  1. My latest alt idea: A Fire/Kin. Tanker.

For the sole reason of being able to broadcast "Level 38 Fire/Kin LFT!". It'd be awesome.
  2. That's an interesting view of the previous two generations. I'm inclined to agree. Maybe Sony did get lucky. At least they were at the right time with the right product, twice in a row. The prospect of a future Microsoft vs. Nintendo console war has potential, too. As he said, remember when console wars were fun to watch? That one could be awesome.
  3. Not what I expected to see in this topic at all.

It is pretty good, isn't it?
  4. Nice. Also guess what game was advertising all over the ATi Driver page? That's right, Going Rogue. Now that is a targeted ad.
  5. Defenders:

If it's a fair fight, we'll fix that.

That's a critter quirk, actually. If you find a spawn fighting each other, they'll both be red to you. So if a PPD group wins, there'll be a red PPD officer standing around, ready to attack whoever comes by.

Well, as I see it, because they are intentionally crossed. Resistance moral choices are designed such that they favour the Loyalists more while Loyalist moral choices are slated such that they favour the Resistance. Let me explain:

The final moral choice in the Resistance comes courtesy of Calvin Scott - do we blow up people's only source of fresh water to "free their minds" and let them "choke on dead air and foul water," as Muro would put it, or do we wait and find an alternate solution? If I want to stay with the resistance, then I have to kill people by taking away their drinking water. In this case, the Loyalist option sounds a lot more appealing.

The final moral choice with the Loyalists comes courtesy of Interrogator Kang - do I reveal the Emperor's plan to slaughter Primal Earth to the people, thus instigating open revolt, or do I keep it quiet and deal with it myself? If I want to stay with the Loyalists, I need to hide this horror from the people, and for what? To avoid upsetting the peace? To spite the Resistance? In this case, the Resistance option sounds a lot more appealing.

EDIT: Also reading that post, I think my character's Neutropilis arc is set now. She'll continue the Responsibility line until the end. She'll do a lot to protect the people, but she'll NOT help commit Genocide. Then she'll do the Warden line, and when the option comes to bomb the water facility she'll turn back again. Ending in "My god! You're all madmen! I'm outta here! Maybe I can help save that other world... from us."

Clever, writers, very clever! To paint the moral ambiguity of Praetoria and make us less likely to entrench ourselves on just one side, you made each side's moral choices biassed towards the OTHER side, such that every time we feel like we are where we belong, the moral choice suggests the opposite. It's not how I would have handled it, as I'd probably have played it straight all the way, but that kind of underhandedness really does work. What do you know!
Huh, you know, I think you're right. I've been running the Responsibility arc and the moral choices so far have been biased towards the Resistance. ("Kill Cleo" vs. "Save Cleo" and "End the Syndicate" vs. "Help a father rescue his child".) I mean the first one is 50/50. But the second one? You even get a photo of said daughter as a souvenir. That choice is made to make you feel rotten. Do you let all the work you've done against the Syndicate go to waste, or do you save his daughter? I believe this is called the "Sunk cost fallacy". I've already done this much, no turning back now. Fiendishly written, I like it even more now.

EDIT: I think my character's Neutropolis arc is set now. She'll go Responsibility until the end. But when she learns of Tyrant's planned genocide, she'll switch sides. Then do the Warden part up until the water facility plot. Then she'll switch back. Or rather, she'll go "My GOD! You're all mad! That's it, I'm out of here. I'm going to that other world and see if I can protect THEM from US." I think that would be a proper way to end it. Rejecting both the "good" paths endings and going rogue, so to speak. And I'll get to tell Tyrant so to his face this way.

  9. Reading that TVTropes page I linked to reminded me of a villain that was good, but then turned really bad.

I present to you... umm... Ansem? Xehanort? His Heartless? Or was it his Nobody? Maybe both... Let me try that again.

