don't like it, don't use it.

    An SO.
I remember the days when high level types would drop an SO in your tray if they liked your costume, and it was a REALLY BIG DEAL.

One CAN argue any number of comical hypothesis...whether they're raising legitimate points or just flailing around pointlessly is a separate question.

4 powers doesn't make it "common", sorry.

    SSA2.1 choices

I've only run it once, took Back Alley Brawler, and he got himself killed before the fight with Clamor.

Will try other folk on future runs- BAB was underwhelming.
  6. this isn't an FPS game where map geometry plays a big part in the gameplay- maps are basically scenery, a backdrop for our activities. As such, I'll take a bunch of re-skins over one all-new map that would suck up vastly more resources...
  7. Son fell asleep hard after an afternoon viewing of Madagascar 3 (excellent fun, by far the best of the series) so I ran Scab Factory through an arc I recall as one of my favorites, Oh Wretched Man.

Happily, the writing holds up. The mechanics are a bit vanilla compared to the stuff we've been getting lately, but I'll take a good story told simply over a poor one told spectacularly every time. Cool meeting Ghost Widow, the story mostly sidesteps the 'lacky' problem prevalent in a lot of the older red-side missions, and all in all it was still a winner.

My one caveat is the TOTALLY POINTLESS AND IRRITATING 'Speak to Bloody Bay Liason' mission that Marino hands out before the story gets rolling. Especially irritating as the whole Wretch saga takes place in Mercy. Happily, I had an autocomplete in my back pocket and was able to get right on with the arc.

My boy woke up just before the final mission, so I put it on hold.

After dinner, he wanted to "visit the Red guy who blows things up" (Scab Factory), and I had to explain that I didn't have a Mayhem Mission ready on him just yet. He wanted to 'visit' him anyway, so we ran the Wretch Rescue mission together.

    Things he likes:

    The mission map.

He made me keep it open the whole time. When we were uncovering a new part he called it "tunneling".

    Wretch.

"Is that our friend? Oh look, he SMASHED that guy! I like him!"

    Things he doesn't like:

    Mu

He calls them "seatbelt guys" and hates them because they "steal our Insurance bar".

    Fortunata

    "Dada,I hate that lady!"
    "Why?"
"Because she's got a WEIRD HEAD."

Had fun, hit 19, kept the boy entertained for a bit. He would have preferred a Mayhem, or failing that something in a cave (why he likes caves, I do not know, but he loves them- "maybe we can find a cave!" he'll declare hopefully when I take a newspaper mish).

I like the mace/stone combo for brutes.
A bit of an end hog, but lots of smashing fun.

  10. Okay, discovered the big problem with Mayhem missions- they're so fun that now my son *only* wants to play Mayhem missions. And when we're out running around the city he constantly wants to stop and "blow up" cars, trucks, bus stops & mailboxes.

THANKS A LOT, PARAGON STUDIOS! =P

My solution has been to keep a villain with a full newspaper mission bar parked at the brokers for instant access. A clumsy workaround, but effective.

Been doing not much exciting this week, just some generic leveling. I have a guy in the range for the First Ward, so I'm going to check that out. I logged in Crafticus, my field crafting tank, to get him a level and found that tanks just *need* teams to be interesting for me...well, non Fire tanks, anyway. Even at a pretty low level he's impervious to most harm, but it takes him a relative eternity to plow through a mission (shield/mace).

    Continuing to bank hero/villain merits.

Made a character for the Meme Costume Contest, which I probably won't be able to attend, but I figure I'd at least get a screenshot for this thread out of it so why not.

And a non-game related superhero note, Marvel's The Super Hero Squad Show is by far my favorite superhero teevee show. It showed up on Netflix instant a bit ago, and my son is obsessed. It's definitely aimed at young kids, but it really captures the feel of what I liked about the 'universe' concept and it's 'everything plus the kitchen sink' approach to heroes & villains co-existing has a very City of Heroes feel.

Very fun, when he wants to watch one I often as not sit down with him.

Repurposing pop culture junk in a new way *is* creativity.

But like anything else, it can be done well or poorly.

    LOL

The only costume contest I ever won earned me a whopping 1 million.
Which was quite a sum at the time!

That's not what I got from Uber's comment at all.

I think the "issues" regarding blasters are being overstated. I'm not denying the issue exists but saying "Blaster can't readily solo extreme difficulties, fix it so they can"?
What most folk here are actually saying is "most AT power combos can easily play at difficulty levels most blaster power combos find difficult or impossible".

That's not overstating anything, it's a simple observation.
    And it should be addressed.

eh, easier to just hand-wave it all away.

ignoring some dude attacking the PPD is no less a failure of heroism than ignoring that bunch of hellions mugging a lady outside city hall, which happens probably 50,000 times a day.
  17. No experience with beam rifle, but as down as I generally am on AR it's a terrific AoE set.
  18. I solo 99% of the time, if not more.

Game works great for me- there's a lot of crappy older content, but it's getting easier and easier to ignore/skip over as they add decent repeatable missions & new story arcs at various levels.

I've been playing mostly 50's or lowbies since my return- last night I logged in my level 24 scrapper, hit 'find contact' and WOW there are a lot of them in the First Ward! Haven't played any of that stuff yet.

So, yeah, plenty of old stuff needs an overhaul or replacement, but single player was massively improved during my year long hiatus.

The build I'm using now was hashed out in my old ar/dev makeover thread- this was long enough ago that I'm hazy on the specifics, but I really liked Ignite and I really liked having my caltrops 3 slotted with slow/recharge, so I assume my one-slotting of 'trops & passing over of Ignite were sacrifices on the way to the cap.

I do remember one of the challenges softcapping a /dev is a lack of melee attacks in the secondary- we were scraping up bonuses where we could.

The thread is still around, I should go dig it up and take a look at the thought process again.

well, I did it by way of an experiment- inasmuch as it bought me firsthand experience with the value of softcapped defense, it was definitely worth it.

It's a character I wasn't really enjoying in his previous incarnation, so that's a wash- the problem is with the powerset, or rather the combination of ar & dev, once so fruitful.

As far as performance goes, there's just no comparison- he's basically untouchable now, barring weird effects. There's no way he could have soloed at X8 with his old build.

You haven't "built" anything until your character enters the game world.

The game has a limited toolset and creativity within the game world is defined by how you use those tools. You might like a hat that looks like a golden Unicorn head, but you can't have it because it isn't in the game.

You can either make do with the existing options (aka be creative), or you can sit down, make a pouty face and wait for the Name Fairy to come along, wave her wand and make everything all better.

I know which option I prefer, and it's worked well so far.

  24. I've never had trouble finding an appropriate name for any of my characters, and not because I resorted to word salad.

This is one of those situations where people who look for solutions find them, and those who reflexively blame others for their own shortcomings don't.
