Quote:urfff i just wonna play on a populated server again! sick of logging on and finding no one online! i did a random serch the other day 2 people in atlas park!!!! no jokin 2 on union at 11am think it was a tuesday i was shocked! did another random search 53 people on in total its shocking and scary we NEED a list merge and i dont see whats holding them back!?!?
if you read this post war witch is there any reason they wont do a server LIST merge???
everytime this question gets asked we always get the same reply just there are no plans blah blah blah but they never give a reason why?
there are a lot of loyal players here in the EU community yet it seems the only way we can join a better community is if we pack up and move to eu servers manually losing all toons vet rewards etc and thats just not fair! were only gonna be kept quite a little longer many players have left for the US already so any hope of them returning when GR launches isnt gonna happen
can we get more insight into this in game development that you guys think is gonna help us out? the leaving it secret isnt keeping us on edge if anything its Pi***ng us off still not knowing the fate of the EU future.... were still pumping money into the game that we could be using to start an US account if the final answer is gonna be were closing eu servers not enough interest move to us servers or stop playing!?!?!?
You're making several unwarranted assumptions here.
We do not NEED a server list merge - what the EU community needs for its long-term health and stability is more players logging in to play.
A "better" community is not simply a more populous one - the community itself needs to function well to be effective and both English speaking servers definitely have that.
War Witch has stated that things are afoot so let's see what they are - give her a chance to respond before we jump any guns.
There are three fundamental problems with the EU servers:
1) low population
2) lack of character slots compared to NA players
3) inability to team with the wider community.
If the last 2 items could be addressed in some manner, then we'd go a long way to fixing the first. -
Some very good points
I must admit I'd meant to address the inequalities of slots in my OP, but I was aware it was already turning into a novel. However the lack of slots compared to the US is a problem. I'm almost at max on Defiant and that's after I moved some retired toons to Union.
I do like the idea of a Temp Passport... but the danger is that it could become "the norm" that everyone logs in and moves to "Server X" for a while - which then becomes bloated at the expense of the others.
Herc's also made a good point about the connection. I understand that it's not the servers themselves but the networks to and from them that's the bugbear so very difficult to resolve. If the servers were physically transferred to the USA the Brits would be fine, but the French, German and other EU nationals would likely have problems. At least, that's my understanding - but if those issues could be addressed it may well entice former players to return.
I think one thing maybe we don't give enough attention to is "Server community" - it does seem that Defiant has a very cool community and several others do also but I can't comment on others - and yes we would need to be careful about not losing that IMO -
Ok we've had it in blue and white (or whatever colour your forum theme is for these boards) from WW that there are no plans to merge the servers.
I figure it's about time to discuss the possible options available and maybe get a feel for player preferences - and maybe even turn up some unconsidered suggestions.
My own feeling is relatively simple: I would like to see more equality between the EU and NA servers, (ie only 2 English speaking servers available to me compared with plenty more on the other side of the pond.) I'd also like to see a LOT more traffic on my server.
Closing any server, whether dressed up as a merge, rationalization or for any other reason, is a bad thing politically. It would send entirely the wrong signals to the game players and the industry alike - not to mention hurt NCs share price I imagine. I also don't think it would actually address low population numbers - many of those playing casually on an affected server I'm sure would say "bugger it, I'm not playing this game any more" and cancelling their sub rather than moving. Many would stick with the game, I know - but the benefits of population wouldn't be widely noticed on remaining servers.
A "List Merge" - ie giving all players universal access to all servers - could also be problematic - but at least it would allow people to retain their home server. The down side is that the lower populated servers could end up entirely denuded of population as everyone flocks to a perceived more popular place. It could well be that one or two servers ended up lagging to hell and back while all the others languished, gathering dust.
There's also the possibility of a Guild Wars type system where you team across servers. I've not played GW in an age so I'm struggling to remember how it worked - but that could be a very popular solution: If I can play on Defiant and team with my buddies in Liberty, then it's all good - but I'm not going to pretend I know if it's achievable or not.
There's also a possible "server-less" environment. I guess that's doable if you just have a stack of slots and when you log in, you're in the same place as everyone else - and if that gets filled then a new instance opens up - like popular Hami raids and Mother Ship raids etc. Again, technically I'm not going to speculate if it's possible.
From my own perspective all I want is to team with my friends - many of whom play on servers I've got no access to, and to have a wider choice of people to play with. There's an American mechanics saying: "There's no substitute for cubes" - meaning that the size of an engine's cubic capacity is the most important thing when delivering performance. When it comes to this game, there's no substitute for bodies, that's what keeps everything alive. Good teams are what make the experience for me - and for most MMO players I imagine. -
you didn't get merits because you didn't deserve them! ;-)

