ASM #653 spoiler alert
Peter's new boss calls him out and says "we need to have nice long talk about you and Spiderman."
His boss is a bit suspicious about Peter not being around when Spidey is, however per the Mephisto Mindwipe, there is supposed to be a "psychic blindspot" in effect to prevent people from "connecting the dots or doing the math" about Peter being Spidey. This blindspot event affects Norman the lunatic Osborn, so I can't see his new boss being immune.
HOWEVER: he may suspect that Peter is equipping Spiderman and since he has stated previously that he doesn't want weapons made, this could be the beginning of the end of Big Time.
Hope not. I like that Peter is being a scientist and not a newsman, and that Spidey may be receiving some nice hardware upgrades. -
Quote:This. Wolverine has many ties to Japan over the years of his life, and in modern times he was in love with Mariko Yashida, who was related to the mutant villain Silver Samurai.Anyone nerdraging over the Japan idea really doesn't know Wolvie's backstory too well.
They were going to be married but the wedding was aborted, I think due to the mutant villain Mastermind's interference.
Mariko is currently dead last I checked, but it's been awhile.
So this plot sounds like it is based on Wolverine's love for Mariko. -
Quote:Well said, indeed. My main argument against the last one is that I'm kind of sick of badges that become much more difficult to achieve for other characters 6 months down the road, after the rush effect has worn off. Things like RV AVs/Heroes, Master of badges and the like. Even with the resurgence in Mothership raids, those badges will likely take you 10 weeks to earn, when they could be earned in a week when they were new, due to the near-constant Mothership raiding in prime time when the RWZ was new. This will be one of those types of badges. Fairly easy for your characters that can get it now, significantly more time-consuming for new characters to get in the months and years to come.

I would rather watch a week long marathon of Galactica 1980 and Highlander 2 then seek a new 0 defeats Mo badge.

The ONLY positive thing about having to run the 50 TF requirement is all the potential incarnate shards one could get from the assorted kills.
However that does not counter balance the negativity of having to run 50 Weekly TF's.
Run once for the first badge, fine. Ten for the second one?: ok. But 50 for the third? Nope. 20 would be more palatable. -
Quote:50? yuckWell, they're in the press release for today, so:
(Also, the boards refuse to let me format this, so...)
Hero Badge Villain Badge Description
Assistant Accomplice You helped a team complete a Weekly Strike Target even though you already received the bonus for the week.
Backup Confederate You helped 10 teams complete a Weekly Strike Target even though you already received the bonus for the week.
Partner Conspirator You helped 50 teams complete a Weekly Strike Target even though you already received the bonus for the week.

Quote:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superman_(film)That was my only problem with the Donner cut -- they blatantly did something they used in the first movie. I would have been okay with Lois knowing that Clark Kent was Superman. She's supposed to be a star journalist. She's smart. She should be able to figure these things out. But that's not the direction Donner went.
All in all, though, the Donner cut is a far superior movie than what the Salkinds and Richard Lester did to it.
Turns out they were filming the two Supermans at the same time and finished 75% of Superman 2 then refocused on Superman 1. Looks like Superman 1 was going to end with the missile he diverted into space blowing up the phantom zone and starting the events of #2, and that in #2 the three villains would devastate Earth and then Superman would do the time warp. -
Quote:As I recall, didn't the Donner version end with Superman doing the spin the earth time warp to repair all the damage as well as wipe Lois' memory?Thats why I enjoy the Donner cut more, all that nonsense is gone and the film is more rounded including a more emotive connection with his father in the Fortress. (Thanks for reminding me btw, i forgot I had that tucked away in a cupboard somewhere).
And I thought the Airplane rescue scene in Superman Returns is the suspenseful quality that the rest of the film should of continued, unfortunately it descended into a mopey mess which wasn't Routh's fault. I thought he made a good Superman tbh, he didn't get the quality acting scenes to really get his teeth into the part in my opinion.
Lets face it, the original is the classic and as much as the studio wants another successful Superman trilogy or more, the story is so popular a movie adaptation will be attempted at least once every 10-15 years like clockwork.
