "capes" makes a nice bullet point/sound bite, and that's why they used it as an example.
  3. Sorry to be nit-picky, but...

Melissa Bianco: "It's kind of like a back-and-forth between the players and the development studio. Players are like, 'I want capes,' we gave them capes."

As I recall, capes weren't an afterthought that were added because players demanded them... rather, they were always planned, but were cut from the development schedule for launch because the tech for good-looking capes was taking a long time. Rather than just slap some static or badly-animated capes into the game to make the launch schedule, the decision was made to launch without them, and add them into an expansion issue.

Not a big deal, I know - but seems a little misleading to include that as an example of how the development team listens to the playerbase. I DO believe that the dev team here communicates with and listens to the players more than most other MMO developers, but there are plenty of better examples to illustrate that point.

Kinda figured there'd be a new surge of posts here, since i17 added... what? 75 badges? I figure the 700 club thread will see some more activity, too. And it's only going to get crazier once GR hits! 6-and-700 badges are going to be on the low end, all of a sudden!
  5. Silver Streak hit 700 badges, thanks to i17!

I still gots some catchin up to do!! But I'm getting there

Heh - I played MA/SR in the beta. At launch, I decided to go with DM/SR for my main, instead (although, to be fair, that was mainly because I wanted a punching set, instead of kicks. But, perhaps that's just a rationalization, because, yea, it sucked ).
  7. Personally, I think the marketing for i17 should have included THIS!
  8. As of this morning's patch, they're working again... but then, you probably already knew that. Oh, and also, market's back up!

Great video, as always, Sam... I too have a question, and mine is, I'm sure, a rather silly one: at the 4:30 mark, you show a few letters - did you copy/paste souvenir text onto parchment textures to create those, or are those actually in-game somewhere, and I've managed to miss them for 6 years?

Pretty sure I know what the answer is, but I just want to be certain.

Well, to be fair, I didn't get 600 badges in a few months. I was at 477 when I finally thought to myself, "time to get serious about badges!" So, I've picked up about 130 new badges in the last few months. Decent accomplishment, I figure - but I won't rest til I've finished ALL the badges I can!

Anyway, grats also to Lineuphere1 and Nericus!

Finally broke 600 badges with my main!

I know, not too terribly impressive hero-side, but considering I didn't really care about badges until about 3 months ago, I'm happy to have finally broken it!
  12. This site hasn't been updated for a couple years now, but I still havn't seen everything on it! Cracks me up - his comic parodies in particular:
    http://jaypinkerton.com/

Seanbaby, on the other hand, is STILL going strong, after I don't know how many years. More very funny super-hero parody stuff, in particular his Super-Friends pages:
    http://seanbaby.com/

Probably the most fun comic parody site:
    http://superdickery.com/

Yea, I kinda like the goons - kinda wish they played CoH, I'm sure they'd do something fun!
    http://www.somethingawful.com/

I'm not a fan of That Guy With the Glasses - find him kind of irritating, actually - but Nostalgia Chick's reviews I like, and not just cuz she's cute and funny. She's also very insightful:

  13. Well, my answer is conditional....

Would triple-monitor support be essentially the same thing as widescreen Field of View support (ie. removing the current vert- solution for widescreen, and replacing with proper hor+)? I mean, I know these issues are related, but I'm not sure, from a tech standpoint, if they're identical.

So, IF implementing triple-monitor support is the same thing, development-wise, as implementing widescreen FoV support for 16:9, 15:9, and 16:10 monitors, then, by all means, yes!! I'm fully in support of this happening for Going Rogue.

To answer your question more specifically:
No, I do not run a multiple-monitor system, nor do I have any plans to. However, I do, like many people, play on a widescreen monitor - and I HATE the -vert. Beyond my personal feelings about it, though, I just think it's important for CoH to stay relevant in the marketplace. It feels like we're watching a pan-and-scanned VHS movie, when newer games are the equivalent of Blu-Ray widescreen/letterbox.
  14. Just a heads-up regarding this issue - I just received confirmation from Avatea - the fact that Mercedes Sheldon's story arcs on Ouroboros are not granting Flashback badges IS a known issue, though it is not currently listed on the Known Issues page. She said that the Known Issues list should be getting updated soon, with this addition.
  15. Can anyone confirm - did the 69 month Vet badges drop? I havn't thought about this for awhile, but it just occurred to me, I got the 66 month last October, and no 69 month yet. I've been here since launch-time, with no interruptions. Any other old-time vets get their 69 month badge, in January, I guess?
  16. Ran this on Virtue a couple days ago.

