Im currently leveling an AR/Ice blaster and I have two potential builds I can follow one caps ranged defense and one caps S/L defense. Purpose is (eventually) to sit behind an Ice Patch and laugh manically as I Full Auto mobs.
With both builds I can fit in all the powers I really want (Full Auto, Build Up, Ice Patch, Flamethrower, and Ignite). In the ranged-capped build I can fit in a few more LoTG recharges and have Full Auto up a bit faster. But the ranged-capped build is a bit tight in slots. In the S/L capped build, theres a bit more room with the slots and I can get Slug and Buckshot (I do like Buckshot too, just dont absolutely need it) the slotting I want for them.
So .. with all else being equal, would you choose to cap ranged defense or S/L defense? I cant see a huge difference between them, aside from the fact that I might have to avoid Carnies with a S/L capped build.
TIA for any thoughts, inputs, or forum wisdom. -
Quote:What's the drop rate for these in PVP? Is it as atrocious as I'd expect, or is a dual box solution worth it here? You have 2 options to get one within the next couple months:
A) Find one OFF the market you can buy from someone (this will cost you MORE than 2 billion, in all likelyhood). Your odds of finding one you can afford are probably pretty slim if you haven't already been farming influence or playing the market.
B) Run Tip missions and hoard your Alignment merits. You can buy one direct from the A merit box in Fort Trident/The Crucible. It will cost you a crap ton (30 or more A merits) but it's guaranteed to get you what you want. -
Hmm, well since you're asking... went down to the basement and checked - really dusty, but still there are my original CoH box, my CoV box (and a big binder, was that extra?), the second CoV box I bought when they were on mega-discount and I mistakenly thought I could get a cheap $5 month for my main account, my GvE box, and my GR box. I even had to unsub for 2.5 years while back in school and I'm not living in the same house I was seven years ago; weird at times the stuff you choose to keep.
Now that you mention it, should I be peeved that I don't have any boxes for the booster packs I bought? Maybe I could get them to send me a spare box or two...
Glad you got it all sorted out, though. It shouldn't be an actual requirement to hang on to the box forever. -
My only internet connection is through my Sprint cellphone. Had a dedicated cell line with a usb aircard, but dropped that line and switched to phone-only when I got a phone that could handle it. At 3g speeds, CoH is totally playable, but big updates are a minor pain and I get mapserved if/when I get an incoming call.

Quote:I know that ERP means Enterprise Resource Planning, but I thought that Strategic Business Unit was SBU, not SUB. Perhaps the player who made the comment was frustrated by a bit of dyslexia and they took their anger out on you?... when in her bio it says only:
I cant really say it on public forums, but I am assuming that ERP, and Sub do not have anything to do with Submarines.
Or, alternate hypothesis, they were into corporate consultancy and everyone knows those people are only nice to the CEOs that sign their paycheck.
In either case, as everyone else has already noted, you are totally fine using the tools the Devs made available as long as there is no IP infringement. Too bad that player upset you, though. Consultants yeesh. -
Gigabyte's GV-N560OC-1GI... I did want a GV-N560SO-1GI (the one that's clocked a bit higher), but they weren't in stock and I was tired of waiting.

Thanks a lot for all the advice. Just ordered a GTX 560Ti. Too cheep to pay for next day so I have to wait a week for it to arrive, but looking forward to the improved visuals.

Quote:That's exactly what I was looking for. TYVM for the information.Pro Tip: New and Quick Start-up Desktop Icons
2. In the Properties window, you can add many of the old command line tags you use to with the shortcut to the old launcher. For the blue Hero skin, leave it blank or use -uiskin 0. For the red Villain skin, use -cov or -uiskin 1. For the gold GR skin, use -uiskin 2. Hit the OK button when done.
3. For each Desktop Shortcut Icon, you can customize which icon to show. Right click on the shortcut and in the pop up menu, chose Properties. In the main or shortcut tab, look for the "Change Icon" button and click it. If you get an error message or only one icon to chose from, click the Browse button and navigate to the cityofheroes.exe file in your main City of Heroes directory. You should now see a choice of five icons to use. Chose the one you want for each client's/server's shortcut. -
I upgraded the most of innards of my computer about a year and a half ago (i7 950 CPU @ 3.07GHz, 3 GB ram), but at the time I just kept my old graphics card, which is a geforce 8500 GT.
Now with new geforce 580 / 570 / 560 Ti cards on the market, I'd like to be able to run CoH with some of the bells and whistles enabled. In addition to some (or most) of the ultra (?) settings, the other big thing for me is that Id like to increase the distance of the world draw view a bit so that the buildings and various landscape items dont seem like they pop up out of nowhere.
The only other things that my computer gets used for are spreadsheet work, web browsing & email, and streaming Netflix to a 1080p TV (but the streaming is done via the RGB output). My current monitor runs at 1280 x 1024 - and when not streaming Netflix - the graphics card will only be used to drive one monitor. I guess I could play on the 1080p TV Im just used to sitting at a desk / normal computer when playing CoH. I might try it on the TV when I get a new card that does HDMI out. So 1280 x 1024 monitor or 1080p LCD TV are the two possible output scenarios for the new card.
Given that background, and also given that I have no interest in AMD due to a bad experience in the past, would I notice any difference between a geforce 570 and a geforce 560 Ti? The reviews on the 560 seem to say that its almost as fast as a 570 and there are a few factory overclocked 560 Tis on the market, too. I wont be playing Crysis 2 or 5 or whatever; no Call of Duty or anything like that just CoH and non-gaming applications so I dont think I need a geforce 580 (ok, I did play Dragon Age Origins and might play the sequel, but even the 8500 GT seemed ok with that).
Appreciate any thoughts or recommendations as to if the extra cost of a geforce 570 would show any dramatic increase in CoH graphical quality over going with a 560 Ti. I think the CPU and RAM are enough for the game right now? Thanks in advance for the advice. -

