I'm just curious, what's wrong with a hero named Jinx? (Other than the fact that DC and Marvel both already each have a character with that name?)
-
I don't remember which shard I was on. Probably the default. However, I ultimately found very little about Guild Wars that I enjoyed. I found it to be less effort to simply not play it, thus avoiding the idiots and the awful gameplay in a single stroke.
-
And again, I would have to recommend against the game. DAoC is from the same developers as Warhammer Online. And it is widely regarded as having been abandoned by the developers so they could focus on WAR. It's also TOTALLY based on PVP, which I seem to remember was something that the original poster was trying to avoid. If you didn't like WAR, I can almost guarantee you won't like DAoC any better. Yes, there are PVE missions. But just like in WAR, the endgame is almost completely devoted to the Realm vs Realm combat. The only advantage it offers over its successor is that there are three factions instead of two - whichever is the strongest tends to become the automatic target of the other two, which apparently tends to smooth out faction imbalances a little.

Quote:I don't play on Freedom, never have. I played around with the chat window options in Guild Wars, and I never found any way to disable a single channel - if there is such a thing, it's certainly not in an intuitive place. I don't see why I should have to flee the area because other people are morons.
You can switch districts, or take broadcast out of your chat window. (It's not like Atlas Park on Freedom is much better...)
And I don't care for any game where I have to look up the "perfect" build and stat distribution to finish each mission. I want to build *my* character. And if my character is useless in half the missions, I see no real reason to play that game. As I said, it's just my opinion. But I strongly disliked that game. -
Personally, I'd recommend against Guild Wars. Unless you *love* teaming, many of the later missions range from difficult to simply impossible with the AI henchmen. And the cities are infested with people standing around trash talking and generally being idiots in the broadcast chat. And often standing clustered around the merchants, to the point that it's difficult to even click on them.
I personally also greatly dislike the spell/skill system, but that's a personal bias.
I still have an active WoW account, but I can't really recommend it. It is, as others have pointed out, biased heavily against solo and casual players. It's actually quite easy to solo for "street sweeping" and general quests. However, the dungeons are literally impossible solo at any level where you can get XP for them. And the End Game content is *entirely* focused on Raids and PVP. The way the Raids are set up, they're pointless to even attempt if you have any desire to customize your character - if you aren't X build with at least Y gear, you simply won't be allowed to join. (Think of the Master of Statesman's Task Force snobs, except worse.)
Many features of that game are also deliberate time-sinks. Aside from travel, there's the fact that many of the later areas require you to grind Reputation with various factions to progress and gain access to new quest-givers. Getting to the highest level of faction with some groups will take a minimum of several weeks, if you log in and do their daily faction quests every single day.
Most of the Free2Play MMOs are simply not really free. You can download and log in without a subscription, but there will be features missing. Some simply give subscribers a bonus to XP, and some actually make it impossible to progress without spending real money for level-up training. And again, they tend to be infested with idiots - even if the resident GMs actually enforce any kind of rules, the jerks can simply make a new free acount and pop right back in. -
Well, if you want a thematic challenge, you could try Ninja/Trick Arrow.
-
That's the pictures I saw. I'd say that at a minimum, they would be the only ones of the Mastermind pets to use the Beast skeleton animations. Assuming they don't get something completely new. In any case, the succubus is definitely not on the guest list for this particular set. (I'm not sure what the utility power for the set would be, but I'm pretty sure it won't be to summon a succubus, even as a temp pet. Not if Demon MMs are tapping into a realm where those things are normal.)
-
Quote:There were some shots of concept art for the demons at HeroCon. They look like nothing else in game. The best general description I can come up with is that they look animalistic, sort of like a cross between a flesh golem, a crocodile, and a gorilla. Oh, and they have skulls for heads. If the artwork of Desdemona and her demons is to scale though, the Assault Bot might finally have competition for "largest pet." The tier 3 demon looks absolutely massive.yeah, i figure red will mix stronger. Brutes > Tankers. Corrs > Defenders. EATs bad, VEATs good. It seems that unless you're willing to shell out the influence to get permadom, a controller is better than domi though. And Stalkers and MMs will be left out in the cold with 2 sides not really wanting them for anything much. Sad, I have fun with my stalker and learned how 90% of MMs suck just because they never learn how to use fine pet controls with my ninja/stormer that's pretty much on the retired shelf.
