data usage

Hey, im wondering how much data usage this game would use for normal play of around 20 hours a week. I dont have dsl service at my house but i can get a wireless card that has a 5gig data usage plan but i dont know how much that would actually cover for playing the game. if anyone can tell me how much data usage a game normally uses, this game in particular i would be very appreciative or if any of you use a wireless card can tell me how it works and if 5 gigs a month would be enough to cover playing. thanks.

5 Gb/month over 20 hours give you a theoretical sustained maximum of 146kbit/s if I've done my maths right - ((5*1024*1024)/(80/60/60))*8 - though real-world usage with overheads will probably make it a bit less than that.

Game usage is, give or take, about 30-80kbit/s depending on what's going on, which is about 2Gb/80 hours. So, I'd say it's doable, but you'd have to be careful with your non-CoH usage so as not to hit your limit as you can get through 2.5Gig of data pretty quick if you're not paying attention .

At 5GB/month you're likely to go over the limit. Just COH would probably (I don't have any exact figures but since it's playable over dialup the transfer can't be all that high) be ok but when you add email, web browsing and other file downloads that 5GB/month doesn't cover a lot.

COH has just been murdered by NCSoft. http://www.change.org/petitions/ncso...city-of-heroes

no this would just be for city of heroes and world of tanks, just for playing. i would not actually use it for internet, i got a iphone and work computer for that. lol.

My only internet connection is through my Sprint cellphone. Had a dedicated cell line with a usb aircard, but dropped that line and switched to phone-only when I got a phone that could handle it. At 3g speeds, CoH is totally playable, but big updates are a minor pain and I get mapserved if/when I get an incoming call.

I've been buying prepaid access a bit lately - 5GB / month would seem ample for just City of Heroes. I run out of time before my 4GB in a month runs out.

I don't suffer from altitis, I enjoy every minute of it.

Thank you Devs & Community people for a great game.

So sad to be ending ):

Is that 5GB downstream only or both ways?

I play about twice that much AND I use my computer for everything. My downstream is just under 10GB per month but total (up and down) is over 11.

Code:
Month down total
Feb 9.44 11.25
Jan 9.65 11.33
Dec 9.90 12.31
Nov 9.80 11.87
If you do end up going that route, you should get the program I run that gives me these exact figures: BitMeter. It can give you a breakdown by day or month and all kinds of charting options.

I still come up with 3GB down per month. Toss in a 100MB a month on average for patches (yes that's Issue sized patches). Problem then is web browsing and forum access (animated avatars can be a b****).

Using the somewhat large 10KB/s as an average.

20 hrs/week = 72,000s x 10 KB/s = 720,000 KB/w

720,000 KB/w / 7 * 365 / 12 = 3,128,528 KB/m / 1024 / 1024 = 2.98 GB/m