Quote:Look, for the last time, "It's theoretically possible" does not mean "We'll have it ready by Thursday."
That's not how it works! A developer is an alchemical machine for transmuting sugar and caffeine into code.
And who was it that agreed to the deadline without letting the people who'll have to build the damned thing getting a word in edgewise, huh? Or who made sure that half of the developers' time was spent on "this quick change I promised the customer has the highest priority too"?
Oh, our personal builds are all that. We just don't put it into the release builds, since we hate Sales. :-p
Hey what can I say? You tell me you can do everything and only deliver a very small part of it! ;-)

Quote:Hey, now. I certainly hate Marketing. Not as much as I hate Sales, though. *hiss, spit* For a software developer, they're the enemy.
ok I need to qualify
I was not speaking in general terms. I was trying to aim my vitriol specifically at NC "marketing" not marketers in general.
Sure, I know how you geeks hate sales guys. Christ knows I've sold so many systems you've failed to deliver on the back of your failed promises. If only you cleaned up your act and stopped snacking crisps and sweets by the water cooler we'd actually get some work done right?
But yanno, it's ok. I'll drive another 1500 miles and make another 500 minutes of calls (whilst driving illegally) just so you can have more chocolate. Srsly, it's perfectly ok. Cuz I know the code you deliver (two weeks past client deadline) will be bug free, perfect and I just know in my heart of hearts that you anticipated the clients unspoken question and added that secret widget that will triple his business out of the goodness of your heat.

If you don't merge the server lists, no matter what new system you're planning, then the EU side won't last for much longer. Sure, GR will bring some old and new faces back but after a few months, the servers will be back to how they are now.
Save your selfs some money (Assuming less development time) and just merge the server lists. Do it with GR and positively promote the merge. It's a good thing, not bad.
Give out free transfers again for a fortnight or so and jobs a good 'un. You have a happy EU player base. Hopefully happy enough for another 5 years.
Most of these claims are unsubstantiated.
I agree it's worrying. But I'd like to at least get an inkling of what's planned before condemning it out of hand. -

You seem to be sugegsting somehting like this:
Some Players: We hate marketing!
*Marketing person makes a forum acocunt*
Marketing Person: Hi, I'm a marketing perosn.
Some Players: We hate you!
How does that help anything?
I'm suggesting that once we get past the clear and obvious "We hate marketing" (which is actually not true... we just have an incredibly low opinion of some incompetent twanks who don't actually do as much to promote the game as many of the player base) we can then actually test their mettle.
Many of us in the past on both sides of the pond have made suggestions that have never seem to see the light of day - and not because of lack of finance either. Look at some of the videos that people like Samuraiko have produced (purely for the love of it) and yet when "Marketing" break their silence they drop a massive bollock with the GR website breaking the news months ahead of schedule by accident. That's just one example.
If we got a marketing rep in here the rant would be fairly short lived - once our voice is heard we tend as a community to become pretty rational. Then we can firstly ask "What are you doing to promote X, Y & Z?" and also then give our input into "Have you considered this tactic?"
Bear in mind that in the EU, the marketing presence of NCSoft has a smaller footprint than a polar bear in the Gobi desert it could well be they might actually be grateful that they get inside info into what works here. Not all of the EU works the same as the whole of North America when it comes to getting into a market place as Lockheed, Hewlet Packard and DC Comics will attest to.
A shorter version of the above: 2 way dialogue cannot hurt the game - and the Faceless Ones can a) Reassure those who feel left out and b) Actually learn something - and maybe even c) find a way to grow the game without spending huge amounts of money.
Difficult to comprehend much?
Edit to add this minor point: We're paying customers. We have a relationship with NC no matter whether we or they like it. As their revenue stream, it's not a huge amount to ask what their long term strategy is for our client base. -