Wonder what the Demon MMs will be like. Summon CoT nerva spectral demons/behemoths/maybe a Succubus to be a third melee pets set? Mmm, ridiculous doorblockage from behemoths... -
Quote:Imagine losing your kicking base because the easiest way to handle the server merge is to wipe all supergroup data from both servers. (All SGs gone, all names cleared, all names available on first-come, first-serve. Totally unbiased.) Imagine losing half your characters, because they merged two small servers you happen to be active on and there aren't enough slots. Imagine that the other half all end up as "Matt Tatts2" because someone on the other server happened to have the same name.Ok i definately wasn't looking to creat drama between people and servers, who brought virtue into this convo anyways? this is the all things GUARDIAN! its a discussion and nothing more. On that note i hear the name issues but losing the guardian feel??? everyone you know will be there with you and having to small servers blend will not come close to the chaos that is freedom. open your minds a little we wont be over run we'll simply have more people to play with on all levels... imagine not having to wait 45 minute just to build the team for you tf... imagine having more people for you sg to help with prestige giving you that kick A## base... it really wouldnt be as damaging as some of you think!
As everyone has pointed out, this gets brought up often. Aside from all of the reasons this would have a massive negative effect on players, merging servers is a bad move for the company as well - many people would quit over the issues it would cause. And it would be seen by those outside the game as clear evidence that the game itself is in trouble. (Merging servers is generally only done as a cost-cutting measure, when the number of players isn't large enough to maintain profitability. Yes, AOC and WAR both have had server merges. AOC at least, is widely considered to be dying, and WAR is generally regarded as "in a bit of trouble." I have visited no less the three software stores recently, where I have actually overheard the cashiers advising people *against* buying either game, "because they're going to get shut down soon.")
Merging the servers would not help with PVP. Very few people PVP in this game to begin with, and the system available is less than ideal. The people who hate/don't care about PVP will still feel that way after a merge, except they'll also be upset that one or more of their characters or SGs were effectively wrecked by the merge. It would not help greatly with finding teams because, simply put, the problem you're having isn't that there aren't people to team with. It's that you are looking for them wrong. (Here's a hint - sitting around and waiting for "da awesum team!" to invite you isn't going to work.)
If the number of people on your server bothers you, find a bigger server. You can even move your characters, for a small fee. There is no reason that many other players on *both* servers should be badly inconvenienced simply because you cannot find a group. What's that? You don't want to move to another server? Guess what? Neither do most of the players on any two servers you might try to merge. -
Ok, I think I've mostly got my spider mutant issues sorted out. Probably. (Also, the attempt seems to have generated a number of mutant wasps and bees, be careful out there if you're allergic.) Now, I'm trying to figure out how to make a mummy - I keep seeing the Egyptian head piece, and I've been considering making another character with Dark powers. I know that the character creator has the head piece, and probably something in skirts/kilts that would work. However, I can't seem to find a texture that looks even slightly like bandages. Maybe I'm just not looking at them right. Can anyone offer a suggestion? I'd prefer something that's available to all three body types, since at the moment other than "mummy" and probably "Dark powers," I haven't nailed down much about the character at all. I would prefer a bandaged mummy, if possible, since naked mummies are hard to distinguish from zombies.

Errr... didn't the devs already rip the guts out of AE, by changing the rules for how XP is allocated? The changes are a bit complicated to explain quickly, but boil down to the fact that a mission with only bosses will grant ZERO XP. To get full XP, a custom critter group has to include at least one each of minion/lieutenant/boss, all set at Hard or Extreme and with *all* required powers. Dropping even one power causes the critter to be worth ZERO XP. Most of the "AE Babies" either wandered out into the larger game or quit weeks ago.

Eh, we're used to it. Masterminds annoy everybody, sooner or later. Heck, Masterminds annoy themselves. "Blast it, Bot-2, get back here *NOW!* I said... you just shot that Titan, didn't you? #$^@! Bot-02, I'll get you for this!" Also, we block doors.
-
The problem is that they can calculate a set, maximum value per endurance for the MM pet upgrades - there are, at most, six of them. If the shields were made into AoEs, they become *vastly* more efficient on large, high level teams. If you had a team with two Brutes, two Dominators plus pets, two Corruptors, and two Masterminds plus pets, then any AoE buffs could be affecting up to 22 targets. (And that's assuming that none of the Corruptors or MMs are playing a set like Dark Miasma with a short term pet that can take buffs.) I can't see the devs being very happy with that.

