If at any point you reasonably believe that you, yourself are in danger of anything that justifies lethal force in self defense (kidnapping, murder, ****, serious bodily injury) you're free to use lethal force in self defense. If you have kids in the home and are afraid that THEY might be similarly at risk or be unable to flee, the same goes.

Compare that to Texas where homeowners are able to justify lethal force against property damage. One very public case had a man justified in shooting teens that were "decorating" his house with rolls of toilet paper.
If Batman lived in Texas, I think a grand jury would "no bill" (not indict) him. In Texas, citizens can carry licenses to carry concealed firearms, and there have been incidents where citizens have used deadly force to protect others from criminal activity and they generally are not indicted.
  2. The Martians in War of the Worlds were pretty dumb for not testing air and water first for pathogens.

They're not as dumb as as the aliens in Signs though.
  3. Is this the one with pictures of space-octopuses on signs?
  4. I still think it was just some overworked and stressed out community service manager who thought he could use RealID as a tool to keep the forum trolls in line. It's a crappy job and it's not the first time one of them has lost it. WOW's forums get more traffic than human beings can handle and moderating them is as fruitless as stopping a tidal wave with a bucket.

From the start, RealID was supposed to be an optional feature for the Battle.net and never intended as a forum policing tool. I don't really think Blizzard is an evil company. I think some guy over there made a major boneheaded decision and I serously doubt they'll repeat it.

They merely backed off on using RealID on the forums. They're still going full speed ahead with RealID and their Facebook integration. They're still going to be using players' information there.

According to an interview with the Battle.net project director a couple months ago, he said participating in RealID would be an optional feature. It sounds like some genius decided to expand it beyond it's original purpose of interfacing with social network sites and twist it into a mandatory tool for policing the WoW forums. I don't think that was the original intent at all. From the interview:

    Quote:
Q: Do you expect any push back from diehard Blizzard fans from the Facebook features?

A: We don't anticipate any. We are going to be very clear and upfront with the user. Once they log in and create a Battle.net account for the first time, if they choose to participate in Real ID, it is of course, an optional set of features that you don't have to participate in. Beyond that we are going to notify them upfront their names could be used to populate via Facebook and how their names could be used via this Facebook feature.

The real reason? Apparently Vivendi has inked a deal with Facebook to "cross-pollinate" Battle.net with FB, supposedly to attract new subscribers by exposing player accomplishments and armory drops.

So this is essentially a money grab. Players have been reduced to marketing data, to be sold to whoever wants to pay.
STO asked its playerbase about linking with social networking sites and the players firmly replied "not interested".

I wonder if there's much overlap between MMO players and social networking site users. Most people I know do one or the other but not both.

Cool site! I discovered I had $500 in unclaimed property.

Exactly what I was thinking. It will be like the MMO equivalent of road rage. When I first read about this I thought it was a hoax.
  10. All background shield designs (chief, tierce, per pale, etc) are still missing from the costumes of all characters with Shield Defense. Both scrappers and brutes, both male and female characters.
  11. There seems to be a large number of missing costume pieces. They can't be accessed in either character generation or the tailor. They were reported in the I17 test but it went live without being fixed.

    Respec

Sometimes people post they will respec into a different primary or secondary power set. Can you actually do that now without making a new character? I've been away for a little while so I didn't know if they added something new.

  14. As for the running animation:

Go and watch any Akira Kurosawa movie. When Japanese swordsmen ran, if their weapons were tucked in their sashes, they held on to them as they ran, presumably so they don't flop around and fly out of their sashes. If their weapon was drawn, it was also held steady, presumably because swinging a weapon while running could be dangerous, especially in a troop formation. Also it keeps your sword at a ready position.

You can see large formations of hundreds of samurai running without moving their arms in the movie Ran, and in just about any other classic live action medieval Japanese movie. It's very odd and unnatural-looking since their arms aren't swinging as you normally do when running, but there's probably some historical authenticity behind it. The ninja run animation is just a variation of the same thing.
  15. To me there are 3 kinds of players: casual, regular, and hardcore.

