Hm. Well, I guess it's something we'll have to mull over if we undertake this project.
-
It's not about "fixing." Over and over, players have said not to take things away, so we won't. We'd only add things and simply leave the legacy stuff alone. In this case, maybe we'd add a highres version of the first example but not bother with the second since the texture's probably already as crisp as it gets.
-
It's pretty cropped as well. You're seeing maybe 60% of it?

Quote:The way I'm envisioning the modern/movie look would be pretty different from the Defense/Olympian guard stuff--definitely distinctive enough to merit a new set. It'd also be fairly plain for maximum customization. A subdivided version would be somewhat less plain, but still versatile.*snip*
...I like the idea of subdivided surfaces, surface textures, and ribbing... But I don't think that described Defense/OlympianGuard/CoT/Stealth/Justice/etc AT ALL. The sets, while very cool looking, are too styled to provide players much utility. What I mean by this, is that they're simply not plain enough to fit a large amount of different concepts.
I'm seeing some interest in such a set, but overall, my read is that it appears to be a lower priority than "old school" tights. -
A few items have been lost or removed over time for various reasons, but don't worry--current policy is that nothing is to be removed. Any new addition would be in the CC alongside existing options.
-
Quote:We're not taking anything away. Old painted-on look will still be available, but artistically, I think it's quite unlikely that we'd ever do a new, HD "painted-on" look.No. They would be usable as unitards or catsuits but then they wouldn't be actual tights anymore. I realize the painted-on look is only used in comics because it's easier to draw, but the look has become iconic to the genre.
Any new creases or seams would be quite subtle anyway. -
Quote:This is the essential take-away, I think. Regardless of what we do, everyone's expressing a similar interest in adding realism/modern textures to these costume pieces. So we could potentially do a few things:I want tights that look like real material. Generally leather, but quilted, chainmail, and scales are good...
--revamp original tights w/ subtle folds, seams
--add new tights w/ heavy folds
--add new tights w/ other basic textures (leather, etc.)
And as a related side note, I'm seeing plenty of interest in:
--masks
--tights geo variation (trunks, skirts for men, jodphurs, etc.)
(this is where we get into the Golden Age super-hero stuff--probably why the two topics became conflated in the first place). -
Quote:Feel free to discuss patterns! Changing underlying tech for this category is worth considering, and I'm happy to ask the team about it, but it's unlikely to happen.I'm not sure if this would fall under the basic tights thing, but the patterns. I have an idea to allow for 3 colors, instead of tights+1 color detail.
Instead of having the patterns and the tights styling on the same selection section, have a whole different section for patterns, with two of them allowed under the section. I *think* this would be possible because the way the logos under Chest Details work. I think it would completely change the costume experience, in a good way, since all the previous patterns would be available, and you wouldn't be forced into using any at all. -
Incidently, I'm downloading useful images from our last thread for future reference, but please feel free to repost them if it helps to make your point here. Thanks!

Hey, folks. There's been some interest in the basic tights category lately, so let's talk about it in depth. If we were to make some new BASIC TIGHTS options for the game, what would you want to see?
Some options to consider:
A) revamped old school/spandex tights similar to the ones we already have (adding a few details like seams but still mostly plain)
B) loose-fitting tights with folds (like you'd see in Golden/Silver Age comics)
C) modern super-hero tights (w/ ribbing, surface texture(s), subdivided surfaces) a la Ultimates 1 or Marvel movies.
Some say that the Defense and Olympian Guard base textures cover this style fairly well. Do you agree?
Notes: in this thread, let's focus on BASIC TIGHTS ONLY.
--it's fine to discuss shorts, skirts, and other similar looks
--likewise, feel free to bring up related basic accessories (like masks, etc.)
--let's not discuss specific genre costumes in this thread
--let's keep posts to 1-2 paragraphs please; succinct points will get you maximum impact
Thanks! Let's get started. -
Hey, folks. While I'm enjoying reading all of your suggestions, this thread's gotten pretty far off topic and covered dozens of different themes. So here's what we'll do:
a) I'm going to relaunch this thread with a focus on basic tights, which is really the crux of the conversation
b) all other themes would be more at home in the main ALL THINGS ART thread, which is meant for general requests about anything you guys might want.
I love all the suggestions, but we need some organization.
Thanks!

Very useful to know. I figured that the Defense set would've covered it as well, yet there were still requests for more super-hero stuff after that shipped. Wanted to figure out exactly what you guys were after.
-
True. If we do a light version of B, it might work for the folks who want A. Maybe there's a sweet spot.

Quote:You guys are talking about a lot of different sets here. When I hear "Golden/Silver Age Comics," I think of super-heroes (jungle girls, for example, would be an entirely different genre--but a fun one!). If we're talking strictly about super-hero costumes, as I see it there are 3 possible ways to expand on the category:Since you did the art for it David, this will be the easiest reference for you. Signature Story Arc 3 splash screen ... with Statesman in the foreground ... notice the texturing of the spandex on his shoulder, and how that LOOK of threaded cloth is completely impossible to achieve with Tights or Tights w/Skin ... at ANY camera distance.
A) revamped old school/spandex tights similar to the ones we already have (adding a few details like seams but still mostly plain)
B) modern tights (w/ ribbing, surface texture(s), subdivided surfaces) a la Ultimates 1 or Marvel movies
C) pieces we just haven't made before (e.g. domino mask)
What are you guys most interested in? -
Hey, folks. As we continue to add costume options to the game--filling in gaps and checking items off players' long-time wishlists, it's interesting to watch the ongoing requests evolve. Lately, I've seen a few more mentions than normal about Golden/Silver age costume ideas, and I wanted to dig a little deeper about it.
Obviously, COH was originally conceived with that era in mind, and many "basic" super-heroic options are already available. But let me know what's missing for you, and maybe we can get something going. -
Quote:I'm as excited as you guys to see where the Designers take this story. Believe it or not, I actually don't know.I hope we get a replacement Super Captain America Man. ..., but the local Justice League needs to have a big blue boy scout at the lead. That's how you do Justice Leagues.

So I've been reading along, and I see plenty of ideas with potential but also plenty of ideas that kinda only work for one character or very limited niche.
And obviously, to have any chance of actually being made, I'm sure a funny idea will at least have to pass the "would work for a lot of people" test. But for a laugh, by all means keep posting the truly out-there stuff. -

Because of costume part ideas like brain-in-jar and a possible brainslug, I've started to think a lot more about humorous/silly/kitschy costume themes. Certainly, players have been making their own 'joke' costumes since the game began, and we routinely pick these sorts of things for our costume contest winners (if you make us laugh, you pretty much win). Didn't want to derail the Costume Workshop thread with this, but if any of you would like to discuss, feel free to post here.
--Good fit for the game?
--Something you've always wanted? -
Quote:Each port (from male-to-female or from male-to-huge) is a separate task. Porting existing pieces costs less time then developing something entirely new for females, so you buy back a couple accessories when you go for the simple port.when you say "time spent on males and females must be close to 50-50" how does the huge model fit into that equation? Is time spent developing for huge considered part of the development time for males or is there really a 33/33/33 division of labor going on?
