A mod might think I had singled someone out, or mentioned a name given those replies. I was essentially agreeing with the article quoted by the original poster, so setting aside the taking of personal offense, that was blowing the post out of proportion.

Quote:To answer the thread title: Yes. Bases are obsolete. It sucks, but that's the truth of the matter. Bases provide no compelling functions to justify going to one. Beyond beautification and storage (which, as others have pointed out, has limited usefulness) purposes, they are entirely useless. The merger of the monorail lines and the Rogue Isle ferries was the final nail in the coffin.
Bases are useless now. It really sucks, too, because having a secret lair is awesome.
They're as good as they're going to get, and for my kids that's pretty awesome, personally the quote is about where I'm at on them. -

There's a reason mmo players are depicted the way they are.
If the bulk of your personal connections can be literally unplugged, you can't be living a fulfilling life with family and friends.
Coh is made up of mostly casual players, but there are some, I'll be away on business come home and they're on, go to a bbq with my family come back and they're on, go on vacation get back and they're on.
And those people who've played for years and still are logging in heavy hours aren't happy fulfilled people, they live in stages of denial about the reason why.
Quote:only seems to happen effectively when we're face to face - when we can see and hear and touch each other. ... When people go online to try to meet their social needs, it's analogous to being a hungry person who eats sugar. They will, in the end, starve."
Me, I play with my boys now and then, so very casual. -
That's terrible news, Positron, War Witch and others are soon to follow this "natural progression" then according to you. And here I was looking for good news.

Quote:no one really wants to play the game, or they aren't playing it the the way I envisioned.
The problem with any game like this is the inevitable "pick me" mentality, where nominations are offered for forumites you're familiar with from a section of the boards (like forum games) or because of omnipresent posting habits, but who's actual contributions to the forums or game might be minimal.
If you set criteria like, got something changed in the actual game via the boards, then the list gets fairly narrow, Tundara got ice melee buffed, Liliaceae got doms buffed, acemace got war mace and fa buffed, etc.
But even at that, if you get right down to it, there's only a list of two, Arcanaville and Zombie_Man, that's it, it's not even "seven", they are the two most important active forumites, period.
Arcana has actual discussions about game design with the developers, which is why she's in every alpha/beta etc, and Zombie works close enough with PS during closed betas writing prolific detailed guides and updating build status, that he's nearly an unpaid GM, and the dev's have said as much.

Sadly dual builds are an extremely underused feature due to the enhancement restriction, I don't know of a single person who's used DB's nor have I ever seen anyone mention it through chat since it was added.
It's truly mind boggling to envision a developer diagramming a system whereby a player would want to start over at zero when they have in some cases billions invested in enhancements they would then have no access to, just so they can try group fly, and the dev self satisfyingly green lighting it.
Only those with access to billions can take full advantage of this "feature", unless a player is interested in going from an optimal build to one filled with generic IO (which would still cost millions) and SO.
And frankly, the fact that all of 4 (four) players have responded to this topic in over a year, illustrates how abysmally unpopular dual builds are, entirely due to the absurdly ridiculous restrictions.

Well, Pilcrow once... oh right.. um, Lady_Athyna has soo many... err, Silverspar ... erm.. Curveball ... DrZeus ... KaliMagdalene ... Ultimus ... Havoc ... TimeLord ... GenericVillain ... Malibu Barbie (rip) ... Friggin_Taser ... Jacobi_Law .....Uh, Um, Err,..
Are we really down to like ten active forum celebs, pretty small list indeed.
Small pond = Big fish, and all that I guess. Heck whengets on the first draft that's a darn small talent pool.

Quote:Just look at all the defeat badges we have. A great many of them you will not get in a reasonable time unless you specifically go after those kinds of mobs/missions. To me, repeating the same in game task (in this case, killing mobs of type x) over and over again while working toward a specified goal is farming. You are farming mobs for a reward you want. Maybe the Devs (and a lot of the community, apparently) just have a different definition of farming than I do. I figure that must be it, because in CoH the term "farming" definitely has a very negative connotation that it just doesn't have in other games I've played.
Don't bring in the Badgers to the topic, in many cases they're card carrying members of the purity police (though admittedly not all).
You see, running even a cannon mission repeatedly to receive a badge, is not the same as the exact identical activity, and even the same mission, to receive the reward of influence.
Because influence is more valuable then a badge.......err, unless you're a badger (as you would be if you're farming badges, wink..) in which case the badge is worth infinitely more then influence...then, um..
Well never mind, it's not the same, move along, end of discussion.
The purity police will have it's eye on you for bringing up such an arrant subject.

