Quote:I don't know about the quickest way to 50, but a very quick and fun method of leveling when starting a new character is to do the new Sewer Trial. It's not a big time commitment, XP flows fast, there are trainers inside the mission entrances, and it's fun to do, at least a few times. It forcibly exemps you at a fairly low level so as you level up past a certain point you will still get full rewards but won't get acess to new powers.I know that powerleveling is generally frowned on, and I was never a fan of it as the whole point of CoH, to me, was enjoying the arcs, learning skills and tactics as you add powers, etc...that being said, what would you recommend as the quickest way to get to 50? I'm guessing the answer is the standard "run a bunch of scanner missions and get on teams", but I'm open to suggestions.

My Mind/Fire Dom is pretty much tied with my SS/SD Brute as my favorite Incarnate character. Mind/Fire's mix of aggro mitigation tools, AoE and single target damage is pretty awesome. My main concern is splash damage if I'm hanging close to a character drawing a lot of aggro.
My Brute is more sturdy and can cause a lot of localized carnage but the Dom is more rewarding to play. You have to be a little more on your toes, and think a little more tactically instead of just going all "Hulk smash!" -
Maybe I am misremembering this, but my impression was that the change was related to PvP since an FF'er could pin you against something like a bus stop and keep you there. There was a lot of bitter chatter about PvE powers being compromised due to PvP concerns.

Quote:Actually farms are only part of the problem. There are thousands of arcs that were made when AE first came out, for the badges. There are arcs that feature custom enemies that weren't updated for the new XP rules.I have personally heard from many people (over a dozen) that they checked out AE once or twice, everything they searched for came up farms, and gave up.
I'd like to see an aging algorithm added to the AE where an arc that isn't played for [pick a number of months] gets auto-unpublished, and an email is sent to the creator notifying of the unpublish. If the creator wants to keep the arc in the game, it's a simple matter to republish. But it would help weed out old farms, arcs made for experimenting, and just old crap.
Popular arcs (yes, even current farms) would be unaffected and it would ensure that when you searched AE you'd be seeing a mix of newer content and older stuff that the creators cared enough about to spend 3 minutes keeping alive. -
Quote:And just wait until we get those three extra enhancement slots at 25/27/29... People are gonna need them some Mids' for that!Quote:...wait. What?
I mean, that's awesome!
But...this is the first I'm hearing about that.
Hopefully they'll get it worked out sooner rather than later. -
I never desired an Ill/Kin. My favorite controller is my Fire/Kin, not because I'm a farmer, but simply because the powersets synergize so well. Imps have no ranged attacks so they are always in range of the Kin buffs and heals.
But I have to say that I've played with several friends over the years that absolutely loved their Ill/Kins. As previously mentioned they're great on teams and they can solo safely. A great goal is to work towards perma-PA. It'll require a lot of recharge but stacked Siphon Speeds help a ton, and you can also use the Alpha slot for additional recharge. It is pretty cool having a set of invulnerable pets with a taunt aura always available! Plus with high recharge you can have several Spectral Terrors out; that can be a lifesaver in a big room with multiple groups.
Kin is also considerably easier to play now that Speed Boost is an AoE. It used to be challenging to keep a large team SB'd, but it's trivial now. -
Tony and Diellan, I just wanted to again thank you for the work you do on Mids. It's an invaluable tool.

Welcome to the game, Rapthorne!
One thing that hasn't been mentioned yet is that CoH is developing a significant endgame where you work on your Incarnate powers. It's totally optional, of course. But if you do find that character that you fall in love with it's a nice option to have. You can keep working on character progression beyond level 50.
It's still kind of early days for the Incarnate system. There aren't a large number of Incarnate Trials, and 2 of them get played WAY more than the others, so it can feel very grindy since you'll end up repeating them ad nauseum. My hope is over time as they add new iTrials and tweak some of the less commonly played ones, we'll see more variety. It'll still be a big time sink but hopefully a fun one.
Take your time leveling up, though. The journey really is the reward. You will be disappointed if you rush through normal leveling assuming that the endgame is what it's all about. Not so with CoH. -
Oh boy. Does this post count as "inciting a riot"? It doesn't matter that AE wasn't intended as a farming tool. There's a certain population that is going to farm no matter what. You can yell at them, they can yell at you, at the end of the day no one's opinion will be changed even one iota.

