Quote:Logging in to your computer with a restricted user account is fine, however, there is absolutely no need from a security standpoint to run the game as that restricted user ... that is, you can be on the restricted user account but still run the game as an administrator - the only thing that will have administrator privileges is the game's processes. I'm not sure exactly what you believe you're protecting yourself against by not running the game as an administrator.Well, I think it's a bug with a suggestion on how to solve the problem. I also thought other people might have similar issues so I thought I'd post it where they would find it. I don't think someone looking for a solution to a problem would go to the suggestions board...
By virtue of the fact that you are running the game in a manner in which it was not intended to run, there really is no bug. Your ideas on how to make it work the way you want it to are, therefore, much more appropriate to the suggestions forum.

Let me also clarify something ... you moved your wife's wireless network card into your old machine so your wife could use that machine... then you installed the Windows 7 on the machine into which you had just moved the wireless network card?
When you say the adapter seems to be working fine, what criteria are you using to determine this? Is the card showing up in the hardware list, and is it showing the adapter in the network connections control panel?
Is it possible that the card was damaged in the move - i.e., took a tiny electrical jolt and shorted something out?
Maybe it wouldn't hurt to post a CoH Helper log?
Otherwise, it's pretty strange - my understanding (not experience - don't have Win 7 yet) is that hardware-wise Win 7 and Vista are pretty much the same...

Quote:Yep, I'm going to ... I want to see how the new nvidia offerings are received and how they test out - even though I will be unlikely to buy one of the new ones, what nvidia does may influence me either toward or away from ati at this point.I'd wait until the dust settles a little bit first, since a new brass ring does tend to affect the pricing of mid-range and value cards.
Quote:Not trying to kiss up to them, but seriously, pay attention to BillZBubba and FatherXMas' posts over the next month in this tech forum, and you will learn all you need to about CoH and the new cards. Their past advice helped me build capable CoH running PC's as well.
Thanks again, everybody! I will just have to wait and see how everything shakes out - Ultra Mode, the new nvidia cards ... all of it. Maybe I'll have more money by then!

Quote:Yeah ... that's kinda what I was thinking. I don't believe any bridges have been burned.Take it for what you will. While the ATI logo has been plastered all over many of the webpages and several of the prizes at HeroCon were ATI cards, there was also a heavy nVidia representation with their 3d vision or whatever they are calling it.
Quote:Since we know GR won't launch until July, I'd wait until I17 hits open beta (or if you are lucky and get into the closed beta) and check the reports from various people using different cards and configurations, then make the decision.
Thanks.

Thanks, Father Xmas ... that helps me compare my card to the ATI side so I can be sure I'm really UPgrading if I decide to go that way.
This page has the specs on my current card. Core clock is 675mHz.

Quote:Well, I was kinda inviting speculation ... I've seen some posts indicating that the 9800's would do UM, but I thought I remembered the initial post from Posi indicating that they would do the bare minimum, which, to me, isn't REALLY "doing" UM... but maybe I'm just being picky.I'm having pretty good results with my 5770, and Posi said they were getting surprising results from it in Ultra Mode as well. But until Ultra Mode is open to the public, not many people can offer advice on how the cards will handle. Only the devs and closed beta people know at this point. Sadly.

As you say, Bill Z, it's been this way for quite a while ... I've learned to ignore logos on pages, as they often only mean someone ponied up some $$ to have their logo placed there. For a long time, the nvidia logo was on the game intro screens, yet the devs, as I recall, indicated that they were still trying to work with ATI... sometimes my memory isn't what it used to be, so I could be wrong about that.
Have the devs made any kind of statement that nvidia is out and AMD/ATI is in?

I was not under the impression that AMD and NCSoft/Paragon Studios were going to be partnering exclusively, just that they were working together more than they used to. Is this posted somewhere? Just curious...

