  1. Wait, I'm confused about the post... so the cops knew internal affairs were setting them up?
  2. Can anyone copy/paste into a post for those of us behind a firewall?
  3. Did you know?

-- At the end of closed beta, it was requested of all the players to gather outside of the Police Dept. in Kings Row for a photograph. This screen shot later turned up in one of the guides for the game.

-- Some of the first pictures of City of Heroes (well before beta) showed the now removed hit location chart. Jack claimed the idea was to allow characters to aim for a leg to slow movement or the head for extra damage, among other hit locations. This was removed from the game in hopes of making the game easier.

-- Before the game's release, Cryptic claimed they were aiming for an 'E' Everyone rating. Many followers of the game were worried the game would become too childish. All in all, going for an 'E' rating for an on-line game is a pipe dream and very little was actually changed in an attempt to get the lower rating. Of course, City of Heroes has a 'T' Teen rating.

-- Every possible combination of starting powers has at least one attack (that is, a power that does damage). This was changed very early on due to the fact that it was possible to make "gimp" builds where Brawl was your only attack.

-- At one time, the talks were to obtain your final Power Pool power (fourth in the set), you would have to take all the other powers in the set (instead of the requirement to take two as it is now). Fans were worried about builds being too similar and being so restricted in power choices that it was changed.

-- MacAllen, a very powerful fan in pre-beta and beta days, once claimed that if Cryptic didn't make the changes he suggested, the game would fail. MacAllen is long since gone and the game is still here.

-- Statesman was VERY involved in the pre-beta boards, often responding to personal attacks and game critizism in a public forum. It was inspiring to read and gave many readers hope in the game since no one had heard of Cryptic Stuidos before.

-- Jack 'Statesman' Emmert is a huge fan of The Hulk.

I've asked him in PM what kind of imagery (super-hero partciularly) he prefers, but he never answered. Perhaps he just thinks of himself as very Linear minded, one step up from a pawn so to speak. (Oof, bad Chess pun) ...and doesn't want an Icon.

_Castle_, is it understood with the Devs that a lot of people wanted a Skills system for some Out-Of-Combat entertainment? From the sounds of it, Invention uses salvage, which is earned slowly with combat. Has this been considered? Is there any non-combat plans in the works?

    [/ QUOTE ]

    Yes.

    [/ QUOTE ]

You know what, that's good enough for me -- for now. I guess I'll hang onto the Inventions idea like I held onto Skills. Here's hoping I don't get duped on the same basic concept twice.
  8. [ QUOTE ]
Jonyu, poz and Positron are working on an 'Invention' system, which branched off of the Skill System work. The 'Salvage' system used in bases is an offshoot of the skills system design as well.

Unfortunately, I don't think anything more in depth than that is scheduled at this time.

Yes, we remember it. Getting it 'right' has proven difficult, though, which is why you folks haven't seen it. It's still something we are working on, though.

    [/ QUOTE ]

And so we are left to wonder if we should take the word of the 'Cryptic Studios Creative Director' or the 'Cryptic Game Designer' (or maybe we should just wonder if the word "shelved" means different things to different people). Personally, I've decided that Cryptic forgot to issue forth the latest memo on what to tell the gaming public about the skills system. I guess I should be happy that my biggest complaint with Cryptic is the off-again/on-again Skill systems... I just find it hard to believe NO ONE can make Skills fun. Hire me! I'll make them fun! Heck, I'll give ya my idea for free!

((added note: this could have been a nice thread, too bad there are a few annoying posters that feel they need to repeatedly fill the thread with garbage -- funny at first isn't so funny the second plus time around))
  10. This is my problem from the Skills/Invention situation; the whole reason I posed the question to begin with...

Skills were going to be the out-of-combat thing to do in Paragon City. When your Hero wanted to wind down a day of fighting, skills, in theroy, were the thinking man's fight. Way back in Issue Three, as well as very true even today, City of X has a glaring problem: It's either all combat, all the time or log out of the game. It has never moved past the one strength that it has.

So now Inventions are coming. From what I've read from the message boards, Gamespy interviews, etc, it's basically crafting. That's great! That's a wonderful out-of-combat thing to do! Except there seems to be a catch. From everything I've read so far, all the crafting uses Salvage. Normally this wouldn't be a huge issue, but getting the type of salvage you need by just going out and defeating MOBs is nearly impossible. Not only that, but they've slowed the Salvage drop rate so much, I'm only getting one or two pieces per hour soloing the next to hardest mission setting. And the one thing they should REALLY avoid is forcing a crafting-based system on Super Groups, leaving out the soloing crowd.

I'll, of course, have to wait until it comes out since currently this is mostly guess work piecing together knowledge that is out there. I just hope it's an out-of-combat system that everyone can take part in -- like Skills was supposed to be.

