Quote:The issue is that the average regular user of internet forums will more than likely have a significant amount of personal info out there.Which handily supports my point: namely that seeing someone's random name on a forum is not going to destroy lives or lead to the loss of identity, unless you've already compromised your security through other means. I simply do not understand the level of scaremongering that goes on, I simply don't.
But prior to the ReadID, that personal info wasn't easily connectible to the user's forum activity.
Now it will be.
Given how many folks out there that would be very interested to know the personal info of a known MMO player, the whole RealID thing is just a bad idea.

No, but a real name is a first step in finding out other stuff about you.
A Global Handle would accomplish the anti-troll efforts without compromising this.
Also, spotted this gem on their boards:
"The US Department of Justice: Office on Violence Against Women advise women to choose gender neutral forum handles and never post their real names on message boards in order to protect themselves from being targeted by cyber-stalkers.
Maybe they know something Blizzard does not? "

I pointed out that it's astonishingly easy to bluff your way through situations like calling a bank teller or customer service rep to access an account, if you seem to have a ton of the account holder's personal info.
For a specific example, former governer Sarah Palin's personal e-mail account was hacked this way, the hackers just scrounged up enough 'personal info', via just normal Googling around, to bluff their way past Customer Service.
Do people need to secure their info better, in general? Yes.
However, that job isn't being made any easier by Blizzard forcibly requiring real names.
The contention is that Blizzard is making things worse.
Even the security aspect aside, folks should be able to just say they don't want their real names exposed, if nothing else for personal privacy.
Global Handles would accomplish the anti-trolling effects without compromising the other stuff.

Except that goldsellers/account thieves aren't so much 'determined' to steal your info specifically, as they're just omnipresent.
Having real names to start with, knowing you play an MMO, probably your gender, ethnicity, and that you're active in one forum and as such are probably active on the internet a fair amount, that makes their job that much easier.
And I reiterate the increased general mail spam this will generate.
A global handle instead of a real name will accomplish everything intended without opening up that extra amount of security issues.

Doesn't have to be sociopathic.
There's an entire multimillion dollar industry dedicated to harvesting info on MMO players to either try and sell them stuff or hack their accounts.
They are as tenacious as any sociopath and have a LOT of resources behind their efforts.
And even if they don't get you, anyone with your name they can find an e-mail for is going to get flooded with advertisements that are as likely to be viruses in disguise.
I can see far too many negatives in using real names to justify an act designed to just cull a few forum trolls.
-np -
I'll boil it down to a very simple question.
Is putting real names public going to make their average user MORE secure, or LESS?
Bearing in mind the likely level of security most folks maintain otherwise.
-np -
Is it wise to secure what personal information you put on the internet?
Sure.
That still doesn't mean it's "okay" when someone who hasn't been especially diligent about such things gets digitally violated.
I direct you to that one Blizzard employee that posted his name to prove that it was safe, only to have his address, personal e-mail, phone, family member info, his girlfriend's info and phone number, etc. posted to the WoW forums within hours.
You can do a hell of a lot of damage with that sort of info if you really want to. It's startling, but folks like Bank tellers can be bullshitted like anyone else as long as you're good at social engineering and have a handful of facts that seemingly only the account owner should have.
More than this, goldsellers WILL be harvesting these names and blanket-bombing e-mails to anyone with those names whether they're actually the right person or not.
And I sign my posts because I was brought up with the idea that it's proper to sign what you write.

Quote:www.pipl.comFor the most part the criticism it's suffered just struck me as so hyperbolic (not necessarily your example...more those who believe it will lead to widespread identity theft and the like) I find myself rolling my eyes.

I've participated in some 20 MMOs over the years starting in Meridian 59 and DAoC.
I have found that most MMO forumites are pretty much the same.
The trolls have varied wildly, however.

Blizzard forums are already exploding with outrage.
-np -
Um, the reason there's no limit is that the exchange rate is so horrid that very very few people actually buy prestige.
Additionally, having huge amounts of prestige over the amount you need for your base is mechanically useless.
Or are you really basing you self-worth on what other people do?
-np -
Buy the Martial Arts pack. Use the Ninja Run travel power.

I got the impression that they're only really intended to function during base raids.
Which don't happen.
Grr.
I want decorative versions of most of the functional base items.

[color=gold]<text>[/color] - experiment with color names. #ffffff hexadecimal color notation works too.
[b]<text>[/b] - bold
[i]<text>[/i] - italic
[u]<text>[/u] - underline
[size=5]<text>[/size] - text size change, "7" is maximum size
Combo of all of the above
Note that when using multiple tags you need to nest them like [u][i]<text>[/i][/u].
Additionally...
[img]<image URL>[/img] - puts an image directly into the post, example:
The Full BBCode tag list for the forums can be found here.

Yeah, speak to your SG members, someone was probably experimenting with the "add personal item" button.
-np -
This happens occasionally. Pretty much you have to wait for a GM to help out, they need to restore a non-corrupted copy of your base from backup or something.
-np -
More specifically, in random doorways.
Which is part of the reason you can't put base items in doorways, so folks don't get stuck in them.

The Personal Storage Vault needs 5 Control and 5 Energy. Do you currently have any Control or Energy generators already?
If not, you can use the Combo Power and Control Unit, which is the starter item for new super-bases. The unit produces 125 Energy and 75 Control, which can power a few things.
The combo unit can only go into an Oversight Center.
Cost for both room and unit is 75000 Prestige total.
If you need more Energy or Control than that, you need to first place an Energy or Control room as appropriate. Note that the Oversight Center is no good in this case, as it can ONLY take a Combo Power and Control Unit.
After the room is placed, you need an Energy or Control main generator. You can supplement with Auxilary Items if needed.
-np -
Well, I was able to finally place it by deleting a couple neighboring rooms, placing the greatroom, and then putting the neighboring rooms back.
It was weird before. I could do anything else, no problems, but as soon as I select the greatroom it'd lock.
-np -
I have a base where I'm trying to place a Great Room decorative space.
Every time I select it, the game freezes when I'm trying to position it.
I've run the verify all files option a couple of time already. This issue wasn't happening up until last night.
Anyone having similar issues?
-np -
You just need sufficient control and power.
If you have both, perhaps the access permissions for your SG are wonky?
-np -
Missing flashing lights, mebbe?
Try embedding an Inspiration Collector into the floor. Or mebbe into the overhead structure.
