Quote:There's a simple way they could avoid the "disrespect" to the character you're talking about. All they have to do is establish that Themyscera Industries is a big time contributor to all sorts of charities and worthy causes. I could easily see Wonder Woman being willing to "profit" off of her own name and image if she was able to use the money gained from that to be able to finance disaster relief, disease research, green technologies, homeless shelters and so on.I just want Wonder Woman to be treated with respect. I think this whole "Themyscera Industries" idea isn't treating her with respect. Wonder Woman sells Wonder Woman merchandise? That's intensely self-centered, and goes against everything she stands for. Wonder Woman is about love, honor, forgiveness, generosity, selflessness, strength, and integrity. Not the superficiality that I saw in the pilot synopsis.
I'll watch the first episode and hope that I'm wrong about it not treating Wonder Woman with respect, but from what I've seen, it doesn't look good. -
Quote:Actually based on what's happened over the last several years it seems like the exact reverse to me. I'm guessing Kelly didn't start out with this idea about a "generic superheroine show" and somehow managed to grab the Wonder woman license to try to legitimize it. It seems more like the Wonder Woman license was floating around in limbo waiting for someone to pick it up and try to make something out of it.That makes a lot of sense.
On the other hand, sometimes they actually do get a property and then put somebody that doesn't appreciate it for what it is in charge of it. Maybe Wonder Woman will fight a giant spider in the third episode.
You know, if you replaced "Themyscera Industries" with a law firm, and dropped the triple identity bit, this would probably make a great She-Hulk show. She-Hulk's comics have been light hearted, with her hanging out with friends, partying, and having romance issues, and David E. Kelly certainly knows how to make a light-hearted show about lawyers that like to hang out, party, and have romance issues.
Hell, maybe Fista is right, and he originally wanted to make a She-Hulk show, was turned down by Marvel, and tried to modify it to fit Wonder Woman.
There have been several big names associated with trying to write scripts for Wonder Woman in the last few years. As has been mentioned even people like Joss Whedon were related to the property not too long ago.
My guess is that they finally decided to trust the property to Kelly simply because he has a track record of successful TV shows. Now I'll tell you point-blank I NEVER watched Ally McBeal myself and always thought the concept of the show sounded completely silly. But no one can deny that it had five seasons worth of episodes and was well liked by many people. I guess there's no accounting for taste...
I think the true irony here is that people are going nuts over the slim possibility that Kelly might be able to make a -successful- show out of this mess. We all know the chances that this'll become "Wonder McBeal" is about 99.9% and there are people here who hate that idea with a passion. But what would be worse than someone perverting their beloved amazon warrior into "Wonder Mcbeal" than to have "Wonder McBeal" actually become a popular show? I almost want to see that happen just to laugh.

I remember playing for about two and a half years without the thought that there would ever be a Vet system in this game. That does not now prevent me from thinking the 45 and 69 month awards are the only two awards that don't have anything "unique" related to them and it seems weird that they are the only ones like that. Why do they have to be the only ones to be special enough to be "unspecial"?
-
Quote:We're the experts? Seriously? lolLothic,
It's not armchair we're doing. We're the experts :-)
First, they couldn't afford a "hot" wonder woman.
Second, Lynda Carter comes out of retirement to "bless" the show
Third, this show is being done by NBC. They couldn't even remake the outrageously Successful Bionic Woman into a 2.0 version.
But you want to "give it a chance." I'll live my life while you "critique" the show. When this is all over and they cancel this show in the first season I want you to comeback here and post highlight videos of the "new" wonder woman for all of us to laugh at, ok?
We're a collection of nerds and/or comic books geeks who have collectively chosen to waste our time to talk about a show in a forum that hasn't even aired yet about a fictional comic book hero. If that makes us "experts" on anything then I've seriously underestimated the power of the Internet.
I'm 40 years old and I'm guessing that I've seen dozens of shows come and go long before most people posting on this thread were even born. I'm not naive about the chances of this new show. On the other hand I was dead certain that shows like Smallville were going to be cancelled after "a few episodes" and somehow it managed to last 10 seasons.
I guess my point is there's really not much point in pissing on this show before anyone's seen it. If it sucks as bad as many people assume it's going to it'll be gone soon enough. I'm still going to be happy that it happened at all because at least a recent failure would be better for Wonder Woman than saying "it hasn't been on TV for 32 years". (*drink*)
As far as me bothering to "post a highlight video" I won't have to bother - it'll be on YouTube soon enough regardless.