Quote:If you're running any version of Windows, depending on the amount of RAM you have installed: Windows uses hard drive space to supplement RAM (pagefile - basically virtual memory). The less RAM you have, the more likely it is that your system will need to use the hard drive to store files that would normally be loaded to RAM. While using the pagefle is not as fast as using RAM, and will therefore slow down memory hungry applications, it gets even more complicated if you don't have enough space available so that your pagefile can dynamically expand as needed. The less space you have available for the pagefile, the slower your applications will run, as there will be a lot of reading from and writing to the hard drive. Why? I've run for years with only a few percent of the hard drive free.
If you run Windows on a 64 bit system with 8-16GB of RAM, this might not be an issue for you ... but if you are running Windows with 1-2 GB of RAM or less, you might find that you see performance improvement when running memory intensive applications if you have more HDD space available for pagefile expansion.

With Ultra Mode on the horizon, I'm curious as to where my current card fits ... I know I'm not getting bells and whistles, but I was wondering if anyone has any theories as to how well this one will do with any of the UM options:
ZOTAC ZT-98XES2P-FSP GeForce 9800 GTX(G92) 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card
Also, I'd like to know what ATI models would be comparable to this, just out of curiosity. Years ago, I was a solid ATI fan, but as time went on, I found my ATI video cards became less useful as more games worked better with the nvidia cards. A few years ago, I switched, and haven't looked back until recently reading all these threads about the newer ATI cards and how good they are, and also considering the controversy surrounding the newer nvidia cards. As it stands now, I certainly can't see spending $350 on a nvidia card that is about to become obsolete, or at least "old hat". The cheapest GTX 285 - also a ZOTAC - is $354.99 on Newegg - and I can't see going for the 260 for what I believe will be only a minor increase in performance, based on what I've read here and other places.
I would consider going back to ATI if all the issues with CoX have been solved with the introduction of UM.
Not in a hurry - I'm quite satisfied with the performance of my current card overall, but I AM a little bit of a geek and do like to upgrade when I can afford to. BTW, I have a Q6600 with 8 GB DDR2 to go along with my video card. I built this machine in July 2008, so I do plan to upgrade the entire system by mid 2011 or so, but money is always a factor there.
Any thoughts?

One thing I can point out: I got into the DP closed beta - I only got my 48 month vet badge at the end of January... so, even if it did not include everyone that was part of the Loyalty program, it must have included some of us. If not everyone in the Loyalty program got into DP closed beta, maybe they are going to get into the DS closed beta ... but that is PURELY PERSONAL SPECULATION.

Quote:I think it might be helpful to post a CoHHelper report and a HijackThis log. That'll give us more info on your system so we can try to help.A few months ago, I got a new laptop. My old laptop ran the game pretty well, but this new laptop, had Vista, now has Win7, the environments show up fine but all characters, NPCs and other players, show up brighter than normal, effects like lightning and fire auras don't show properly, the home screen looks brighter than normal, and internal environments like caves give off a flicker, like the ground and walls flicker sometimes when I move. Anyway of fixing this? If other info is needed I can provide.

doc, I think it might be helpful to indicate what browser (and version) you are using and maybe a CoHHelper report and a HijackThis log. That information may assist us in determining what the problem is.

Quote:I see this kind of post a lot on forums. This is a player forum. Devs and other rednames can post here, but answers from other players are what you're going to get. Unfortunately, that will not give you the answers you want (as opposed to the answers you've already gotten - many of them quite good). People who have been here for a long time and seen many new issues have given you the answer. The devs are not going to tell you who will be in this closed beta nor are they going to tell you how long each "wave" is going to last.I keep shooting for a miracle here in the asking, but, regardless of all these wild speculations and damning opinionated mumbo-jumbo, the topic at hand is still:
This --> Seeking developer confirmation (one way or another)OR a link to a quote from a developer concerning the current incarnation of the closed beta and the specifics of who will be participating in said incarnation of the current closed beta. A time-frame would also be helpful (e.g. if there are stages such as: In House> Devs and Family> Vets> etc.)
Not This--> What you think about the closed beta. (Speculation)
Not This--> Who you think will or wont be in said closed beta. (Wild Speculation)
Not This--> Intimations that other people need to "calm down" because they're not in the beta. (Inflammatory)
Please, help this stay on topic. Thank you.
For the most part, people HAVE been keeping this thread on topic... The topic is "Access to Ultramode Closed Beta".
If you want a ONLY redname answer, send a PM to a redname. Post on the forums, and you're going to get player answers.

