I assume you mean 'mission' when you said 'act', here.

If the increasing of our slot filesize maximum is a forerunner to them one day increasing the allowable number of missions per slot, then when it happens you'll be in an enviable position. You'll then have a whole slew of 'new' arcs to play and enjoy, as the MAuthors of currently multi-slot arcs combine their disparate sections into one slot to free up their others for writing more stories. Their works will then fit into your classification of what 'a complete story' is, without having to change their narrative in any way at all.

    Everybody wins!

  3. Sorry I'm a bit lax again. RL issues and AION are sapping my time. Flu doesn't help, bleh.

Any more requests, I'd prefer limited to lvl 10-20 villainous arc for a while, please - VEI 8 seems to be ann easy Voice right now lol

    Killing pigs

Ooh. I had to rescue a (named) pig yesterday! It was an outdoor spawn, though, so I was fairly amused to see multiple 'clones' of it all being escorted the same route by other players too.

Ooh, yes, lol I was ranting and throwing my arms up the first time I played this map, and then when i found the sewer entrances, I had another little tantrum, because i entered sewer number 1, saw that it led up, exited and entered sewer number 2, and then did the same with sewer number 3. I spemnt ages trying to work out which one would be best to go up first! LMAO

  8. I have the flu, and so I'm a little hazy and hysterical, but i was just looking down the thread titles and saw aMarcian's thread calling the Loyalists to order, and I realised that GR has already (well before its release, even) given us a whole new facet of the game to play with.

Which made me do a little dance and have a little fanboy fit in my PC chair, as I'm wont to do rather worryingly frequently.

    Man, I love this game.

Well I only have experience with a month of WoW a few years ago, WAR for a week or so about a month ago, and now a week's worth of AION.

Oh, hang on, I also subbed to EvE for a year, too. I'd say 'I also played EvE...' but I didn't really, I just sat in my starter ship listening to EvE Radio and chatting to people lol.

But this bot thing was an eye-opener to me, honestly. /shudder If it ever happens in CoH...I'd be heartbroken, but I'd probably leave.

Why don't other games have this attitude? I am absolutely baffled by what other games' players will put up with. It's like they think it's normal.

I wish NCSoft would advertise CoH. It does everything so much better.

  10. This seems a good place to post a question I've been thinking about recently.

Does CoH have any sort of problem with Bots? I mean characters on some kind of auto-pilot, street-sweeping in order to level and collect inf without human attention.

I ask because Aion seems rife with them and it's the first time I've even heard that they exist.

If you want confusing, Marshal Brass has you entering the TV broadcasting building (one of many in a large outdoor map) to access the roof for one of your objectives.

From my perspective, that 'big prominent' building is hidden away in a corner. I'd say the other building to the right is more prominent - and it's even visible from the entrance point.

And in contrast, lol, I never had any difficulty with the TV building roof. It definitely sticks out from the other buildings in that map, and I didn't even know you could get up there via the door, as I've only used Flyers and SJers so far for that mission (Of course, now that I think about it it makes sense).

Just goes to show that what's obvious to some is not to others - all the more reason to inform in advance about such things, and to do so in ways which hopefully aren't jarringly hand-holding to those Players who already know there's a door there, or an objective here, or what have you.

I think it's because it's easy to miss the actual mission in canon that uses it. I first found it when i was designing a mission for The Audition. Ironically, that map would have been perfect for what I had in mind, but it needed a glowie to spawn, and the glowie just wouldn't, in test. Of course, i was only running around the outdoor bit; the glowie was very probably spawning every time inside the building.

I'm not certain, but I can only think of three outdoor maps that contain an indoor section too OTTOMH - that one, the WB one (I think its WB?), and the Shadow Shard Nemesis base one (Which has a waypoint leading to its door I believe, so it might be considered different). Perhaps a lot of people try clicking doors in outdoor maps for their early outdoor instances, and then stop bothering after three or four make them erroneously assume that ALL outdoors are like that.

  13. I think he was possibly using 'lampshade' in its nore general sense, not referring necessarily to cliche or the need for self-denigration. A bit too fond of tvtropes, imo.

I think he just means to suggest what i also noticed when i played it, that some players (like me lol) dont kbow tgat building can be entered and so there needs to be sth that informs the player that it needs to be explored too. You can be overt with this or 'lampshade' it subtly. 'leave no door unopened!' might be too subtle, i'd personally put it straight to the player, 'check the buildings at tge site too'

  14. Ah, I see. Out of interest, if the Devs upped the number of missions allowable for one slot, let's say to 10 for example, and then people were able to combine their previously multi-slot arcs into one slot, would you consider such an arc as complete?

The Audition's unlikely to get a Venture Review, then.

Which is a shame (well, as far as I'm concerned anyway); I am intrigued by what you would think of it.

    Still, can't be helped, eh?

If I ever get around to designing an MMO (and I hope to do so, look for it around November 2035), here is my big list of designer commandments.

