I've got a feeling that Statesman isnt actually dead. Sure we all saw him die, but I dont think the figurehead of CoH is gone for good.

Quote:I see what your saying about the mace, maybe I'll experiment with a few colours. Having said that, I think the white and blue mace goes really well with the costume! Anyway, I'd like to thank you for your contribution, you've been a great help to me, you have a real talent for making character costumes, I assure you you'll be given all the credit for Hrothgan's costume. Our friendly neighbourhood Texan already covered importing costume files off the forums, so I'll go straight to the rest.
If you want your tattoos to be black, you'll need to add contrast back to the costume somewhere else. My suggestion, then, would be to return the tattoos to black and swap the boot fur trim to either white or tan. If you want a bit more contrast than even that, you can do the same with the pants patches, though that may be a bit much.
Certainly. I was originally planning to use the smaller beard, but it looked a tad too "manicured" for the design. If you like it, then by all means - use it. It doesn't look out of place. Besides, that way you're less Viking and more barbarian
I would advise against it, myself, just because it blends the costume together a bit too much. When I make a costume, I try to shoot for something that's instinctively simple to "get," because that's also something people find much easier to remember. With the black-and-white mace, you're essentially "the blond guy with the dark pants and blue tattoos." It's a simple concept to grasp just on a cursory look. If you bleed the blue to other pieces, then the eye has to stop and look and the brain has to stop and examine, making the costume less memorable. Of course, if you really want to, I wouldn't object, as it doesn't look bad by any stretch.
Still, the costume can use a signature piece, and this is probably a good place to make one. Considering I've robbed from Conan, Braveheart and Diablo to get this far, it only makes sense to rob from Golden Axe and consider perhaps giving him a golden mace. I believe a gold base with a white trim can make the thing look quite extraordinary and memorable.
If you're worried about introducing a few too many colours to the costume, I do share your concern. However, I feel picking a bright gold that tends towards red will still contrast well enough against the dark brown which tends towards green while at the same time not breaking hue by too much, leaving the bright blue to finish the contrast. White and black typically don't add to a costume's "colourfulness," so the white on the gauntlets and mace shouldn't get in the way. After all, you're combining bright with bright, so they shouldn't overload the costume on contrast.
Or you can go with a pure white mace or a white and blue one, or a white and black one. I really don't feel you can go wrong with the mace unless you do it deliberately -
Quote:I think maybe thats what I should have done! What about replacing the black on the mace, with the blue used for the tatoo's?Looking good.
EDIT: It looks like you may have a free tailor token. If you do, you may want to use it here to avoid the fees.
EDIT: I decided to go through with this anyway. And here's how it turned out:
-
I wasnt too keen on the beard that you had picked, so I changed it to one that I liked better. I also added the eye paint that you had forgotten and made it the same colour as the rest of the tatoo's. What about changing the black on his mace to match the blue of his tatoo's?
-
Quote:I like what you did with everything, all bar the hair colour and the tattoo's. Would it still work with the tat's all black/grey? And how do I get your costume design into my tailor?Having tried it, I don't think so, plus it makes the costume a bit over-bright. That said, this is just personal opinion and I wouldn't insist one way or the other.
I saved the costume after I made it, so a costume file is easy enough:

Quote:I tried looking through all the belts and couldnt find one that was better than the one I already had on. Having said that, I'm happy how he eventually turned out, he may not look like a complete historical barbarian, however the intention was to have a part-historic, part modern-hero look, and in the end, I think I've pretty much got that now. Thanks all for your contributions! You've been a great help! While I like what you've done, since the first post, OP, keep in mind that 'barbarian' was a terminology the Greeks used to describe the Persians in ancient times.
That being said, Persia was a desert land, and clothing that was worn was kept light in color to act as a reflector of the sun, but also as a camoflauge.
Barbarian would have, in some fashion of history, been used to describe the slaves kept as pit fighters (Spartacus for example). It could have also been used to describe someone like Ghengis Kahn as he was 'barbaric' (used in the 'uncivilized' context) in nature the way he took civilizations by storm.
What you're going for looks great, in my opinion. If you do add brighter colors, and if you are going for some historical reference in the way of Ancient Greece 'barbarian slave/pit fighter' the ONLY thing I would do is add a sash/belt and off-set the colors so the primary is the 'brighter' color of the two. Woad Blue/Tan with the Circle of Thorns belt for example.
Either way, it's not like there isn't 10 Costume slots, and you can't sit there and play with it over and over until you are 100% satisfied with it.
A lot of times, I'll make a toon, have a concept costume in mind, and it won't come to full value until long after I've gotten fairly far in the game, and sat in the tailor for hours on end getting that 'perfect' balance of what I want people to see. Hehe, I've been known to skip out on joining teams, more than once, because the costume just doesn't look 'right' to me. -
Quote:You seem to be getting the jist of what I want with my character. I want a classic barbarian look, but still retains some of that classic modern day superhero. Could you highlight any pieces that could give me that look im after. You've given me a generalisation there, could you narrow down some pieces and colours that you think could work? While I realise you're happy with the costume, those pants don't look like barbarian attire to me. They have a zipper down the crotch and a tailored seam across the middle, plus they're skin-tight. To me, these look like the kind of synthetic leather you'd see Angelina Jolie or Kate Beckensale stuffed into to accentuate the shape of their butts, rather than something a barbarian would fashion from the hides of what he kills. The gloves and boots are pretty spot on, I have no complaints about them, but the pants just don't work, I don't think. I would strongly suggest looking for that older pants texture that had large, secondary-colour matches roughly sewn into a hide base lair. I believe those will say "barbarian" a lot better.
Of course, if you're looking for a "modern barbarian" look, i.e. someone who ascribes to the barbarian lifestyle of physical strength, domination and self-sufficiency, but still embraces modern technology to do so, thus representing a mixture of styles, I guess that could work. However, if you ARE going for a mixture of styles, I feel there are better ways to achieve this by giving the modern end of the spectrum greater weight, perhaps with a pair of jeans for the bottom to contrast the muscular, tattooed top.
That said, I really have no complaints about the costume, aside from the colour scheme - you've picked something that's VERY monochromatic. You have a reddish brown for the fur trim (red and green), a yellowish tan (green and red), a red face mask, brown hair (red and green) and all of this over Caucasian skin that's quite reddish, itself. Your entire colour scheme is between red and green, with only slight hints of black and white, which don't really serve to diversify most colour schemes. I feel very strongly that you need a contrasting colour, at least in one specific element somewhere on the costume.
Specifically, you need something in a blue-like hue. It could be a bluish purple, it could be teal, just something of that nature. You can take a cue from Blizzard and give your barbarian blue body and face tattoos, or you can perhaps give him a belt with a blue jewel or some such. Hell, you could probably even use cyan-ish metal instead of the cast iron matte black look.
Of course, that's still your costume, so ultimately, it's your call what you do with it. What matters is that you're happy with the look.
EDIT: So I had a play around with the colours, and this is what I came up with. I'm pretty happy with this now. What do you guys think?

Quote:I like what you said about giving it the tan colour, I'll give that a go and see how it looks. As for the warpaint idea, I was wanting it to be the same colour as the rest of the costume, and was wanting it to be more of a mask rather than paint, just to give him that little "hero" feel. This is going to mark 1 of many times I wish I were at home, and not at work, today.
If you don't like brown, you could try a tan color.
If I'm not entirely retarded, it's on the 'golden' yellow line (like row 3 I think?), either way, the last color in the the line on the right comes off as a tan color, like tanned hide, or something similiar to it. It's not as brown as I'm sure you've tried.
If you were going for something of a true barbarian look that would be a color I'd incorporate in.
Really, any of that far right colors would be subject to being used, because they aren't as bright as many of their counter-colors.
Edit: After looking at your screenie again, I'd, personally, make the mask on his face look like some kind of war paint, either blood ( #3 from the left on the red line to give it a 'dried' appearance) or some other kind of 'berry' or even camo color. -
I was initially looking to use Browns, to make him look like an actual Barbarian, but I just found that Brown just didnt go with the leather pants, or the boots.