Quote:I think you skimmed over what I said a little too quickly. I said we all know people would be mad if they removed items from the Vet awards but probably wouldn't mind things being retroactively added. It would be a "good" thing.Where exactly did I say anything that implied I thought people would "scream bloody murder" if the devs added new stuff to the earlier vet rewards?
What I said was that I don't see them adding to the earlier rewards unless it's something that can be added repeatedly like the free character slot we get at 12, 24, 36, 48, etc. Maybe something along the lines of a free server transfer token.
I really don't see a problem with adding anything extra directly to the 45 and 69 month awards, even if it's something as simple as extra inventory slots or the like. I don't really understand why they could only add stuff as long as it was "periodical" like your example. *shrugs* -
Quote:I'll be honest here: It actually doesn't ultimately matter to me if they shot this thing last year. I'm still going to give it a proper chance.Let's all be honest here. This show has EPIC FAIL written all over it. The script is crap and the costume looks like she got it as Party City for Halloween. I think it's pretty obvious strong female/superhero came first with Kelly and then he realised, "Oh wait isn't there some one like that all ready?" All original concept and then he slapped the Wonder Woman name on it for a selling point.
If it sucks based on my ACTUAL experience of having watched it then I will end up being merciless against it. I have no idea if you've ever read my other comments on this forum over the years but I have no problem ripping shows to shreds that actually deserve it.
But until I know this new Wonder Woman show deserves my scorn I'm not going to bother to engage in pointless assumptions and armchair prognostication of its success or failure. I don't need to try to make myself seem "cool" by pre-crapping on something I've never seen before. *shrugs* -
Quote:Lynda Carter loves the new Wonder Woman....go figure!
http://www.rttnews.com/Content/Enter...d=1579995&SM=1That's weird the article's dated today because I could have sworn I read something about Lynda Carter liking the new show like a month ago. Basically that means she said what she said before the new costume appeared, for what that's worth. Anyway I'm sure Lynda's not going to burn any bridges to the new show at this point because even though she says she won't have anything to do with the pilot I'm sure she's angling for a cameo in a later episode.Quote:Note, she never said she liked the new outfit, just that the actress is beautiful and the show sounds good. Total plausible deniability. ;P

Quote:No, this would not be on the "same level" as the Badge-Hunter mods at all. The major problem (and difference) between what you're proposing and what the Badge-Hunter mods do is that the B-H mods exist as file-replacement mods IN-GAME using the preexisting mod system. It's completely inside the game and thus technically under the control and purview of the Devs. Why would you sell it? Theoretically you could sell access to paragon wiki or the like as well, but no one has proposed trying to profit off of it.
It would be on the same level as badge-hunter...much of the same artwork is taken from the game and it has the same legal and ToS issues as a costume interpreter.
Trying to port CoH code/data to be used OUTSIDE of the game on handheld devices is quite a different ballgame. Our Devs would basically have no control over it and thus would easily be deemed a EULA violation. Also even if you personally had no intention to "sell" this new app the fact that it would exist in that handheld world where things could easily become sell-able via third parties would be all kinds of illegal.
Let's put it this way: Your chances of NOT getting banned if you were ever caught being the one behind such a scheme would be just about zero. *shrugs* -
Quote:Wow talk about skating on thin legal ice there.Technically there isn't anything preventing a fan creation of the same type of thing, where one could make a costume creator that pulled all the relevant costumes out of the CoH files, and then synced them into an iPod/iPhone/iPad app.
It would avoid any legal issues that Crytic had with Marvel, and also any current issues since the end user would be doing any extraction of data and placing into their own handheld.
The Devs have tolerated reverse engineering of their code for things like modding out annoying sounds from the game and updating the in-game maps with badge information. But none of those "fan-based creations" ever existed outside the game and certainly never entered an arena that could potentially be sold for actual money.
The idea of a fan-engineered costume editor for CoH that was ported to the "app" world of handheld devices sounds all kinds of illegal to me for all sorts of reasons.

