    Do tell please
A brief description of what happened, in character, by Shadowe:

So, there I was, minding my own business, on my way to see my sister in her flat in Founder's Falls, when a Vanguard broadcast shattered the quiet. The emergency indicated that a massive Rikti invasion force was attempting to establish a beachhead into the War Zone... from inside the Vanguard base! Needless to say, I swiftly activated the micro-teleport unit that summons my battle-armour, and, far faster than I ever would usually, descended on the Vanguard location.

What I found there was... sobering.

At first, all I saw was a handful of Rikti, picking away at a couple of my fellow heroes. With a casual discharge of power, I knocked them into the nearby water, and they were swiftly dealt with.

That was when Helena, my faithful computer, warned me of incoming troops. Not teleporting in. Oh, no, that would be too obvious, and summon too many heroes to effectively counter - this was a massive wave of Gunmen, Soldiers, Mentalists, Priests and those confounding drones, charging down the street on our position.

You often hear people talk about "fighting for their lives", and it's often so much hyperbole. This time... this time it was real. I have no fear for myself, of course, but other heroes nearby weren't as lucky as I am, and our numbers started to dwindle as more and more of us succumbed to the enemy's numbers.

Luckily, people were calling in allies, and it wasn't long before there were, oh, fifty? Sixty? maybe more of us battling the oncoming hordes.

And hordes they were. Mistake me not, there were hundreds, if not thousands, of them attacking us. And these weren't weaklings, either. It would be fair to say that they sent their best against us.

I can't remember who first saw it, but I know that I was one of the first to reach it - the massive hulking brute of a Rikti, clad in the distinctive armour of U'kon Gr'ai. We tore at it for what seemed an eternity, picking off the surrounding masses as we struggled to keep ourselves from falling to the monstrosity.

    Little did we know.

With the Master at Arms defeated, we were able to refocus on the massive crowds still swarming toward the Vanguard base. The force mix was devastating - Heavies backed up by Priests, Mentalists and swarms of Defenders, with Drones to fill in and take out any stealthed heroes - like me.

I have no idea how long we fought. All I do know is that after finishing off a handful of those pesky monkeys, I took a little scouting run - at superspeed - up toward the hospital, just to ensure that the way was clear for any heroes returning from there.

That was when I found out that "Master at Arms" isn't a unique title, nor a unique suit of armour. Two of them, standing before my eyes, either one capable of tearing me to shreds, and only the shield of my invisibility protecting me.

Frantically, I broadcast a warning to my fellows, dropping my stealth and unleashing an attack on them, knowing full well that all it would do is distract them for an instant before they squashed the annoying hero bug.

More heroes came away from their last skirmish, and soon the street was filled with the roar of energy, power unimaginable being unleashed on both sides of the battle.

Again and again we threw ourselves at them, and again and again we wore them slowly down. Slowly, until within seconds, both Masters at Arms dropped to the floor and were teleported away by their own medical technology.

We were elated! A fantastic victory!

And yet still the Rikti came, seemingly unperturbed by our success in forcing
two Masters at Arms to retreat.

It wasn't long before we found out why.

The battle was moving northward, away from Vanguard's door, and that gave me great hope that we were driving them farther and farther back, that with every defeat we were showing that that Paragon - nay
Earth - will not go down quietly. We will fight to the last, for our right to live as we have chosen to live. And even if no other stands in their path, and even though it would kill me, I will stand alone, should I have to.

I was not alone, that day. My brother and sister heroes were beside me and, as I have already said, we were driving the invaders away from the Vanguard location. In hindsight, it was an obvious trick.

They simply strolled across the bridge behind us, as far as I can tell.

This, though, was clearly the main thrust of the battle. The reason they continued fighting when all logic insisted that they should fall back from our defence.

Another pair of Masters at Arms, with their personal entourage of Heavies, Priests, Mentalists, Soldiers, Drones, Monkeys, Defenders, Communications Officers... with another pair right behind them.

My mouth was dry as I saw them, and a corner of my mind insisted that I should flee, run away before they could hurt me... but as long as I am able to stand, I will never retreat just because a fight looks hard.