The bad guy from Kingdom Hearts II

Okay, let's see in the first game we had "Ansem" who stole the Hearts of worlds in order to plunge the multiverse into DARKNESS! Got beat up by a kid wielding a key, Donald Duck, and Goofy. That was a pretty good villain. Corrupted the hero's best friend, kidnapped the girl, had a grandiose scheme. Hit all the good marks on the villainy list. Then the sequel hit... oh boy. Turns out, the guy named Ansem? Yeah, he not. His name is Xehanort, a student of Ansem the Wise (voiced by Christopher Lee!) who managed to split himself in to two halves. His Heartless (which is made from his heart) and his Nobody (which is made from his body). The Ansem you killed in the first game? That was just his Heartless, in the second you faced off against his Nobody.

It's at this point where you just stop and go "What." Now he does act as a decent villain in the sequel, but seriously. What the hell. Ansem is not Ansem, and the guy you thought you killed was only half of not-Ansem. Why would you bother making it so needlessly complicated? KH1 Ansem vanished in a flash of light, you could easily have brought him back. Instead we get... that abomination of a plot twist. And the series only got worse with that from then on.

As an added bonus, all the named Nobodies have an anagrammed name with an X added. Which makes "Xehanort" into either "No Heart" or "Another". Who names their kid that?

I suppose if you want to list him by name, the real name is Xehanort's Nobody from Kingdom Hearts II.

I agree with EvilGeko. I'd stay out of crime fighting, unless it was to happen right under my nose.

I'd turn to the people-rescue business instead. There's a fire? I'm already inside the building getting people out. Traffic accident? Look who's already there giving first aid! Severe weather like downpour, storms, snow or intense heat? Yup, I'm there, helping out. People missing at sea or lost in the wilderness? I'm already searching for them. Major natural disaster? Looks like I'm working overtime.

Bank being robbed? I'm there with a high resolution camera, gathering as much information as I can, but not interfering. That's for the police to do, all I can do is gather as much data as possible. The only crimes I'd interrupt is violent ones practiced near me.

So I suppose you could call that being a Hero, except not in the traditional comic-booky sense.
  11. Well, let's start close to home, shall we?

Lord Recluse in City of Heroes

What does he do, really? Other than stand around and look all spidery or robbing banks. (I suppose a super-villain needs a hobby...) And giving really corny speeches. For the really big bad of the game, he's just not impressive enough. Nemesis is a more interesting villain, and Nemesis is kind of annoying.

Ganondorf in Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Now don't get me wrong, Ganondorf was a nice series of boss fights, and he's usually a welcome face in the Zelda games. His Wind Waker appearance was probably his strongest outing yet, but he really wasn't needed in Twilight Princess. Zant was more than enough villain, he even hurt Midna badly, and with a few minor adjustments he would have been as awesome a boss fight as Ganondorf. There's a reason that there's a trope named Hijacked by Ganon. Go away pig-sorcerer-man. We HAVE a decent villain here already. Go menace some other princess and boy in green clothes. Or get another hobby, you're getting a little creepy now.

Sigma in the Megaman X series

I'll give him credit, his first scheme was decent, and he managed to kill a main character. That's pretty good for a villain. Then he became obsessed with resurrecting and/or killing Zero and was turned into a virus. That really came from Zero. Then things got weird and Sigma, while still putting up a fight, just became a token final boss. Until he was dropped completely in X8. Poor old Sigma, he should have stayed dead after the first few defeats.

Yeah. If I was a writer on GR and reading the forums right now, I'd have the biggest, goofiest smile om my face. So much discussion, and the only thing I think we'll all agre on is that the writing is awesome.

  15. I'll admit, I had a few doubts about that one, too. I'm playing a Praetorian of my four color true Hero, and trying to keep her more or less the same, albeit a bit harsher. So the choice comes up. Kill Cleo or kill Washington. On a character who'd always choose the non-lethal option, just like her Primal. Yeah...

