More "serious" build considerations notwithstanding, travel powers have always been one of, if not my MOST favorite part of playing this game.
I often just Super-Jump around aimlessly super-parkour-style, just for the fun of it.
Fly is just as fun, but would feel more "super" if it capped just a bit faster.
Super-speed is the least super-feeling travel power for me, I only have it on one of my characters.
And yes, of course I know that I can SJ or Fly with temp packs and don't *need* to use up a power selection taking them, but those don't make me feel as "super". I feel more like a commuter, using a contraption to get me around. I already commute in RL, don't need more of it in my gaming. -

I've never seen those vids before those are FRIKKIN HILARIOUS! I laughed so hard my whole office had to ask what I was watching.
Too bad it was all an "inside joke" for CoH-ers, and I couldn't share!
Wow were those funny.
The first one especially.
Thx Dr. HR!!!
Syfy, I'm on Freedom as well, but don't play Villains much. Look me up hero-side @Cougarific, happy to team with you and answer any questions that might come up!
And, y'know, everyone says Scraps or Tanks to start out, but I'll tell ya - I started out on a Blaster (many years ago), and if you can master the tactics of Blaster-dom, all the other ATs are a *snap* (until you get your Epic at 50 - Kheldians are a bit complex).
P.S. by the way, the standard "rule of thumb" is (or so I've heard/seen here on the Forums), at any time on Freedom, about 2/3 are doing Heroes stuff, 1/3 Villains, so Yes, generally less activity Villain-side. -

So last night in Atlas (on Freedom), I stumbled across an uber-newb and his g/f, both on Trial Accounts.
They were long-time WoW players, coming to CoH because, in his words, he "heard the players were really nice", and the Costume Creator was "awesome".
Invited them both to join me, gave them each some start-up Inf, and ran a few of their early missions with them, explaining various concepts, mechanics, tips, etc. as needed. Was also able to keep them SB'd for travelling.
It was a very rewarding experience, and I intend to try to find some more uber-newbs to help out again tonight, if possible.
I know some, perhaps *many* players already do the same kind of thing, I just want to encourage them, and suggest it as an alternative activity in general if you're feeling bored with whatever you're up to in-game.
And not just for the benefits of building the player base. For me, the time spent with the newbs passed very quickly (2.5 hours in the blink of an eye), and it was really fun seeing it all through their eyes again (after many years of play). It also left me with a nice warm-fuzzy feeling, and reminded me of the first player to take me under their wing as an uber-newb back in the day (Thanks Orion Arms!).
[Of course, 5 minutes after leaving those two newbs, a lowbie called me "another selfish, self-serving hero" for not agreeing to PL him in the AE (as I was about to log off).]
So if you're feeling like you've "hit the wall" on content or TFs or Badging or whatever, let me recommend taking a break, finding some true newbs, and offering your assistance... it is, as I said, very rewarding in many ways. -
Quote:Holy Jeebuz - I was feeling pretty confident that my rig would be able to handle the Ultra, but now...
I'm excited by Ultra-Mode (at work at least my computer can handle some of it)...
Mod8's saying their *work* PC (have to imagine it's a pretty beefy rig) can only handle "some of it"? -

Couldn't see Zombie's vid, so apologies if I'm not telling you anything new, but if you have a Stormie with Hurricane, find an ATM, stand near it, and switch on Hurricane.

I get home from work around 1am ET. There's an Oceanic-friendly server but I'm already well ensconced on Freedom - with multiple 50s earned the old-fashioned way.
Any SGs or regular players on Freedom catering to the late-shift crowd? -
Steelie, you are INCREDIBLE.
Laughed so hard I peed a little. -
Quote:Ok, yeah exactly I do not want to fill up the chat windows. Maybe I could try to add the text as an /afk text instead. Then it wouldn't be as annoying
This is what I was about to suggest - I set some buffs up this way, as a way of giving interested parties some idea of what the buff is doing for them, without cluttering the chat box.
I used to use Local for this, but even without the distracting audio *doink* of a Team chat message, it did tend to clutter the box unnecessarily.
I also use an /afk alert for powers on my /Devices blaster that have long activation times (Trip Mine, Assault Drone), so people can tell I'm not Resting when I go into the kneeling pose. -
Before you get too excited about this, intending to go - read more after the original announcement - I'm a little confused about ticket availability...people are saying tix are sold out on Saturday, but others are saying the meet-n-greet will be held outside the venue somewhere.
Any clarification would be welcome? -

