The thing about the community is that it'll probably get better. Games that encourage teaming and helping eachother out tend to enourage a better community as well. The game just launched though, so the general rabble of teenagers who just learned what curse words are will dominate the forums and the chat. Once those players grow up, and more mature players take residence, it'll get better.
Probably.
Or it could turn out like WoW and be terrible forever. I'm not exactly a psychic, but my guess is that it'll get better. -
Shared loot and xp is somethin CoH did- it was not as advanced as in guild wars (you still had to team), but it was something CoH did.
Rewards for exploring are, too, something CoH did... even though it is not as advanced as in GW2.
Giant Monster like enemies that (most of the time) require teams or even leagues to defeat, and spawn in the overworld free of quests and such. Lusca is probably the most notable example, as it is exceedingly hard to beat alone without a rather expensive build. And even with a rather expensive build, chances are you're gonna die a few times.
The use of a cell phone and an exit button in CoH *helped* to curb running all over the map and backtracking through instances you've already cleared. I'd say CoV does it better, actually. The contacts there tend to give you their number after a quest or two, and the arcs tend to stay in one area. Again, GW2 took this idea and improved upon it, completely eliminating running all over the map dozens of times.
So yes, some of the ideas are based off of what CoH (and many other games) have done, and then those ideas were improved upon.
Of course, there are things that CoH did that GW2 did not, but... that is more a difference in target audience and genre than anything else. Namely, the lack of gear covering up your painstakingly crafted costume and the unrestricted movement. Both of those are things that go against the very core of games like GW2, and thus cannot be implemented. For instance, the ability to fly would make all the jumping puzzles instantly obsolete, as well as making dodging much, much easier. In order for flight to work, it has to be limited (like in Aion), or intended from the start (like here). Here there are no jumping or climbing puzzles, and whether something hits or misses is determined the instant the attack starts, not by whether or not you were within the line of the attack when it went off.
EDIT: PR, what's up with the personal attacks? We were having a reasonable discussion, no reason for those. -
I don't think anyone said CoH has everything GW2 has, or that CoH does everything better.
What they are saying is that a lot of the supposedly "new" innovations in GW2 were done in CoH. Now, just because CoH did it first does not detract from the fact that GW2 did it as well, and without a monthly subscription fee.
GW2 is a great game that does a lot of things right, but they didn't necessarily do all those things first. In fact, that's a good thing. It means they have looked at other great games (like CoH) and learned from them. And because CoH has been around so long, they can see the mistakes that were made as well and learn from those. -
Quote:Numina isn't dead, War Witch very much is.I always thought CoH subscribed to the idea, you could only get a Rez if you died "Naturally" thus souls like Numina and War Witch were hands-off for their deaths were really less death and more change of physical state. Neither are dead, per se.

She got half her face melted off.
The reason she's still around probably has something to do with the whole Witch thing. There were apparent similarities between kheldians and whatever WW and her coven were. Something to do with weird psychic energy. And alien ghosts.
Though my memory may be fuzzy. -
Sam, if you don't want to interact with other players at all, thats fine. But a lot of people do, which is why they play MMOs. The complaint of having to interact with others makes no sense whatsoever, because that is the point of MMOs.

I'd probably reroll Will O' the Wind. He never felt right as an EM/EA Stalker, but that was pretty much the only choice for pure air looking stuff.
-
GW2 would not be a replacement for CoH, assuredly. It is missing a lot of the main ideas. The genre, gear, ect. It is aimed at a completely different audience to CoH.
I just happen to be in both audiences. -
Yes, most of the supposedly "new" stuff was done by CoH.
Shared loots/xp, wanting help with bosses, encouraged teaming, the ability to call/teleport to contacts... and we did it while being able to jump more than two feet.
Oh, and we can fly.
However... it does look like a good game. -
Probably not. Most of the charm is the teaming. I'd get quickly bored single player.

First and foremost, I will miss the costume creator and the power system.
Second, I will miss the enhancement system. Why spend five hours making a costume only to cover it with gear?
And then, everything else in the game. -
Quote:You can find the CoH comics online. The first series revolves around War Witch, Apex, and Horus.Very cool! I always thought it would be great to be able to go into the old building on a TF or something.
And I'm not sure what the full back story to War Witch is, but for some reason I see her as like a hero version of Ghost Widow.
The second series has a few War Witch cameos.
I'm fairly certain the comics are canon. -

Quote:Probably because she was one of the main characters in the first series of CoH comics. That was cool. Thanks for sharing it.
I like that the relationship between the two of them was progressing. That seemed a "realistic" expression of two people who work together growing closer. Also, I think it's neat that they planned to resurrect War Witch, though I think it could have benefited from a tiny bit more explanation about why they wanted to rez her in particular. (She's not the only ghost around.)
Basically, it sounds like Posi got a Ultra Mode upgrade. -
Quote:The other class is also Ranger.Note that the Dual Archery set is only available to elven or half-elven Rangers who dual-class into Ranger.
And it means they can dual wield their dual wield, then using multishot they can fire 12 arrows at once.
As an aside, 8-bit Theater is awesome. -
I have Combat Jumping, but its just a LotG mule. Also, its a toggle, and therefore useless to me.

I don't have any builds worth anywhere near those numbers!
My closest is my perma-PA ill/rad. 1.5 bil there.
The only challenge 24 incarnate masterminds will ever face is lag. -
... Ok, I admit, its starting to sound better. Especially the switching between builds every 10 seconds, that sounds really fun.
Few questions:
How many character slots do you have free, and how many character slots do you have Gold?
Can you switch costumes?
Aaaand... how many summons can I work into my build without being useless? -
Oh, we're bragging now?
Good.
My Nin/Time/Mace build is, to put it simply, terrible. It is the first thing I ever used IOs on. I used no guides and had no previous knowledge. I worked toward no build goals. I didn't even frankenslot, ever. Hell, I even put in an entire set of LotG, not just the recharge bonus. I just looked at the set bonuses and picked the one that looked the best. And I had a budget of around 100mil. Most of his build is SOs.
Eventually I spent 200mil total. I've never ever gone back and redone his build, despite having plenty of money and (dare I say) build knowledge now. There is one very, very good reason for this.
He doesn't need it.
This craptastic build handles anything the game can throw at him on 4x8. He can keep his defense at 55% without incarnate. With barrier he has the incarnate cap. The ninjas are all soft capped or close enough as makes no difference. He has solo'd ever AV and GM the game as thrown at him, up to and including Lusca. He can rush into any mob known to man and be unharmed. He can floor an entire group's recharge and run speed many times over.
Maybe if the +res IO bonuses had ever gotten to live I would have redone it, but as is I have no need.
He is, truly, more powerful than he really should be. He is definitely more powerful than he needs to be.
So that is the reason he has kept his same, terrible build all this time. He really, truly, does not need anything better. -
... I find it easier to be honestly ignorant about all things code.

Main problem I'm seeing with CO is the extremely low amount of powers. Unless I'm missing something, there don't seem to be pools or a secondary, just that one set. And since they are spaced out so much, you'll go most of your time with just a couple of attacks, which sounds like it'd be excruciatingly repetitive.
It does seem kind of odd that CO was made after CoH, and yet seems so much worse. Hopefully it'll get better, and the influx of CoH refugees will push development along a bit. -
Quote:Yet still funny. No kidding. After all, it would be more in the spirit of their stated goals to provide all their products for free. Or better yet, packaged with hundred dollar bills.
Taking those statements literally is assinine.
Seriously, they could have said something like "to provide good service for as long as possible". But no, they made it their mission to not stop until everyone in the world was happier because of them. they were, seriously, asking for it.