Quote:While we're at it, where are the "I WIN!" "Make me Level 50!" and "Full set of all Purple IOs for all powers!" buttons? We really need those, too.Can I get auto-firing Fireballs so I can stop pressing that annoying button every spawn. You think shielding people every 4 minutes is a pain, people expect me to be attacking and using Fire Sword Circle every 10-12 SECONDS! Buff bots have it easy.
I'd also like the game to auto-target the most dangerous non-boss/EB/AV mob and then mez it for me for an hour after I activate Char when I log in. -
Here's a thought - if you're on a full team, with another Mastermind (or Dominators, or Controllers in Co-Op areas,) just focus on the players. Buff your pets as well if there's time and they seem to need it - I find that in large groups the other players are usually active enough aggro-magnets that MM pets rarely get hit anyway. *Don't* bother buffing everyone else's pets, at least once you're past level 10 or so. Those players either have buffs of their own, or have already learned a playstyle that doesn't need them as much. And if there are seven other players, the amount of damage per second you lose when a Zombie or two goes down is minimal.
Yes, it would be nice if the duration on shields was increased to 10 minutes. However, some sets would have to be drastically altered to accommodate longer durations - higher endruance costs, lower values for whatever they buff, or both if they stack with themselves. (The Kinetics set would probably be pretty badly mauled by a change like this.) Increasing the duration to an hour is simply ludicrous, and would actually be counterproductive for ATs that have those abilities. Why? Observe: You get invited to a team. You buff everyone present. They kick you and get an AT that does far better damage, because unless they die, you have just become obsolete for the next 59 minutes. -
Quote:I thought giving pets an Attack command canceled Bodyguard mode? (Ie., anything but Defensive Follow.) Is that incorrect? I *don't* use the default pet command buttons, I've got Macros for each command - petcom_all Attack, petcom_all defensive follow, petcom_all goto, and petcom_all dismiss are what I normally use. For some of my Masterminds, like the Necromancers, I'll switch the Goto or Attack to just specific pets - Grave Knights are entirely too fond of their Dark bolts, and Zombies are more useful to soak damage in Bodyguard than as a Longbow induced stain on the floor, and the Lich does... well, whatever it is that he does, regardless of what I say.I just got my Thugs/Dark up to 47 yesterday, solo most of the way. I don't think I would have gotten this far if it weren't for the Mastermind binds already set up in CityBinder. One button for bodyguard mode, another to tell the dummies to attack while still in bodyguard mode -- that way I can usually get the thugs to focus on the toughest target. Still, the Arsonist runs off to commit suicide on a regular basis -- I can live with that even if he doesn't.

I don't really team much blueside, but I don't think I've teamed with many Tankers at all. There have probably been some, but my Blueside main is a... I believe the term is Blastroller. Plants/Thermal, and definitely biased towards doing damage rather than support. I can only remember one team with a pushy "you must follow me and I must keep all aggro" tanker, and it was an epic disaster. I've been on teams were I was actually the one leading the way in though - pick a critter on the far side of the group, run up and blast them with Seeds, then Roots, then pick out any troublemakers that are still moving and start crushing them with Strangler and Entangle. (And the Fire epic powers if the mission permits it.) My Thermal shields are *not* heavily slotted, and it rarely seems to matter. I don't do the epic damage of a Blaster, but I can mostly do it to targets that can't fight back. The mark of good team players in this game seems to be adaptability, rather than the rigid roles in games like WoW. It can be *useful* to have a Tanker, but they aren't really essential.
I do agree though that most of the Redside ATs seem to be designed for damage plus their gimmick, rather than the other way around though. Especially now that Dominators don't have the manic/depressive cycle for Domination tied to their damage output. Stalkers still fee a bit odd though, and I can't imagine what playing one must have been like before they had at least a small chance to get critical hits on any attack. -
I do wish we had back options besides capes and wings, it would really help "sell" the concept if we had a "claws" back piece, especially if it animated while you were idle the way the small demon wings do. Of course, I'm sure its already on the list of things to do, right after "better animal pieces." In the meantime, I think a few of the capes look sort of web-like, I suppose those will have to do. Assuming I use a back piece at all.
