I guess without getting into the philosophical debate of what ever one person believes constitutes abuse, I can maybe think of farming repeatable content for levels, and that's simply this: If you know an AT well, know how both power sets play but haven't yet seen them combined, then build a concept toon and just get the low stuff out the way.

Would I want to run to 50 like that? No chance. But I'd be happy to run through to maybe 25-28.

But then when do you draw the line? What's an acceptable level to stop? That's a question I don't have an answer to.

  3. ok and also Invincible Woman

she's a scrapper but is Kin/Inv... and I'm liking that despite it not seeming to be very controlly/AoEy but still fun. I guess to be truly invincible she'd want to be more tanky but hey...
  4. I actually love the fish bowl but I would really love the ability to have a "normal" head (with and without mask) inside it too.
  5. Her origin is Darjeeling.

    She's also a trademark
  6. Well I've gone with two suggestions so far:

John Bull is a spines/fire scrapper and I've got to say he's a blast... I've run him through a DFBs and he's doing great. I slotted spine burst with the KD enhancement and that's added to the fun factor

Matilda Sherman is an Ice/SS tanker and she's actually not so bad - but a lot slower but is in very large part due to the fact she's soloing the low Praetorian content. But she is able to take a hammering, and although her DPS isn't high she's proving interesting.

One thing I'd not factored in is the Blackwand and the Nemesis Staff. They've just been part of my attack chain with the Nem being a good "go away and never bother me again" mitigation tool, but they come into their own with either getting attention or knocking over the last couple that have decided to wander off.

Thanks to everyone for their advice here

Also, to the OP and general thread, I'm (to a degree) surprised there hasn't been mentioned a lot about Stalkers, which I personally like a great deal! I think they might be able to be fun to you Scarlet, because although some of the sets don't add much AoE, every set can if anything offer you Fear, which to a well working Stalker can be all the control needed in order to finish it's work thanks to the frequent critical hits! What is your impression of Stalkers?

Really good point. I love fear as a control set - it seems to be one of the most devastating limited holds in game and honestly I never realised Stalkers had that ability. Is that an Inherent?

I only played one Stalker to about lvl 20 and then she was consigned to the round file marked "B" so maybe I should try one just to see. My main impression as I think I've said is they aren't up to much once they've delivered their initial punch - but that's my perception rather than any real data, mostly gleaned 2nd hand.
  8. Ok this is rapidly becoming a great thread and very informative chaps. Thanks for all your feedback.

Tanks are Earth. They are the rocks upon which others shatter themselves. They're not fast, but they're dependable. Playing one well means you can survive things that would kill just about anyone else, and that's where the real fun is.

Scrappers are Air. They move as they please, landing in an area, filling it with chaos, and then moving on when they're ready. They can't take the damage a Tank can take, but they don't need to work to keep themselves going like a Brute does. Impulse and luck are the Scrapper's way.

Stalkers are Water. They may seem all wet, but once they get into your house, you'll soon find that the "harmless little drip" does a lot of damage. Squishier than most, playing one solo is mostly about jumping out and going "Boo! Got your spleen!", and then dealing with your victim's upset friends. Playing one on a team means you may not get to use your big attack very often, but you can still do good damage to start things off, or help with stealthing missions. Except for ambushes, playing a Stalker tends to let you pick and choose if you really want to bother with most of the fights in a mission or not.

I love this. The Devs should use this on the we page! Thanks

Spines/Fire Scrapper - AoE masters of disaster. If you ever got a glean on for a Fire Blaster, then you might like this choice. The major difference being you are in the middle of the carnage. At higher levels the damage gets well-nigh ridiculous... Picture this... you leap into the center of a spawn with both Quills and Blazing Aura doing auto-damage to everyone within range at the same time... you let loose with Spine Burst to decimate the minions then throw Impale at the strongest enemy to Immobilize them near you... hit Burn which does surprisingly good damage over time to those still living... then, in case you're running a bit low in the tank... hit Consume which does yet more AoE damage while helping to replenish your endurance. The trade-off is Fire isn't the best defensive set protection-wise so you will likely face plant a bit more often than your average Scrapper... but you're used to playing blasters so you may be used to being squishier.