Being perma banned on both CoX and CO boards simultaneously while reaching forum cartel on the Euro boards in under three months, is more of a no life category. That is crying out for a twelve step program, not a reward. -
Quote:I haven't seen any MA farm spam outside Atlas Park.
I've seen very little MA farm spam period on servers other than Freedom.
I mean, blame MA farmers in one zone on one server for people not playing your arc if you like, but there's a much more obvious and logical reason they're ignoring it.
The goat digested logic and reason, along with the teachers notepad. -
Quote:
You get rewarded when someone runs and rates your mission. Driving the players out that don't want to run these farm missions means that players that develop non-farm missions won't have their stories ran as often and cuts into the reward they get for their efforts.
Herein lies the rub between the differing opinions on the topic, you're implying that having perhaps many players in AE (which is usually empty on many servers), who may say something in chat (also may not, according to eyewitness feedback in this thread), will lead to driving all good intentioned fun seekers fleeing these buildings like the plague.
Even on Freedom, I believe there are AE's in more then Atlas Park, should a player be crowd-averse.
Donald Trump will tell you that "there's no such thing as bad publicity", whether players are going to reward your arc is up to you, and wishing that the hundreds of thousands of mostly bad, mostly sloppy, and many farming pcm's, would both stop and disappear, is, not even wishful thinking. It's unsoundness of mind sufficient to incapacitate one for civil transactions.
Anyway, I19 will drop tomorrow and this feud will be relived another day, yawn. See you next round.

Heraclea
Acemace
Sailboat
I'll comment on these since I see some familiar names:
Heraclea - always in the tanker section offering sound advice.
Acemace - man got two power sets buffed nuff said.
Sailboat - also helpful in the tanker area, though kind of pissy sometimes.
Golden Ace - the eternal jester, though drops a thousand spots on my list for seconding princess spams a lot. Posting 30 times a day endlessly takes no skill, just no life. -

Quote:BI's right on the money with this one.
There are plenty of sanctimonious types around here who'd love nothing more than seeing anyone who doesn't play 'the right way' (defined as THEIR way) get the axe.Quote:I define "right way" as not exploiting hacks.
Now if your view is that people who openly mock the game rules are just "playing a diffrent way"?
The same righteous arguments were made for everything that could be classified as a farm for seven years now, when you could herd a map of wolves into a dumpster you were a dirty cheat mocking the game rules even though you were using the games own mechanics.
BI is in fact quite accurate in her assessment.
Personally I missed a lot of the farms through the years, but the recent one I was able to top off some old characters and I had more fun then I've had in the past two years, of which I've almost never logged on, I was on as much as I could last week.

Quote:Content Police are people like those in here salivating at the thought of mass bannings for anyone who does not use AE as they think it should be used.Quote:But this quote of yours is a bit of a misrepresentation of the side opposite your argument.
Then you're green to these boards 09 because BI hit the nail on the head.
This has gone on for many years, with each new "farm" or cries of PL abuse comes the purity police imploring that ban hammers rain down and eliminate all the vile scum.
As implied in my earlier post, if put in their hands these bastions of (leveling) honesty would review the data of recent AE use and remove a portion of the subscriber base sizable enough to make the game insolvent.
Sharp crowd, right..

Quote:mass banning everybody that took part in this exploit will just serve to piss off a lot of people. That is not a good thing for CoH. A small to medium sized MMO like this isn't in a position to piss off potentially thousands of people to teach them a lesson about power leveling.
Perhaps they could hold off on the mass bannings until, say, March 31 2011, and they could give it an event name like, the exodus.
Just saying, I'm currently a lvl9 something, over in another something that's shiny and going to be something on March 31.
Maybe the purity police can get rid of all their undesirable fellow gamers in one shot.
A girl can dream. -
Quote:Content Police are people like those in here salivating at the thought of mass bannings for anyone who does not use AE as they think it should be used.
In a perfect world all of those types in this thread would be put in charge of doling out permanent bans to everyone at their discretion who's recently used the AE in a malicious manner.
Followed some days later by the startling gaming news that the highly touted CoH is closing it's doors, all 42 remaining players were sad.

Quote:Actually, he just made it clear that extreme abuse of the AE would be punished - he's not really the sort to go beserk
How many formal letters released by the lead developer referring to punishment for vaguely outlined parameters of "game abuse" have we had......................oh, right. Only one.
(actually, it's berserk)
Quote:That may have been his intent. But a lot of people(if not most) perceived it as a pissed off rant. And how it is perceived is the only thing that matters. His intent isn't relevant in the least bit.
It's common knowledge, unless you know, you live within your own reality.