We gathered behind one chap - I don't know his name - who was gleefully taunting the huge Rikti and rallying us all to fight beside him.

    And we did.

My post-battle analysis demonstrates that enough energy was released during that titanic clash to level a large town. As it was, all it did was level an
awful lot of Rikti. Including the four Masters at Arms that they had obviously believed would be sufficient to win their cause.

When the last of them fell, and all that was left was to pick off a few stragglers and strays, I wanted to laugh, to dance with relief, to cry.

However, Shadowe doesn't act like that. I saluted my fellows, bowed, and left, swiftly, silently, into the dark.

  3. This one's been around for ages - After completing the 1st mission of that arc, you are unable to take the second one, and he shows up as an inactive contact, even if you're using Ouroboros to do it.

/Petition it and a GM might be able to help. /Bug it, too, which I have done every time I've tried it.
  4. I've dual-box RPd before. I also have 2 accounts, and on several occasions I've played two completely separate characters on each one, at the same time.

Just so you know - it's not easy. My preferred method has been to have two PCs running side-by-side, one with each account on, using one to read all the text and only hopping to the second keyboard to type something. I'm sure it's possible to do it running two accounts on one PC, but that offers the risk of failing to alt+tab.

Even so, I've made mistakes, with the wrong character saying something meant for the other one, but that's the price of doing business.

It is, however, an awful lot of fun. It's easiest if the characters are engaged in different conversations, because then you can keep the discussions completely separate (though for your concept of one mind, two bodies that wouldn't matter as much), but it is possible to have two fully engaged characters in the same discussion at the same time. It is a lot of work, though, and something that I would suggest people do only sparingly, and if the characters involved are sufficiently different.

My most common dual-boxing RP situation involves my main and his younger sister, at the same place at the same time. I keep them separate by ensuring that they have clear and recognisable vocal mannerisms (my main tends to call women "My dear" and men "Old chap", "old bean" or "old boy", while his sister calls everyone "Sugar") and being able to include those mannerisms in almost any sentence allows me to keep them distinct. It's also useful that they tend to disagree a lot, at least on the surface, meaning that one of them will often take the opposite side in a discussion to the other, further allowing me to keep them apart.

For the record, though, I have also played the following combinations: Main plus his mother, main plus his android servant, main plus a friend, main's sister plus android servant, main plus a completely unrelated character (in separate conversations).

When it works, it's brilliant. When it doesn't, it just looks silly.

Because the Oxford English Dictionary just can't get words right...

    • verb 1 kill or destroy a large proportion of. 2 drastically reduce the strength of.

    — DERIVATIVES decimation noun.

    — USAGE The earliest sense of decimate was ‘kill one in every ten of’, a reference to the ancient Roman practice of killing one in every ten of a group of soldiers as a collective punishment. This has been more or less totally superseded by the sense ‘kill or destroy a large proportion of’, although some traditionalists argue that this later sense is incorrect.

    — ORIGIN Latin decimare ‘take as a tenth’.
Please note that I make no bones about when this transformation occurred, merely to point out that the meaning of the word, in the English language, currently, as it is widely accepted, is different to its original usage, and that a failure to accept that change in usage has the potential to result in the stagnation of a language that is constantly changing, which would damage its rich diversity and ability to assimilate words and phrases from other languages. English is not a "pure" language by any stretch of the imagination, and it changes. A lot. Those changes are made through alterations in common usage, and are not a bad thing.

That is not true of British English. In British English, it depends on what is being quoted as to whether punctuation goes inside or outside the quotation marks. For anyone interested, I strongly recommend "Eats, Shoots and Leaves" by (I think) Elaine Trass.

Onto my pet peeve that is the so-called "Oxford comma" which is that comma before the "and" in a list of three or more things.

Its use is a style choice, ultimately. There is no direct rule for it, but it can sometimes be added for clarity.

"Rain, snow, thunder and lightning" is a list of things describing the weather. There are either three: Rain; Snow; Thunder and lightning. Or it's four: Rain; Snow; Thunder; Lightning. It is slightly ambiguous, but in this context it doesn't really matter. "Mike and Sue, Bob and Helen, Simon, and Rachel" on the other hand, clearly describes FOUR groups of people - if the Oxford comma were omitted, then it would be easy to presume that Simon and Rachel were a couple, which, in the context of the quote is not true.

