What powers/AT would work for this?
MA/WP with Leaping, Webnade from Weapon Mastery and a Spider-themed costume.
Spines/(Elec-Ninjutsu-SR depending on AT or preference) with leaping and weapon mastery or mace (IIRC, and again depending on AT) would work fairly well.
i like Spines/Nin or SR Stalkers with leaping for emulating hunting spiders, but that's just me. The insectoid costume pieces and monstrous legs would make for a fine spiderlike appearance, depending on how much you actually want to look like one.
(Suggesting Spines largely because Impale has an immobilize component that could be explained as being almost like webbing an opponent in place.)

i make stuff...
I have an idea for a concept character - basically, I'd like a character that is part spider. I don't mean a Spiderman rip-off though. The trouble is, I'm having a hard time thinking of any ATs or powersets that would mesh well with what spiders basically do. (Hunting, webs, and jumping.) Some sets have a few things, like web grenades, that would fit pretty well, and a bunch of stuff that doesn't seem to fit at all. Others are a stretch - claws and spines might work. I don't really have the option to make any of the Soldiers of Arachnos (not for a while, anyway.)
My main considerations are that I prefer to solo or at least be able to do so. Thus, I tend to avoid ATs and sets that need other players to work properly. (Defenders, Tankers, Forcefields on anything but a Mastermind.) |
And I'd like the powers to look at least vaguely like something a spider might do, so things like the FoTM Fire/Kin are out. I'm starting to think that this might be a case of my ambition exceeding the limits of what the game will let me do. |
Alternately, Dark/Traps/Mace. Same reasons for Dark and the -Res/-Def powers in Traps, and the Mace powers, plus Web Grenade, and you can role play FFG as a silk barrier, Caltrops as little tiny spiders biting at enemies, Trip Mine as an exploding egg sack and Seeker Drones as more little spiders.
And getting that to 50 will unlock Soldiers of Arachnos, which will give you a Crab Spider to play with.
"Sorceress spiderqueen with a bow" concept?
Sounds like a drow to me.
I recently rolled a dark/ta corruptor. I couldnt have made a better decision for a new debuffer. This toon is only lvl 18. So its still weak, I know, but glue+acid+tt+nf at this lvl is a blast. Add scourge with all the dot's from dark blast and it gets crazy.
I know its only gonna get better too.
SO's, poison, siphonlife (or whatever the ranged self heal is called), and OSA are right around the corner.
This toon will be a solid performer. Capable of solo'n quite easily. Maybe not at the lvl/speed of some of my scrappers, but decent none-the-less.
My favorite combo is Faceplant/DebtCap with the TeamWipe Ancillary

Dark Melee/*Pick a your chosen Melee Defense Set*/Dark Mastery (or Soul Mastery if Redside)
Grab Superjump as travel power.
Noow get all those tenticlely powers and that's your shadow web powers.
That's how I work it for RaveSpider, my DM/WP Stalker anyways.

Spines.
New-World tarantulas (meaning they live on the N/S America side of the Atlantic) have urticating hairs that they kick off their abdomens as a defense mechanism. The hairs are extremely irritating and can cause severe rashs or even blind you if they get in your eyes. If you see a tarantula that looks like it's scraching like a dog with one of it's rear legs, back away, because you don't want a faceful of what it just did.
I have a Spines/Fire that is the result of genetic modification. He has tarantula DNA combined with poison arrow frog DNA and blended with unknown DNA that causes his skin to secrete a flammable fluid when under stress.

Thank you. I'l play around with some of those and see what I like. I'd also considered a Plant/Thorn Dominator, although the problem there is that I've already got one of those. Although I have noticed that just having a different outfit/background/name can make a difference in how a character seems to "feel" when I play them. (And yeah, for what I originally had in mind, I think a Crab Spider without any of the rifle powers would work pretty well. The basic idea was a spider hybrid, although not quite as freakishly mutated as the Arachnoids. I might get back to that once I have a level 50 villain.)
I might also try a Thugs/Traps Mastermind. The downside there is that the concept would all be in the costume and web grenades, as Thugs don't have anything to do with spiders, and Masterminds don't get a Patron pet. Or maybe Poison, though I'm not terribly fond of that set. How well does Necromancy work with Poison? Argh, too many choices that "almost" work.
I do wish we had back options besides capes and wings, it would really help "sell" the concept if we had a "claws" back piece, especially if it animated while you were idle the way the small demon wings do. Of course, I'm sure its already on the list of things to do, right after "better animal pieces." In the meantime, I think a few of the capes look sort of web-like, I suppose those will have to do. Assuming I use a back piece at all.
