  1. Salon had a good article on the DNA of The Hunger Games and it goes much deeper than merely Battle Royale. Collins claims to have drawn inspiration from the myth of the Minotaur when young tributes were thrown into the labyrinth to be eaten by the aforementioned beast.

    She also claims she never saw Battle Royale, and I have no reason to disbelieve her. I think the theme of corrupt governments throwing people into gladiatorial games for sport is old enough that the fact that both of these stories feature it, just with young contestants, isn't enough evidence to prove plagiarism.

    Hell, Steven King reviewed The Hunger Games when it came out and basically pointed out how Collins was ripping off his The Long Walk and Running Man.

    The irony is the young female demographic is the core audience of the book, so they already know about the real violence in the story. As a parent, however, I understand the decision: it's one thing to read about disembowelments, impalings, and beheadings but it's quite another to see it presented realistically.

    But of course we all know a rated R movie would not have made as many mega-millions as they're expecting this movie to make so sadly I'm not surprised they may have sacrificed some "gritty realism" for the sake of the almighty dollar.
    The other reason they made the changes.

    I haven't seen Battle Royale yet, but I definitely intend to.
  3. If Hunger Games was rated R this would be a fairer fight. With the watered down violence, I'm not sure it can win.
  4. Yeah, the ending left me wondering how they found all the footage. I doubt this will get renewed so I guess we'll never know.
  5. I'll be on late tonight... save me a spot!

    I don't think I was on that one.

    This sums up my feelings on the matter.

    I see where you're coming from Flux, even though I have plenty of room on Victory myself (my AR/Pain was only my 25th 50 on Victory), but I think DXP weekend does one thing extremely well: get people on the server!

    Even if you had no interest in XPeez or Inf, you could pretty much put together a team for whatever you wanted this weekend without too much trouble. Yes, the focus was on WTFs and ITFs, but I saw a lot of Posis, Synapses, Numes, Morties, and LGTFs running as well, and that's not counting all the full mission teams out there.

    I had a lot of fun this weekend, completely aside from my tally. I hope DXP weekends remain a part of the game for years to come.

    No, I think it was the one after that. I ran a lot of ITFs this weekend.

    Most were slower than normal. I chalk this up to:
    • Wide level range, usually SKed up to 49 by the one 50 on the team.
    • Mostly non-50s, so no Incarnate powers.
    • Slotting was spotty at best, because everyone was lvling so fast.
    The 3 hour run took a while mostly because of a glitchy Rommie. In every other ITF, we were able to pull him behind the wall on the plaza and beat him down. That time, he ran around, spawned many more Nicti than he had before and the ambushes jumped us. I didn't notice ANY ambushes on the other runs, probably because we were out of range of the doors or whatever.

    Bottom line is we figured out and just focused on the Essences and took him down that way.
  10. I'm a lightweight, so I'm calling it a night now. (MP is starting a Morty Kal as I type...)

    Here's my tally for the weekend:

    AR/Pain Corruptor - 42->50
    Fire/Rad Corruptor - 37 ->44
    SJ/DA Scrapper - 25->27
    Titan/Inv Brute - 23->26
    Dark/Dark Dominator - 0->16

    It was a fairly productive weekend.

    How'd everyone else do?
  11. I saw many more Leprechauns than I expected, so I started to ask people who had them what they thought, and the reactions were universally positive.

    I stand by my purchase, but I have two complaints:

    1. The toggle seems to come off very often, so I'm not getting my 10% as much as I should.

    2. It gets old having him around... I'd like the bonus sans the pet.

    Now, now, GP... I made that statement when I thought the Leprechaun was targetable and killable. When I found out he couldn't be touched it did change things.

    I'm still the same MG everyone knows and loves. I still do not have the Coyote travel power!

    Let's put it this way: right after I bought the Leprechaun I had a 3 hour ITF. Not so lucky...

    But it is a perma 10% inf buff on all toons, so there you have it.
  14. Do you actually get a quad bonus for the TF completion?
  15. Masterful... and you even did the rap!

  19. Another DXP Weekend is almost upon us, so I once again ask that timeless question: Watcha doin'?

    I have a low 40s AR/Pain Corruptor from a previous red-side Isos run I'd like to get to 50. I will also be working on my reroll of Black Dynamite (SJ/DA).

    You forgot:

    4. Judgement Day (with all the graves giving up their dead)
    5. Worldwide Voodoo curse (or a curse from any other religious and/or magic tradition)

    I'm guessing it's Magic in this case.

    It made $70 million internationally the opening weekend, but that's probably still not enough for a sequel.
