  1. There is a moral to that story, Casual. Simply say, "No thank you" to a costume suggestion from the tailor that you do not like, rather than, "Ewwwwww, gross! Are you insane??"

  6. Alyssa, I highly recommend that you peruse issues 4-6 of the Top Cow City of Heroes run (free downloads here -- but the page layout is strange; the issue you want first shows Sister Psyche stopping bullets with a force field, and the next two are actually to the left).

These issues contain the "Smoke and Mirrors" arc written by Troy Hickman (Whose Twilight Guardian #3 is currently hitting the stands--mandatory plug for ol' Troy ).

Not only is that the best depiction of Statesman in the comics, it also explains the origin of the statue in front of the train station in Kings Row, which is pretty awesome. Usually Statesman is depicted as impossibly arrogant and a jerk. Troy's depiction attempted to segue that into an interesting, human but noble Statesman, and I liked it a lot.

(The Blue King run of the comics did not feature Statesman so much.)

I like playing Heroes. Stick with the good guys!

The first kid changes your life in ways that you have no clue about going in. You tend to have that "deer in headlights" aspect associated with the "Oh, wow . . . I'm a parent" amazement . . . and panic.

The second kid is not twice the work. The first one acts up due to all the attention being paid to the baby, and later the two learn to play off of each other, so it is really about four times the work.

The third kid is no big thing . . . until you realize, "Oh no! Now they outnumber us!"

The fourth kid ends up being, "Eh, what the hell. Another one won't make much of a difference."

Maybe it's because I don't play Heroes that much, but I don't ever see much besides "He's perfect; now go away."
Marcian, were you able to catch the "Smoke and Mirrors" arc in the CoH comics, authored by Troy Hickman? Troy not only provided excellent takes on the Freedom Phalanx in general and Statesman in particular, but he told a ripping good yarn and provided the background for the statue that ultimately appeared in Kings Row. (The CoH comics are all downloadable; the arc is issues 4-6.)

Point being that Troy gives needed nuance to Statesman. Your perception of "He's perfect; no go away" certainly was not followed by any of the other comic authors, who made him a very arrogant, petty tyrant; Troy's depiction provided some depth and certainly a balance to that depiction.

And by gum, how is it you "don't play Heroes that much"? Hopefully you mean your DVD collection of the TV show and not CoH!

Hey, are you trying to derail the derail??

What I read into Troy Hickman's depiction of Statesman was a combination of factors: First and foremost, being over 100 years old is a lot of territory to cover, especially with everyone in your age-group (save Recluse) dying off. Second, Statesman is also dealing with the aftermath of the first Rikti invasion, in which most of his super-powered peer group was killed off; his intial interaction with Moodswing reminded me of the story of the rude clerk: the customer's reaction to the clerk's rudeness was mollified upon hearing that their son had died suddenly two days earlier. I think Troy went a long way toward the "cool, noble but interesting" hero we would like to see in Statesman. (He also showed what high-level scripting can do for a comic, but that his another topic.)

Statesman, in the totality of his in-game and comic presentation, is currently a confused jumble and a poster boy for the perils of different writers with different agendas (and skill-sets), much like many Silver Age heroes are today, which is too bad. That particular point would take us pretty far afield, but I will note that Troy Hickman once said something to the effect of, "If you want a moody, psychopathic, adulterous, self-loathing vigilante 'hero,' then create one yourself--- don't ret-con an existing hero into one."

My respect for him as a character went up doing the Incarnate arc because we learned he could give into rampant power and become a dictator, but he chooses not to. He's showing wisdom there that a lot of people may not given that situation (I'm lookin' at you, Recluse).
I think that is a good point, and someone else has pointed out that thanks to speaking with Statesman, Lady Grey and the Mender, we as heroes know a lot more about what we are getting into, and the extreme dangers of the "all at once" route that Marcus Cole had no idea he was getting into.

    This conspiracy was amusingly put.

  19. Epic thread. Warden_de_Dios once again comes through with a hilarious graphic.

Per the derail, I dunno that I can unreservedly prop Joss Whedon on the whole, but Firefly was a wonderful series. The only objection to it being he completely made up various weird "quotes" from the Bible to further his agenda in that area; the jury was still out on Book when the series abruptly ended. Fortunately, his religious axe was not ground very much and the series overall is outstanding, based on WONDERFUL characters brought to vivid life by amazingly talented actors. With that one caution, I would recommend it very, very highly.

The Character has always been portrayed as an arrogant jerk.
This is another time that I wish Troy Hickman could have carried on with the CoH comic. His take on Statesman in "Smoke and Mirrors" was an excellent one, and I really think he could have made the character interesting as well as noble.

You are correct: Statesman is pretty much a jerk in the comics elsewhere, while in the backstory to the game, he is an inspirational and selfless leader. In the backstory, 1,000 heroes willingly follow Statesman to almost certain death (800 die) in the Alpha Gambit so that the Omega Team could enter the portals and disable them. The arrogant Statesman of the comics could not inspire anyone to follow him anywhere.

Where have you gone, Troy Hickman, a nation turns its lonely eyes to you...
  23. The graphics by Warden_De_Dios and Golden Girl are hilarious. And many clever quips abounding throughout. Many chuckles and LoLs. Fine thread.

I agree. The unlock should be GR ownership. Costume unlocks, especially when they cannot occur until level 30 or 35, are a PITA. At worst, one character should permanently unlock the entire account, but I would rather not see them at all.

I for one certainly do. Are we still at war with Oceania?

It just gets so confusing. Is Supergirl now A) Kal-El's cousin B) Kal-El's babysitter C) A blob of protoplasm D) Who? Never existed! ??

Definitely not a ret-con fan here. As for the Tyrant/Domanatrix relationship, I suspect it was an Emmert product, and it was certainly broadly hinted that it was improper, and confirmed as such by the comment about "not wanting to look under THAT rock" in the comics. If it is gone, good riddance, but it never should have been brought up in the first place. The mechanism for doing away with it, however, cannot completely bleach all traces away--Mr. Orwell is surely disappointed.

As for the writers giving "differing weights," that is how you get Doctor Doom and a number of others soundly beaten by Squirrel Girl. Ridiculous.