It might not apply to your specific situation but if you have cell phone reception, playing with a teathered phone as your connection works pretty well. We live far enough out to where there is no cable and dsl can't reach but we do have cell coverage. I've played CoH both via a dedicated aircard through a router and now via just a regular cell phone in usb teathered mode and both work quite well.

Go to Talos and open you map.... the entrance to DA is marked with a red dot.

Quote:Not a Fire tank, but a Fire/Dev blaster is the fastest ride to 50. OMGWTFBBQ Smoke Grenade is so awesome.Of course many different powersets have been offered up since the beginning, so I was thinking today about the sets and, particularly, the combos that used to be staples "back in my day." What are your thoughts about them now? (I started in i3, so I think of the Heroes as the classics. Your point of view may differ)
Do you still love your Fire tank and think it is "one of the fastest ways to 50"?
Do Spines/Regen Scrappers still make you want to rip into a villain?
Is your Fire/Kin Troller always the leader of your team and do fight with him while others doorsit because you are just that good?
What do you consider to be the classics and do you find them just as fun as you did years ago?
My first hero was an Ice/Ice blaster, and I still like playing that powerset. Classic to me though, is an Invulnerable tank. Not my favorite powerset to play, but tanks should be 'invulnerable' and it reminds me the whole superman type of superhero. -
Quote:I play on Triumph too, but my connection is via a tethered cell phone... so the fact it's not as crowded as Freedom or Virtue works for me. YMMV.I play on Triumph too. I don't stand around waiting to see someone to decide if people are there with all the zones and instanced missions because I don't expect people to come to where I am to let me know they are there.
Or do you think you just form teams and wander around Atlas Park so people can see you? -
Quote:I PM'd Castle about this (if Choking Cloud accuracy could be enhanced) back in Dec. 2007 and his reply was "NOTHING improves that chance. It's a hard coded part of the power. Sorry."One potential issue to watch out for is that, even though it doesn't take accuracy enhancements, it is *not* auto-hit and in fact only has base accuracy. Thus, if you actually want to use it you'll need to do something to ensure it can hit its targets. It doesn't accept accuracy enhancements, but anything that boosts your tohit (such as tactics or the kismet +6% tohit IO) will affect it. Also, although I haven't tested this myself, both accuracy set bonuses and multi-aspect hold set IOs with accuracy components *should* work.
Still like Choking Cloud a lot, though, when it's slotted up with end/hold and psi procs IOs. -
Quote:Be a Forcefield (or Empathy) defender that hardly uses their secondary. If you took /ice as your secondary, you could use the Freeze Ray hold (which does tiny damage) and Bitter Freeze Ray (which does a bit more damage. What toon that would come closest to not doing any damage BUT at the same time be as useful on a team as most any other toon.
I suspect that 0 damage would be impossible because many holds and immobs have a dmg component.
I'd see Forcefield as being more in line with a pacifist as you would be preventing damage. Empathy heals damage which, to me, is more like a medic & a medic may or may not be a pacifist.
It might be a bit hard to find teams as not every PUG knows how much a FF defender increases heir defense. It could also possibly be the most boring hero to play...ever. You would always have to team to get any exp, but if that's how you want to spend you time in CoH then power to you. -
Quote:Well there was this power called Smoke Grenade....... but I'm told that was a 'fix'.Did the Devs forget to screw this pairing up? When does the nerf hit? i19?
I like AR a lot but prefer it with /ice as opposed to /dev. My AR/Ice blaster was one of the funest I've taken to 50. Fast charging nuke, ice patch, flamethrower and ignite for S/L resistant mobs..... lots of fun & didn't think the + 40 game was bad at all. -
Been having the same problem... you'd think after 2.5 years away they'd let me re-sub.
Anyway, was using Firefox with adblock. Got the 'risk management' error when trying to re-sub the game account and also when trying to buy a booster pack. Tried turning adblock off, tried using Explorer, always got the risk management error.
This morning I was able to use the store to renew (and buy a booster pack).
In my situation, initially I had an old credit card on file. That credit card has been canceled years ago (identity theft is a bad thing...) and I was trying to pay with a different card. I tried just picking the 'pay with different card' option and that was when I was getting all the risk management errors.
I then went to account management and tried to change the card on file. But that process also errored out, only with a different error (just an internal plaync website error, I wasn't buying anything... just changing the card on file in account management).
So I deleted the old credit card that was on file. Then I went into the game account and re-subscribed to the game with the new credit card. And it worked without any issues.
YMMV, and maybe I finally just caught the store at a good moment, but hope that helps some. -
Quote:Energy can work ok on teams - if you go the hover / blaster route then your knockback turns into knockdown and ends up being good mitigate that doesn't make the tank angry. If you don't hover you can always be careful with your positioning and knockbackback into walls or obstacles... but hover makes it a lot easier for Energy when/if you team.well, I decided to make an energy/energy blaster. I'm level 6 and despite the slow leveling speed I'm having fun so far. The knockback is providing plenty of mitigation and I can kill things quite quickly. I'm not sure I'd want to play energy blast on a team, but solo it's really nice.