The confusing enhancement names drive me nuts. I never role play origins for my characters. I make them all Mutant because of the easy to understand enhancement names.
I like this combination of ideas from this thread:
1) Drop DOs entirely.
2) Make TOs as strong as DOs, which simplifies the game for newcomers.
3) Rename all enhancements so that they include their function in the name, e.g. "Smite of Hermes (Knockback)" -
I've said this before elsewhere but I'll reiterate: I know why they had to make it so you can't use any powers while on the Rocket Board, I get it. But it'd be a million times more useful if it applied toggles were suppressed rather than turned off entirely. In its current form I'll use it if a character has up to 1 toggle, but more than that and I'll use alternatives like the Raptor Pack.

Quote:Hmm, not only is my point balance zero (given what we've seen in this thread it must be zero for everyone), but I note that while I've been an active subscriber since 2005, the account management page is showing my total paid time as 4 years 9 months.Mine is saying my point balance is zero (haven't bought any, but have been subscribed since July).
Even though I've never let my subscription lapse.
This doesn't bode well for the servers coming up soon. -
The devs acknowledged this bug in the Ustream live broadcast and said they're working on it. I'm guessing this is probably part of why the maintenance is going on much longer than planned.

Very cool. Of course we've now come to expect excellence--and you didn't disappoint!

Public service announcement: for anyone new to the game seeing this thread and wondering what these four tracks have to do with Issue 21, the answer is: this isn't an issue 21 post. It's a necropost resurrecting a thread created last year for Going Rogue.
Carry on. -
I don't believe it's customizable in any way.
-
And that is the huge problem for me: it detoggles you. I don't know if this changed in late beta, but when I tested it, I instantly lost enthusiasm when I turned on the rocket board power and my brute's 7 toggles all turned off. If they changed it to suppress toggles, I'd enthusiastically buy it in a heartbeat. But the fact that it detoggles makes it incredibly annoying and of very limited benefit, at least to my toggle-heavy characters.

At the risk of being obtuse, I've never understood the fascination with soloing AVs or GMs. I guess it's just one of those "climb the highest mountain" things? People just do it for bragging rights? It's not like they give good rewards compared to the time spent trying to take them down solo. I just happily have them downgrade to elite bosses and then kick the snot out of them.

Quote:I was just going by what I've seen posted many times in the Questions forum by new players. My impression was that the biggest single complaint from new players was that they thought the game world was nearly deserted. It doesn't matter that it's not the fact, that's just the impression they had.I'd also add the frequently voiced complaint that many who try out the game complain about it feeling deserted because it's so heavily instanced.
-
I don't even attempt to solo AVs or GMs so I can't help you there. I can say that Bot/FF is a terrific combo. Your bubbles stack with the Prot Bots' bubbles. Very easy to solo, very survivable and once you get both upgrades you get a tremendous amount of AoE. I'm sure others will chime in who can compare AV soloing of both sets, but I mainly wanted to say if you do go Bot/FF you're definitely rolling up a strong combo.
-
I think a Force Field defender running Personal Force Field slotted up would be extremely survivable. You'd have to run Dispersion Bubble as well, to prevent mez. Although I'm not sure how it'd fare against extremely high accurace opponents like Ruularu eyeballs or Devouring Earth when they drop one of those crystal pseudo pets. I'd guess you'd be toast at that point. But against most content you'd be invulnerable.
-
I was waiting for the massive prefetch. Does the new updater not do that any more?
-
My most versatile character is an SS/SD brute. With capped defense, mez protection, two damage buffs and lots of AoE it's great for taking on large groups but he also has good single target damage for harder targets. Good for teaming, farming, TF/trials. Not cheap to softcap, but worth it.

I'd also add the frequently voiced complaint that many who try out the game complain about it feeling deserted because it's so heavily instanced.
