Yeah, it requires explaining. That was what was being discussed.

Fiery Assault doesn't require explaining: you use fire to hurt people. Earth Alteration: you augment earth in many ways. Nature Alteration is different because Plants are not intrinsically associated with Regeneration.

But the same goes for Gravitic Alteration (just because you control gravity, doesn't make you invulnerable...it requires explaining) and Energy Alteration (that also uses gravity control).

That said, there's also the option of just renaming the armor powers of this AT or just make new ones. Armor powers are probably the easiest to make anyway (just requires a looping fx around the body).

In character interaction refers to the roleplaying or story aspects of the game. This is where Facepalm Defense comes into play or the animal form discussion. From an in-character standpoint the ridiculous nature of these suggestions brings to question the seriousness of all other plot elements. A Dog with a broadsword in it's mouth or a cannon strapped to it's back can defeat Lord Nemesis. So why did the US military fail so spectacularly on Brass Monday? "It's a super dog!" Not if it's got the "Natural" Origin.

Just emphasizing that point so you don't go feeling what you're saying is fact but nothing more than an opinion (and I'm not gonna get goaded into a counter argument over a close-minded opinion). Don't even need to go pointing out the list of animal heroes or heroes that can transform into animal or animal-like creatures or animal/monster enemies....

The topic at hand was a Melee/Ranged and Control/Defense AT. Bringing up Empathy just came out of left field, that's all.
The point was, Plant isn't conceptually linked to regen. In that regard, 'Nature Alteration' is more conceptually confining than a similar set fusion like Fire Melee+Fire Blast = Fiery Assault.

    Energy Aura?

    Energy Aura advantages:
-Skippable powers. You can skip the resist passives or conserve power or even Overload (in Stalker's case) after you cap your defenses.
-Pool Friendly. Once you get Energy Drain, you can skip the fitness pool without major adjustment to slotting. The only other defense set that can do that without sweating is Ice Armor, IIRC.
-Steadfast protection mule. You got a passive with +res to stick that extra +3% def IO. SR has to take 2 powers for that.

Oh, yeah I forgot about FoN. But most of the time I forget about Unstoppable too >_>

But the rest of those powers are 'force' powers...as in 'Force Field' powers.

    Quote:
What? No! Not Empathy. Plant Armor, which was a great powerset suggestion. Where the heck did you get Empathy for a Control/Defense set?!
I was talking about any powersets, not just control, defense or buff. The only thematic paring, IMO, that requires no explaining, no customization of colors, etc for Regeneration is Empathy. Both tend to boil down to healing on a molecular level or something.

As for talking about a Melee/(de)buff AT, eh, I guess I can shut up about it. Although I feel this AT moves close to the same team niche as the melee/buff but brings team multiplier into the mix...it'd basically be an offensive corruptor with melee and armor or a team-friendly scrapper with buffs/debuffs.

Not to say the Marauder AT isn't good but controls can fail and there's a point where more control doesn't help as much...that said, Doms come close to this. With IOs and power selections, they can be pretty tough (i.e. doesn't shatter at a light breeze) while still bringing the damage and controls.

    1. Animal bodies - well you walked into that suggestion not caring about it anyway. It's a given you wouldn't care for anything not the same as your opinion.

    2. Rainbow blast - any talk is better than nothing. really, I didn't care for my idea either but I do like discussing them. but you let it die...

    3. 'Armor' armor - dunno why you'd refer to that. I was simply acknowledging others arguments on the subject. So not sure how that lacks thematic focus or in-character interaction...

    4. Phase armor - ah forgot about that. but I'm not sure we ever got past the 'phase = godmode' argument. IMO, yes, it's 'effective' but it's not end-all-be-all. And armor sets are built to be 'effective' so...

    5. Phantom Aura - see, that set of mine is a good example of what I'd like all suggestion sets to be. OP has a specific theme in mind, forms a suggestion and everyone comes in and posts their opinion and shapes it into something that isn't crap. I'm not afraid to admit what I 1st suggested there was bad but the result was not-as-bad...

    6. Plant Armor - still don't think that set really stands out. A mez toggle isn't unique either.

In conclusion...meh, I thought you were talking about my 'Suggestions'. That said, I'm still not sure what 'in-character interaction' means in the context of what you said...but I try to keep my 'ideas' as unique as possible. If it's not something impossible with what we have, I don't even bother posting it...
  6. Quote:
I honestly have -no- problem with you, personally, whatsoever. your ideas sometimes seem conceptually off, or they don't work within the framework of in-character interaction.
I resent that. You say 'ideas' but I only recall the 1 you seem at odds with. Even then, you forget that the idea itself wasn't 'conceptually off', just something you didn't agree with nor do I recall anyone saying that idea wouldn't work in some way. As far as I could tell, the idea worked, just no one wanted it.

