Oh, because it never happened to you it never happens at all.

I guess that example, minus the sponsor logo, that happened to me must be a figment of my imagination. The point was, since you missed it, that if something like that happens it reflects poorly on the sponsor even though they didn't endorse the behavior.

After asking around, it turned out that Sony Pictures Animation is releasing an animated film called "Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs". They "hired" Sony Online Entertainment, the MMO division that runs Everquest, Free Realms and other games, to promote the movie in Free Realms. SOE setup an event where food falls from the sky and players collect various bits to turn in for one or more tee-shirts with the movie logo on the chest.

As my avatar put on his in-game movie shirt and proudly became a corporate shill, I got to thinking of Captain Amazing from the film _Mystery Men_. Those who have seen the movie will recall that his uniform was covered in logos of the corporations that sponsored him, so that he looked more like a race car driver than a superhero.

How would you feel about real-life corporations paying to have their logo added to the game as a costume bit? What if it was a semi-cool looking costume like Pepsiman? What about something that resembled a racing jacket?

Would it be the height of selling out or would it be "cool" at all to have costume parts themed around a real-life corporate logo? Would it make a difference if the real-life logos were added as part of a pack of in-game logos like Crey Corporation or Hero Corp?

Unless NCSoft can control the actions of every player in the game I don't see how that could fly.

Imagine your 12 year old daughter is at Ms. Liberty training up, minding her own business, and a guy with McDonald's golden arches on his chest tells her he effed her mother last night. That'd be cool, amirite?

Or someone with a Disney logo is standing under Atlas spouting off that the GLBT people don't belong in a game like this because it goes against everything Disney stands for...or some bullcrap.

And if anyone thinks things like that wouldn't happen then you havn't been playing MMOs very long, this MMO in particular.
  3. Across all servers I have 88 characters, all are female.

I once had a male character, I deleted him. I've deleted many more female characters though.

I am a female in real life.
  4. The old screen shots were saved as tga's, I had to convert to png to upload to Imageshack.

My first beta character, in metal armor.

Taking in the view before entering an instanced mission.

    Millennium City is huge.

    And a little futuristic.

I didn't take many shots, I was too busy playing.

I don't think CO is cartoony, at least not like WoW. My only gripe with CO is that the bodies are great, the faces not so much. Maybe if I really spent time on a face I can get it more realistic, not sure.

    Is she cartoony?

Or her? Requisite cat-girl. Yes, tails move.

I don't really have much to leave anyone, sorry. There are no IOs worth giving away, and you can have whatever inf is on my Iso when I reach 50. But if you expect me to log in and out of characters to pool the inf, forget that.

And I was wrong about the open beta. Apparently they were giving away keys if you registered at Fileplanet to get the download. If that's unlimited or what, I don't know.

Nope, but I will be in CO.

Kong, you have to have a pre-order code to get into the (not so) open beta, but that doesn't mean you have to buy the game in the end.

I've already decided I don't want to do another Isos, and that's the only time I play CoX as it is so I'll probably stop my sub here.

I'm finishing this Isos, but after that it'll be "so long, and thanks for all the fish."

  9. Here's an interesting feature for the post padders:

Click Members List in the black bar up top. Then click the Posts heading to sort the names in order of highest post to lowest post counts. Now it's easier to see where you rank and how far you have to go to pass someone else.

That'll cut down on summoning, maybe not so much in Isos, but solo yeah.

Sorry if I scared anyone, I thought it was understood that when speaking of Hamster in the Victory section it was Satanic Hamster.

Your reason for the original post wasn't clear. It became clear in the post where you said things have been slow. I knew you weren't going to divulge any info about yourself, I thought you were having an emo moment.

Face it, the forums died a lot after Hamster got banned. The only way to liven it up now is to start a big fight. Those seem to bring people out of the woodwork to jump into the fray.

    Any Goons still around?

  14. Feeling the need for some attention I see.

Since we're sharing: I was born on a mayonnaise farm.
  15. Hmm. I quietly turned mine off when we got the new boards, who knew I was supposed to make a post about it.

  16. D'oh!

    Maybe people

    want these?
  17. I'd try it.

That'd be novel, having a whole game to play at max level.

Golden_Girl is the one who bopped into every single forum posting one liners. Managed to get above 10,000 posts in something like 3 months.

MG, Golden_Girl went back to the EU forums.

I actually liked her posts. I can't be the only one, I'm probably just the only one that admits it. Her posts were short and to the point and often had dry Brit humor. Or maybe that's humour.

    [ QUOTE ]
    Or is that too extreme?

    [/ QUOTE ]

    Extreme is an understatement.

All Paragon Studios wants to do is keep as many players paying for a subscription to their game as long as possible. PLing characters to 50 in hours would seem to make players burn out much more quickly than if they had to play the game "as intended". That's why the Devs came down so harshly on AE farmers recently.

As long as you keep playing, they don't care how you play. The idea that they have a "vision" that goes beyond "keep people playing and paying for as long as possible" is ridiculous.

So no, the Devs aren't flagging your characters for later retributuion, and no, they aren't communicating with you through your fillings, and they aren't watching you from a closed-circuit video camera mounted in your closet.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I dunno, I don't buy that excuse of players burning out faster because they get PLed to 50. Maybe that's true for some people, but it can't be true for all people.

We don't ever hear about the players that never got near 50 but quit out of sheer boredom because of FedEx missions, and Kill 20 of these - Ok, now go kill another 20 of these missions, and running across another zone just to speak to someone who only sends you back to the guy that sent you to him in the first place missions, etc., etc. Just because we don't hear of those people doesn't mean they don't exist.

I think some people that get PLed to 50 on one character might be more inclined to try out a different AT and/or powersets. I think most of the people getting PLs are second or third accounts of old players. I think if players flock to a feature that allows their characters to be PLed the devs should look at the reasons behind it and do something about it. Maybe low level missions need to be cleaned up and streamlined like villain side. Maybe the low to mid levels need to be made more interesting so people want to play them.

And the reason I don't think the devs care how fast you reach 50 is because of all the changes to the game that have made leveling so much easier in general. XP changes, mission difficulty settings, combining inspirations, 2X XP weekends. If anything, players might be bored by how easy it's gotten in general.

You said it yourself MG, in the Isos thread, how fast this run is going to reach 50. We've had 14 play sessions and are up to level 44. 4 years ago how fast could you make it to 44? If people can play 3 hours a night for 3 weeks and get to 50, why is it so shocking that min/maxers can do it in AE in a day? Why is 3 weeks okay, but not one day?

    I16 Info

...because they're afraid they'll lose a major portion of their players to CO so they now are finding ways to do the things they said for 4 years couldn't be done?

edited to add a ? like the 2 posters before me, even though I think a . suffices

Am I the only one who thinks this is a bad idea? Beside the fact that we have pretty repetitive maps in the game right now, what about when GR hits and we (I'm hoping) get a large number of new maps? With a click you can just see the whole layout? Where's the mystery? The sense of discovery?

    [/ QUOTE ]

The more important question is: Where's your avatar?
  22. [ QUOTE ]
I wouldn't use it. I do know the layout of most maps, but I use the fog of war to show me where I've been. Remove that, and it'll be much harder to find that last hostage or glowie.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    That.

I'd rather have had a skip the first 10 levels on any new character badge. Or, unlock a new costume slot. Something I'd use anyway.