Energy Melee/Electric Armor Brute (or Tank) - As close to a control set as you can get from a Brute. Electric Armor has some of the best endurance drains in the game. Combine this with the natural stun capabilities of Energy Melee and you have a set that has some very strong synergy. I typically wade into battle and strike first with Whirling Hands, a PBAoE attack which has the potential to stun everyone it hits although mostly you'll only see minions staggering about. I follow this up with Power Sink which not only drains your enemies to practically nil endurance, it also replenishes your own. I have Lightning Field slotted mostly with Accuracy and Endurance Modification. The main advantage of LF is NOT to do damage to your opponents but to keep them from replenishing their endurance once you've drained it. I call the En/El Brute a control set because it is great fun to stand in the middle of a spawn of enemies who can only stand and stare at you while you pound them, unable to get together enough endurance to do more than scream in terror.

Just a couple ideas you could try.
I think I already said I've got an all-elec brute - Scarlet Shocker reinvented for Exalted. (The original is an all elec blaster of course - and over the years I've had a love hate relationship with electric as a set but once you know it's capabilities and limitations Elec is very cool - except in PVP nowdays.) but you have totally sold me on a spines/fire armour scrapper!!! Thanks

    Brilliant stuff!
  9. ok I've got to say I'm not terribly keen on Shield Defence. It really hasn't moved me

I also have never liked the look of stone and fire shield... well let's just say that one fo my first friends in game was a fire/fire tank way back when... and that seemed very squishy, but I like the idea of something like Fire Shield/SS just for kicks.

But MajorDecoy raises an important point: I probably am less in tune with the subtle (or perhaps unsubtle) differences between Brute/Tank & Scrapper/Stalker.

Why wouldn't I want to play a brute? I had always thought that a Tanker was more resilient but less damaging than a brute, which was repeated through scrapper & stalker. Sure you get variations like Fury and Stealth but that was the extent of the differences.

    What else have I missed?

That's easy. Control + AoE = Happy Scarlet

Anyway, does it have to be a brute or scrapper? You mentioned thorns, and a /thorn dominator spends plenty of time in melee... with lots of runner stopping options.

Or a bane spider if you have SoA access. You liked the mace well enough... and a bane can add some of the blasts for flavor.

And even though you have to pay for it... Street Justice fits a whole lotta concepts... and is easily the most fun on a melee guy I've had! (all both of them that havent been deleted!)

I have a plant/thorns dom at 50 and she's mostly retired now. She was fun to get there but I far prefer my all-elec dominator. I've also got a SoA at 50 but he's very much a bloke with a big gun that does a great job of shooting stuff. Not so much melee.

I've also played with a couple f widows. One is languishing at 40ish and another is starting afresh.

I guess I'm also curious as to why I've not traditionally played melee, (My WS tends to be tri-form but only for purply goodness and then gunships) and I'm interested in having a go.

Ok fair comment. Sell me a tank then!

I've never managed to get a scrapper or brute past level 26. Some people love them, I don't understand it. On the other hand, of my nine level 50 characters three are Stalkers, and two are tanks. I have another four tanks that I play regularly.

I haven't managed to get a mastermind or a controller past level 6.

I have a warshade at level 33 I'd really like to enjoy, but I just can't manage it. I'm considering deleting her and starting her as a peacebringer. (I've looked at the MFing warshade guide, and that just doesn't look fun to me. I don't particularly like Hasten)

I mean, I can suggest lots of builds that I found fun, but I can't say that you'll like them.
ok it's important that I clear a misunderstanding up. I never force myself to play anything. I'm asking the question because I'm curious more than anything. I've actually mostly enjoyed the toons I've mentioned, and I'm hard-hearted enough that if I really don't like a toon, it gets binned, even an incarnate toon can go that way once I've asset stripped it. Some might lie fallow for a long time like my MM or Warshade and I have levelled many to 50 and let them retire once there, but I'm actually interested in playing more melee. I've recreated Scarlet Shocker on Exalted as an all-Electric Brute and she's doing ok so far, at level 15. So maybe a few more Brutes may be in order
  14. Couple of interesting points here

For my Brute, it was concept. His name is Kwiturbitchin and is just an interesting thug, using a pipe wrench for a weapon and looking generally scruffy. He's now very slightly incarnate but he's about 4 years old and took ages to get to 50.

As for my shield scrapper, he's come to a grinding halt and frankly I'm not enjoying him.

well the look of a spines scrapper doesn't bother me - and it's reasonably rare these days I guess but I wasn't aware it had good range.

I should maybe also point out it's not "runners" per se that are the issue it's the fact that when you get a large mob spread out you can end up running around a fair bit whereas with blaster/trollers (my main ATs) you just stand there and hold/blast them to oblivion.