-
Thank you. I'l play around with some of those and see what I like. I'd also considered a Plant/Thorn Dominator, although the problem there is that I've already got one of those. Although I have noticed that just having a different outfit/background/name can make a difference in how a character seems to "feel" when I play them. (And yeah, for what I originally had in mind, I think a Crab Spider without any of the rifle powers would work pretty well. The basic idea was a spider hybrid, although not quite as freakishly mutated as the Arachnoids. I might get back to that once I have a level 50 villain.)
I might also try a Thugs/Traps Mastermind. The downside there is that the concept would all be in the costume and web grenades, as Thugs don't have anything to do with spiders, and Masterminds don't get a Patron pet. Or maybe Poison, though I'm not terribly fond of that set. How well does Necromancy work with Poison? Argh, too many choices that "almost" work. -
I have an idea for a concept character - basically, I'd like a character that is part spider. I don't mean a Spiderman rip-off though. The trouble is, I'm having a hard time thinking of any ATs or powersets that would mesh well with what spiders basically do. (Hunting, webs, and jumping.) Some sets have a few things, like web grenades, that would fit pretty well, and a bunch of stuff that doesn't seem to fit at all. Others are a stretch - claws and spines might work. I don't really have the option to make any of the Soldiers of Arachnos (not for a while, anyway.)
My main considerations are that I prefer to solo or at least be able to do so. Thus, I tend to avoid ATs and sets that need other players to work properly. (Defenders, Tankers, Forcefields on anything but a Mastermind.) And I'd like the powers to look at least vaguely like something a spider might do, so things like the FoTM Fire/Kin are out.
I'm starting to think that this might be a case of my ambition exceeding the limits of what the game will let me do. -
I don't know about the winter Croatoa maps, but I'm pretty sure the Winter Horde *are* in there. I have a friend who has been doing a series about a mutant penguin vs the evil snowmen for ages now, so I know I've seen them. I'm not sure what group they're in though.

Quote:On the other hand, it could be a win-win situation for Arachnos (from a role playing standpoint.) Every time you summon your Arachnos minion, you're revealing your exact position and precisely what you're up to and who you're with. And that's not even counting people who want to play as a spy for one side or the other. And the people who want to pretend that they have the assistance of an Arachnos minion who has also gone rogue.Actually, that's a big point right there. If you switch sides, how do you keep your Arachnos minion with you? By force? Mastermind henchmen I can see, you've gained their loyalty in some way (or completely control their minds) but the Patron Pets are working for Arachnos. They're probably even assigned to you by your Patron. They're probably not going to like you going over to Paragon City and being best buddies with Statesman.
From a gameplay perspective, I can't seem them automatically stripping away a power that a player has already chosen. If they force it to switch to something else when you change sides, what happens to the IOs that are slotted? What I *can* see them doing is dropping a huge pile of Villain points on the Patron arcs - if you want to be a hero after you get the Patron powers, you're welcome to try, but you'd be starting from zero or less on the "good guy" scale. -
Quote:For some people, the trash talking is the main reason. For me, it's only part of the reason, though it is one of the ones that will occur to me immediately when anyone asks if I want to PVP. In any case, good luck with your guide. Just because I don't like PVP doesn't mean no one else is allowed to enjoy it.Fair, will do. Until after this thread, I didn't realize that the main reason people stay away from pvp is the trash-talking environment, though it is a minority.
*Edit* As far as trash-talking idiots in Atlas... Yes, I see them all the time. If I find them particularly offensive, I'll report them, then ignore them. Otherwise, if they don't shut up, I'll /ignore them. I am quite generous with bestowing the honor of /ignore. But in Atlas, I don't have to worry about one of those people sneaking up behind me and stabbing me in the head. In PVE, I don't have to interact with them in any way. And in at least two cases, I've actually left teams because of people like that. Even though it meant bailing out on friends that were still on the team. I *will not* interact with people like that. (In one case, when one of the jerks apparently realized that I must have /ignored him, he came up behind my character and did a custom "humping" emote. I didn't even take time to apologize to my friend before I hit "Quit Team.") -
Ares - you may disagree with some of the people who dislike PVP. Or all of them, for that matter. But if you want your guide to be complete, it should address some of the issues that have been pointed out - PVP jerks, the fact that some powersets or power pools *will* have to struggle, PVP jerks, the difference between fighting NPCs and players in a PVP zone, PVP jerks, and trash talking. If you want to make a complete guide, that is.