Aett, it's just that, I lurk on these forums, and play this game, precisely BECAUSE I find it a respite from the vapid inanity of just about every other gaming site/forum, and the players are all so smart and funny and kind and helpful.
On any other site, the insults and name-calling would have been par for the course, and I wouldn't even have taken notice. HERE, it really jumps out at me, especially in the Player Questions section.
I've already apologized for lumping one poster in with another, because they used a quote to support the idea, if not the insulting language, of the quoted poster. And perhaps my line about leaving and never coming back was outta line.
But I just want this forum to remain an oasis of intelligent, clever debate and discussion, and feel that insulting someone goes against that ideal.
I've learned my lesson, however, and won't call anyone out publically, no matter how rude their post. That's what the Report Post button is for. -
Quote:Good Penny, I stand corrected. Let's play nice tho, even if something's posted in the wrong section or has been discussed many times before. There are ways to get a point across without calling someone "stupid" "ignorant" and "lame" - which YOU did not, granted, but did seem to endorse the poster who did.Ummm, no. K?
Edit since you needed some examples:

Okay, I'll play!
"Founder" vs. "Flounder"
Ships founder in high seas, meaning losing way (no forward speed), which can lead to "broaching" (turning sideways) and sinking.
A flounder is a type of fish.
The interwebz will tell you that either is okay in modern parlance (e.g. the Administration's policy initiatives foundered/floundered when they lost the majority), but SCREW THAT!
Why?!? is it okay to use the WRONG WORD! One's RIGHT, one's WRONG. Just because enough idiots have used it the WRONG way, that it's now THOUGHT to be correct, DOES NOT MAKE IT CORRECT!
Phew, thanks, I feel better now.
I also have a minor problem with "but yet". "But" & "yet" mean pretty much the same thing, so it's like saying "and also". It's redundant, and IMHO, makes the speaker sound uneducated. -

As others have said, teaming in CoH is a bit different than other MMOs...people aren't playing around outdoors, but they ARE there (especially on Freedom - I recently transfered from another Server and find Freedom very lively compared to my old server).
The most sure-fire way to guarantee you'll be on a full, fun team is to FORM YOUR OWN TEAM.
I do this EVERY NIGHT. I form full, 8-man teams (or PuGs = Pick-up Groups) in under 5 minutes EVERY NIGHT without using Blind Invites.
Here's how, it's very simple:
Use the Search window: "Team" tab & Find button or type /search in chat line.
Play around with the drop-down menus to find various ways to refine your search. Start out basic, by selecting the appropriate levels you're looking for (1-10, 41- 50, etc).
Make a bind: you can copy/paste this into your chat line if you'd like (ctrl-c, ctrl-v): /bind L "tell $target, Level $level-ish team LFM - join us?"
Go down your Search window and target players not on teams (not greyed-out), not showing "Not accepting Invites" (red circle with line thru it, to left of player name), and not in missions already (check Status line).
Click on an eligible teammate and hit your bind key L.
and the next one
and the next one
and the next one...etc.
If you're still having trouble filling the team, consider targeting players who ARE already in missions. I'm always surprised at how many people will happily dump the mish they're in to come out and join a good team.
As I said, I ALWAYS play on a team, and it's ALWAYS a team I form and Lead. It's the best way to be sure of being on a good, full team that keeps things moving and has fun.
The more you do it, the easier and funner it gets. Start now, as a young'un, and you'll be a pro in no time flat.
Do be aware, that as Leader you'll be expected to select the mission for the team, and select a new one on Mission Complete, as quickly as possible.
And basic leadership skills are generally appreciated, e.g. "Regroup on the Tank, please", "Everyone target the Crystal please", "Fall back to elevators NOW PLEASE!" etc. I also use the Kick button sparingly, but without hesitation, if someone is chronically not contributing or being hostile or abusive to other team members. A Private Tell "...this is your only warning." precedes every potential Kick, unless it's about insulting/rude behavior, which gets no warning. -
When I logged on last night I saw an alert: "The NCSoft store is currently unavailable" - they've been having problems with it from time to time, especially around new Issues (updates) and new releases.
I'd give it some time and try again, or poke around on their website for some indication of why it's down & when they expect it to be up again.
But don't be surprised if you don't find any. Like I said, they've had issues with it before, but it's always fixed rather quickly. -

I was totally thinking the same thing watching the downhill skiing events & the luge run. Was itchin to get back on the slopes. Go USA!

From Agge's link: "In addition to the ambient occlusion value, a "bent normal" vector Nb is often generated, which points in the average direction of unoccluded samples. "
erm...Thanks? -
Trying to install -Test, according to Forum directions it's supposed to ask me where I want to install - I want to install to a second hard drive with more room - but it's not asking, just automatically installing to my C: drive, which doesn't have enough room for this - any suggestions?
