  1. "Patriotism is the willingness to kill and be killed for trivial reasons" - Bertrand Russell

That quote pretty much sums up my, and by extension, my heroes' views on the subject. To fight for humanity, to fight to protect the world, or to make it a better place, that is worthy. To fight for a country? To fight for an arbitrary set of borders? That is not worthy of a hero. That's not to say they feel no pride or such in their nation, but that there are such greater things out there that patriotism is a trivial and outdated concept.

    The Dead Pool

My guess is Sis, purely cos the whole mind riding thing makes it easy to bring her back...
  3. For the dominator, go Fire/Fire/Fire. It's basically a fire blaster with controls and pets. So much fun when permaed. Survivability comes from being able to stun groups of bosses in a single shot with Flashfire under domination.
  4. I see this kind of thing come up quite often, both here and for other games - that a classless system is better than a class based one. And while it *might* be true in pnp (though even there I'm not convinced), I've played a fair few computer games, both on- and offline without classes, and not one of them has even close to the variety of playstyle that CoX does. Why? One word, balance.

Currently, in CoX, there are...772 combinations of primary and secondary powersets, unless I've screwed up my calculations - likely, but even so, it's not going to be that far out. And overall, they're reasonably well balanced. Not perfectly, but there are few glaring outliers.

If we were to have "free" choice as to powers, then taking any 18 powers (hence matching the number available to primary and secondary, I'm ignoring pools and APPs cos it's complicated), then there would be around 700 powers available (maybe I've slightly overestimated), giving around 1.3x10^51 possible combinations. Thats 13 followed by 50 zeros for those who don't get maths. Or 1.7x10^48 times as many as there are now. Now you have to balance every single one of them. Frankly there's only one way to do so - make all of them effectively the same, with only cosmetic differences.

CoX works, and has such great variety in playstyle, not just between ATs, but within them, especially with support ATs, because it can balance on a powerset level, rather than a power level. Super Strength can have a seemingly overpowered ability in the form of Footstomp because it has no other AoE. If you could take Footstomp, Fire Sword Circle and Lightning Rod in the same build, then they'd have to be much weaker, else the character would be stupidly overpowered, thus removing what makes Footstomp interesting. Force Field defenders can softcap a team's defense because they can't heal what little damage that gets through. Let them take heals, even weaker ones, and you've again broken the balance. Thus FF powers would be weakened. Every unique or standout power would have to be normalised, hence destroying variety even as you try to create it.

    tldr: /unsigned
  5. I will go against the grain and say: don't do a Dark/Dark defender (or corruptor). I'm a big fan of both sets, but they just don't go well together. Dark blast's strength is in the form of control, debuffs and healing as opposed to raw damage, yet dark miasma provides all of those three things in far greater amounts - sufficient to cover all a corruptor's needs, let alone a defender's - leaving DB wasted. If you want Dark Miasma, put it with something like Fire, Ice, Archery or Radiation (the first and last can easily be recoloured to look like darkness if necessary), while Dark Blast goes best with a set like Storm, Ice or maybe Traps.
  6. Well, I've found one more new series that seems worth watching: Yuru-Yuri. I wasn't really expecting much, as it's one of those "girls do nothing at a school club" animes (which I tend to hate), but this one keeps it amusing with a demented sense of humour, a dash of fourth wall breaking and some rampant lesbian fantasies (think Maria†Holic....).

Also, Mawaru Penguindrum still makes no sense but I'm loving it
  7. Based on first impressions, the new season looks pretty poor. Mawaru Penguindrum was so bizzare and non-sensical, I have to see where the hell it's going, but other than that, I don't think there's anything I'm gonna bother with (though I haven't seen Usagi Drop so if it really is that good, I might try it). Most of the stuff seems to be "comedy" about lolis...

Actually, just remember, there is one other: Nyanpire - a series of five minute shorts about a vampire cat. Need I say more

I don't know anything about Foxbat, but Flambeaux is meant to be useless. Sure, she'll never conquer the world, but she's still a decently written character
  9. Another vote for Sephiroth. OK, he's not the worst villain ever, as many of the stupid one or two appearance gimmick bad guys from comics described here are indeed worse, but for the central villain from a major game/film/book etc, I can't think of a more poorly developed or implemented character.