Hey guys, seen as how I cant post in the Multi-Media Fan Creations area, I decided to post this here. I'm pretty stuck creating my characters costume, I decided to go for a Barbarian look, I'm pretty set on the pieces I've got now, but I just cant seem to find colours I like. I have black and white at the moment, but it just looks too dull and boring! Do you guys have any suggestions?
-
No I moved the actual NCSoft folder from its original location onto my desktop. Now all of a sudden the screenshots folder that should have been inside it has gone.
-
Hey guys,
I've recently tried to take a few screenshots in game. But when I open my NCSoft file, there's no screenshots folder? I did recently move the file onto my desktop. Could this be the problem?
Cheers. -
I think the definition on Wikipedia answers this question perfectly!
By strict definitions, characters require actual superhuman powers to be deemed superheroes. However, this term has also been applied to costumed crime fighters, characters without super powers, who perform the same functions as superheroes; examples of the latter being Batman and Green Arrow. Broad interpretations of the superhero genre included masked vigilantes, such as The Spirit, who fought crime with their wits, fists and guns rather than superhuman powers, while concealing their identities with only a mask, hat and coat.
In the traditional paradigm, superheroes supplement official law enforcement efforts to fight crime by using their extraordinary abilities to circumvent legal and physical limitations affecting the police. In addition to this basic function, superheroes also confront characters representing their polar opposites, known as supervillains, who employ comparable powers and abilities toward nefarious purposes. -
I've been testing out a lot of different powersets recently and so far the one I like the best is the one I made my first toon with, Super Strength.
Im not quite sure why its my favourite, as I really like playing with powers that aren't close combat, but I just cant seem to detach myself from SS. Maybe because its the powerset I made my first toon with, or maybe its just the cool red animation that I customised my power with. -

I just recently tried to buy a months VIP with my Meastro card via PayPal. I put in all my card details and submitted them. A few seconds later I get "Your order did not pass the risk assessment" and I was returned to the start. Does anybody know what the problem could be? And would I have been charged?
Thanks guys -
Quote:Think its probably a problem with the game, mine's a brand new laptop, only had it for about a month. Hopefully this re-install for the second time should be a permenant fix!Hopefully this doesn't apply to you, but:
I had this same problem at a time where a lot of OTHER issues were plaguing my computer as well - which turned out to be one of my RAM sticks going corrupt. So if your computer is acting like everything that could possibly be going wrong goes wrong at random times, that could be another possibility. Hopefully it's just a problem with the game on your end. -
Its happened to me twice, just re-installing the game as I type this. One guy said that running the game as administrator worked for him, but it didnt for me. Try it, could work for you
-
I've got exactly the same problem! When I click repair it says "This path has been denied". Running as administrator still didnt work. Help would be much appreciated!

Got more than enough info from you there! Thanks a lot

I recently came accross the term "Golden Age Hero". Can anybody tell me what one is please? Got me interested now!

Quote:Okay maybe I did phrase it wrong, I have nothing against the artists, I think their work is brilliant, if only I had £65 to pay for a screensaver! I understand what your saying manno
just....
no..
Let me tell what is wrong here
"I would pay commission, but"
But...but what... you don't use money? You can't count?
What you want to do with the art is not a factor of price in ANY commission cost EVER.
What you are paying for is the artists time, talent, and effort.
Nothing wrong with asking for a freebie
But think about how you phrase it. Some artists live off of commissions, it is their only income. So that's like me going to McDonalds, asking for a burger, and telling them since I'm just going to poop later I don't really see the point in paying for it.
Quote:This was the most difficult picture I've ever done, non-commissioned wise. I put a lot of effort into it, and even signed it. Hope you like it

Hey guys, didnt know where else to post this, so I apologise if its in the wrong place. Seen as how I cant post in the art request topic, this is the only place I figured to post it.
Can anyone create me a basic digital portrait of my character Automate. Not looking for anything special, just something that I can use as a screensaver (I would pay commission, but seen as how its only for use as a screensaver, I didnt see much point)
Here's a few images of him.

Quote:I didnt see this thread as an oppertunity to slag off comic books and "geeky culture" as you put it. If that is your opinion on the matter then keep it to yourself.Oh I am aware of that. I was thinking only of my self obviously. I leached on this thread rather than making a new one with a slight twist.
As for the OP and Total Free Newbs (TFNs), I think they get pleanty of access for never having dropped a dime into the game* I see what forums we/they are allowed to post in and I think it's rather fair and gives them a variety of places to post varying topics/questions. Hell they have access to the main board with all the action. The MAIN BOARD. I can't post in my beloved Comic section, but, any scrub off the street can come like it's some idiotic occupy movement and defecate all over the main board?! Bah! BAH! BAHHHH! I say.
On to the more important thing; Me. I still say the it should be a Tier 8 or so Vet Reward. Lump it on to an existing fluff piece.
*I am aware that many TFNs have dropped a minimal amount on various Store items, minimal compared to a super awesome Vet like myself with a chip on my shoulder because I can't post on a MMO website sub form about comic books and other geeky culture things.
With regards to what you said about paying for the use of the game, why should someone have to pay extra in order to discuss this "geeky culture"? All other MMO's do not limit their forums to just the paying players, including some of the competitiors of COH, DC Universe has forums that can be used by all players, as for Champions Online, I am unsure on.