Quote:AR is problematic due to its mostly S/L damage, but one of the most enjoyable blasters I played was AR / Ice. Ice Patch + Ignite is great. But it's also unfortunately not much help in Praetoria.... hopefully you'd be playing this blaster past lvl 20?Ice/Energy sounds like a great combination. Hell, play what you want. I would say the only powersets that might give you trouble while soloing in Praetoria are Archery, Assault Rifle, and Dual Pistols. I found they did not perform as well against the Clockwork that are present in so many missions over there. And if you don't have your heart set on /Energy, you may want to consider a secondary with a ST immob. as the tier 1 power. It keeps Ghouls out of melee range, which changes them from hard-hitting beasts to weak rock-throwing enemies that you can defeat with ease.

Actually you could be onto something here. Every company should have a couple kids in the office for meetings. Kids have a great talent for grasping those little logical loopholes and just ASKING the question. It could be a whole new management style!

(1) Flame Learned To Read
At the tender age of five, I let Flame play on my second account on my laptop beside me. For a while, I had to tell her what the train destiantions were, what the NPCs were saying and what the villains name were.
It was only mere months before Flame didn't need my help anymore. We were playing one summer evening and I noticed that she wasn't asking me to read things. I looked over at her screen and watched her for a bit. I was intrigued she knew where to go.
"Need any help reading, honey?" I asked.
"Nope. I can read nope. That says Atlas Park and that says Steel Canyon. Those are Clockworks, but I like calling them Clickey Clacks." she replied quite happilly.
Her teacher was quite surprised at the headstart she had on her reading skills. When I informed the teacher that Flame's headstart was the result of playing a superhero online game, I got the weirdest look. Oh well.
Now, at six, I can hear Flame reading slowly over the mission text and the NPC dialogue. She cannot type yet, but if we get on a team together, I usually do the talking for both of us.

Great story - my son is six and he seems to pick up most of his education from things that interest him and from things that he actively wants to learn...
- he started writing a lot more when my wife and I stopped taking notes for his birthday / Christmas lists. We'd go into a store with a lot of paper and let him take all the time he needed to write out what he wanted. Yesterday he was on giant microbe's website and created a literal book (folded pages, front cover, etc) of the other stuffed microbes 'friends' his current set of stuffed microbes would like to have join their family.
- he started writing out math problems long hand (addition & subtraction at this stage) when he was trying to add up some numbers in a computer game. Now he knows how to write a problem in column format, the difference between 1's, 10's, 100's, 1,000's etc, and about carrying numbers when you add.
So you never know when education is going to strike; it doesn't have to be in a formal school environment. -

Badge! Badge! Badge!
Come on guys! join in!
[/ QUOTE ]
No thanks. There's already one can of worms being opened with charging for costumes and emotes. If they threw in a badge with it, it would open up a whole new can of worms with accusations of trying to extort money from badge hunters.
IMHO, given that they're going to charge for something, this is exactly the right way to have done it. Maybe throw in some kind of prestige power, but certainly not a badge. I didn't like the RMT for the VIP badges, and I wouldn't like it if they did it again.
As for the event itself, I'm looking forward to it. I'll be there.
[/ QUOTE ]
This is exactly why I didn't put a badge in this pack.
[/ QUOTE ]
Actually, if you would have put the VIP badge in the pack, I would have bought it.
As I understand it, the VIP pack is EBay-ish hard to find item and you don't know if the serial code's been used or not when you buy in that situation.
I got interested in badging after the VIP was no longer available. So a new badge in the current pack would not have been too great, but making the old one available again would have been nice. -

Um ... have you never watched Invader Zim ...?
[/ QUOTE ]
No, I have not. Which is an example of why when discussing things that have a bit of a hot button feel to them, it's probably better to overtly state what you mean instead of a reference to something that you are familiar with in your own specific culture.
I still don't know what was trying to be said, what point it made, or how it added content to the discussion.
Perhaps in Invader Zim people say "I apologize if I came across the wrong way, let's have a reasonable discussion on this" and then the protagonist runs around singing a song? Or he(?) sings and she(?) likes singing and thought this was a thread about singing? Or "doom" in Invader Zim-speak means "wow, you're right." Or instead of trying to calmly and rationally stating what the issues were to me I should run around yelling doom and I should be as hostile as people seem to intimate posters are being? Quite baffling, or maybe I'm just the perfect straight man today.
