Hmm... Interesting. Does that mean a level 50 FF Defender with Force Bolt slotted for Knockback can reliably bounce AVs around? That's relevant to my intrests. That and a mag 51 KB on a level 1 Hellion sounds like all kinds of fun.

Welcome indeed. We actually DO have the alias system here on CoH. You have a Global Name, beginning with "@". Send a tell to that and you send one to whatever character you've logged on with. But there's no way to get your real name with it. We're superheroes, after all. We respect secret identities.

Also here's a free syntax tip. Tells in CoH are formatted "/tell [name], [message]". Remember that comma. Everyone makes that mistake when they come from another MMO.

Let's never forget that a gaming company is a business first and foremost and a publicly traded one is mandated by law to attempt to get the most profit for their shareholders.

Obviously there are differing approaches that companies can take, for example by building goodwill and customer satisfaction in all phases or another simply being to put out great games and ignore the rest.

The fact that I play this game indicates where I choose to spend my money.
I get it's a money move, but this just seems like they decided to copy something popular without even considering what damage it could do to their brands. Blizzard was know to be a competent and conservative developer. Not big on innovation, and kind of slow moving, but what they made usually set the standard for the genre. Warcraft, Starcraft, Battle.net 1.0, Diablo, WoW. These are all the archetypical examples of their genres, and the fans, the millions of fans loved it.

Now they're going to copy Facebook? That's stupid. People don't go on WoW to network, they have Facebook for that. They go on WoW to team up and kick some... what DO they kill in WoW, anyway? The all-in-one approach will fail. It has always failed. Simply because when you get a successful all-in-one product, some company is going to snipe you with a smaller, more focused product. Always. Look at Nintendo and the Wii for a perfect example of this.

Activision is going to strangle Blizzard to death. It's a pity, because I liked Blizzard. But Blizzard is no longer allowed to do what they do best. Slowly and steadily develop the next genre kings. If Blizzard is forced to rush, they'll make bugs, just like any other developer. If Blizzard releases a buggy game, their reputation is shot, because Blizzard games don't have bugs. MMOs excluded, of course.

I feel a little sad. I had a feeling this would happen, but I'm sad about Blizzard. It's clear to me that they're heading down the path Infinity Ward took now. I'll miss them.
  5. It'd be kind of sad if this is what starts WoW's eventual demise. It just seems so... stupid. Then again, only Blizzard can kill WoW. Or in this case, only Activision can kill Blizzard and WoW by proxy.

There's part of me that wants to know how this idea could possibly have been approved. I mean, I could totally see a RealID-ish setup for a new game, but changing an ongoing and insanely successful game like this? What are they thinking?!

On the other hand, I really DON'T want to know what they're thinking. I fear I'd have to bleach my brain if I knew.

What I make of that is that we'll see security storm Blizzard HQ any day now and remove the heads of the studio. Just like with Infinity Ward.

Blizzard is dead. It's all Activision now.

I suppose this is where I say: "I claim no ownership of that idea and Paragon Studios/NCSoft are free to do with it as they wish without having to ask for my permission." So go nuts, if you want to. I'll just smile and laugh.

One thing is for sure about this RealID thing: I'll never buy another Activision-Blizzard game. Not even Starcraft 2, despite looking forward to it.

    A Question

Of course, what else would a Defender be?

Seriously, though. I'd probably expect some kind of Traps related concept.

I use a Logitech cordless laser mouse at home, a Logitech trackball at work and a graphics tablet if I'm going to be editing an image.
This is exactly why I went for the G500, actually. I've used the G5 I had regularly for a good three years with no issues, no carpal tunnel, no sore muscles, and no strained joints. I'm wasn't about to take a chance with a mouse with too different a shape. The G500 is almost exactly the same shape as the G5, so I went for that. I've tried the MX series. They're good, but I prefer the G series.

But yeah, I agree. A good mouse is one of the most important parts of a PC you'll use on a regular basis. I mean the G500 (and G5) has this silly drawer where you can change wheigts to customize the balance. I find it hilariously silly, but... I still spent som time to balance my mouse "just right". I know I'll like it in the long run.
  11. The MX1100 looks nice, yeah. But I actually prefer a wired mouse. Scary, I know. I went with the G500 I had been looking at. A little expensive for a mouse, but I think I'm going to be happy with it.
  12. The mousewheel on my trusty old Logitech G5 Laser is giving out. I took it apart and cleaned it, which fixed some of it, but there's no real way around it, it's worn out. I need a new mouse. It's too bad, because I'm really happy with my G5, except for the mousewheel, so I'm a little sad to have to replace the old cracked-blue rodent. But things break, mice included.

I'm mainly considering doing the direct upgrade path and getting a Logitech G500 replacement. I like the wired laser mouse I have, and the new model has a better mousewheel, while keeping the shape of my old one. But I'm taking suggestions, since I'm not well versed in the area of mice.

    So... what's good with mice?
  13. Didn't we do this thread recently? Eh, I'll play along. It's a good excuse to gush about my characters.

How evil is "Evil" for your villain?
My main villain would be my Stalker "White-Lie". (Moved server, had to get the hyphenated name.) She's a ninja-for-hire. She's evil in the way that she cares little about the lives of others, and will kill any target she's paid to. Lesser jobs like stealing, kidnapping and reconnaissance is also part of the ninja package.