Quote:Nobody is "forced" to use transfers at all, regardless of where they are going to, and whether free or "for pay". That said, most other MMO's do, in fact, use the incentive of a free transfer to balance server populations - i.e., they offer free transfers only to a limited number of new or lower-population servers. That's business. The idea that people should be "forced" to use free transfers to lower population servers does not work at all.
Quote:You theorize the purpose of free server transfer is to reduce the bandwidth on high population servers by giving people a chance to go to low population servers that do not suffer as much lag...I doubt that's the purpose of free server transfers.
I think that the purpose of free server transfers was exactly what was stated when they offered them: an opportunity for us to visit other servers or transfer permanently somewhere else we wanted to go for whatever reasons we had for going there.
Quote:My theory on why they offer free server transfers is so that those individuals who have access to computers & internet connections that allow them to handle the higher populations, can switch from the low population server they started on to the higher population server that offers them this MMO feature: greater interaction.
Quote:Nothing wrong with offering people incentives to transfer to lower population servers. I wouldn't make the transfer myself. My computer & internet connection can handle Freedumb's higher population tyvm.
Quote:Most definately something wrong with forcing the community to use free transfers only to move to lower population servers.
Quote:Freedumb is the only server I've made characters on.
Quote:Oh, for those of you who prefer solo here's a thought:
how about setting your default keybindings so that with the push of a key your new alt will instantly become hidden to searches.
That way the only time anyone will bother you is if they right-click on your name and attempt to engage you.
Then again you can remain absolutely mute to the entire community by altering your chat boxes so you do not see any broadcasts, private messages or any other type of communication so you do not have to deal with anyone.
So I ask you "solo" players: why not have your cake and eat it too?
I also understand why some people would rather play in a crowded gameplay environment - it's just not my personal preference. In most of the games I play, my personal real life friends have influenced my choice of game servers/shards/realms. As it happens, they apparently often prefer mid- to low- population gameplay as well.
It takes all kinds, y'know?

Quote:True - and, even though some of the problems are not fixed, the game is upgraded on a regular basis... so they are meeting their requirements plus. While that is techniqually true you'd be crazy to think anyone would actually pay a monthly subscription to a game that isn't upgraded on a some what normal basis.
Overall, I'd have to say that the CoX players and Devs have a much better relationship than some other games I play. The Devs talk to us, and take our complaints and bug reports and discussions fairly seriously. Many other games - not so much. For one of the games I play, the "joke" is: no matter what the problem - no matter how widespread - no matter how clearly it's server-side issues ... it's your ram.
My feeling is that if it were easy to fix these things that have plagued some of us, they'd have fixed them.
Also, how many different players do the ITF? Is it a majority of the player-base? My guess is that it is not. That, combined with the fact that the TF mission in question is playable, even if it's not ideal, says to me that it might be prioritized a bit lower than some other issues that affect more people more of the time. Triage for programming bugs tends to be: if it breaks something critical, it gets priority over other stuff. If there is a work around, it might get a little lower in the priority list, but it will still get attention. Sometimes stuff comes up that is found while researching a major problem or putting in the groundwork for further development that they discover will be simple to fix or implement, and that might get slipped in before major stuff is fixed.
It's sort of like life. If you have to clean the garage, and when you start moving stuff around, you notice that the latch on your big toolbox is a teeny bit askew and that's why you haven't been able to get it to latch right for months, you might take a few minutes and a pair of pliers to just bend it back to the right angle and, voila one small problem fixed before the major priority project for the weekend! You can then work on the 2 day garage cleaning project.
At the end of day one, all you can report to your spouse that you fixed the latch on your toolbox, but the garage is in mid-shambles because often, cleaning projects start out with pulling a lot of stuff out of places and that makes it look worse than it did before you started... By day two, you may have fixed a few more little things in the process of finishing up the garage. Hopefully, by the end of day 2, you have a bunch of little things and the one big one done... but sometimes, the big project is bigger than you thought and it's going to take one more weekend.
But next weekend, you have to take the family to visit your in-laws for someone's birthday or anniversary and you can't finish the garage until the following weekend. Or you get a huge storm, and there's water leaking into the basement... which makes the garage project a lower priority than getting the water out of the basement... It might be a month or more before you get back to working on the garage, and then some of what you did before has likely been undone by other people shoving stuff out of the way, and you have to start back a few steps earlier than where you really left off ...
Your spouse is not very happy about where you are with the garage-cleaning project at all now, but you've been doing the best you can with the time and the tools that you have.
Yeah, it's kinda like life... and most of the time, it's stuff that can't be avoided.