    Quote:
Now with the Control sets in mind I looked into the Defensive pairings. For Gravity it was fairly easy: Consigliere. Some of the Family and Mook bosses are Invuln/Grav enemies. It also makes sense, thematically, that a person manipulating Force would take less damage from physical attacks their could effect, while not taking much less damage from Energy effects.
Actually, the Consigliere weren't Inv/Grav. In fact, no one in the Family uses Invulnerability, they use Super Reflexes and at that, SR/Grav/Super Strength is their bag.

Besides that, I don't think Invulnerability, in particular, is Force. Sure, there's Force Mastery but if I recall, it only has the 1 shield (Temp Invul) and the rest are really force powers.

    Quote:
As for what to do about people who don't want to have specific powers in a set... There's nothing you can do. but the same can be said for -every- powerset. I don't, generally, use Grant Cover from Shield Defense. I don't like Snipe attacks of any kind, really. I think Repel is just about useless in most cases... but they're still there. I guess the answer is: If you want to make a plant controller who flings thorns but doesn't have Regeneration: Make a Plant Dominator.
The difference is, Shield Defense's Grant Cover is a part of the set. Snipes are apart of those sets, etc. The proposed idea is a combo of 2 different sets. IMO, it'd be akin to making a Dual Pistols and Dark melee combo for Dark Assault and if they don't fit your concept you can just take what does.

On the other hand, Regeneration is purely healing damage. The only logical paring that has no thematic discrepancies is Empathy. Because you can heal and buff yourself's regen and pass the same ability to an ally.

But of course, this is all my opinion. Making a melee/(de)buff AT would have a similar issue. What support powers would one pair with Invulnerability or Super Reflexes (maybe gadgets) or what armor set would one pair with Storm Summoning?

    >
Actually, I think of it more like a melee/all buff AT. Basically, for sets like Icy Survival (can't think of a good name except that), the set would have some of the self buffs of Ice armor and some of the (de)buffs of Ice Domination. The set self-limits its potiential by splitting your buff power focus between yourself and your team.
  8. I'd like to comment on this, but I don't know if you've got some Grudge against me, Spunkette. You always seem rather...vocal about your stance when I'm in the picture...don't know why. I can argue with someone like Samuel_Tow and still not be on his bad side...

Anyway, the idea is intriguing but I have conceptual issues with the pairings. For sets like Ice Alteration, Electric Alteration, Fire Alteration and even Energy Alteration, there's not much problem. But stuff like Nature Alteration, Gravitic Alteration, it creates pairings that reach a bit further than necessary.

If a character wants to use this AT for a plant themed character, Regeneration may not 'fit' or alternatively, if they wanted a regen themed character, plant may not fit. And what about things like Super Reflexes or Shield Defense?

Personally, for this AT, I'd look into maybe a defense/buff type combo for the secondary but even there, the concepts begin to reach. Perhaps just pure defense secondary with a combo of range (or melee) and control for the primary? Anyway, that's my overall opinion. But then I've heard more pleas for a melee/buff combo so looking at it from that angle.

Yup, you're right. That's why I suggested a set with changes in-line with the AT's style and strategies (removing Phalanx Fighting (what kind of strategic assassin fights in a phalanx!?) Grant Cover and Against all Odds with Hide, Strike! and Block!).

The whole Gauntlet thing was since the set would function uniquely, it could have a unique look too not to mention usable with those sets that can't be paired with Shield Defense.

Since discussion in the thread, the idea of extending the gauntlet option to the other melees as a customize option of SD was put on the table. But since posters like Thirty-seven and Steampunkette are reluctant to actually discuss that, put them on the list as people who think Claw/SD Brutes or Dual Blade/SD scrappers are 'retarded' and don't want you to have them

Perhaps add in enemy faction discussion and how they're distributed across origin/level (how many mutant groups are there again? Devouring Earth?).

By that logic, ninja blade, broadsword or any costume piece that isn't suppose to be your skin is inappropriate for a Stalker to use because there would be a floating sword, a floating hat, a pair of floating glasses, etc.

This isn't some sort of conceptual brick wall here. What I think is (see, I put an uncertainty statement in there but the following is backed up by critical thinking and reason conjecture) you simply have an irrational hate toward stalkers. Because every hater of the AT that makes up this argument is ultimately trying to stifle future sets available to them. No doubt so they're not 'ganked' by a Fire melee or SD stalker or something?

But if we're using logic here, no, a Stalker, if they could turn invisible, can do the same for all their equipment (sword, shield, armor, hands).

