  1. Wow. Necro'd threads ftw!

As long as this is back on the first page, I'd like to agree with the (probably) 50+ people who said they only want the ability to use NPC skins on their pets.

Give us 3 options. Per set. Easy as.. well, I have no idea. But it eliminates the coding for custom costumes and colors and genders and animations. NPCs already have all of that.

Here's some very quick ideas, which I'm sure have been posted somewhere in this thread.

    Mercs
    Basic (as is)
    Longbow
    Malta

    Thugs
    Basic (as is)
    Freakshow
Hellions (or Skuls or Outcasts... you get it)

    Bots
    Basic (as is)
The steampunk guys (drawing a blank on the name)
    Clockwork

    Undead
    Basic (as is)
Vasil...Vasilo... Vasilo.. however you spell it
And there's one set of undead that run around on blue side in the teens. I always forget to take note of the enemy group, but every time I see them, I think to myself "DANG! If my zombies looked like that - with the army helmets and stuff - that would be awesome!"

    Ninjas
    Basic (as is)
    Honestly... I have no idea.

    Demons
    Basic (as is)
    The demons...
    Imps

Wow, that is a very incomplete list. Sorry

But, more to the point, every one of those NPC models already has the animations needed for the attacks current minions get. Most also have minor costume variations within the set, that would allow for the "upgrades" to be placed on them similar to how they are now.
  2. The only thing edited in the first post was the addition of the data chunk from mids. Last line in the post includes what I edited.

Sadly, this has not gone where I had hoped it would. It seems that while a few people know that you can a) be perma before 50 and b) that it does not in fact require purples and billions of inf to do, all of the players I have come across in the game did not know.

When I started this thread it was because I was looking at doms in the light that they are expensive as heck to build (requiring more money than I would ever willingly spend on any character) and that they really didn't shine until 50. I enjoy playing my characters before 50, and so both of these supposed facts turned me off.

I had however, set out to find answers for myself and not solely rely on what people who have been playing this game for years and years had told me. I wanted to see if I could perma (a milestone for most doms) below 50. This would immediately eliminate the purple sets that I will not pay for (I'm cheap) and allow me to have more fun earlier.

In my search, I found that yes indeed, I could perma before 50. I could do it with sets that I AM willing to purchase / work for and I came here to share that because no one else ever did that I could find.

Like I have explained before, many of the links to guides are outdated or simply broken. It is beyond frustrating trying to find good, solid, relevant sources of compiled information about some combos and even some ATs in this game. Don't believe me? Take a peak at the CoHwiki article on Dominators:

    http://cityofheroes.wikia.com/wiki/Dominator

It doesn't even mention IO sets in the part about getting Domination to recharge faster.

While I did not write a guide, I did make a post that shows people who are new, or new to doms, or simply mis-informed that you can do this - that Doms are not the inf sink that many people claim them to be. Are they cheap? Well, they can be. Do they "perform well on just SO's"? Not really, but then, "performs well on SO's" is subjective and frankly, most ATs don't "perform well on just SO's" enough to suit most people.

After the first few responses, I was not very happy that I had made this thread. Now, I'm glad I did. I have had a few inquiries via PM asking me if I can make a build for a x/x dom similar to the one I did. I usually decline and remind people that I have very little experience with doms. Mostly due to the fact that everyone I knew believed they were an inf sink.

Not everyone is a Mid's genius. Not everyone knows which sets cost how much money. Not everyone understands the mechanics of this game (illustrated in this thread). But almost everyone can look at someone who said "Look what I did! And here's how I did it" and follow along well enough to get the point.

We're lacking in good, relevant information on these forums in the form of guides. Not only that, but our wiki is outdated and needs some love. I fail to see why someone wants to argue about something that really leaves nothing to argue about. I said I made a perma-dom at 36. I said I was told I needed purples and level 50 by people who have been playing this game for years to make this happen. The guide I read was outdated and didn't include half of the sets that made this build possible. And all of this is true.

So while this has not gone like I wanted it to, some good still came of it.

Thanks to all of those who actually read the post and were perhaps inspired to do something that "everyone they know" said couldn't be done.

    Cheers!

*Edit: I posted this, the realized I neglected to explain what I mean by "Diet". Dur - I'm kind of slow sometimes lol.

Diet = Playing the market, but playing it on a very narrow and focused scale or section. It is not so much playing the market as it is playing item(s) within the market.

I like playing the market. I have ever since I financed myself to happiness in WoW. I found a couple of nice niches there and rode them til they dropped dead, then kicked 'em a bit, and rode em some more.

    However...

In CoH, there is very little in this game that is of "no value". Almost everything on the market is worth something to someone. Obviously there are certain pieces of salvage and recipes that are in higher demand, but there seems to be a conspicuous lack of "junk". Or rather, the actual "junk" is so small I have failed to notice it.

