Quote:Or the glitch that ignored weapon speed when using Jab. Early on, an Amazon could use even the heaviest spear like a melee machine gun, which made short work of just about everything. It was even better when you could play a bow-wielding Amazon in the Arcane Sanctuary before they fixed the glitch where you could shoot half the length of the Sanctuary and kill the False Summoner without getting more than 10 feet away from the entry portal.
Quote:D2 was a good game, for all its flaws, and I enjoyed it a great deal. But I'd never play it on Battlenet... I'd only play solo or on a LAN with friends. If I want to game online, I play CoH. -
Quote:I enjoyed Diablo II a lot, which is unusual for me since I don't normally enjoy action-oriented games. I found that the secret to success in that game is slotting items with gems that add a variety of elemental damage to weapons, or various protective effects to armors. I never found an unslotted magic item that could compare with a good slotted item. Combine gems to get bigger ones, and keep upgrading throughout the game. I was able to do well with all of the classes, but my favorite was the Amazon. I pumped points into Ice Arrow and the defensive skill tree, triple slotted a bow with good gems, and destroyed all opposition. Thanks to the gem damage, I could even inflict heavy elemental damage with normal attacks when I wanted to go easy on the skills and recover mana. What was really fun, though, was how unfair the game could become at times. For instance, a friend of mine had a screenshot of a unique skeleton, who was immune to physical damage, immune to cold damage, resistant to fire and ice damage, and strong against poison damage. What the [foul language] am I suppose to use to fight this [REALLY self-censored] thing with? Wishful thinking? And on top of that, the game was ugly. Uglier than the original Diablo, in fact.

I'm not an optimizer, but I do like to see what I'm getting. I really wish we could have had the Real Numbers from the beginning, but I'm very glad we have them available now. I like to see how much stealth, defense and resistance I have going for me, and I like to compare powers before I pick one.

"Where are the lost in King's Row?"
Having heard this many times, I tell a confused player where the Lost are.
"Where are the CoT in King's Row?"

Quote:So if farming is high gain and low risk, that means my past badge hunting in missions wasn't farming. I need another word for that then...Yeah, but you're right... it's taken on a whole new meaning here, which quite confused many of us older schoolers.
For example, doing the 7th Generation Paragon Protector missions repeatedly isn't low risk, it's just convenient. Hunting the bosses outdoors would actually have been lower risk for me, because I could have found gray bosses. But hunting the bosses would have been far more tedious. The Shivans only have one mission on the hero side, but I could have hunted them in Bloody Bay, but I don't go into PvP zones. -

Well, okay, I bow to your knowledge of other games. CoH was my first MMO, and I'm not familiar with MMO terminology before that.

Quote:No, that was powerleveling. Farming was repeating the same mission over and over without completing it, regardless of the challenge."Farming" arose to describe a certain emerging style of play that focused on a carefully "cultivated" experience- one that maximized reward (whatever reward you were seeking) minimized risk, and narrowed the experience of the game to a very small location. ITF repeats certainly narrows the experience of the game to a small location, but I don't see it min/maxing reward.

I read that as the standard token handout for existing costume slots that have been unlocked, not for unlocking new costume slots.

Quote:I would say in general that farming is repeating the same mission over and over for some reason. There are many reasons for that, including but not limited to:Farming is going to do a mission or missions with the explicit purpose of getting loot drops, recipes, or money.
- Getting certain kinds of drops (Science SOs, arcane salvage, etc).
- The particular map and enemies are great for gaining XP and/or inf, for whatever reason.
- Collecting hunting badges.
- It's just a really fun mission, and the player(s) don't feel like doing anything else for a while.
There used to be another reason for me: filling up the upper 30s mission gap in CoH. There used to be a rather large mission gap before getting to level 40 when soloing, so I found a CoT mission I liked and ran through it without completing it a number of times. That gap went away, so filling content gaps is no longer a reason for me to farm.
I've done some badge farming here and there in the past. For example, the 7th Generation Paragon Protector missions are good to farm for the Infiltrator badge. Pilgrim's final mission has a lot of Shivans that are good to farm for the Man/Woman in Black badge. I don't like to do too much of that, but I still might do some badge farming in the future for certain characters.
For me, repeating the same mission breaks immersion and is boring for me. I need plot, and repeating a mission breaks the plot. Doing the same mission over and over becomes progressively more tedious for me, and I can't do it too many times (maybe three or four). I certainly would never repeat the same mission with the same character just because it's fun, because it wouldn't be much fun the second time around. I have alts for that. (Oddly enough, I can do the same mission with many different characters without reducing my fun, because each time I'm immersed in the plot.) -

Emergency maintenance starting 5 PM Pacific time, lasting maybe two hours, due to severe stability problems with the latest patch.

The only other NCSoft game that interests me is Guild Wars, which doesn't have a monthly fee. And I don't even play Guild Wars very often.
-
Hmm. I'm afraid I wouldn't like such a game, for a number of reasons, including:
- I wouldn't be attached to a character who starts out at the top. There would be no sense of accomplishment in developing the character over time.
- Steep learning curve. The advantage to starting at low level is that you learn how each of the powers work over time. You build up gradually. Guild Wars once had a kind of open beta opportunity to jump straight to 20 in a brand new class, with most of the skills available. I spent a long time trying to figure out which skills might be useful for me, and couldn't come up with an effective combination. Later I started a new character from the beginning, and had much more fun.
- Point and click targeting? My reflexes aren't that good, and common MMO lag can kill you easily with a system like that. -
I hit 63 months on August 1st. It would be nice to get in on some beta testing. I haven't done that in a long time. I think my last beta test was Issue 9.
If it's much like the CoV beta testing, the first wave will probably have to deal with immense lag. So folks shouldn't expect to jump in and have fun playing. It's very much a test environment in the beginning. -
I didn't gain more than one level with any character. I gained a level with 13 characters.

- Lorenz Ansaldo's mission against the Sea Witch.
- Dr Forrester's mission against Silver Mantis.
- Tina Macintyre's mission against the Psychic Clockwork King.
- Maria Jenkin's mission against Marauder.
- The final mission in any CoV patron arc.
(All these things have something in common besides an AV/Hero. Can you guess?) -
That depends. If you're being thorough in going through the map, then you might not want to use it. If you're not being so careful, then it can be nice to know where the rooms are, while avoiding the dead end corridors.

I got my 63 month veteran reward today. I love the Reveal power. All it does is get rid of fog of war on any map, but it saves me a lot of time.
It has a 5 minute recharge and 1.5 second cast time, so you can use it often. You can use it in door missions as well as outdoor areas. If you use it inside a door mission, one application will get rid of the black on the map for every floor of the map. It's not a big thing. It's a nice little helpful tool. Very appropriate for a veteran reward.
*zaps the black out of the Dark Astoria map*
Oh yes, I'll be using it a lot.