Quote:I'm sorry but I just think your idea of equating playing a few extra hours a week to get these badges in a few months as "grinding" is borderline laughable.Everything is relative. One person's "completely reasonable amount of playtime" is another person's "grinding".
The idea that this could possibly happen seems to be eluding you, so I think I'll just leave it here and agree to disagree.
The Devs already learned plenty of lessons with badges such as Empath and Leader. The Devs already removed close to 80 AE badges on the grounds that they were too "grindy" to earn. Do you really think after all that they would ever put in a new set of badges that, as far as they would be concerned, would ever have close to the same problems?
I understand that your definition of "grinding" appears to be quite a bit different from mine. Frankly with your attitude on it I'm surprised you actually care about trying to earn ANY badges because there are many of them them out there today that require more "effort" than these assistance badges do. Nevertheless the Devs ON PURPOSE wanted to create an enticement to have players keep running additional WSTs after they earned their Notices/XPs to make sure there would be enough teams out there so everyone else had a chance to earn them during the course of a given week. Why on earth would they ever choose to invalidate that enticement via your suggestion is beyond me.
But don't let me stop you. Make your case to the Devs and convince them that their thoughts on the matter are misguided. Just seriously don't hold your breath that this is going to be changed soon if ever. -
Quote:I've decided I'm going to wait to judge this Wonder Woman costume once the actual show is put on the air. As you imply it's quite likely things will be different once this evolves from the "pre-production pilot" phase to the "live TV show" phase.I don't care for the color choices, but as for the plastic look, bear in mind that the first shots we saw of Thor's movie outfit had the same problem. He looked great in the actual trailers, though. I don't know if it's something they do in post-production or a lighting thing or what, but it's very possible the costume won't look so artificial in the actual show.
I would agree that high heels would never be realistic for an actual live action superheroine but that fact has never stopped the comic book writers before.Quote:I think the high heels are not going to go over well in live action. They should have gone with a heavier tread and more practical design, something like what Batwoman has in the comics.
Turns out during the 1970s Wonder Woman shows they constantly had Lynda Carter switching between high heeled boots and flat-soled boots depending on what the scene was having her do. It was fairly obvious any time Lynda was running/jumping around she was wearing flat-soled boots and then a second later (while standing still) she'd be wearing boots with heels. It'll be interesting to see how they handle that in this new show.

Quote:Why should only the TF/SF leader get the glory of being listed? I don't technically have anything against people who like to do speed runs, but enforcing the "competition" aspect amongst individuals with an arcade game styled score list just doesn't seem appropriate for this game for all sorts of reasons.1. An idea from GW - lists of top performers for task forces.
We currently have a large number of players who do "speed" task forces. How about a list of the top ten 10 times listed by the TF leader's name? Be nice to have a little competition to see who can complete in the shortest time. Perhaps two lists: top 10 for regular mode and top 10 for "Master of".
People who like speed running already share their "best times" amongst themselves anyway. Why would I care what the current best times are when I don't personally care about record-setting speed runs?
On some level it'd be nice to have this detail. But again there are probably too many problems associated with it to make it a worthwhile effort from our Devs.Quote:2. Sound. Voices.
"That other game" has voices for practically everything - npcs, mobs, dungeon bosses, etc. Whereas, in CoH, all we have is text. I'd love to hear Nemesis' aristocratic sneering voice, Dr. Aeon's mad scientist cackle, Vanessa Devore's sultry evil voice, etc. How about adding an optional downloadable "sound pack" that would at least add these things to TFs. At a minimum, the cut scenes could have voices. I realize that adding voices for regular mobs outside of TFs would make the client too fat , but for just TFs - it shouldnt be too bad.
Yes I've seen many of the cutscenes a million times myself. But until you can suggest a good way to handle skipping them for the entire team I'm not sure there's really a "solution" to this issue. -
Quote:Your suggestion/desire here is pretty clear enough to me. But for some reason the idea that it'll never happen seems to be eluding you.1. "Not having time to grind TFs" != "not having the ability to not die on a TF". These are completely different requirements and not analogous in the slightest except via strawman.
2. It would still BE an assistance badge because you're not getting any other reward for it. I don't know how I can make this any clearer.
3. Many grindy badge requirements have already been reduced so it's not like there's no precedence for this. Your argument is the same as "well it's too bad you don't have the time to hunt down 10,000 Rikti monkeys or craft 10,000 recipes, guess you can't have those badges".
Bottomline many (if not most) TF/SFs can now be run in around an hour or so, even by random PUG teams. I think it's going to be incredibly hard for you to convince the Devs that playing for an extra hour or two a WEEK is a valid definition of "grinding". It's true a handful of badges have be modified because they were retroactively deemed to be too grindy. Your attempt to lump the assistance badges into that category is interesting, but very likely futile.
I hapeen to be one of those people who earned every badge in this game under their "original" requirements (10,000 Rikti, 10,000 recipes, 1 billion HPs healed, etc.). These assistance badges are no where close to being as bad as what you're implying. If you can't play often enough to earn the 50 TF/SF assistance badge in a reasonable amount of time (and I'd say 4-6 months is reasonable for most people) then maybe you shouldn't really worry about trying to get it in the first place. *shrugs* -
Quote:As an FYI you ought to consider using the Test server to try out new builds. I copy characters over there, respec into all sorts of crazy ideas, and then when I'm ready I'll respec them "for real" on the live servers. Keeps you from "wasting" any respec tokens. When I've respeced my main so many times (and I found it really suckie when I found out I could only buy and use only one Respec with Candy Canes), and still find myself respecing, but I'm out of respecs from my vet rewards (going on 75 month next month), free ones, trials, even the one handed to me for the patron arc...I really really wish I had more respecs. As buying a respec recipe seems like a waste (I could buy a good IO) and I dont want to pay the 9.99 real money for one either.

