There's definitely issues with his experiment, the IRB at his university is currently investigating it.

Where did you get this information?
[/ QUOTE ]the head of their IRB
[/ QUOTE ]
I would love this to be true ... but you know him? or did he make a public statement? Most people will want to verify this
[/ QUOTE ]He said it in his reply to a message i sent to him regarding the ethics of this experiment. He didn't say anymore because he cannot comment at this time.

Anyone know the right people at his university to go after for an ethics claim. I was fifteen when he "gauged my reactions." It did no mental damage i'm aware of, but i'm mad as heck that this guy harassed me "for science."

I don't think there's any validity in his "it's legal" argument. Those drones are there for player protection. What he's doing is one step away from an exploit as far as i'm concerned. Not to mention, being a jerk just isn't cool.
[/ QUOTE ]
Even with all the positive descriptions from the author of the article, what the dear professor did was isolate and underline the fact that any sociopath, even a functioning one, tends to be abhorred by the community around them. And that's pretty much what he was/is, at least as Twixt. What's the difference between an armed robber shooting a housewife and a police officer who's had to kill in the line of duty? At the instant of the taboo action, one is justified by social acceptance - the other is in every violation of it. Both take a life, both violate the social abhorrance of intentional murder. One, however, does so for the protection of the community around them, while the other does so for personal gain. One is approved of as a guardian of his family, friends, and neighbors; the other is reviled for being a criminal.
Two families just lost someone though. And there's plenty of evidence that shows that those families often don't care if one of those people was following the rules or not - it still hurts. Point here is that following the rules, like Professor Myers, and claiming to not understand why people hated his actions despite "not doing anything wrong" is a failure on his part to understand humanity as a whole. The response to Twixt is nothing to despair over - I'd actually say it indicates something to be hopeful about, that even in a digital medium, we as people still insist on custom and "the Golden Rule" even when it's not enforced by authorities. That's a good sign, I'd say. I'd instead despair for his kids growing experience... I don't know that Dad's going to prepare them so well for team sports, to say the least... Anyway, just my $.02
Oh, and hi again

after reading this, i think this would be a legitimate research endeavor if one more factor had been taken into account, ethics. This isn't a game with real heroes trying to take down real villains, it's a game with people trying to have fun.

ah...the wonders of language do it again!
Yeah I quickly learned not to use my british description for "a packet of cigarettes" while in Canada...got me some odd stares.
The term actually comes from the ye olde british meaning for a bundle of sticks which is also a rude slur word on homosexuals nowadays.

You know after going through this, I see why power customization was put off for so long, some powers just wouldn't seem right being another color... Pain Domination Blue? Dark Miasma Green? Hot Feet Pink?
[/ QUOTE ]Dunno bout the rest, but i think if you ignore dark's name, it has a LOT of potential for customization to fit different themes -
[ QUOTE ]
If someone can make hot pink fire armor buffs and green ice armor that last a couple minutes of duration, what's unreasonable about asking for the option to click and switch off those buffs you receive from other players.
[/ QUOTE ]Don't diss the University of North Dakota!
In all seriousness, i don't think this will be a huge problem for most. This game is already full of colorful buffs, so it shouldn't be too bad -

I have a sneaky suspicion that "Power Customization" is goign to end up a jazzed up version of "Costume Change Emotes."
Open the power Info Tab, select one of 3 or 4 preset "emotes" and then that emote replaces the power animation up to the point where it "fires."
[/ QUOTE ]
This is more than I'm hoping for (this is what I expect, at best, from COs "Full Power Customization"). Being able to choose from a selected list of animations for each power would be amazing, and unlikely. I don't think Champions is going to be able to pull it off despite the promises (at least, not at launch, even in September).
My only expectation of Power Customization here is the ability to change the colors of the powers. (This is is also what I expect, at worst, from CO's Power Customization).
[/ QUOTE ]
All I really want from any power customization is the ability to make it any color I choose. I don't mind the animations and I don't need to be able to make fire shoot from my forhead or the middle of my back, but I would like to make my energy blast red, or purple, or white or tie die or something.
[/ QUOTE ]
For the sake of this discussion I believe it has already been confirmed during the "press open betas" of CO that they have player selectable "emanation points" for powers working. As I understand it you are limited to several specific body points to choose from (i.e. you could have a power blast come from your hands, your chest or your eyes only) but still this is more control over customization than -just- the color of your beams, which CO will definitely have as well.
Having powers in CoX behave like the Prestige Sprints (where in that case you have a set of separate powers with different animations all effectively providing the same in-game effect) has long been offered as a suggestion for a "poor man's" version of Power Customization. Now that we have the Costume Change Emotes the code that makes those work might be applicable to this idea as well.
While I'd have to concede that may be what we end up with it would be, at best, a weak solution to the problem at hand. A sort of "multiple choice / hardwired animation" customization would be far less flexible a scheme than what other games will soon be offering in this area.
I'm not assuming (just yet) that Power Customization is a foregone conclusion in this game. But I will say that if it does happen -and- turns out to be like our Prestige Sprints / Costume Change Emotes then I might go so far as to declare it "too little, too late".
[/ QUOTE ]from what i've heard, for this to be implemented as PC, it would be only slightly easier than actual Power Customization -
don't know what you're doing, but i've run a couple pre-veat and we've had anywhere from an insane time at it to no trouble at all

