Quote:Heh... I'll have to look for that."Council Empire" Earth actually still has a giant 5th Column banner right at the zone-in (building on your left as you enter) which is pretty amusing to me.
Well, there you go then. Reichsman knows about the 5th Column because Axis Amerika has 5th Column too. Otherwise the banners wouldn't have been there. -
-
Quote:Wasn't Axis Amerika liberally decorated with 5th Column banners back before it was switched over to the "Council Empire" map that's liberally decorated with Council banners? To my understanding, the 5th Column did this "temporal strongholds" antic a number of times and eventually wound up back in the present due to the war with the Council, after which they went into hiding... in the present.
Why the inter-dimensional Reichsman suddenly knew of and swore his allegiance to the 5th Column the moment Roderick Mueller released him from the abandoned Freedom Phalanx base in Boomtown is unexplained (see: retcon discussion). But it was rather rubbed in our faces that he's the reason the 5th Column are active in force once again. -
It's a compensation for the lengthy server downtown a couple days ago.

Quote:Well it's not a very good retcon if most of it didn't actually go through. On Test, the Ubelmann arc was changed to this. After a massive hue and cry on the forums, it and much of the rest of the retcon were rolled back to forms that can still be seen in places in-game. (Did they ever fix the Atlas Park GIFT guy who says Atlas died in the 50s?)
Why it was done (and now mostly undone) is open to speculation, but it wasn't a "storyline development". It was a retcon. -
-
And here people complain about the devs deciding our own motivations for us. Decide for yourself why your vigilante finally becomes crooked.

Quote:I seem to recall the 5th Column being mentioned on the plaque under Atlas' statue. Or am I hallucinating that?Uh, completely rewriting all the text in game, including the historical plaques scattered around the city, to remove every single reference to a villain group, often replacing them with a vague reference to an unnamed enemy group, is "storyline development"? Really? While the Devs did some time later say that the total removal of all references to the 5th Column everywhere in the game was the result of an overzealous intern or something, i would still say that retcon (retroactive continuity aka rewriting the past) describes what happened far better than "storyline development".
Yeah, that's all in the past now, but to me someone trying to claim rewriting the game's text to expunge all mention of an enemy group is storyline development is someone who is living in a river in Egypt. -
Just to nitpick, but it's "god moding," the etymology being from God Mode in first person shooters. "Modding" is a misspelling that just won't die.
Oh how I long for Rhy'Din again when everyone used to get it right despite throwing around the word "moder" like it was going out of style. -
Quote:Devs denied it had anything to do with the German law. And that's not a retcon, that's storyline development. You'll also note that many issues later, the 5th is back with REICHSman as their leader. The 5th Column was utterly removed from the game and replaced with the Council. Even Burkholder's description was modified to reference "another villainous group."
Something about the 5th Column really spooked the devs so bad they gutted it completely. And not long after, CoH was released in Germany.
Yes, I know Reich is German for Empire, but after the 3rd Reich, it's a little hard to disassociate it with Naziism in the modern day. -
Quote:It's also an alternate reality ostensibly named AXIS Amerika.Well, it's an alternate reality, as evidenced by the interdimensional travel and super powers and what-not. I always thought of the 5th Column as some arbitrary, non-descript German military group not related to Nazism... Something like the Malta Group, but for super-serum soldiers.

Quote:You keep mentioning a "retcon."Are you under the assumption that I believe the 5th Column to be Italian?
Quote:Logic is clearly lost by this point, obviously, as you've resorted to flaming
Quote:and jumping to conclusions. What other gems will you put to use in your attempt to "win" an interpretation of a retcon?

Quote:It was considered, but if you read further.Incidentally, there's a brief article on the wiki, regrettably without sources, touching on tidbits of information in regards to the 5th Column retcon.
Among them is the statement that the devs at one point planned to specify the 5th Column as Italian rather than German. It's a bit farfetched that they would consider revising their intellectual property unless legal issues got in the way.
Quote:All 5th Column re-appearances have been the original 5th Column, not Italian fascists. -
Quote:Have you ever seen a Swastika IN THE GAME? Again, these bannings were because of the symbols.Strange, then, that Germany has banned video games for that very reason.

Quote:That law doesn't mean what you think it means. As is so often the trump card on the internet, a little research goes a long way.
While the law doesn't come right out and say "don't specify that your characters are Nazis," it does definitely fall under the guidelines laid out in Strafgesetzbuch section 86a. If nothing else, it's borderline enough that the NCsoft legal department required the retcon as a safeguard:
For the confused, we're talking subsection (1) sentence 2 and the definition specified in subsection (2).
Can you tell me just where in this lineup of symbols the fictional 5th Column skull with a V symbol appears? I don't see it.
The law applies to SYMBOLS and PROPAGANDA not fictional portrayals of Nazis.
And there's never been a retcon. -
What.
The German law forbids no such thing. It forbids displaying the Swastika in public. That's about it. And the 5th, last I checked, are still Nazis. Hell, their new leader, Marc Bison as I like to call him, is named "Reichsman." You can't get more Nazi than that. -
Quote:Well, consider the source material. Comics have been doing Nazis for ages.Actually, to me, it is a huge letdown. This is a supers MMO and rarely feels like it. I really thought the Barracuda SF kinda stunk. Nazis have too strong a presence in this game.

Actually, most posts I've seen are complaints about the Praetorian-themed pets in Lore. The homogenized archetype decriers are actually very rare.