Quote:Pretty much agree.
They will be torn apart like a lump of meat thrown into a pack of hungry wolves.
Yeps.
Which is a terrible indictment of them. Maybe they need to actually get their faces in here, and let people rant at them.
Then once the ranting's done - and it will be short and sharp knowing how generous this community is generally - we can actually get a proper dialogue going - they can give us insight into what they are doing/planning and we can provide feedback about how things are working for us. -
Nemesis is great. Let's not forget - it's the player meme that really kicked him off - the whole "Nemesis plot" thing came from the player base and the Devs took it and ran with it, promoting him up the ranks.
I like the Center too... the very fact there's a kind of evil mastermind (small m) who never gets to be seen and controls huge factions of fascists is exactly how it should be done - someone with a long reach but personally untouchable.
I would love the Vazhilok to be given some more "oomph" - they are such a great villain group and yet their story culminates way too early.
I'd also enjoy seeing more Banished Pantheon - for an ancient death cult and malign gods they seem a bit weak for their story line. (Or at least, in game it's not obviously apparent how much power they wield.)
I'd also like to see the guy on the loading screen with the pony tail and tatoos used in game. Never seen him - don't even know his name.
And Willy Wheeler needs to get revenge on the villains that busted him. -
I think the OP made this up. There's never anyone in RV these days

I've enjoyed what I saw there but I think it's way too soon to pass judgement on a power set based on a very few seconds of video. -
Thanks for the reply Melissa, it's genuinely appreciated.
I definitely continue to have issues - but I'm old and cynical and I worked in marketing long enough to know that most of what Marketing says tends to be spin, q.v and doesn't always correlate to real facts.
I am actually ok with "no plans to merge the servers" - but I read your post carefully and what I didn't see is any long term commitment to the EU. "No plans to merge servers" doesn't equate to "We fully intend to grow European market share and continue to support the EU community."
I'm still very worried.
What would be really useful - and I don't know if this is possible - but an opportunity to connect directly with some of the Faceless Ones from behind the scenes via this forum who are responsible for marketing and infrastructure and the like, so that we can grill them face to face, so to speak. Would that be doable at all? -

Quote:That's... not a similar situation at all.
It's more like sticking an non-combat escort into a one-off mission and naming him "Marcus Frekleburger", and having the players claim he's related to Statesman. Or worse, he is Statesman. Which this thread is claiming.
I suggest you reread this thread if you think that's what it's claiming.
If Romulus' are not connected then it does strike me as sloppy bollock dropping by the Loremasters of the Game. -
Irrelevant in this context unless the demographics of both continents have the same percentage of game players.

Quote:In fairness, WW took over and is inheriting plans for stuff up to I20 or there abouts. Much of what is heading our way in future issues has been planned for years before if not longer.I don't think it's 'harder' to revamp an old zone than it is to create a new one but...
They get more 'bang for their bucks' when they create a new zone since people can go 'oooh shiney!' instead of 'it's about bloody time!' when they revamp an old zone.
I agree with the people saying that we've already GOT enough zones, how about revamping the crap and near useless ones FIRST before focusing on 'ooh shiney!'. I had hoped with War Witch incharge the stance would change unfortunately it seems the relentless forward march of the shiney continues.
Positron & WW have both said that it's almost as much work to revamp zones as it is to build new ones. Thus revamping zones is less economically effective. -

Quote:Same though here. It should be renamed to:
Telekinetic Melee: but it sounds weird.
Kinetic Combat: but there's an enhancement set with that name.
Kinetic Assault: but sounds like a ranged set.
Kinetic Manipulation: but sounds like a controler's set.
Hmmm...
Might wanna wait til we see what it involves before deciding what it should be called -
Quote:I think they're very much focused on GR right now, so it might be hard to get them to turn their attention any place else until after July.
Although, if there's any server list merge being planned for the GR launch, then you'll probably hear about it soon-ish.
If that's the case and our concerns aren't addressed by then, there'll probably a few less subscribers to actually worry about.