Just a heads-up for anyone else planning on giving it a go - you probably want to plan for longer than an hour, if all 8 people in your group need it. Kheldarn's suggestion of making sure you have an hour free is fine, IF all goes according to plan. If you don't run into the best-case scenario, it'll end up going over an hour.

It took us about 1 hour and 45 minutes (including getting everyone together, explaining how to do it, etc) - but we had a few glitches. Someone crashed (when they clicked the exit button during a match) during 3 of the runs, but we'd go ahead and finish out the tournament to see if the badge would award anyway - in each of those cases, no, it did not. So, we had to those ones over. My suggestion - if someone crashes during a match, go ahead and save yourself some time, and restart the tournament immediately, rather than waiting to find out the badge didn't drop.

Also, we had to find replacements for two of the participants halfway thru. I knew more people that wanted in, anyway, so no biggie - but, just be prepared for the amount of time it may take for all 8 participants to get the badge, and ask up front if people are available for an hour and half or so, to be safe.

Oh, and keep blipping those delicious disco tunes!
  19. Another issue with this story arc:

I just did it via Ouroboros, while working on badges - was going for Inhibited and Daredevil badges on this go-around (lvl25-29 Flashback arc with no Temp Powers, and while debuffed, respectively). Completed the story arc just fine - but no badges rewarded at end. Anyone else experienced this? Does it actually award badges for this story arc as though it were 20-24, even though it's in Ouroboros as 25-29 (I believe without Flashback, the story arc is given out from levels 20-25)?

  21. I would love to get in on this if it were going to be run on Virtue server. Sounds like that's a longshot, tho. Or, I'd probably do the server transfer to get it, as well. Too bad I didn't find out about it in time for the Freedom run.

Indeed. Even in MMO's, which have been slower to adopt widescreen resolution support, presumably for fear of PvP advantage, the trend is there. Just to name a few MMO's that have it (quoting Zierce from another thread here, since I havn't tested all these personally) - WoW, EQ, EQ2, Champions, STO, Eve, and Aion.

If CoH doesn't adapt for this technology, then it's falling further and further behind in satisfying what the modern gamer wants, and we will find it increasingly difficult to attract new players.

So it seems CoH is just an exception when it comes to MMOs.
Just outta curiosity, how about DaoC, WAR, AoC, Lotro? I know you've played some of those, not sure about all. But, anyway, yea, the more examples you can show of other MMO's that DO have proper FoV widescreen support, the better.

I'm going to jump in, even though I'm one of those old-schoolers (or dinosaurs, depending on your perspective) still using a 4:3 monitor. However, when I was house-sitting for a friend, and brought over my computer, plugging it into his widescreen monitor - I became aware of just how big an issue this is (yes, the -vert is not AS big a deal for 16:10 as it is for multi-monitor, but it's still significant)!

Here's my .02 worth. If you want to attract dev attention to this issue, approaching it purely as a multi-monitor issue is probably not the way to go. The devs may assume (and rightly so) that players using multi-monitor setups are a very small minority, and therefore relegate this concern to the "very low priority" bin.

On the other hand, if it were presented to The Television as an issue that impacts a LARGE AND GROWING number of their current playerbase, and, most likely, an even greater percentage of potential future players, they might be forced to consider this a high priority item!

What I'm getting at is that more and more gamers are using widescreen monitors, and so more and more of them are becoming educated about FoV and widescreen support in games. It's like when widescreen format was still new in videotapes - before widescreen TV's were available. Most people didn't understand letterboxing back then, but over time knowledge spread, and eventually people caught on that pan-and-scanned movies sacrificed a lot of the original image. Widescreen TV's became more and more pervasive, until, nowadays, all DVD movies get released in widescreen format.

The PC gaming industry is going in the same direction, due to widescreen monitors becoming the standard, and not the exception. Eventually, if not already (I havn't researched the numbers), almost ALL gamers will be on widescreen monitors.

Since one of the goals of Going Rogue is, I think, to attract new players, it would be a big mistake NOT to think about what gamers are looking for in a game these days! The graphics of CoH might have been fine in 2004, when it launched, but it's looking more and more dated. And with Ultra-mode supposedly bringing the graphics up to more modern standards, overlooking such a basic thing as proper FoV and widescreen support would be a real shame, as it might very well lead to poor retention of any new box sales.