I have been coming to these forums since about week 3 of my playing the game. There are a couple of things that I notice:

    a) The people on these forums are generally very friendly and helpful

    and

    b) The marketeers not only talk about what they buy, how they make their money, and what they do to get to obscene amounts of money, they actually post guides about how to do it!

This got me thinking.. well, I've been thinking, and now I'm acting on those thoughts(?) So... this got me... acting. Anyways, I have some questions to ask, and so much of me is appalled that I'm even asking someone to give away secrets... it really does bother me, but I'm stuck.

I want to be a "Diet Ebil Marketeer". And I'm hoping someone here can help.

    ****
I have now re-written this portion of my post 3 times. I have decided to explain what I did in WoW, as it is very similar to what I would like to do here.

There was an item in WoW called a Relic of Ulduar. They stacked up to 200. I would purchase any and all of these for anything less than 1 gold each. Stack size was not relevant to me. A single piece or a full stack. I bought it all. I would then save up the lots, break them into piles of 10, and sell the stack of 10 for 20g. At a minimum, this was a 100% profit (less fees) that took nothing more than a bit of my bag space.

During that time, I also learned how to create artificial shortages and overages. See! I can be Ebil! If I was heavy on product and it wasn't moving, I'd simply up my purchase limit to 1.75ea and clean out the market. This still allowed for a (very) small profit, but then mine were generally the only ones available. If I was starting to get short on product, or if the base prices were climbing too high, I would flood the market with the 600 or so I kept in reserve, selling these for the 1g min I had purchased them for. It cost me a little, but in the end, I pretty much had this very, very small portion of the market covered.

When all was said and done, I had made an estimated 75,000 gold off of this item (I lost some data and had to "guestimate" a chunk of the total) during the 12 months that I played that item. I started by pooling all of my money in that game at the time, and I mean ALL of it. I started with about 800 gold.

My base rules for marketeering were:

Never buy for more than X if you don't have to.
Never allow items to sit there for under your base purchase price. Overstock is OK. There is no warehouse rent.
Never sell for less than your fixed price.
Never sell for more than your fixed price. (I'll explain this in a minute)

I would never get "greedy" and jack the price on my items. I always listed for the same amount for 2 reasons: 1) I was the largest volume seller of that item - I can price fix if I want and 2) I kept my minimum purchase price the same. If you drive up the price too far, you'll never be able to buy them for what you used to and at some point, someone is going to figure out that its just not worth it anymore, and you're stuck with a TON of items you paid WAY too much for.

There was a question... wasn't there? Oh yes... here it is.

After showing you kind, wonderful, amazing folks how I prefer to operate, I would LOVE some suggestions on items that this can/could/is being done with.

I'm 4 months into this game and frankly, the market is too big for me to master in any meaningful time. I still have only a vague idea about what is "good", what is "bad" and what is selling for the right price.

If anyone can help me out, that would be fantastic! If everyone is reading this and saying to themselves - "This one's off the rocker, I'm not giving up my niche!" Please don't! I don't want to take away anyone's perfect niche. I'm just having a ridiculous time finding mine.

I also understand that there are some serious limits imposed in this game that will not allow something exactly like what I was doing in WoW. There are no "stacks" to buy. Auctions are limited in space (it was not uncommon for me to have 200 auctions going for days at a time in WoW). And personal storage space is like 1/10th of what I was using in WoW, but I am positive there is something in this game that I can do something very similar with.

I just can't seem to find it.

    HALP!

Thanks a million to anyone who actually read all of this. Thanks a million and a half to anyone who has advice! And thanks a bunch to anyone who has a niche, makes great money and is keeping their mouth shut (at least to me). I can appreciate it when you find something good and you want to keep it. I don't blame you one bit!

Well, Hasten is not always up. This is true. I'm not building a perma-hasten build, which takes quite a bit more recharge to make happen. But you don't need perma hasten to have perma dom. However, if you do have perma hasten, you will always have perma dom, so that's a plus.

Based on the math that Brev did in this thread (linky again) that I linked in the first post you need about 125% global recharge to be perma:

    Quote:
So we need some extra +Recharge Boosts to 'top-up' what Hasten is providing us; in fact we need an average +Recharge boost of about +125% (allowing a second or so overlap). The nice thing of course is that the more additional +Recharge we get, the faster Hasten recharges too, so the more often its +70% will be in effect.

The build has 138.8% with hasten up. Hasten will have about a 20 second down time, which also fits well within Brev's time frame for "worst case scenario" where Domination comes up right as hasten expires.

The math part, for those who are into that, and can follow it, is HERE.

The build is perma, and by more than a few micro seconds.

It is however, close enough that if you aren't paying attention, and just mashing buttons you can artificially increase the recharge time on hasten and have dom drop.