Or is it more accurate to say that instead of him spinning the Earth backwards in time, that he simply propelled himself into the past and the Earth moving backwards was the visual effect so the audience would know what he was doing? -
Quote:If they could somehow convert/adapt Batman/Superman Public Enemies to the big screen, I would like to see that. More then enough supervillains and heroes to please many while not taking the spotlight from the two.I think this guy will do fine, I just hope the movie has a better script/plot than the last one did. Lets get supes a worthy adversary this time other than lex trying to pull another real estate scandal. Lets have a comic book movie with some action instead of one that induces a coma. I vote for some sort of brainiac incarnation.
As far as supermans build, I've noticed that the further you go back, the skinnier superman is/was. Some of the recent animation has him built like the friggin hulk. I'd say he should be buff, but not monstrous like some depictions i've seen. -
Wrapped Leader badge on a couple of alts, then just ran TF's for shards to Alpha Slot some alts.
-
Remember when Tom Cruise was the rumored choice to play Tony Stark/Iron Man? Be very GLAD that abominable choice wasn't made.
-
Quote:Just be glad it's not Nic Cage they cast as Superman. Do a Google search using keywords Nic Cage Superman and see the images of him in costume. What a laugh. And this guy won't buff up for the role as well? Please...
I ultimately really couldn't care less how this new guy exactly stacks up to any of the other actors before him but seriously do you actually think he's that significantly different measurement-to-measurement from those other guys? Do you really think they are going to be letting him look like a beanpole in a major motion picture despite what silliness JMS is currently doing to "Twilightfy" the character?
Dang, and here I thought people got worked up about who might be playing Wonder Woman. -
Quote:Suggest you check Judge Dredd. He and the other Judges do age, despite the medical tech of the world they live in which includes age retardation and cloning. Some recent stories have dealt with the fact that Dredd isn't as young and fit as he was at the beginning and that his time may be running out. One such issue ended with him deciding that if he is going to go out it will be in service to the law and the criminals will know they faced Dredd. He refuses to take the "long walk" that some retired Judges do.I wish that comics would learn to evolve and end. Having Spiderman stay 15 to 30 for 40 years is ridiculous. Having the comics age with the fans would be nice to see.
Quote:All it would require would have an arc where Spiderman, Batman, etc. to pass on the torch to the next generation. Of course, it doesn't apply to Superman since he can't age or ages very slowly, but having Lois Lane and his friends age would make for some interesting stories. -
Quote:As I recall, Superman Returns began with a paragraph or two on the screen that summarized things before the movie started.I'll sign onto this point as far as Superman is concerned. I don't mind "origin stories" for superheroes but if there's any superhero out there that even the general public already knows the origins of it's Superman. Can we go at least another decade or two without having to "reintroduce" him or "reanalyze" what motivates him please?
A similar paragraph intro that summarizes his origin would be acceptable, then on with the movie. -
Quote:Well had the green crystal been destroyed along with all the others when Superman was depowered then I think he would have been depowered forever. The first film was great . . . until the end of the Helicopter scene. As soon as the "comic" elements of a goofy Lex Luthor and a horrible Lois Lane were added the film went down hill. The main problems were a dumb plot, a goofy villain with his goofy henchmen and the "deus ex machina" plot device of going into the past to save Lois . . . but nothing else and no consequences.
The second film was both better and worse. Better because it had real super villains, with good actors to play them. But it wasn't just things like "throwing the S" or telekinesis finger spray. It was the core of the plot . . . giving up his powers "forever" to boink Lois, and then getting them back with no consequences. And then re-wiring the Fortress to de-power Zod and friends? Zod and company were 2-dimentional villains. Lex was still goofy. Both movies were just plain bad writing. I think most of those decisions were made before Donner left the project.
And as bad as the plots were for those two (and I still like the movies mainly for Christopher Reeve), Superman Returns was even worse. I strongly disliked the "super kid" and the "stalker Superman" and the "lets redo the same plot as the first movie." I went from "Dislike" to "hate" for that film when Singer put in the "look at me, I'm Christ" moment as Supes fell back to Earth. Cheesy, manipulative and just plain bad.