To me a casual player is one that just has a passing interest in the game and could just as easily be playing another game or watching tv.

There are many players who play on a regular basis but don't rise to the dedication or playstyle to be considered truely hardcore. I call them regular players.
  16. If your character is widely travelled through time and dimensions, it's conceivable you've simply picked up different armors in your travels and have different outfits from or for different times and places. When in Rome, do as the Romans do, etc.

But not every character needs many costumes. If my character is a mutant, I might only have one specific look, but if my backstory and powers aren't based on my appearance or outfit, then I might change costumes all the time simply as a whim.

    What demon/?

The demons could have several damage types assuming they're modelled after existing ones.

Hordling: lethal bite, smashing tongue lash
Hordling Bezerkers & Hurlers: frost melee & ranged

    Wailers: ranged smash/energy, melee lethal

    Behemoths: fire melee & ranged
Behemoth Overlords: fire melee & ranged

    Hellfrost: frost melee & ranged

Spectral Daemon: dark melee & ranged
Spectral Daemon Lord: dark melee & ranged

Nerva Spectral Daemon: frost melee & ranged
Nerva Spectral Daemon Lord: frost melee & ranged

Succubus: confuse, hold, negative energy melee & ranged

I think succubus would make an awesome boss pet. Confuse? Yes, please!

My best guess is we'll likely see hordling minions, behemoth Lt's, and a succubus boss. What I'd rather have is behemoth minions, hellfrost Lt's and a succubus boss.

Behemoth Overlords would be cool but they're so dang big. If they could make them man-sized, then behemoth minions, behemoth overlord Lt's, and a succubus boss would be nice.

Although wailers would be useful, I'm not a big fan of them because they're rather goofy looking. I'm not sure if "daemons" are actually true "demons", they're likely just really mean ghosts.

What about a 'binding circle' type power. Puts a circle on the floor, inside which your demons get buffed in some way. Pretty powerful buff but... none of your demons can enter or exit the circle once it is established (until it times out or you dismiss it). So, you have to use it at the right times and make sure that your demons are positioned correctly.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Thematically appropriate, but mechanically it would not be very usesful as you could only use it for one encounter and you're assuming demons all have good ranged attacks. I'm thinking just have a big buff.

The thing about academia is that you can find evidence to support and theory you feel like purporting.

It's funny you should mention that. He happened to write a paper with the Orwellian premise that Bad is Good., that cheating, exploits, and griefing is equivalent to good, proper, and socially acceptable play.

    Regarding Twixt

This is still a game and there is a player code of conduct and a EULA. There are still norms of decent behavior even in PvP games where players are trying to virtually kill each other.

He never seemed to have been suspended or banned by the GMs so what does that tell you about your point?

You don't have to take my word for it, he acknowledges it himself here: What's good about bad play?

    Regarding Twixt

You can do PvP without harassing players, you can harass players outside of PvP. The two are not synonymous.

Prof. Myers was not engaging in PvP. He wasn't trying to win scenarios. Being in a PvP zone does not give you carte blanch for any kind of behavior. This is still a game and there is a player code of conduct and a EULA. There are still norms of decent behavior even in PvP games where players are trying to virtually kill each other. Prof Myers' research was about examining the borders of acceptable behavior and seeing what lay beyond - and to that end he was trying to inflict emotional distress on players and it appears he went to great lengths to achieve those ends.

It's not gaming, it's griefing. It's not proper research, it's an ethical breach.

    Regarding Twixt

I find it odious that a professor would use unwitting players in a MMO as guinea pigs and systematically pursue them and repeatedly use a game defect for the purpose of intentionally inflicting emotional distress in players in order to gague their reactions for his "research". This goes way beyond random griefing, this is Nazi science.

    Gravity (Again)

I really want to play gravity but I'm just not hardcore enough to play a dominator that has such limited control powers. I'd really like to see an overhaul of this set.

One immediate advantage I can see is you can take Teleport and Hover together for the same amount of powers as Hover/Fly used to take.

Great idea! I'm going to do this!