    @Talen Lee and @Pitho:

While I have never managed a full build for 20 mil, I do feel I get them for a lot less than most people. If you work out a build ahead of time, say before your character hits 10. Then actually play the character, and not have it PL'd to 50, you can spread the purchasing of IO sets you know you will want out over the course of your leveling.

I know quite a few people who slot w/e until they hit 50. Then they go to the market, spend an hour buying things to fill all 91-94 slots at "buy it now!" prices. These people will almost always pay quite a bit more than anyone with some patience.

Another thing to note is that level 35 enhancements provide nearly identical numbers as level 50 enhancements when slotting sets. This also usually applies when you are frankenslotting for max effect. Is the level 50 IO set better? Across a whole build, sure - by a very very tiny amount.

With this in mind, you can open up your purchase window from 50 only, to 35-50. This gives you 15 more levels of product to work with. And when you're talking about procs, almost every single proc is identical at every level of enhancement. Some enhancements cost less at 50. Those you can wait on if you're short on cash.

In addition, perma isn't now and never has been the end all be all. Some people played dominator's because they were fun.

Read much? Or just jump in and spout what you feel for the world to bask? Way to miss the point that a) You don't NEED purples and b) you don't NEED to be 50 to be perma.

Quoting the other part you missed in your careful reading:

    Quote:
The proposed build is not "cheap". A lot of the sets used are in high demand due to the +recharge bonuses. They can sometimes cost more than purple sets at 50 (I bought a whole set of purple confuse for a plant/ controller for 50mil for example). However, this build is significantly cheaper than a build with 3 or more sets of purples.
Seems that I never said this was a OMGsocheapyoucanbuilditwithSOs build, did I?

And yes, while some people play Dominators because they were fun, this doesn't mean that Dominators haven't gotten a bad rep for being expensive to build to effective levels. Some people play petless masterminds because they're "fun" for them. It still doesn't wipe away the bad rep.

THIS is a link to a thread going on the front page of this forum. See the 1st response. The general assumption is that a) you need to spend a boat-load on your dom and b) that you can't begin the actual build for it until you get to 50.

In fact, you yourself in this very same thread suggest that the person make a brute... because Doms are only good for +2 (I assume you mean x2 as you said the brute could be +8). And you're here jumping over me about... what exactly?

Actually... I am fairly puzzled with what your exact problem is with my post? You think this information should not be shared? You think that only people who are... nope. Can't come up with anything. Do you just feel the need to argue?

But hey, thanks for your 2 cents. Next time, try reading for comprehension before telling someone off.

    @SimonSayz

I think when these people told you this info, it was generally true before the dom changes when domination became a break free + endurance recovery power. Nowadays, You really don't even need domination if you play smart. Heck, you didn't need it before the changes either. These people that told you this must have been the typical fire/psi farmers of old that got their builds from other people.
I haven't been playing that long. Yet, everything I have ever seen or heard, says that you do need to spend a ton on your dom to be effective. This is not true, and yet this is the information that is being spread.

I am giving concrete evidence that someone can potentially have what others consider to be "effective" long before 50 and without the heavy investment in purples.

Maybe someone, who is like me, will come here, read this thread and see that they can in fact play the dom they wanted to play for fun and not have to wonder if they picked an AT that requires huge amounts of inf to be good only at level 50.

Most people either go with the setup you describe, or drop one of the porter rooms in favor of a 2x2 medbay. (I don't know about you, but there are hazard zones that I visit very rarely, so having space for 20 zones isn't too much of a hardship.)

    BTW, aren't there 22 blue-side zones now that there's a beacon to Pocket D?
After looking at it, I do believe I am going to go with the 8x12 set up. This allows for future expansion with a med bay and a workshop. These last two items are to be added "some time" later and are in no way a priority.

I found that the 9 2x2 rooms is nice for staying on an 8x8 but the 8x12 wasn't terribly expensive and allowed me to have more "functionality" in terms of how I arrange things. The smaller room (3 porters, 6 beacons) will have the beacons for the 6 common zones used in TFs and Trials at lower levels when I tend to not have travel powers (I use ninja run a lot). It also frees me up from having to remember which of the 6 rooms that have porters in them go where I want to go. 2 Rooms makes life much easier for me

Been scratching my head on this one.. how do I smash all of this on an 8x8?

Most effective use of teleport bays are 5x5 and 3x3. Also need the 2x2 entrance, the 2x2 energy room, and the 1x4 control room.

I've been doing some crappy sketches of my own.. and can't seem to hash this out. There's no way (that I can see) to get the 5x5 and the 3x3 on the same 8x8. The corners touch. Am I missing something here?

Assuming I drop back to the 3x4's to make them fit, I now need 3 to get all 12 in.