I want a good story, without huge plot holes and good dialogue -- a little bit of suspension of disbelief is OK, but no more "WTF" moments. I want a good Lois Lane -- Erica Durrance has been the best so far, with the other TV versions a little bit behind. I want a villain with interesting character and understandable motivations who is not an idiot -- Braniac would be a good choice, but we have had too much of Lex Luthor. I want some good action that is going to challenge the Man of Steel. I have some confidence that Chris Nolan and Zack Snyder can deliver these things better than previous film versions.
As to the whole "give up the powers" thing, I suppose it comes down to not being able to have his cake and eat it too.
Rigging the Fortress though, makes sense. Superman needed some kind of an edge to defeat them and aside from donning a lead suit and holding kryptonite in his hand, his options were a bit limited.
Superman Returns: ugh. Designed to be a "spiritual successor" to Superman 1 and 2 and failed. The superkid was a bad idea given that Lois was memory wiped, thus she knows Superman is the father, but doesn't remember the when and where the kid was conceived, or that Superman is Clark? Plus rehashing Luthor's real estate plot was bad. -
Quote:Possibly. However I think the seeds of OMD removal were planted in the recent issue of Amazing, as MJ was thinking how Peter has made it. He's juggling his dream job, being Spiderman and having a girlfriend. But then she starts thinking that SHE isn't the girlfriend and seems to start feeling a bit jealous before squashing that thought.given that the choice to promote the new guy came completely the hell out of nowhere, im not laying any bets down on reversing old editorial mandates just yet. even then, im betting they wont fix that particular mess for another three or four years.
One can hope, I suppose.
Now comes a thought: IF OMD/BND/OMIT are undone, what changes for Spiderman will occur as the SPidey timeline is hopefully restored.
1. All of Spidey's past is supposed to be the same, minus the marriage. Thus MJ was still pregnant during the Clone Saga...ugh. Anyway, that means the marriage is restored and none of Peter's foes and friends should be adversely affected.
2. Aunt May should perish then if Spidey history is restored. That's fine, its time for Peter to move on without her and she should never have been retconned back from the dead after she perished in ASM 400.
3. As it was now revealed in OMIT that it was a joint effort by Dr. Strange, Iron Man and Reed Richards that caused the mindwipe and not Mephisto, then the mindwipe should still occur and the unmasking is undone. I still say a better way is to have Peter go back and warn his past self and then his past self disguises himself and says that his name is Ben Reilly when he unmasks.
4. How much of Spidey's adventures post OMD/BND/OMIT will change?
5. Would Peter still have screwed up his journalistic career only to land his dream job at the think tank? -
Quote:The same can be said of casting for Batman. Remember all the split opinions about Keaton being cast in the role until the movie came out? I thought he was good in both roles, Kilmer was better as Batman then Bruce and Clooney was better as Bruce. This is more or less the same problem they'll have to overcome when they choose the next actress to play Wonder Woman. Everyone looks to Lynda Carter as pretty much the literal "personification" of the character and I think that's been part of the reason it's been decades since the last Wonder Woman show/movie. It's as if no one seems to be able to move past having Lynda play the role.
At least in the long history of Superman we've already had at least 6-8 different guys play the part so I think it's easier in the minds of everyone to ultimately accept yet another actor for the role. As for this new guy I think it's funny that some people in this forum are saying he's "too skinny" to play the part. As far as "Hollywood magic" goes that's the kind of thing that can easily be corrected for so that's hardly a reason to think he couldn't do it.
I think also the fear of being typecast cannot be denied either. For all that happened to Christopher Reeve, whenever I hear his name I still think Superman first. Adam West is still remembered for Batman despite other things he's done. I enjoyed the episode of Batman TAS that played up on the typecasting issue with that episode of Adam West as the Grey Ghost. Lynda Carter, despite anything she's done since is still remembered more for Wonder Woman.