    Naming Policy

The general consensus on appropriate behaviour when you're concerned about your characters possible name and likeness violation is to send a petition under Harrassment/Conduct (I like to title them "Possible Name and Likeness violation"), explaining the situation and asking for a GM ruling.

One player on the EU servers that I know of did this for his main character, and it was allowed by the GMs - Crimson Archer, a Green Arrow homage. There were enough differences between the appearance and character name that the player was allowed to keep it.

Better to be safe than sorry, is the idea. Petition yourself, explain why you've done so, and let NC make the ultimate decision - once it's been done, you know you're safe, and if anyone else reports you, you will have grounds for appeal in terms of the original petition you made.

Having said that, though, Walkure is a perfectly acceptable name. I've seen one, thought "Oh, Germanic for Valkyrie. Good shout, that man," and not even thought about petitioning them.

    I say unto this... "Huh?"

Let me explain. Firstly, I do not subscribe to the view that any activity taken in-game is roleplaying. Roleplaying is a specific set of activities that include (but are not strictly limited to) acting and speaking in-character. That's it. When I'm RPing, my Local and emote chat will be things that my character says and does. If I'm not RPing, or I'm saying something on almost any other channel, then it's me talking.

Castle mentioned that there are "unwritten rules" that govern our conduct and behaviour, and one of those unwritten rules is that if you are in a PvP zone you are fair game for PvP. If I am in a PvP zone, and I am RPing, I accept that other characters may attack mine, and that such attacks may have nothing to do with the RP I'm involved in. Hell, that's happened to me. I did not petition the player involved, because my choosing to take my RP into a PvP zone I made the explicit choice to accept that I may be attacked.

However, when I am in a non-PvP zone, engaged in social discourse, I have made an implicit choice to avoid such a circumstance. Now, people who encounter my character may choose to do a number of things.

    1) Join in the RP. This would be my favourite choice, as I welcome anyone who wishes to RP with an open mind.

    2) Ignore the RP and enter out-of-character discussion with me. I don't mind this. I will usually take it to /tells, to keep my Local chat clear for the ongoing RP conversation.

    3) Ignore the RP and not engage me in conversation. This is fine by me. When RPing, I tend to pay no attention to people who are not RPing - their characters are not there, as far as mine are concerned, and I will only acknowledge them in-character if they choose to act in-character. (Please note, this is not me attempting to force any behaviour on anyone - it is simply the yardstick that I use when determining the sort of interaction I will undertake with others.)

    4) They may attempt to interupt the roleplaying through out-of-character means. If this is done, I will politely request that they cease their disruptive behaviour, and if they persist, I will petition them for harassment. It takes an active choice on their part, not mine, to behave in such a fashion, and I have no fear of raising it with the appropriate authorities.

Therefore, if I am in a PvP zone, I have made the active choice to be there, and the consequences of that choice are on my head. I cannot and do not blame others for choosing to enter PvP conflict with me, since it was my choice to be in a place where that was possible.

Thus, the choices of someone encountering me in a PvP zone are different (assuming that I am a valid target for PvP).

    1) Join in the RP. See above for my feelings on this.

    2) Join in the RP, but also add PvP combat to the mix. This spices things up nicely, and is fine by me as a roleplayer, provided that the conflict follows as a natural part of the RP.

    3) Not join in the RP and engage me in conversation. See above.

    4) Not join in the RP and ignore my presence. See above.

    5) Not join in the RP and engage me in PvP combat. This is the price of doing business in the PvP zones, and I will retaliate to the best of my ability. I will cease RPing for the duration of the fight, and the outcome of the fight will have no bearing on the RP in which I was engaged. I will simply pick back up where I left off, after I've returned from the hospital. Attacking someone in a PvP zone is not harassment in and of itself. It may, under certain circumstances, become harassment, for example should the attacker persist in attacking me at the expense of other potential targets, but in that circumstance I still have the choice to remove myself from the PvP zone, which is my preferred course of action under those circumstances.