Are we assuming 2x2's here? I "think" I can get enough 2x2's to work on an 8x8 plot (9 total - 1 nrg - 1 control - 1 entry - 6 teleport) which would give me 11 porters (1 room with only 1). Is this what you guys were thinking? My brain is all mushy now
  8. Ahhh, Perma-Dom. The "ultimate" experience for any dominator. One that most people can't afford because they're really expensive.

    Or so I was told.

It is at Perma-Dom levels that the dominator becomes enjoyable.

    Or so I was told.

When you can get to 50 (or at least 47) and can slot purplez, then your dominator will be awesome!

    Or so I was told.

"Is that dom perma? - No... lawl, he doesn't even have any purple set bonuses!"

"How much recharge does it take to get perma anyways? - A LOT! 3-4 purple sets for sure. Prolly lots of LotG procs too."

    Or so I was told.

All of the above are what have effectively kept me from playing a Dominator. All of the above are completely false.

    Now you've been told.

Not only do you absolutely NOT need any purple sets at all to make your dominator perma, you don't even need to be 50. Or 47. Or even 40*. I was disgruntled that I was going to have to wait 47+ levels for a character I wanted to create to finally be "fun". So I hopped into Mids and decided to see just how much inf it was going to cost me once I hit 50 to make my next project fun. Surprisingly, not any more than I would spend on any other character. Also, very surprisingly to me, I didn't even need to be 50.

At levels below 50, nearly all dominators can be perma. It requires taking hasten (duh). And occasionally 1 or 2 powers are not "optimally" slotted, but then again, who's powers are all 100% "optimally" slotted? For the most part, I try to avoid mules (slotting a power for an effect you wouldn't normally slot it for just for set bonuses), and I feel I succeeded with my build (for the most part).

Between Mid's and the guide about perma-dom in this forum ( LINK ), I was able to make a Plant/Fire (my choice) that was perma at 36. The single caveat to this build is the LotG proc you should use (1 in combat jumping). This single proc can either be purchased off the market, or if you prefer, you can do 5 tip missions a day while you level (staying a villain) and have one for yourself in 4 days (technically its 6 days, as your first morality mission gives reward merits and not alignment merits).

For anyone looking to play a Dominator, but fearing that they require billions of inf and 50 levels of "un-fun" play, I say "LET THE MASSES BE DARNED! Go forth! Make ye the king of Domination! Then show up at 37 for the ITF and cackle with glee when you tell the non-believers that you're PERMA BABY!"

    Notes:

Purple sets are not bad. The +ACC and +Recharge you get from 5 slotting them goes a long way in loosening up a build.

Perma-dom is not for every build. Some of the sets benefit more from perma, some less. YMMV.

*Not all sets can be perma-dom by 36. Some take a few more levels.

Below is the build I used (am using) for my plant/fire to be perma-dom at 36. I may just keep him at that level - who knows!?

A couple of notes on the build:

The stealth proc in SS is a personal choice. I like being able to line up Seeds of Confusion without getting blasted.

Endurance should not be an issue, even with stamina 2-slotted. With Domination coming up less than every 90 seconds and consume available every 65-70 seconds, you'll have plenty of opportunities to reclaim endurance.

If I proceed to level past 36, Creepers will be slotted for damage instead of a single recharge. Health will also be dropped to 3 slots. Other minor tweaks will also happen, but for the most part, the powers are slotted the way I will have them at 50.

I hope this helps some folks who are wanting to play a Dominator, but are holding back due to some very incorrect publicity on how much they cost are how much work they are to get to a "fun" level.

Edit: Added the data chunk from Mid's - not sure why that didn't export the first time... hmmm.

    Porters... help!

    Perfect! Thank you!

Any idea about which plot size this will all fit on? Prestige costs are not especially an issue as I am willing to farm up whatever I need.

And it looks like I will be remaking 2 of the porters. I dropped 2 as "temporary" solutions for now.

Thank you so so so much!

  10. Misaligned

    Porters... help!

I have recently begun playing blue side a lot more. I even started my own very small SG! Yay me... lol.

Blue side is frustrating and tedious to get around. Teleporters seem to be a decent solution. I have the oro portal. That's not even remotely close to enough. Using RWZ as a hop between is also not enough. I needs me some porters! >.<

Many many... many searches later, I have been able to figure out about 1/4th of what I need to know to make this happen. I'm hoping you folks can help!

Anywho... on to the question. I am interested in getting a teleporter to every zone. I have a base. I know how to make the pads (I have already made 10 - extras ftw!) and I even have all of the beacons! What I need to know is the following:

What is the absolute minimum set-up I need to get these things up and running? I currently have the "small" control room - which is enough to power 2 whole teleporters... I would love to know which rooms I need (minimum), which power/control units I need to supply for best effect, and what lot size I can fit all of this on.