Any chance we could invent skills? Because if not, meh.
  12. That's about the most depressing PM I've ever heard... I guess Skills did exactly what it was supposed to do, keep me in the game long enough for my intrest to re-peak. I'm sure that wasn't their idea, but that's how it worked for me.
  13. What is it with the Cryptic turnover rate? *sigh* Another Red Name going away... Stay safe out there Arctic_Sun!
  14. Ahh, it seems only like Issue Three when all the good little Heroes gathered around their web browsers chatting about what might be. Now, as we gear up for Issue Seven, I wonder what has become of the off-again, on-again Skill system. Is it still on the 'Short List' of game improvements? Will it be something that Heroes and Villains both get? Or has it been completely scrapped due to lack of gaming ideas?

I love playing this game, but I often get strange reactions from people when I tell them I play MMO's. How do you guys justify/explain playing the game/use of the game?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Yeah, someone gives me crap about playing something I enjoy, there's a pretty good chance what they say doesn't mean diddly to me. I'm gonna guess you're a young folk. If someone is giving you a hard time about gaming, don't let it get to ya. Good chance they're never going to understand.

  19. He just keeps staring at the button... He really wants to press the button. Button, button, button, button, button... Not allowed to press the button. Doesn't stop the desire to press the button. So he wants you to press the button. Press the button. Button, button, button, button, button, button, button, button, button, button, button. He so wants to press the button. Bounces with desire to press the button. Bounces, bounces, bounces, bounces, bounces for the button, button, button, button, button, button. Bouncy for buttons, bouncy for buttons. He won't stop his bouncing because he's bouncing for the button. You can press the button, so you have no reason to bounce. Why are you bouncing? Bouncing for a button you can press? Maddness! He can not press the button, so instead he bounces. Do you choose to understand? Bouncing is only for buttons and he bounces for buttons. He understands, do you?

If thats true States, then how come so many servers are a ghost town when traveling through the zones? I remember a time when there used to be people everywhere. I've been travelled about and checked out many servers. The only servers that seem to have a population now are Freedom and Virtue...the rest just seem very empty. Even high level zones like Peregrine Island seem to have nobody on them. It just seems very odd that this is the case if the numbers are as you say they are.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Another thing you have to consider is there are now players that span vastly more zones then before. I mean, think about it. If you have vastly more places for a person to be, plus the idea that many of them are in mission areas, plus the thought of if they're in a PvP area, they don't want to be seen, plus the possibility they're located in their base area... That's a lot of hiding spots...
  21. To Jack:
Best wishes to your family and everyones family overseas... I've got some friends/family over there myself so I know how hard it can be.

    To Stateman:
States, you're my fav Dev because you speak your mind. I'm sure if you say something too stupid Cuppa will delete your post just like she would any of ours (give Cuppa another raise =). If you ever get the chance, give the head Dev over at ATITD a call. You two have a lot in common.
  22. This might be completely wrong, but I'm guessing Geko takes things said by the player base VERY hard. A year ago, Geko was all over the place. Chatting, posting about the game, telling people ACC wasn't nerfed... but lately, he's down to posting during what seems like "Panic Prevention" post. Geko was never afraid to get into a squabbling match with Geko either =) While I never fought with 'em, I've read plenty of his back and forth =) All that said, let Geko know he has at least one fan in me.

And you should have been around on the way way WAY back boards (before beta). When Statesman made a post about having classes instead of just choosing powers, I lost it. I was playing Champions twice a week at that time and I slammed him hard for "not sticking with his dream for the game". Then he made the comment that they were going for an 'E' rating and would make changes to get it. Wow did that tick me off. I understand he wanted to make it a game you can play with your kids, but I was SO angry because I thought it would turn into a "kids game". Now THOSE were some hard times. I still don't like the class system as much as an open ended system, but I do see it from his side as well. Mr. Emmert has since then impressed me time and time again. He has an excellent game (longest I've played any MMO) that he continues to try to make better. I respect that a lot.

And finally, Our Mrs. Cuppa. I don't think we've had any violent run-ins (minus when I got the "You hacked our game E-Mail" =) and I've seen you bite your tongue over and over. You are a wonderful Community Rep. With a heart of gold and patience as long as the Appalachian mountain range, you've become as valuable as any Dev to City of Heroes.

You got to share stuff, so I thought I'd do the same =) CoH isn't perfect, but with the wonderful people that is working on it, it's always getting better. Stay safe all!
  23. Completely depends on your group. Champions is a lot more number crunching and a lot more flexable. It's also a lot... a LOT more hardcore. M&M is a much smaller bite. It still lets you (kinda) make the powers you want, but everything is in a nicer bite-sized package.

A CoH PnP RPG (wow, that's a lot of letters that stand for stuff) will prob go to being easier than M&M -- thus appealing to a younger audience. Just my guess here... You know it's not going to be involved as Champions, and Cryptic liked to involve the "whole" when doing stuff, so my guess is pre-made powers based off of a one dice attack system.
  24. The reason why the Icons are where they are, or so I re-call, are two fold...

    1) The missions inside. Since they can spawn fairly high baddies, you don't want them running around GC or AP.

    2) Don't want true newbies blowing all their INF changing their sock colors. Though just playing the game, you don't find out about the Icons store until you're old enough (in game) to decide if you want those new socks or enhancements.