Ultimately, in a PvE zone, I should be able to undertake any activity that suits me, provided that the activity I choose does not impinge on the enjoyment of others. In a PvP zone I am explicitly opening myself to combat with other players, and it is I who must amend my behaviour to conform to the game-mechanics reality of the zone.

In further rebuttal of the above-quoted post, I do not consider "badging" to be a roleplaying activity, since it does not fit, in and of itself, within the category of activities that I believe constitutes RPing. Now, that is a matter of personal opinion, and if anyone wishes to /petition for harassment against someone in a PvP zone, then feel free. I strongly suspect that the GMs will agree with me and pretty much just laugh at such.

    Yeesh people...
This is a point that seems to be missed somewhere between the EU and the US. I hear "horror stories" about public RP on the US servers quite a bit, really, but I have never witnessed anything like it on Union. If you go into Union Pocket D, odds are you'll find some people around the blue-side bar drinking and chatting. If you go to Galaxy Girl statue after 9.00 UK time, you'll find a some people hanging around, chatting. That's pretty much it, ignoring things like people being Tools and trying to screw things up for everyone else.

Yes, "Adult" RP does happen, but every roleplayer I've encountered on Union has been mature enough to understand that people really don't do that stuff in public, so they take it to SG bases, mission maps and the like. Places where they won't be inflicting the (potentially) graphic nature of the RP on the general public.

Thus, when in public, the general consensus amongst the RPers that I have personally had dealings with (and bearing in mind that I am one myself) is "live and let live". As long as people don't try to spoil our fun, we are happy to let them have theirs. We (yeah, okay, pretty sweeping statement, here) don't intentionally interfere, and we don't break beyond PG13. On at least one public chat channel for RPers I even know there is a moderated "Watershed" before which swearing is not tolerated.

Anyone who has experienced differently is either in locations that are not commonly used for public RP or are on a server that is not Union, and I refuse to be tarred by the same brush as others who have no regard for their fellow players.

  14. For anyone interested, the harassing player mentioned in the OP was back last night, doing the same thing, which resulted in further petitions from a number of different people under "Harassment/Conduct".
Said player continued to state that he was "roleplaying" (and I use the term VERY loosely) a character who was testing teleporting in Pocket D, using this as an "excuse" to a) not talk to anyone in-character and b) use teleport to "nudge" people - into furniture, out of the chalet, and so forth.
Within an hour there were not less than two GMs in-zone, and the player vanished. I cannot say for certain whether the GMs banned the player, though it seems likely, under the circumstances.
So, in answer to the OP - yes, there is a hard line taken against harassment in-game, whether RP is involved or not.
The true difficulty here is what actually constitutes harassment, and for this I borrow the Oxford English Dictionary...
    harass
    • verb 1 torment (someone) by subjecting them to constant interference or intimidation. 2 make repeated small-scale attacks on (an enemy) in order to wear down resistance.
    — DERIVATIVES harasser noun harassment noun.

Considering that the player in question continued with his behaviour despite repeated polite requests that he stop, his behaviour actually fits both meanings quite adequately.

The simple fact of the matter is that we all sign up to the EULA whenever we enter the game, and harassment is not allowed. The GMs have a right and a responsibility to attempt to ensure that harassment of any sort does not occur, and the act of petitioning ensures that they are made aware that someone believes action needs taking.

Still, I am aware that the GMs cannot constantly be on the lookout for something like this, and as Castle said, they won't always take prompt or, indeed, any action. I do not believe that this should be seen as a sign that they do not care about this sort of behaviour, but simply that there are limitations to the processes in place, as well as a certain amount of discretion on the part of the individual GMs involved.

Now, I'll be the first to admit that I was annoyed by the player's behaviour - more that he chose to continue with his "constant interference" and "repeated small-scale attacks" after being politely asked to stop than anything else, really - so I am glad of the outcome, assuming that he has, indeed, been banned. The rest of the evening passed without incident - there was the usual crowd of RPers (not cybering, I'll point out), as well as people looking for BNY teams, crafting stuff at the elf, and calling out for buffs to do the ski runs. It was rather nice.