Harrison Ford: to me he's escaped the typecasting of Han Solo and Indy. Mark Hamil seems to be remembered as both Luke and the voice of the Joker. James Earl Jones has done a lot but is he remembered more as the "voice of Vader" or for his other performances?
Not to mention the cast of the original Star Trek. Granted the talent level varied among the cast. Still, typecasting occurred with them too.
Typecasting can be a curse that is hard to escape, though some have made it work for them. -
Quote:The main problem with some things about Superman 2 was due to Donner being pulled off the project after most of the movie was filmed. Things like "throwing the S" and the Amnesia Kiss as I recall were not part of Donner's version.Christopher Reeve was a great Superman for that time. He was the best personification of the character when "comic book heroes" were supposed to be somewhat comic. Things are different today.
As good as Reeve was, the earlier Superman movies had terrible writing and plots, with stupid plot holes and devices. Even the first two "iconic" ones.
All I want is a well written, well directed and acted film with a coherent plot and some great action and special effects. If they can do that, they could cast Jim Belushi as Superman . . . well, maybe not, but the casting isn't nearly as important as the rest. Give me a good story. Without any "throwing the S" or "you can't change the past, but if you do, nothing will happen." -
Quote:Indeed, I wonder how Cap is going to take the news when he finds out the military did this.the concept is pretty meh, and it always irks me to see the levels of '90s haet that Venom (and in his own way, Carnage) gets, but i wouldn't mind seeing a fresh take on Venom at this point. I dug seeing the monstrous Gargan Venom on the Thunderbolts (and as a Dark Avenger), but watching them infect someone else with the suit, under Steve Rogers run as America's top cop? Blech.
plus ive got an aversion to picking up any spidey or spin off spidey titles until OMD gets rewrtitten, retconned, or wiped out. Besides, Remender doesn't exactly inspire confidence. i wouldn't go so far as to say his writing is sub par, but it's pretty close.
Also I too endeavor to avoid Spiderman purchases due to OMD. Here's hoping that the new EIC endeavors to unravel that mess. -
Quote:Problem is that no matter who is cast, there will always be the "he's no Christopher Reeve".His bone structure is quite similar to Tom Welling, so that might appease a few die-hard Smallville fans
I'm not sure if he has quite the right "ageless" look for Superman though - like he doesn't seem to have that young-but-fartherly vibe that Christopher Reeve had.
Not saying that you are like that, just making a simple statement.
This guy looks like he could do it. He almost got unlucky enough to be cast for Superman Returns, glad he dodged that particular bullet-train wreck. -
What concerns me most about this new Venom story line is that these were the same people that brought us the walking disaster known as FRANKENCASTLE.....
-
Quote:Allegedly Brock had cancer when the symbiote first bonded with him, however at the time of their first bonding, Brock was feeling some serious hate for Spiderman and the symbiote itself had just been rejected by Spidey and nearly destroyed by the sonics from the church bells.I've always liked Venom as a villain. As a hero it's just silly.
I will reserve judgment on this new series. It may or may not go well.
But I have to say, if the symbiote left Brock because he was unhealthy... then why in the world would it willingly bond to a handicapped person? O_o
I mean, yes, with Venom Flash can walk again, but it seems like a pseudo-intelligent alien creature would try to find the HEALTHIEST person possible to merge with. Just sayin'.
At that point, I'd say beggars can't be choosers and they both had a common hatred. -
Strictly speaking, Flash should only have no memory of the Unmasking as that was when he learned Peter was Spidey. Thus for him, his life should still be the same minus the memories that "puny Parker" is Spidey.
Of course as Joephisto put it: it's magic we don't need to explain it. -
Quote:That's due to Marvel not having the guts to kill him off. Eddie Brock, the Symbiote and Venom are worn out concepts and perhaps the last lingering remnant of the first Secret War.Sooo...Brock's now basically a super white blood cell, with the abilities of Venom, and also sorta Leech. That's just straight up nutty.
Time to get rid of them and Carnage, for good.
