  1. I just bumped into this thread by accident, my take on it:

I have a few characters (2 to be exact) that I have played from day 1, that have grown on me as I leveled them up slowly, being a casual player, and actually put in all the 600 or so game hours to get my first to level 50. I don't think I can do that again as it's taken me many months to do so. Having to start off from scratch with neither of those characters will make the game feel completely different to me, as they are, for lack of a better word, the corner stone of my CoX gaming experience.

It would affect my decision to continue playing in the long run, as I'd have a lower level of interest in the game as a result. If there is in any way an option to save at least the character data for the players who aren't constantly remaking characters and port that over, that would be great. If not... time will tell if it remains as enjoyable to play as it has been.
  2. Maybe this has been suggested before, but my $0.02 about teleport pads, beacons and rogues/vigilantes, after having been directed here by NCSoft Support staff.

I noticed, when playing a rogue, going blue side, that I would earn teleport beacons for my VG. I thought "Oh that's GREAT! I can invest in a teleport pad to get to where I'm going quickly from my base" -- only to find out that the VG teleport pads don't allow beacons to the blue side of things. With Ouroboros being broken (you can only get to your "native" side copy when using the portal, even if you open it in the opposite side), it's really cumbersome to travel around paragon as a Rogue, or the isles as a Vigilante.

In addition, there are a few zones you can't even get to at all as a rogue, namely the echoes of DA and Galaxy (and for the badge collectors among us, that is a real bummer) unless you get a mission there and use the mission teleporter (that not everyone has).

IMHO it makes no sense at all to be able to earn the beacons for blue zones as a rogue and red zones as a vigilante, and not being able to use them. I would suggest getting some way to use them, either with special teleport pads (would make more sense, story-wise - e.g. getting trusted connection information not shared with the villains/heroes of the group), or by extending the capabilities of current pads and simply checking alignment when used.

Canon-story wise, you could explain this by Arachnos and the Freedom Phalanx having teleport inhibitors for the opposite alignment, or something similar. (it would even open up for some interesting possibilities for story arcs, with villains or heroes hacking their way past this barrier...)
  3. Reading through the posts here, and checking the schedule, I have the following to say:

    - It seems the Villain side of things isn't getting anywhere near the amount of fun as the Hero side. C'mon Mako, you are a Villain Patron! At least make sure the red side gets an organized, fun event?
    - My characters are on North American servers. I am in Europe. Why do I have characters on NA servers? Because that is where my friends play! As a result, the planned whole 3 hours on a strict schedule (if they don't quit early) is in the dead of night for me.

Since most of my characters are Villains and there doesn't seem to be an reasonable time for me to say Hi to the fluffy shark bunny Mako, it looks like this event will completely pass me by. It's been said before, but it would have been better if there were more attack events throughout the day - Mako was mighty pissed at the newscast, you don't think he'd send riled up minions to the shores even when he's not around in person?...

Maybe the coding monkeys should inadvertently press the "revert to i16" button and we'll all have smoother play

  6. Does anyone have an alternate download location for this? I have mega-problems with mega-upload. And it keeps locking me out if something goes wrong... :/

I didn't get a popup, and apart from wanting to keep shadow maps disabled and occlusion low (to keep a playable framerate, especially the shadows are bad on it for this card), Ultra mode works fine. It was just the input, nothing else. ambient animations remained smooth, and the problem occurred regardless of which graphics settings were chosen (even all the way down).

    Thanks for the reply though
  8. I figured out the problem. Seems the new client doesn't like the multimedia keyboard software for my Compaq keyboard. Killing the driver for the extra buttons before starting the test client fixed it.

Although there is some truth to this, a torrent would still have their patch server as a fixed seeding source, so there is always at least as many sources available as they have now.

Add to that the fact that every block downloaded over torrent is checksummed and verified, I think it is a really good suggestion to distribute files, especially the .piggs

  11. Since it seems this is a better, and more active location for what seems to be my issue than the I17 specific forum I initially posted it in, I'll drop the problem here. Sorry for double-posting.

Operating System (Vista, XP, OS X version): Windows XP Pro
User Client (Mac, PC, Linux): PC
    Server: Test rooms (client-wide problem)
    Zone: Any
    Character name: Any

Graphics card: ATI X1600 Pro (AGP)
Drivers: Legacy 9.11 (since 10.2 was discouraged, this is the next one down for this generation of card)

    Bug Description:
Trying to start up a (freshly downloaded) COH testserver client, I run into the problem that, after the extremely slow connection to check from the COH updater, the game loads up, but is extremely unresponsive - even at the login screen. I try to type my name, and password, and with some luck I get one character echoed every 5-15 seconds. It will be like that for a while, then it will briefly have normal frame rate for 5 seconds or so, then back to the total system lockup sluggishness. (even the mouse pointer).

The normal "live" client doesn't display this problem, just the testserver client!

Safe mode displays exactly the same problem.

I patiently poked around a bit more, and it seems to be strictly input related. The moment I click my mouse or press a key, the client chokes up (most of the times -- sporadically, it doesn't) for 5-20 seconds, after which it may or may not accept the input I had given it. If I don't give any further input, mouse pointer responsiveness and animations are smooth.

Any suggestions on how to fix this?

    Other sysinfo:
    CPU Athlon64 3700+ (single core)
    2GB RAM
    PS/2 Mouse (Logitech)
    PS/2 Keyboard
USB graphic tablet (tried with it disconnected, made no difference)

NWN is not an MMOG at all. I'm not even sure what would make you think it is. There are large numbers of people that play it (like say, Morrowind), you can certainly play it online (like for example Diablo), but I wouldn't even begin to consider it an MMOG. It's a single or multiplayer game (it can be an MOG I guess).

I'm not saying that there might not be another MMOG that's done this. I am saying that NWN is not (IMO) an example of same.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Actually, NWN is an MMORPG. The game is no different than CoX in the fact that the people running a server are putting up a virtual world for as many people to connect to at once as their system can handle. The fact that most modules are run on smaller systems and designed to be run on those doesn't mean it's not MMO. The setup is the same. You have modules that can have an indefinite number of areas, extendable content, as many quests as you want to put in and, as said, as many players at once as your server can handle. Each server having their own set of player characters, or multiple characters per player. In addition, in-game- transitions can even be made to point to a different server, making it possible to set up server clusters with a massive world, if you want it (no different than the "big name mmorpgs")...

The fact that the servers happen to be run by individuals and not a company requesting a subscription, is completely besides the point.

Where, exactly, is this not an MMO?
  13. Hey folks,

Just reading up on the Issue 14 update just released, I saw this rather bold statement up top:

"The First MMORPG to Offer User Created Content!"

Well, I don't know about NCSoft's knowledge of the MMORPG market but I beg to differ: there are, and have been, MMORPGs with large followings of players with user-created content. From my own experience: Try, for example, Neverwinter Nights! Full editor, full freedom even down to the system scripting, and a large community of people with custom modules, custom content, custom characters and custom game play (and all officially supported by the game developers as a feature, not as a hack or patch -- it was intended to be used that way_. And that game has been around for how long now?

CoX is definitely not the first, and I think it's rather bad to beat yourself on the chest stating something that is obviously not true. Please don't try to hype it more than it is, folks.