Why don't the RPers use private chat or some channel.. why MUST they use local in those areas? I'm sorry but its so freaking annoying.. and its like 15 conversations melted into one nonsense stream.
Well... I'd have to say that on Union I've never experienced anyone cybering in one of the common public RP locations, whether that's PD, the Galaxy Girl statue or anywhere else in-game. I'd say we're too busy RPing our characters to get involved in that sort of thing.

As for the reason that RPers use local - a lot of RP centres around emotes and emoting, and since local is the channel in which emoted comments appear, that's where the rest of it appears, too. It would be nonsensical if half the conversation was on one channel and the other half in local. Further, local chat is generally considered by RPers to be "within hearing range", so if something happens outside your local range, your character basically hasn't noticed it.

Thus, to be quite honest, Local is used more by RPers than it is by non-RPers, so there's really very little reason for non-RPers to keep the channel on their chat tabs since, for most communication purposes, they tend to use broadcast and team chat.

  17. Just one thing - check that the pacts actually ARE broken - do you still have the Levelling Pact chat channel active, and is XP still being dumped to the pact? There was a recent undocumented change which means that pacted toons no longer show up in the levelling pact window unless they're actually online at the same time.
  18. Your video driver is showing as the 169 version according to that.
  19. Long-time GM, long-time plot-runner in CoH.

I've got something like 20 years of GMing experience (tabletop), and since I started RPing in CoH (Union forever!) I've tried to be involved in plotlines and run plotlines when the mood strikes.

Birdy has a point about large-scale plots - they're a nightmare to get right. It requires the active agreement of a phenomenal number of people, and the amount of stress it generates for the plot-master is rarely worth the effort.

The Heroes for The People thing on Union was strenuously objected to by my hero characters for pretty much the reasons Birdy notes above - they received pamphlets and letters that appeared to read "the people lauded as superheroes by this city do not deserve the recognition they get". For a couple of people who have saved the world any number of times, that's rather insulting. I understand the OOC reasoning behind the idea (which I liked), but the way it was presented in the game world was, frankly, execrable.

The biggest plot I've taken part in was the Requiem War (and THAT was one almighty argument just waiting to happen - and it did, apparently), which was a lot of fun, didn't fundamentally change the game world in any way (it scored big points with me for that bit of plotting), and allowed heroes to feel like they made a difference. The forums were fundamental to ensuring the smooth running of the plot. Without using them for communication and character development, the plot would have been a mere shadow of what it truly was.

I tend to use the forum as a place to expand upon events for my characters that would otherwise happen "off screen", since I can't play my characters 24/7. It allows for some very nice progression of plotlines (check the last few pages of the IC story thread for recent examples) that would otherwise be stagnant until the right characters can get together in-game.

The one thing that I've always strived for in CoH RP is a coherent history - whatever happens to my characters has always happened to them. So, if something happens in Forum-RP, then I need to know when it is set, so that my in-game RP can be adjusted to suit new information and actions. I absolutely love the shared storytelling that comes out of this game (again, see IC Story thread, recent posts by me, Zortel, Ravenswing and Fea for some beautiful examples of this). Even when a plot is 'mine', I will always make a point of allowing things to be guided by the actions of the players involved (case in point: A while ago one of Birdy's characters, Nitoichi, completely stuffed up a plot of mine. I mean utterly. Ripped it to bits and threw it out of the window. I was ecstatic! The players who were involved made a difference, and changed the course of events for my ongoing plotlines for ages. That's a perfect example of player actions affecting the 'world', even if only for the characters involved).

I don't think I could detatch one of my characters from their 'history' enough to take part in one of the big ongoing RPs here on the forums, because I have to draw a line on "what has really happened" somewhere. I might take one of my lesser known characters into one, at some point, but I don't really think I have the time to do it justice.

Ultimately, though, no one method of RPing is "right" and no one method is "wrong" - just go with what suits you as an individual.
  20. To whom it may concern,

What a trite way to start a letter. But I'm not leaving this to any one person - I'm leaving it to everyone.

My name, in case you didn't know, is Shadowe. People who actually know me tend to call me Richard, since that's what I was named when I was born. Doctor Richard Huntington III. I won't go into the full name - it sounds pompous enough without.