Now, I don't need that many on every character, but when it's my main in question...I just love em!
-
Quote:At this point I'm not seriously suggesting they STOP giving us respecs in the progression they established. I'm just saying that respecs make for such trivial Vet awards that I don't think they can stand on their own as the "only" thing we get for a particular month. Basically I'm saying that all we got for the 45 and 69 month awards were "stocking stuffers", not actual awards.Except that the progression for vet rewards always includes a respec every 12 months starting at 9 months (just like you get a free character slot for all awards that are a multiple of 12). Now admittedly the 45 and 69 are the first respec awards that come with nothing else but if they hadn't had a respec we'd have got people complaining about that.
I'm sure people would scream bloody murder if the Devs ever removed items from particular Vet awards but do you think anyone would really mind if they retroactively ADDED more to any of them?Quote:To the best of my knowledge the only time the devs have gone back and retroactively added vet rewards was when they added the annual free character slots. So unless it's something that could be added to the annual rewards I don't see this happening.

The costume sliders need "tick marks" on a 1-100 scale so if I want (for example) to set all of my characters' shoulders to the "37" mark it would be a trivial matter to move the sliders to that precise setting. The current vague no-numbers scheme has been completely maddening for years now.
I'm aware of how to edit the text files to get around this deficiency. But honestly it's pretty sad that we have to go that far just to accomplish something that should have part of the in-game GUI years ago.

Quote:Not only was it only intended for the "City of Hero" Korean version of the game but even there it was only available to be downloaded for about a week or so before it was permanently pulled. If there was nothing "wrong" with it being available then why did they pull it back so relatively quickly and why have the Devs done everything in their power since then to more or less act as if it never happened? They also made it for release in Korea only. This could mean several things, but one of them is that the settlement language only restricted them in America, where the lawsuit was held, and could not touch their activities in Korea.Quote:Please go back and read my post. They released an actual standalone costume creator. Not hypothetically, it was an actual thing, and it happened after the lawsuit.
I wish I could find some reference to this on the wiki but unsurprisingly I can't, probably due to how little interest there was in it.
The general consensus about what happened is that having a standalone costume creator available (albeit indirectly) for the NA/EU markets was in fact something that was prohibited in the Marvel settlement. When the Devs realized that people around the world had found the Korean version it was quickly taken off-line to minimize the damage.
Based on these circumstances I suspect we will never have an updated, official standalone creator in any other form.

No, regular merits are not affected by alignment shifts in any way.

Quote:I think there are some people out there who wanted something like Inherent Fitness so badly for so long that they have trouble processing the idea that not -everyone- cared about it as much as they did. This falls under the category of "Mind your own business and don't worry about my build." If I've done something crazy like take only the first power from my secondary, or take 4 travel powers, then MAYBE it's reasonable for you to comment. If my build works and you're just going to quibble about specific power choices, then take a hike.

Since it happened I've respec'd a few of my characters to take advantage of it. But frankly if it had never happened I would not be sitting here now wishing for anything even remotely like it. -
Well even if it is legitimate there's still plenty of time for it to evolve before it actually gets filmed.
Theoretically the finished product may even be WORSE than that.
That's why I don't usually get too excited about pilot scripts one way or the other in general.
I just let the people who like to pull knee-jerk reactions cry "insta-doom" over them because they are going to do that regardless. -
-
Quote:Yeah I'm aware of those links. Still doesn't discount the idea that a "recent failure" for Wonder Woman would be infinitely better in the minds of the world than a "32 year limbo".
-
Quote:This is kind of where I'm coming at it from. Even if this "attempt" at Wonder Woman only lasts for a season or so it'll be the first season of Wonder Woman TV shows we'll have had in 32 years. Even a failure at this point will get her "back on the radar" so to speak and make this chances of a "better" version of Wonder Woman not take another 32 years to happen.I doubt I'll be too into this series given the tone they seem to be leaning toward, but I'm all for them giving it a try. If nothing else it'll at least get the Wonder Woman name back in the public eye, and if the more faithful comic book movies stay popular, we might get a good WW movie outta it.
-
Quote:If these things remain unchanged for the -many- months they still have to work on it I might be willing to make that guess as well. The costume looks a bit cheap. The script is pretty bad too. I give it a season.
But I'm also thinking if any one of us had the predictive certainty about these things as you claim to have then I'd bet you could have an instant high-paying job in the TV industry planning their future shows.
-
Well I don't know about you but I'm not willing to assume this attempt is going to fail until it does.
We've already waited 32 years for another "shot" at it - I don't really feel like waiting another 32 years. *shrugs*
