Quote:I can Dig it.
From levels 1 to 20 the enhancement provides a chance to cause a small amount of additional damage. After level 20 this chance will no longer occur.
Small but not perma boost to entice newbies.
I can really dig it.
Advertising?! Hey I can dig that too! So what if it's Gamestop? <Does anyone still go there? Just checking...> -
Quote:I agree with all of this. Yes it is weird.Perhaps I'm living in a slightly different universe than you, but in what reality do game companies wait until less than 2 months before release to do aggressive advertising for their game?
Most games and expansions ramp up advertising well before that. Multiple interviews on as many sites as will have them. Banner ads all over the place(these should be going on for an MMO regardless of an expansion being near release or not). Taken a look at the The Old Republic website?
You hype stuff to make sales. Successful game companies and even terrible game companies do this because you want to draw attention to your product. You want people to constantly be in anticipation of what you are bringing. You want your game to be on the minds of potential customers all the time. You do not just sit on your *** and make a few website updates and then post a note about it on your own forums if you want to bring in sales.
Take a closer look at the game industry and how it works before you make statements like that. Bioware pushed Dragon Age so much that folks at Bluesnews and other gaming sites were talking about being sick of hearing about it.
The people on the forums aren't the ones who need to be reminded about COX...its all the other folks who haven't heard about it or who may not know enough about it to give it a try. Good grief...you realize that there are free to play MMOs that do more advertising than COX? That doesn't seem weird to you? -
Quote:This. The reason they're focusing on us appears to be that the game's marketing plan is all about retention, retention, retention. I wouldn't be surprised if someone, either at the Paragon Studios management level or above, has told the devs in no uncertain terms that growing the player base at this point and bringing in new players are next to impossible on the money available. If that's true (a debatable point), then the fact that the game is marketed only to people who already own it starts to seem logical.
Again, I don't know if bringing in new people really is impossible, but everything I've seen over the past year leads me to believe that Paragon/NCSoft/what have you believes it to be.
Oh, and I get the "feeling" the population is down from what it was a year or so ago, but that's all it is: a feeling. I'm much more concerned about the community's attitude, which has gotten noticeably more tempermental, closed, and unfriendly in the same period of time, in my opinion, than about raw population, however it's defined.
It sounds right on the money IMHO.
I guess the only thing that can really be done at this point is to continue supporting this game any way we can and just hope for the best. <Not a doom post> -

Seriously, if everyone is really concerned with the population, Then might I suggest a gentle push for advertising?

Quote:Advertising would get so many subscriptions that their tech support wouldn't be able to keep up <probably one reason they don't advertise>I could cry when I think of what CoH could accomplish with even a TENTH of Blizzard's advertising budget. *sighs forlornly*

aka
Samuraiko/Dark_Respite
The numbers of their subscriptions would increase, the money would start gushing in like a broken water main, the budget, the staff, everything would increase, and at last... so would the quality of the game.
...I can dream. -
Quote:I saw blizzards campus today...my question is :what happened to your marketing budget? this sounds like a cost cutting plan to me.
Don't get me wrong I love this game with all my heart.. but after seeing what blizzard actually HAS...oh god this "city of" dev team needs help in the worst way.
I mean that.
edit: Will some rich-off-their-gourd billionaire PLEASE give City of Heroes a stimulus package so they can at least TRY to advertise! -
Thank you for everything Kat. You nailed all of it.
This is a gentle push, not a fire war.
When GR is released and all the bugs have been ironed out, I feel that the next issue of this game should be focused on bases, and as much of that list as possible.
Pure win I tell you! -
Quote:This. You can bag on Castle for that as a representative of the company, but to blame him for the structural/managerial failings of the system is a bit of a stretch.
.
I personally feel that devs should never interact with the general public. There should be a public rep doing all the talking and going in between. Putting devs out in the field after unpleasant changes is just going to subject them to unnecessary abuse.
fortunately for us, Castle is made of awesome so he can take the heat. -
Its annoying.
oops did I just "whine" about something?!

Quote:I'm fine with whatever. I just want Virtue back up so I can edit my base. Yes, you are a glorious beacon of light. Embrace your destiny.I see this going 2 ways:
- Castle quietly accepts this and pushes a fix through "soon"
- Castle leaves it as is because he's mad at all the feedback and treats this like he did zone PVP. He ***** it up then ignores it.
EDIT: Yay I'm a glorious beacon of light! How do I freeze the rep system at this point? -
Quote:I hate to engage in "piling it on" but the thought process is perplexing to me.
With dozens of bugs introduced with the i17 launch, while working on one particular issue, the developer noticed an attribute that had been live for what, 3 years now, didn't match the design spec. At this point, 2 options seem to be
1) Make a note of this as something to be examined later, once the game is stabilized a bit more
2) Ram it in there with (seemingly) no regard to actual gameplay
And they went with 2)???
Now we hear "If needed (and judging by reactions, it probably is) I'll drop the protection some in a future update" so we're actually getting some weird hybrid of 1) and 2) above, the worst of both worlds.
Well, if anyone on Infinity or Virtue wants to run LGTF, I have a perma-dom on both servers that should be able to hold a green by themselves. I'll join for say, 10M per run, subject to change due to market conditions.
And how are you going to run anything on Virtue?
edit: Last I heard it was depressed. -

Quote:Might help if you knew everything about how it works before making changes. Would save you a-lot of grief. Not a clue. I'd have to ask the mission writer. I assume it works like a standard encounter, rather than like the Hamidon Zone Event, though.
Any idea on when Virtue will be playable? -
Quote:you said thats a work laptop eh?Well all, been a pretty fun four years most times, was nice to have something to ease my mind as I traveled and reported on u.s. military regulation issues around the world, once they sort themselves with this Not Optional optional UM I'll be back I hope.
All have fun, Good Hunting 2u!
had it for about two years eh?
*Institutes a session of mind control*
Ooopsie! Sorry someone knocked it off the table! Guess I will just have to Go get a new one so I can go play in Mr. H's Maze.

The idea behind my postings was to bring any and all info I could to the table,
Part of my troubleshooting teachings is, bring everything possible to the table. My oddball approaches at least cover the "way out there" theories and for the most part get them out of the way. To dispel my ideas on what is causing the problem doesn't make me upset, it simply helps single out everything until a solution is brought to light. I really hope it can be found soon.
I like the info that is being brought up regarding how i17UM is part of the game and only certain features can be disabled. Sounds like a step in the right direction for troubleshooting. There has got to be a bigger population that is experiencing this and not using the forums.
aside from that, I wish folks would stop tearing into each other. Personal attacks don't solve the problem. <Notice how I respond to personal attacks?>
Fab, what are those two tests please? -
good stuff. I learned something new! Thank you!