His motivation seemed to be "I want to destroy the world cos I'm emo", his actions were pretty much non-existent as people have already said - the one thing he actually did (Aeris) was shoddily presented, shoehorned in to try to make us hate a zero-dimensional character and didn't even make sense cos I resurrect people who have taken far worse every battle - and he only gets the popularity cos he's a bishie with a sword. What sums it up for me is that when I get to the end of the game, I didn't care one bit about defeating him. Sure I wanted to save the world and all that, but the fact it was Sephiroth I was fighting to do so was irrelevant. This isn't a lack of technology or whatever. It's just flat out bad writing.

While I would love a spear set, I would be really disappointed if it was two handed. Spears were predominantly one handed weapons, used with a shield. Ideally, the spear would be used in an ancient Greek style overhand manner, but even an underarm fashion would be good as long as it's not two handed

It's a comic book game. It's meant to be ridiculous

You ever seen an Elec/Elec stalker in action?

No they don't. A stalker that stops to hide is a bad stalker. After AS they should be whacking away like any other meleer. TW would work fine.

    Durarara!!

I wasn't that keen on Durarara!! early on, in fact I wouldn't have watched beyond the first 3-4 episodes were it not what my uni anime society was showing. However, I'd suggest you persevere with it, as it gets much much better later on.

Heh, I've got the same issue with a brute I'm planning. Was going to go for WM or SS, but TW would be perfect, so I'm having to wait...

Also, I really hope there's a massive axe in there

While this is true, in practice it can effectively be ignored due to the way it works - you will always increase your damage by the amount the debuff says.
  18. Nichijou - As the English title - Ordinary Life - suggests, this is a slice of life show, featuring the everyday adventures of a gorup of schoolgirls. And a 8 year old scientific genius. And a talking cat. And a robot girl with a giant key in her back that may or may not have something to do with her rocket propelled toe. And a boy who rides to school on a goat. And a...well, just watch it and see. It's brilliant.

Seconded. For pure unadulterated fun, nothing beats my Fire^3 Dom.
  20. Panty and Stocking OVA - God. My. Oh.

Some find it slow and lacking action, and while it's true, watching said characters grow is well worth the entire 13 episodes. That and probably one of the meaniest and funniest pranks a father can play his young daughter. (Just thinking about it makes me laugh...)
Think I recommended this before, but if not, then definitely a +1. Same goes for the sequel, Banner of the Stars.

Haven't finished anything recently, but there's a few things I'm watching that are promising:

C - The Money of Soul and Possibility Control - Finance is awesome! Though of course, this being Japan, instead of trading stocks and so forth, people have fights with summoned beings to make money. Pretty interesting plot so far and the action scenes are good. Reminds me in some ways of Eden of the East, not so much the story, but the overall feel of the show.

Hidan No Aria - Basically Toradora! with guns and even less of anything resembling sense. Really stupid, but fun. And Rie Kugimiya is as awesome as ever.

Umineko No Naku Koro Ni - The dying patriarch of a wealthy family summons his scions to his island mansion, supposedly to discuss the inheritance. The results are...well, pretty much what you'd guess from the title, as this is indeed, the psuedo-sequel (different characters, different setting, same themes) to Higurashi
  22. Madoka has (finally) ended. All I can say is something along the lines of "HOLY **** THAT WAS AMAZING!!!!". Watch it. Even if magical girls and cuteness normally would put you off, give it three episodes to change your mind....
  23. I know it's way too late for the OP, but if anyone wants more good villain music, Two Steps From Hell would be worth checking out. A lot of their best stuff tends more towards the "heroic" side of epic music, but there's some suitably darker pieces like:

  24. The only RPG I'm currently involved in is a Dark Heresy (WH40K RP) campaign at my uni games society. 'Tis fun. I'd love to do more, but I've not the time.