Are there lines of Evil your villain will not cross?
"A deal is a deal." Once the terms of the contract are agreed on, you will never see White-Lie be the first to break it. She's a professional. You might find her relaxing in Pocket D, being all chatty and friendly, then having her come after you all ninja-style the next day because she was hired to kill you. Nothing personal. Also, Lord Recluse himself has an immunity deal. No acting directly against the Big Spider himself, due to what happens in the final villain arc. She'll happily work for him, if he can pay, of course.

There's actually a funny little tangent to the question here: Is there a line of Good that my villain WILL cross?

The answer is yes. If the good guys can pay her fee, she has no qualms about rescuing people, taking down bad guys or even saving the world. One of her favorite clients is Vanguard, after all. They pay like everyone else, plus bonuses. She really likes her Vanguard Katana.

So yeah, in Going Rogue, she'll be doing just that.
  14. You know you've played CoH too much when you get annoyed that the character in the last shot uses AM and then flies into the group.

That's true, but this is the first pre-order bonus that has any mechanical effect. The sprints and costume parts are just cosmetic.

Eh, after seeing what they do, I'm not that angry anymore, but I still oppose the store exclusive pre-order thing on principle.
  16. Really?

I thought you guys were better than this. Store exclusive ingame preorder items in a multiplayer game is the worst trend in video games so far. Sure, they're not that powerful, but it's a really bad precedent.

I'm disappointed. I really thought NCSoft were better than this.
  17. You can just get it off the official City of Heroes FTP.

    US Updater
    EU Updater

Run the one matching your region and it'll prompt you on where you want to install the game, and download it all from the servers. If you have CoH installed anywhere else on another PC, you can also just copy it over manually using a USB drive or similar.

No kidding. She could even have attempted to use one, have it fail, then explosion. That would not only create a death scene, but it'd also give the writers and out if they do want to bring the double back.

But still, this is a comic book based game and I didn't see a corpse. I mean: "Died in an explosion"? Yeah, right. That'll stick.
  19. I wondered why my double didn't use Personal Force Field once she had taken on the invaders. It's a bit creepy to fly into a room full of defeated evil mes in opposite costumes, though.

Still, a pretty fun idea for an arc. I really like the idea of radio contact like that. Then the Fridge Logic kicks in... They gave her a radio, but not a medi-porter?!

    Wings!

There are three ways to get wings in the game:

    1. Craft them from a costume piece recipe.
    2. Play the game for over a year.
    3. Buy a Mac Edition code for the Valkyrie wings.

Since you're new, we'll focus on the first one.

To get a wing recipe you can either be lucky and get one off any enemy you defeat, or you can just buy one in the Consignment House/Black Market. It'll say that it needs some specific pieces of salvage to be built, so get those too.

Take this to a University and craft it at one of the glowing tables there. You'll be told that you've unlocked a new costume piece. You can now access that set of wings you've built.

The wings you can build, the wings that are a veteran reward and the DLC wings aren't the same, by the way.

The Angel and Demon wings are veteran rewards.
The Valkyrie and Armored Valkyrie are DLC.
The rest, including Dragon, Bat, Skeletal, Tech, Fairy, Insect, and Burned are craftable only.

I hope that clears it up?

Oh, and you unlock capes by doing a mission at level 20, in case you didn't know this yet.
  21. I like pragmatic villainy. Yes, I'm evil. Yes, I've done evil deeds to other people for personal gain. No I'm not going to start eating babies or punching kittens. World domination? Eh, maybe not. Doesn't seem worth the trouble. Indiscriminate murder? Please, I'm a professional, not a maniac.

One villain I have is simply a ninja for hire. She'll kill, kidnap, steal or investigate anything for the right price. Pay on time and she'll be polite and efficient, maybe with a professional service-with-a-smile. Betray her and you'll not even see her coming, it'll still be with a smile, though. Of course, this pretty much had her end up as a top Vanguard agent. They paid better than Arachnos. Also without the whole "trying to kill you in a social-Darwinist experiment", instead she gets neat toys as a bonus.

I've got another one going which takes the idea of a broken psyche and runs with it. What if your subconscious took over and you became locked inside your own body, while it acts on base desires and instinct... and had powerful psychic powers, mentally tearing people apart? Yeah, this one is going to end up really broken in the end. Or redeemed with GR. Haven't decided yet.

  23. Hiya!

You know, with a game as mature as CoH, I'd say the main thing to do is to get the client in as many new hands as possible. CoH is a fairly straightforward game, you find out if you like it pretty fast, so getting more people to try the game would likely create more subscribers. I don't know how hard this is to do, but have you considered hardware bundles? I just got a new graphics card and there was a full version of Assassin's Creed and a trial version of Lord of the Rings Online in that. Granted, I haven't actually installed either, but I would never have gone out of my way to get a trial version of LotRO.

With the shiny new graphics in Ultra Mode, maybe you could get nVidia or ATI to slip in a trial DVD in some of their packages? I notice you still have that "The way it's meant to be played!" nVidia logo on the splash screen and you're running a PhysX physics engine, too. Getting a DVD into an nVidia bundle doesn't seem too impossible... even if ATI pretty much has the market cornered these days.

Other than that, I think everyone else have said what I wanted about getting to comic book conventions and targeting college students and such.

Also, CoH has one really nice thing going for it marketing-wise: It's actually a good product. That makes it so much easier.

If you think that the sound quality is good now, you should take a peek at the I17 Open Beta. It's not just the graphics that got an overhaul. A lot of things that used to be silent have sounds now, and the quality in general has been improved.