    1. Make the player feel special, powerful and IMPORTANT.
    2. Playing in groups should be encouraged, and players should WANT to play in groups, but grouping should never be REQUIRED.
    3. Never put a brick wall between a player and his real life friends. If two characters want to play together, they should be able to, level and skill differences be damned.
    4. At the level cap the player should feel more powerful than 80% of the foes in the game.
    5. Customization should only be as deep as a player wants it to be. If they want to tweak every nuance of their character, let them. But if they just want to forget about customization and play, also let them.

I might think of more, but these five are a good start.

    Definitely.

And 5 things I've realised this week that CoH already does that other MMOs should do if they want me to sub:

    1. Knockback with ragdoll animation. My MA scrapper is just so much fun. No matter how impressive a game's attack animations are, or how awesome its sound effects are, having the mob stay in exactly the same position/pose for the entire fight going through the same 'being hit' reaction animations isn't good enough. Seeing a mob get punted across a room to dangle over a bannister absolutely adds to the immersion and sense that I'm in a 'realistic' world. But far more importantly, it makes me giggle like a loon and it's just frankly AWESOME.

    2. Collision detection. I'll never complain about being pushed out of the way by a civvie or getting stuck behind an MMs minions again. If CoH didn't have collision detecytion, we'd all be in a weird 'phased' state and be able to overlap each other, and mobs too, and that would look and feel wrong.

    3. Extensive narrative delivery. Briefings, entry popups, clues, dialogue, more clues, bio fields for mobs, objects, glowies, allies, hostages, escorts, more clues, exit popups, system messages, and more clues allow so much actual story to be told. "Hey, $Heroname, go over there and defeat 20 Hellions, because they're [doing something bad]', followed by the killquest, followed by "Well done, $heroname, here's your inf!' everytime with precious little other story would steal much of the goodness from CoH for me.

    4. Instances. I am so glad that when i first encountered Frostfire, it wasn't in an open-space non-instance with dozens of other heroes wandering in and out, some on my team, some solo, some on another team. I remember that first Frostfire mission I did. There were 6 of us. Just us. It was fantastic. And when we got to the last room, there he was, Frosty, and his minions, in that room alone, waiting for us. I'm so glad we didn't have to wait for a group to finish him off and leave, and then wait for another minute for him to respawn for our go. I know that somewhere else in the Hollows there's another team beating up Frostfire when I'm doing it, but I don't have to watch them, do I?

    5. Varied objectives. I wasn't here for CoH's launch, so I can't comment on what was available then, but now, look what we can do! Defeat X of mob Y is here, a staple of MMOs since the dawn of time, but they're in a minority, I'll tentatively claim. We can Clear All, Click the Glowie/s, Defeat, Rescue, Escort or simply Free someone, we can Smash things up, Go On Patrol, Explore, and Rob Banks or Stop Them Being Robbed. We can Go Skiing, MAKE OUR OWN QUESTS, marketeer and craft if we want to, and we can even swap our spandex for a tux for when we need to Attend a Diplomatic Party. In fact, about the only thing I can't do in CoH...is kill pigs.

  17. See, it's this kind of stuff makes me wish i could suddenly grow to the size of King Kong, and then rampage politely around the major cities of the world shouting 'They made us a WALK toggle! Now stop playing all the other crap MMOs, dammit, and come join us'

Why did they do that? They didn't need to do that, did they? It's getting like I want to say 'Stop giving us stuff all the damn time!'

It's like a cornucopea of QoL, lately, this game.

    Awesome.

  18. Bubba - I'm in agreement with extending the deadline for any categories you see fit. More plays for everyone is only a good thing IMO.

  19. Let's not rub Venture's face in it too much, people. It's just one more viewpoint he has among the many expounded here. There's room for all sorts in the world of MArc-writing, and when GR goes live I for one will applaud his ingenuity and self-control in keeping any future arcs he makes strictly under 100kb, even if i don't quite understand why he should want to do so.

    Ah, cool.

Yes. it is indeed a loosley connected series of vignettes. I intended it to be akin to one of those 'anthology' movies that were vaguely popular in the 60s and 70s. (albeit they were in the horror genre).

    Glad you had fun anyway.

  24. Totally agree with you Sam. I'm trying AION atm, and it's relly getting on my wick tbh. Getting killed by a single pig makes me want to smash my monitor to bits. Getting killed by a single mushroom that comes up to my knee made my instantly ragelog. I don't understand why on earth anyhone actually wants to fight something like Reichsmann in the Khan TF. What an awful, painful, slow, repetitive trudge. As far as I'm concerned. Other folk like it, and more power to them, as long as i don't have to do it.

Difficulty sliders are just basically awesome; they cater for every approach. My only mild gripe is that the difficulty doesn't go down enough (with an equivalent frop in rewards, to nil).

Exactly. I don't know why other games dont have this metric, tbh. Giving us

    a. the ability to easily defeat one even con mob and
    b. the ability to outrun aggroed mobs pretty easily

sort of guarantees a non-annoying start to the game.

CoH has ruined me for other MMOs.

Aion is gorgeous tho, i'll give it that.