Writing this has reminded me of a time when I was first playing the game - and I was playing some kind of scrapper and it was in the troll caves (must've been the Hollows - we did that a lot then) and some chap was playing an energy blaster. Every time I got near a target he took it out from under me - I guess he was targeting through me so every time I got close... bam he'd blast the target away so it turned into that something resembling Lee van Cleef, Clint Eastwood and the stetsons.

From other dabblings, I don't think I could bear to level a tank to 50. I seem to recall their damage to be so poor it makes a controller look tough. Not at all sure about a stalker so maybe another brute or scrapper. Of those, a brute seems preferable but if you ask me why I'm not sure lol
  15. I've been playing CoH for five and a half years but one of the few types of toon I've never gotten to grips with is melee. I've only ever managed one melee character to 50, a WM/SR brute. My 2nd highest by a long way is a level 40 MA/Shield scrapper - and whilst I have plenty of concepts, I've never managed to get any others past level 24.

I've played blasters and controllers to death. I've probably deleted more 50s than I've created melee toons - and yet when I get one to a reasonable level I tend to mostly enjoy them.

So why do I find it difficult? I'm not honestly sure, but I must admit I dislike having to run after targets. With most other toons, target the nearest and zap them from where I stand. And with many blasters I tend to be a blapper anyhow so that's a pretty specious argument.

What I do know is that I'm missing out on a lot of this great game so how do I fix that?

The counter argument to that is that the fan-led sites are often able to devote far greater time and effort into producing that kind of documentation, wheras for the company that produces the game there's a cost they are unwilling to spend a huge amount of $$ resources on.

    I can fly!

Being able to fly is a very common adolescent dream but most people stop dreaming about that shortly after. Maybe the series of dreams last perhaps a year, or two. Some references believe they may be the pressure of up and coming examinations and the onset of puberty and so this is our "future" calling to us where we will finally reach our potential.

Or maybe it's just a wet dream gone wrong.
  18. This last week I've been experiencing some real bad foreign lag and I am beginning to believe that I'm not alone but this is one of the best places to check

My ISP is statistically one of the fastest in the UK and their download speed is closer to what they advertise than almost any other... but just recently I've noticed when I am trying to connect to a server in any non-EU nation there's a massive drop in performance.

Worse, when I connect to the USA, I notice a big drop between East and West Coast. If I'm connecting from the UK to California I can be at down to 2 megs on my bandwidth - 10% of my speed connecting to a UK server. My ping seems to increase too.

I'm not a network engineer, and my ISP (Virgin for those interested) are washing their hands of it saying "nuffink to do wiv us, guv" but I'm noticing that I may not be the only EU resident experiencing this.

If anyone has some enlightening info to share on this, I'd be real grateful.

(PS, Mod note, I know this may also belong in TI&B but I figure it'd be most useful here, initially at least. Please advise if you think otherwise)
  19. Ignore Mr DJ, he's just annoyed by us in the EU expressing any kind of opinion. He does it in a lot of these threads.

In fairness not all maintenance is pre-planned that far ahead and I know that Avatea doesn't always get the time to notify the community far in advance and that's true for other members of the community. Sometimes it's because it's critical, sometimes it's cuz it's a fix just delivered in time , and sometimes it's just what we might call "unforseen circumstances."

Also because the Devs have a stated daily "maintenance window" that can technically run every day they kind of do give us some pretty good advanced warning.

could they do better? Almost certainly but given the issues that have arisen with the release of Freedom, actually they ain't doing so bad I guess. The biggest issue IMO is that it all falls on the peak EU times but there's not much they can actually do about that. Whenever they do maintenance, it'll always give somebody arseache.

Yes it's a PITA, but Avatea and the other CCs do try their damndest to let us know. The simple fact is they don't often know til it's too late.
  20. Phil Spector killed Santa...

as for no smells... didn't you ever fart in an igloo?
  21. Yeps. Well below par and needs addressing very soon.

This is one of the "signature" benefits of being a VIP member and it's not delivering. The content isn't the issue, it's the fact that the notification in game isn't happening.

There are (typically) 8 hours between PST & UTC and 5 between EST and UTC. (UTC is a fancy version of GMT by the way) Most of the EU runs on UTC+ 1 and when the clocks change twice a year it gets a bit out of synch but those kind of times will be good for most people in the EU I'd suggest.

be really good to get a Hami raid going at a time when the EU crowd could make it too. Hami seems to be a lot of fun but on Defiant at least we always managed to epic fail so sadly I'm probably not the best to volunteer to lead it cuz I've never been able to complete it since the revamp