Quote:Granted, the "Do it now" part seems to be an attempt at humor, but the sentiment is spoken clearly with the other statements... and it is only one postThey have had 6 years to adress this issues. Long enough.
If they have to design an entirely new engine then do it. If they have to swap their own servers then do it.

Aside from making their own real-world banking system and the whole point of the game (from what I've read) is to run around and get more real-world money from doing stuff and investing your own money into the game.....
Freaks me out as a concept.

Scary idea - imagine what theft of account information in THAT game would cost you ...

One of the things that people forget is that the $15 a month subscription fee gives us ONLY access to the game servers whenever they are available for play. While the money collected in game sales and subscription fees does go to operations and expenses, there is never any guarantee that anything will be perfect or even nearly so - as a matter of fact, the TOS (that we agree to every time we play the game) explicitly states that conditions of game play may change at any time without notice.
I'm not arguing that lag and dc's are not aggravating and frustrating, or that the devs should not make an effort to fix issues such as these. But to argue that you pay for hardware upgrades - well, no. You don't. You pay for access to the game servers with the game as it is.

Quote:My first thought is that it was possibly a slow down or disconnect on your own internet service (since nobody else on your team was dc'd and since you couldn't get the CoX servers page to load properly). The other websites loading fine could be attributed to browser caching, depending on your settings.Had a couple of weird disconnects today, first on mission 2 of the ITF and the second in a Praetorian AV mission (not fighting, hanging out in a corner with no activity). I wasn't able to disconnect immediately, instead I got the message about checking the server status page. When I went there, it wouldn't load (a couple times I got the page, but there were no servers listed). Meanwhile, other websites loaded just fine. Eventually I was able to reconnect. Nobody else on my team DCed either time.
Thoughts?
Or there could have been an issue anywhere on the path from your ISP to the CoX servers that interfered with you (and possibly a select other few) which did not affect other websites (different paths) or other people that you were playing with (also different paths).
What server were you playing on?

Right click on the updater shortcut, select Properties. Find the field labeled "Target" and add the port you want to use after the text that is in that field.
If your target looks like this: "C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\CohUpdater.exe"
You update it by putting your cursor after the last quotation mark and adding a space, and then typing in a dash and the word port, another space and the number of the port you want to use. If you wanted to use port 80, then it would look like this:
"C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\CohUpdater.exe" -port 80

Quote:I believe, based on stuff I've seen here and stuff I've read, that the only time you will run into a "conflict" is if the faster memory can not adjust down to the speed of the slower memory. You want to keep each stick of ram at the same capacity and the same speed or It will cause conflicts... unless something was changed in vista and 7. 4 1 gb ddr3 pc10666 for example are fine but you wouldnt want to mix anything. Some will even say not to mix different manufacturers of ram which is more than likely a bad thing too.
And I believe the speed and capacity need only to be the same in each of the pairs or triplets of modules - not between each of the pairs or triplets - depending on your motherboard. I'm not all that knowledgeable about clock speeds and I'm probably way over-simplifying ... but I've built my last 4 computers, and it works for me.

I'm sorry to not be able to offer any assistance in the matter of the issues with the WW. When it was first introduced and I was on my old Pentium IV computer, I would actually have the game freeze on me for long agonizing seconds ... like 45-60 or so.