The base needs absolutely no other function than travel. I have a red side base that covers all of my storage needs (because red side doesn't need the travel ). So adding "such and such" room for any reason other than I need it to get teleporters aren't needed.

If my searching has been misdirected and someone can point me to a guide that a) is current enough to make sense b) doesn't show you how to make 800 superfluous rooms "just because" and c) Has a working link, I would love to read it.

    Thanks again!
  11. Well, I rolled up a Plant/TA controller after all. Its fun! But slooooooooooow. I'm currently at 18, and finally doing enough damage that the confused NPCs aren't stealing all of my xp. Its great fun on a team, and very safe, but like I said, up until this point, its been horribly slow.

I don't have the vet powers that a lot of people use to get by at the early levels, so I am stuck with the basic attacks. I could have went with 2 pool power attacks, but opted to go for SS and stealth so I could more easily line up the SoC off the bat. This leaves me with a ST immob, a ST hold, and an AoE immob as my attack chain... yay? In 8 more levels I will get the creepers and that should help out some, though not a bunch. Also, by that point IOs tend to have nearly the same bonuses as "end game", so I should be hitting harder with my few attacks.

I had asked earlier about the XP loss from confuse. Thank you for the link showing the bell curve on damage. However, that tends to be a double edged sword. I now know that for the majority of my levels that I have been doing only a very tiny amount of the overall damage (often as low as 10% of the total) to 2 out of 3 of the bad guys. I altered my play style a bit and saw some better returns, but it still wasn't fantastic. I am now finally to the point where confuse doesn't wear off during every fight. That was irritating...

On a side note, since the Plant/ attacks are in general very low on damage (in relation to other ATs for example), I found that I had horrible End problems. I would often run myself dry (with no toggles running at all) trying to kill a lone Lt or Boss. Eating blues because you don't have the end to kill an even level Lt. ftl (see #11 on my list).

All in all, I do wish I had gone Plant/Fire dom or at least Plant/(something) dom as the damage output from lower level Plant Controllers comes mostly from the NPCs killing each other. Adding in the debuffs from TA will definitely increase their ability to kill each other faster, but that starts to become detrimental to XP gain once again.

I will most likely roll a plant/* dom some time in the near future. I think that may fit my bill for what I am looking for a bit more closely than this controller does. Not having domination up 100% of the time won't be as much of an issue, as it will be immensely faster than this controller, and I won't feel I "need" domination to get by.

Thanks once again for the all of the input!
  12. My experience is limited, but here's my 2 cents:

With claws having an 8 foot radius on spin - same as burn - you have a decent synergy there. You burn, spin, re-burn as new mobs move in to take the place of the ones you just roasted. It seems like it would work well. However..

With SS, you will have a much happier time against the enemies that feel the need to stand 9 feet away and laugh at your burn patch while they plunk you with their ranged attacks.

I have an Axe/ brute and there is a lot of frustration in knowing that I could kill this pile of bad guys 4 times faster if they'd just come 2 feet closer.

This is one of the main reasons why I chose SS for my latest brute. A 15' AoE makes my life much simpler. Also, its not a cone. Cones are nice - unless something decides that it really wants to be behind you... or the pile you have lined up in front of you decides that they want to spread out more... or you accidentally hit the cone as something dies, you target Bob the bad guy standing out in left field all by himself with no one around him.

My suggestion is SS. Burn the close ones, stomp the far away ones and giggle with glee as they all fall down.
  13. All of these great suggestions! Thank you all!

So... from what I have read, I am thinking of:

    SoA

    and

    Plant/(something)

    Now, for more specific questions:

Best pairing for a plant/* controller? I like the idea of TA debuffing the enemy so they can kill each other faster. Plant/Storm seems.. interesting. Possibly a close second if not tied with /TA for helping the baddies kill each other faster. Any other suggestions?

Plant/* doms. I always feel like I should be struggling for perma-dom with any dom. Its nice to feel all-powerful when domination is up, then to have it drop and be all

Is Plant/* different from that with the confuse aspect? Is domination nice, but not a deal breaker like it is in some sets?

    SoA's:

Man... where do I begin. I've had the ability to make one for about 3 months (still new to the game). I have yet to make one. They seem... daunting when trying to figure out what I want to do with them. Above we had votes for a dual spec Soldier AND a dual spec Widow. That's 5 possible builds and I'm back to square one wondering what one is best for me. I suppose either could be great, and they probably are... but where to start?! ACK!

If someone would be willing to post a level 30-ish build for either one with no slotting (just powers, I can figure out slotting), that would be spectacular! It would give me an idea of what I will be shooting for. And yes, I am aware that they cannot get the specialized powers until 24 and at that point you must respec.

Also, any other sets that haven't been mentioned that might be a good fit?