So the breakdown went like this:
Cleo helped me stop a bombing. That's good. She also sold me out to the resistance... that's bad. She deliberately set me up to get killed. That is also bad. Killing her will probably get me a faceful of Marauder's fists. That is also bad. Washington helped me track down a serial killer. That's good. He also warned me against the ambush, although a little late.

*Click* You have chosen to aid the Loyalists.

Sorry Cleo, but I don't take kindly to betrayal. Then I let Washington beat her to death, and told White all about it. Then got out of the way as fast as possible. No need to stay within punch range of him after delivering that news... Then I headed to Imperial City where another serial killer case awaited. This city has a lot of those, it seems.

It looks weird to see other players stand where Cleo used to be and talk to nobody, though.

Wait, what? The same Hardcase that absolute will NOT deal with demons because he knows they'll turn on you... bound a demon? Huh. Does the Rogue Isles have a Darwin Award?
  18. Didn't they record new sentai footage for Power Rangers? Because the American series ran out, and needed more? I seem to remember something like that, and Linkara mentioned it in his History of Power Rangers videos. Which, by the way are totally awesome if you're even a slight fan of any of the seasons. He's up to Lightspeed Rescue now.
  19. I've made one Praetorian variant so far, of my Forcefielder Aegis Rose. The original is a classic Silver Age Comics Code friendly character. Defend the innocent, use non-lethal force, uphold the law, dress modestly, and generally be an all out Hero with a capital H. She'll never change sides, it's not part of who she is.

That made her Praetorian a bit of a challenge to make, because Silver Age does simply not work in Praetoria. However, what if it did? It'd take quite a lot of denial to be a Silver Age Hero in Praetoria, especially since upholding the law there is morally gray at best. So I changed her backstory to heavily involve defending people outside against DE attacks at a way too early age. One magic burnout later and she's forced to flee to the only safe place around. Praetoria. When her magic begun to return, she got Powers Division'd, and decided to defend the innocent, uphold the law, use non-lethal force just like her Primal counterpart. She dresses more extravagantly, though, and she is clearly using the Silver Age persona as a facade to hide some pretty big emotional scars, both concerning the DE and a fear of burning out her magic again. She's Arcane Rose, magical prodigy, Illusion/FF Controller.

The way I see it, using some kind of Devouring Earth twist on your character is an easy way to get that small subtle change you need to have the character branch off in a completely different way. By having my character need to use her magic at such a young age, compared to her Primal who started out late in the Rikti War, she had no one to teach her and burned out. With her powers returning, she's overly cautious and instead of using magic as a blunt instrument like her Primal, she's conjuring up Illusions and being more subtle. Her fear of overdoing it also explains the AT difference in power concerning her Forcefields. My Defender can nearly Defense Cap her teammates. Her Praetorian won't.
  20. Actually, Polar Shift is in a Hero mission where you save her from Longbow and the CoT. She ends up revealing that she doesn't really want to hurt people anymore, then leaves. So... retired? Or begun converting to Rogue/Hero?

That would be one of the best crossovers ever. Just because BATB Bats would just run with it. The question is, who'll visit who? On one hand, have the Scooby gang in Gotham has potential, on the other, it'd be fun to see them investigate this mystery of the Bat-Man. Fred will either be annoyed or impressed when they try to trap him.

Exactly my point. You've got a good three minutes between each buff cycle, and that boss could stand to be a little closer to that Tanker there... Force Bolt! That's better.

Indiscriminate knockback is bad. The ability to deliver enemies into AoE patches and/or a Scrapper's melee range? Awesome. Of course, battle is fluid, so I might miss, but luckily, it's usually enough to send them flying through the Tanker's taunt aura. Still, I prefer actually hitting the Tanker/Scrapper with the enemy. A nice clean delivery.
  24. This is actually pretty good. Decent writing, good animation, and I love a good pun. "Mr. E." definitely counts here.
  25. Thanks! This went flawlessly for me.