I've been asked to join a group of other heroes on our way to the Rikti homeworld, to take the fight to them. We've been asked to write a letter, to be left to posterity, to explain who we are and why we're doing this. And to say goodbye.

They don't expect us to make it back alive.

I don't expect it will kill me, either.

I want to say something like "ever since I got my powers, I've fought for humanity, and this is the next, logical step". But that would be a lie. And as these may be my final words to the world I love, I can't be sparing with the truth.

I've made a point, over the years, of not seeking to be the great, world-saving hero. I don't know how someone like Statesman does it. I'm disconnected from the world, and I fear daily for the loss of my humanity, as I recognise that the power I wield could turn me into a monster. A monster I truly fear I have become. So, instead of constantly battling the forces of evil that threaten the way of life I have sworn to preserve, I do what I think is the most heroic thing I can: Saving the world, one person at a time.

A close friend once told me that it is not what I am that makes me human, but who I am. And that my depth of caring ensures that I am as human as any person who walks the face of this brilliant jewel on the Heavens we call Earth.

I was shamed by those words, because it has nothing to do with caring. My actions are selfish ones. I want to prove to myself that I am still human, not a monster, and it is a daily struggle to remember what that means.

I have loved, I have lost, I have laughed, I have let go. I have made friends, made enemies. I hope that I have made this world a better place, for some.

That is all can think of to say, as I prepare myself to make the ultimate sacrifice, so I will leave you with these words:

A hero is someone who does the right thing, no matter the cost to themselves. A hero protects others who cannot protect themselves. A hero is selfless, giving of themselves always, never asking for anything in return.

I do not see myself as a hero. I'm just trying to do the best I can, in my own selfish way. What others choose to call me is up to them.

    Goodbye, and farewell.

Goodbye to England, for expect I will never see you again.
Goodbye Cassandra, my darling, for everything that was, and everything that almost was.
Goodbye Paragon, for giving me a place I could call home.

    Goodbye.

    Richard.

P.S. Would someone mind feeding April? She's only a little cat, but she needs lots of attention.

    I'm confused. I think I understand what you're saying. Let's see if I'm right:

The sets BaBs has "fixed" are weapon sets (since they're the only sets that suffer from re-draw). This means that if you are in combat range and use a power that causes the weapon to "sheath" (okay, I know, it just vanishes...), and THEN use a power that uses the weapon, rather than re-drawing the weapon, it will insta-appear and fire the attack.

This means that, for example, if you have a DB/Regen, rather than having to re-draw every time you use one of your secondary powers, you can just keep attacking.

The way I've read your comments, it sounds like you think this change will only affect powers used in the powersets mentioned, so if another power not in those powersets is used, redraw will still occur. This is not the case. The fix is that those powersets will not redraw if you are in range of target. That's it. End of story. Doesn't matter what other powers you have or use, if you fire off one of the weapon powers from those powersets, and you are in range of the target, there is no draw animation.

Good eye. That is indeed the one, the only, Crimson Archer.

Draw the World Together is a charity run to raise money for disadvantaged kids, by providing great artwork of whatever you fancy. When NCSoft still did European shows they'd hire them to do some fantastic pics of our characters. It's one of the parts I miss about the shows nowadays, DTWT are still going strong though, and that's some amazing artwork from David...as is usual
LINKY for anyone interested in DtWT.
  23. My brand-spanking new GTX 275 should handle things quite nicely. It was a pain to fit in the box, and my 550W PSU is stretching to power it, I believe, but it works FINE.
  24. Mine is the name of my first CoH character, also my first 50, and my global on the EU servers. Character was meant to be "Shadow" originally, but of course that's a blocked name, so I spent a minute coming up with alternatives that would sound the same (and without resorting to the dreaded "dot at the end"). Shadowe it became (though a lot of people pronounce the "e", which is okay by me).

My general online name is Chemlak, after my favourite ever PnP RP character - if you spot a Chemlak online (except on youtube, where I missed the name, damnit!), it's probably me.
  25. [British joke] I know it's not really right with the theme, but Sick Squid always tickles me as something for someone with an aquatic theme who would constantly owe money to people. [/British joke]

    SORRY!