    Thanks again!
  14. Thanks everyone for the great ideas! Keep them coming please!!!

Use Roots to keep the mobs bunched up (and to do AoE damage) so they kill themselves faster. Slot Strangler and Entangle for single target damage. As you level you add more powers that make the mobs damage them selves even faster, Acid Arrow at level 20, Carrion Creepers at level 26, Disruption Arrow at level 28, Oil Slick Arrow at level 35 (remember to make your origin magic or tech so you can light your own Oil Slick with your origin starter power). Going Fire Epic adds even more damage to the mix. My Plant/TA/Fire solo farmss on +2 or +3/8x. When I finish purpling it out I'll be solo farming at +4/8x.
This looks interesting - does the xp loss from confused enemies balance out with the fact that you can kill more of them in an hour? (for example)

    Dark/ ... /Dark
My bad here, I should have mentioned it... 2 of my MMs are dark, and I have a rad/dark corr that I rolled up 100% as a support toon for TFs. Kinda darked out right now lol. Though I will agree that its a fantastic set!

Please please please keep the ideas coming!
  15. I want to make something new. I have been pondering this for like a week now, and can't come up with anything. Mostly I think this is due to my lack of experience.

After reading these boards for a while, I think I can answer most of the questions that will be asked of me. Here goes!

1 - I am not married to any AT. If the AT can fit what I'm looking for, great!

2 - I am not a "melee only" or "range only" person. I have both kinds of characters, and like both styles of play. I do not mind sets that combine both.

3 - I solo some. I group some. I do TFs some. I don't do any of these more than the others. So the sky's the limit here.

4 - I prefer to be "durable enough". They need to die before I do. While this is not usually an issue for any AT and most any level, but if I need to stand around and wait for rest to come back up all of the time, I'm too squishy. This can be accomplished with either massive damage (they die before I'm hurt too badly) or solid defenses. Or a mix of both.

5 - I would like something that's fun to level... at all levels (or at least past 10). "Zomg, X/X is SO awesome after 38 when you get Y!!!!" doesn't cut it. If I have to wait forever for a combo to mature, I'd rather not play it. I already play a few sets that are like that. SR namely... and I would prefer to stay away from them.

6 - I like sets that are "interesting". Ice control on a dom is fun for me. Its not entirely what I was looking for, for it is still great fun to have things like AA and IP. Cackling about what I am doing to the enemy is a huge plus!

7 - Anything that "get's really good with IO sets" isn't my idea of fun either - basically you're waiting until 32 or so to start with that, and even then, you'll never experience all of the "joy of the set" until you're closer to 50 and have enough slots to get to that magical IO set fun. (see #5)

8 - I like MMs (this was suggested by a friend) but I have 3 already. They need some love before I make a 4th.

9 - I do not have GR - so no DP or Elec control for me being dirt poor sucks.

10 - I prefer AoE to ST damage. I have an EM/Regen stalker, and while it is definitely fun to smash things to death one after another, I find that ST isn't really "my thing".

11 - Damage is a BIG plus. If I can live forever, but it takes me 5 minutes to kill a group of 3 minions, I'll probably fall asleep at the wheel.

12 - KB doesn't turn me off. It doesn't turn me on so much either... but its not "forbidden". In fact, I have been looking at various Storm/ or /Storm combos. Nothing has caught my eye yet.

13 - Any Power set that revolves solely around a single power is not much fun for me. I need a little variety and spice in my life. Spamming 1 button over and over and over and over is lame. If I want that, I'll go back to playing WoW.

14 - There are over 630 possible combinations of powers in this game. That is not including the EATs or the GR power sets. That' a LOT of sets to look through. I'm looking for your experiences and suggestions about something you thought was a blast to play out of the gate! (PS, I have a WS. He's fun - and gets some love from me when I am feeling ambitious).

Thanks in advance for all of the help!!
  16. Hmmm...

Now I'm intrigued. I do enjoy mashing things in the face. AoE is a definite must for me - I just can't get into the ST toons... yet.

I have a fire/kin corr that I mess around with in the low 30's. He's a blast in a team - Buffing everyone, RoF, Fireballs... its a great looking set. Still fun solo, but he's missing some key solo powers in favor of buffs at this point. Probably time for a respec trial...

Being relatively new to the game, I am very much used to a set having 2 or 3 powers that are the majority of the oomf behind it. A fire/kin troller looks to me (from what I'm reading here) that almost every primary power you take contributes (nearly) equally to the damage you deal. This would be a new play style for me. Perhaps I'll give it a shot.

    Thanks again!
  17. Awesome! Thanks!

Don't know if I can live with that. I guess if I want pets I'll stick with my MM
  18. So...