hey guys, don't want to be pushy, but it looks like my arc's been skipped twice now (my most recent post was a repost with a rating for a different arc) so i would appreciate it if someone could give it a try. That being said, if you don't want to play it, that's your choice, I just don't want it to be forgotten again.

Just tried to run this and it won't let me start. It is doing that "Let's me click play, then click accept, but doesn't turn the holo-guy into the contact and it won't start" thing. Do you have a map in there that they took out recently?
[/ QUOTE ] don't think so, but i'll check
edit: the map was indeed a problem and has been fixed -

Arc Name: Assault on Aru Prime
Arc ID: 173115
Faction: Villainous (Cold-hearted bastage style evil, nothing campy about this)
Creator Global/Forum Name: @Aisynia
Difficulty Level: Moderate to hard, depending on difficulty. All enemies are custom. Several bosses and EBs, but no AVs. These will get downgraded to LTs and Bosses on minimum difficulty.
Synopsis: [SMFA SCMA MWMA] Aru Prime is a neutral world, but it has something the Earth Federation needs to win the war against the Azeri Alliance (which they invaded). Your mission: Take it by any means necessary.
[/ QUOTE ]
Mission 1: ***** I can tell this is giong to be a bit story heavy already, but it's good. The custom enemies were simple, but enjoyable. The mission was a big easy, but still good.
Mission 2: **** I'm liking how this is starting to really get evil, but it's not too evil. The mission was a bit longer, and also a bit more of a challenge, but overall i enjoyed it.
Mission 3: *** I think this map fit really well with the story. That being said, the map was way too big and i spent forever trying to find the glowies. Otherwise still good.
Mission 4: **** I like this mission. It was pretty good, but there wasn't a whole lot of depth to it.
Mission 5: ***** This mission is challenging and creative. It very much has the feel of an epic last stand. It was a little too tough for my tastes. The creative use of enemies and objects made up for this.
overall: *****. It was enjoyable and villainous, but it had its flaws. The last mission really made it though and brought this up to a 5
[/ QUOTE ]
Thanks a ton
What was your opinion of the evil factor from mission 3 and up? That's really when it is intended to kick in or sink in, the sheer magnitude of what you're single handedly enabling.
And the mission 3 map.. yeah too big for my tastes as well... but it's the smallest available. Maybe I should PM a dev and bug them to add a smaller version of this map type?I'd totally switch to it.
[/ QUOTE ]
yeah, was definitely feeling it...the urgency of it was a bit overpowering when compared to the evil though

Here's my arc. It's nature is an odd one. It starts off serious and degrades into comedy towards the end. This is intended.

ArcID: 135096
ArcName: Superhero Downtime
Author: @Saunik
Length: Very Long (5 missions)
Alignment: Heroic
Faction: Custom, Council
Recommended level: This one's runs the full gamut from 1-50.
Synopsis: All you wanted was a little quiet time to catch up on your favorite TV show... Is a little relaxation too much to ask?

Mission 1: **** Off to a pretty good start. I'm liking the story so far. The map was nice and straightforward and the enemies weren't bad.
Mission 2: ***1/2 Had a bit of a funny happening at the mission intro text. I ran the missions on my pig toon and funny enough the contact said "Sorry to piggyback on your storage buffer". Enjoyed that coincidence. The map really didn't work for me. Also, having to look for the signal jammer on this map was a pain.
Mission 3: ***** I liked the map so much better this time around. I'm liking the occasional custom group to mix it up from the normal council
Mission 4: ***1/2 Plot's losin a little of its depth, but it's still good. I fail to see how the mission fits in with what the contact was telling me. The mission itself was short, but enjoyable.
Mission 5: ****Story seems back on track here. The map is a bit long for my tastes. I'm enjoying the challenge, and it's definitely proven to be one
**** all in all, not the best arc, but an enjoyable one.