    Quote:
Or, worse, Facepalm Defense. "I hide behind my hand!" You even wrote "Peek A Boo!" in the description of the power! Are all the enemies in the game infant level intelligence, now? Where putting a hand in front of your face is enough to convince them you've gone away?
Did you read the other power descriptions? Yeah, there's a brash, 'I don't care', in-your-face tone to all the powers. With the sentence structure and vocab in there, you'd figure people would grasp that you're not hiding behind your hand but rather appearing with a large hand out of nowhere.

    Quote:
How about a strange and odd suggestion! Try developing a stalker set -without- hide! Give it 2 placate powers, instead. And have one of the placate powers basically revolve around interposing that titanic arm between yourself and your target. Now you can freely give the set -more- defense than any other stalker gets, since he's got to survive combat until most enemies are down before he can use Assassin's Strike. One placate instead of Hide, and one Placate from their primary powerset. It might be ugly. But it's better than Facepalm.
Interesting premise. It's actually partially the angle I was going. But I didn't want to remove hide because hide is integral to a Stalker's style for both offense and defense. It's the whole idea of Assassin's Strike too considering it's interrupt-able.

But notice from my OP the powers Strike! and Block! do exactly what you're talking about. Strike! buffs ToHit passively, Block! is basically putting your shield up to stop incoming attacks for a short time and activates a pseudo-placate offensive buff in Strike!. Similar mechanics to Placate activating Hide's assassination ability.

Can't remember who or where but I remember reading one of the devs saying they'd proliferate every set to every applicable AT, i.e. Blasters will get Dark Blast, Defenders will get Fire blast, Tankers will get Energy Aura, etc etc. I'd imagine there'd be exceptions due to balance (might never see Regen Tanks) but I think they're not going to hold anything back due to individual concept disputes.

It is my opinion that this set is a bad idea. Thematically bad.
Fair enough. I never claimed the idea was the best...

But what about aesthetically? What say you if Brutes had a gauntlet shield option that took the place of the glove piece to free up the hand node so they can pair Shield Defense with Claws and Dual Blades?

    Quote:
I believe the "Mechanically Inappropriate" argument is faulty since the Devs obviously have no problem altering a set (Dark Armor lost it's AoE damage effect and it's stealth power in exchange for Hide and an always on defense boost)
Don't see how this disproves that argument seeing as every damage aura in an armor set is replaced with hide.

    Quote:
But it's purely a matter of opinion.
And how, exactly, is Shield Defense thematically inappropriate? I'm just curious...in your opinion, of course.
  19. Ah, sneaky uncertainty statements...Well next time I can simply just quote something like:

"They didn't have enough stalker sets, yet, and made the incredibly odd decision to toss those two in, regardless of their not making sense."

And invalidate the argument with a simple 'No', right?
  20. Yeah, I know. When you make statements saying "The devs only gave Stalkers Regen and Elec Armor because the AT *needed* sets and would not have otherwise" shouldn't you have to prove yourself right? Prove that they didn't proliferate those and future sets for thematic reasons?
  21. Well, you only asked for the fire melee post but again, why do I have to do all your work?

And if you read a few posts of their's in that thread, BaB's opinion probably mattered more on that round of proliferation. He specifically said they proliferated what would require the least animation work because of all the Power Customization work. If they did Fire Melee, they'd most likely have to put in Fiery Aura too. Broadsword only required the 1 animation so they went with that.
  22. Why do I gotta do all your work for you?

    But fine.

But we are getting Fire for Stalkers. It's just a matter of time.

Shield, however, has no thematic reason not to be ported except that many of the powers work counter to the loner hidden assassin's fighting style (Phalanx Fighting, Grant Cover and Against All Odds). The devs have even said as much that the set isn't mechanically suited for Stalkers.

Moot point then, don't you think?

Besides that, I *did* remark about the custom options available to the set. Just like Shield Defense has several different options that make various concepts possible, since this would be the Stalker version of SD, it'd only be fair to do the same with tech and elemental options:

    >Phantom-Energy glove = a hand-shaped mass of energy coming from your arm. You could RP that you can cover your entire body with such energy to bend light like Energy Aura or perhaps you're just a phantom energy being that can diffuse his body through different levels of photon radiation in and out of the visible spectrum.

    >Darkness Claw = a menacing looking claw comprised of pure darkness. Again, you can simply be a creature that can change himself partially into shadow (and harder to see) or you control said darkness and cover your body in shadow.

    >Tech Arm = A piece of advanced technology that is an extension of your arm (or you simply are full robot with a large hand). Cloaking device, pure and simple.

    >Magic Gauntlet = That happens to contain a spell of invisibility.

    >Mutated Appendage = If you can make your arm bulk out and shrink (turn toggles on and off), maybe you can shrink your body so it's easier to hide or developed a chameleon mutation that helps you blend in with surroundings.

If the name didn't single out a star by name, the ambiguity would make the origins more neutral, IMO. Radiance of the Stars seems to capture the feel of the set too but keeps the origins vague.