I see lots and lots of fire/kin farming machine threads. I also see "fire/kin r teh best farmerz evah" comments in various places - and out of curiosity, I looked into building one. I generally do multiple builds in Mid's before I ever make a toon. I figure an hour spent in Mid's saves me days of playing something I might just hate.

    Anyways... on to the question:

I'm not seeing the damage. Where is it? I did a build where I cranked up FS and slotted everything for damage (think of it as a "max possible bursty") build because I just wasn't seeing it. Then I came to the forums and looked at about 2 bazillion builds for fire/kins. I read strategies and all that, and yet, I cannot seem to wrap my brain around where the damage comes from in this set. Is it 99% imps? Is it all procs? Is there a hidden "i win" button that pop up when you hit 50 that can't be duplicated in Mid's?

I surrender in my search and ask you, the all-knowing forum folks, where the heck does the damage to melt +4/x8 come from in a fire/kin?

(And please don't say FS. I know FS increases damage dramatically, but 4 times crap is still pretty much crap).

Hopefully someone can enlighten this confuzzled old brain of mine.

    Thanks!
  19. Thank you both very much for your replies

So far we have a high def build that gives up some recharge and damage (some damage loss through recharge times) and a build that's all about blowing things from here to kingdom come!

Feel free to keep posting builds folks! The more ideas the merrier!

Care to post the build you use? I'm looking for something different here. (See first post)

    Thanks!

    Quote:
By the way, in mids you can uncheck footstomp after putting in FF proc, so that the recharge is not counted.
Hmmm. Never noticed that before. Thanks!
  21. As requested, here is the build I currently have in place for this guy. I have added 2 purple sets to it (from my previous post), so its not exactly what I am running now, but its pretty dang close. (Those 2 sets being the only exception).

The empty slot in foot stomp is for a force feedback proc. I leave it out when making the build because it skews mids too much with it having 100% up time.

Once again, I say have at. If you want to re-hash this build, go for it. If you want to make something completely new, that would be fantastic!

Re: Travel powers. Super jump is currently a mule and a convenience. I have ninja run and use that a my travel power on many of my toons. I have no qualms about giving up super jump on this guy if you can find something better.

    Thanks again!

Also, before someone points it out - this build shows no accolades. This is not the case (I have them), but I tend to never include accolades in builds as I consider them a "bonus" to the overall build. Silly, I know. But I have my quirks :P Like always slotting a recharge in rest. I do it. I even do it in game. I try to use rest about once a week, but for some reason my brain just won't let me have an empty slot

Edit: And then I look at Boxing with its empty slot... and I twitch a little. (Putting a Damage IO in that)
  22. I have a SS/FA brute that I am using for farming. I have worked over my build about 200 times (in mids) and it seems like no matter what I throw at it, it just doesn't get much better. For example, the current build I am working with has no purple sets in it. After cramming as many purples into the build as I can, I see very little improvement in performance (both in damage output and in survivability).

I searched these forums and looked over the few builds that were posted. While many approached the build from different perspectives, none were really "better" than what I have. They didn't appear to be able to handle tougher mobs (+3 for example) any better than I could, and they didn't kick out any significant damage increases (10 more points of damage on foot stomp with 80% fury and double stacked rage is not significant imo - fury fluctuations can account for that 10 damage quite easily in a fight.)

I don't feel like I have achieved the "pinnacle" of builds for this guy. In fact, a friend of mine tossed out a build that had many...MANY more common IOs in it than my build for very similar performance. I know I'm missing something here. Hopefully you kind folks can help me figure out what it is!

So I am putting it to the experts. What can you build with a SS/FA brute?

    Some build criteria:

    • I don't mind eating inspirations. I do that now and have no problem continuing with that in the future.
    • I would like to be as bad *** as possible. Plowing through +4/x8 would be great!
    • I would like the option to farm more than a single custom group I create in AE. One can easily make mobs that only deal fire damage against a /FA brute and have great success. However, I need to change on occasion. My eyes start to bleed if I have to kill the same guy 2,000,000 times in a week
    • APP or PPP is open. I'm not married to any of them. I tend to not like cones, but hey, if it makes the build, I can learn to adapt!
    • Last, but not least, money is no object here. Do it up! Although I find that cost more =/= performs better, I am not putting a limit on the money to be spent.
If you want, you can add in a description of what you were going for with the build. Obviously every build will need a minor amount of tweaking to fit someone else's play style, so if I know what you were going for from the beginning, it makes it easier for me to not mess that up while I look at minor changes.

Thanks in advance for all of the help!

Oh, and I am not posting my build for the time being because I want some fresh ideas. I've beat my build into the dirt trying to make it better. Giving everyone here a fresh start!

To quote a famous rabbit, "What a maroon".

P.S. I'd bet you Misaligned has never had to sell a thing in his life. I'd recommend not insulting your potential customers in the future. You'd have sold it instantly by saying, "Gladiator's Armor +3 Def for Sale. 2.75 Billion or Best Offer. Thanks."

Thanks for the bump Noght. I appreciate it.

However, had you done a small bit of looking, you would see that this is the 2nd time I have posted this particular proc. The first time was a 2 weeks ago? I got a lot of responses. All of them were negative. Frankly, I fail to understand why people get angry when someone is selling something for a price they think is too high. You don't have to buy it from me - why get angry?

2nd, I'd like to point out how my post is an echo of one your own. Its not about "How great am I" as you seem to think it is, its about time. That and not actually wanting people to get all cranked up over a sale of anything... especially in a game.

My Eyeballs bleed when I read this stuff.

Ok, here are some universal truths:

    1. You don't need IO's or the market to play the game. SO's are fine (no really).

    2. Infamy/Infuence isn't created by the market. Someone somewhere is playing the game and generating cash and drops (salvage, recipes, enhancements, whatever).

    3. The ONLY limiting factor is TIME. I would argue that it seems "fair" to pay "play money" to someone who is willing to sell something you want rather than try to acquiring yourself using method 1. IF you've decided that you want lvl 35 Common IO's rather than buying SO's at lvl 35, 40, 45 and 50 why not pay a fee to someone who is willing to take their finite resource, i.e TIME, to "hold" if for you so you can buy the stuff you need for a level 35 IO.

    4. Complaining about flipping seems silly because the "high" prices of products ENSURE that they are available whenever you want to buy them, feel free to "negotiate" a price. Why pay 50K for an Alchemical Silver when you can bid 25K and get it tomorrow.

If all the above is confusing to you take a toon to 35. Set a timer. Use the market for IO's, Salvage, Recipes to outfit it. Flip to alternate build. Set a timer. Go scrounge up the same stuff you need to outfit out that toon. Report back in a month when you are unable to get the stuff you need (assuming no AE tickets).

Heck I'll bankroll the experiment for you.

Then tell me if you don't think your TIME is more valuable then some "play money" that you've been complaining about.
Regardless, I took the opportunity to show people every way possible (with in-game mechanics) to get one of these without purchasing it from me. Clearly that makes me... a jerk?

Please feel free to continue to bump this thread. I appreciate it very much!
  24. I have one of these for sale. I am selling it for 2.75 Billion. I can be reached most easily via in game email @Misaligned or by private message here on the forum. You can try and reach me via /tell but I am HORRIBLE at watching chat

Before anyone feels the need to complain / criticize me for attempting to sell this for this price, please look at the following:

    1. If you do not like the price, you don't have to buy it. Ain't America great?

    2. The recipe is a level 46 recipe. It is exactly identical in every stat as a level 10 or a level 50. There is no depreciated value of this enhancement because it is a 46 and not a 50. The level 10 is the same proc as a level 50 in this set. In fact, with it being a level 46, you can slot it 3 levels earlier, and it conveniently uses the same salvage as the 50!

    3. At the time of this post. there are currently 200 bids on the market for this proc at various level ranges. There are none for sale. If you feel you can get a better price there, please by all means be my guest! I wish you nothing but the best of luck!

    4. You may use your alignment merits to buy one of these from a vendor. They cost 30 alignment merits. This will take you at a minimum 20 days from the completion of your first A-Merit mission.

If you do go the "speedy" route, you will need to do 5 tip missions every day. You will need to do your morality mission every other day (that's 11 missions over 2 days) without fail. You can't do more than 5, so please make sure you do all 5 every day. You will also need to purchase an A-Merit every day. This can be done every day, only once a day. The cost is 20 mil + 50 reward merits. After 20 days you will have spent 400 mil and 1000 Reward merits.

If that is something you are capable of doing. you will save 2.35 billion (minus the 'value' of 1,000 reward merits).

You may choose to not purchase an A-Merit every day. By simply doing your tip missions and alignment missions, you can have 30 merits in as little as 60 days. For those who care, that's exactly 300 tip missions and 30 morality missions. 330 missions total. Including travel time and assuming you can "blow through" each of these, you will spend at least 6 minutes per mission. Time-wise, you will spend at least 1,980 minutes doing these. If you prefer, it is 33 hours. If you cannot complete one mission in 6 minutes (including travel time), you will take even more time to get those 30 A-Merits.

    5. Please do not send me an email or a tell explaining how I am gouging the market. This is a game and you do not 'need' this enhancement. No one is forcing you to buy anything.

    6. If you most sincerely want one of these, but lack the funds to buy one, or the ambition to farm A-Merits for one. I suggest you start working on your PvP skills. These can drop off any PvP foe (afaik).

What you are paying for at 2.75 billion is not so much a rare enhancement, but time. How much is your time worth to you? If its not worth much, than this isn't for you

    Thanks, and good luck!
