Personally, I don't think there is any Wrong/Right build, only opinions around that issue, and your opinions will always depend on how you like to play.
I have teamed with a superb stone Tanker who could hold aggro for whole rooms and would herd them to a kill point everytime with ease. Yes he was excellent at Tanking but I was bored stupid by the "you wait here" play style.
I also teamed with an Ice/Ice Tanker who tended to ue Punchvoke/Skranker tactics more often. The team still functioned well around his style even if we did come closer to some face plants than on the other team. For myself I loved the more dynamic style and I had much more fun.
Given the above, in response to the OP, I would advise, stop trying to anticipte what will/will not be "popular" in the game. Its not posible to do. "You can please some folks, all of the time or all folks some o the time but you will never please ALL the folks ALL the time".
Forget everyone else and, instead, just build the character you think you will enjoy playing. Hell, if you find later on that you want him to focus differently in his style there are alays respecs available. -
My main is an Ill/Storm 'troller at level 38 and there is one thing you should be aware of.
Its very much a "chaos combo" in that you have very few actual "lock down" controls. Most of the time mobs will be slipping and sliding, boucing off walls or staggering like drunks all over the map It will keep ya safe but it will NOT be neat.
Now, unless you REALLY know what you are doing (and I admit I don't) it can be a swine combination to play in teams. Its great if you are in a regular team and can get to know each others powers/styles but in pugs it can be very hard.
I am not saying it's a bad combo, hell I love it and can solo safer than with my Scrapper who is also in his 30s but it's a point I think you need to be aware of. -
Hmmm, thanks for that guidance there all.
I tend to be mostly a Solo player and so the toon would have a Skranker type build. This being the case, the quick recovery in WP would probably be a great help on the END front. From the sound of things tho, INV gives better overall protection to most osf the stuff one encounters at early levels. Since I am a novice with the Tanker AT, (I have always struggled to get my head around the AT and never gotten one to high level) I am thinking at the moment I will probably leave the toon as it is as an AXE/INV, especially if the WP set is slightly bugged at the moment.
Cheers all. -
Hi folks, a bit of advice needed if possible.
I currently have a Battle Axe/Invulnerability Tanker at around level 12. When I created him Invulnerability was a good choice since it fitted in well with his backstory/bio etc. The problem I now have is that Willpower has come along and that is an even better thematic fit for his bio.
I am currently thinking about deleting the exisitng character and re doing him from the start as a Battle Axe/Willpower Tanker but I am in two minds. While Willpower has the edge from the "concept" point of view, I don't know the pros/cons of each set from the practical standpoint. Willpower I don't know at all and since it's new. Also, I am only level 12 with the current toon and so, have only basic familiarity with the Invulnerability set as well.
So I would appreciate hearing your thoughts on how the two powersets compare in actual game terms so that I can make a more informed decision on the future of this Tanker.
My thanks in advance for any and all comments/advice. -
Noooooo!
Like Moondog, I teamed up with you on those same RP TFS usualy as Demon of Darkness! Fantastic TFs and a chance to meet some wonderful fellow players such as yourself and Mother's Love. I was still very much new to the games at that time and the great time I had on those TFs and the community spirit is one of those things that have kept me with the game.
Like others I think that one last TF would be a great sendoff for you before you go and Demon is standing ready to assist!
Whatever happens tho I wish the following blessings upon you.
May the Luck o' the Irish be ever with ye.
May the Lord and Lady watch over you on every road your journey takes you.
May you be in heaven a half hour before the devil even knows you have gone!
-
Well congrats to whoever won but also........congrats to the organisers for pulling together what is easily the largest costume comp I have seen in this game!
Good work! -
Ok, now that I have a clearer understanding of how this new Defiance is going to work I am sooooooo looking forward to it cominng on line! It's gonna make my Ice/Ice and Fire/Firw Blasters totally brutal!
-
just followed that link over to the post on the US forums and I have to say that this looks like being a gash darned HUGE boost to the Blaster AT.
The other thing that strikes me is that they don't even need to give away a freespec to everyone when it launches as, no matter what your build, its gonna be fantastic! -
Ah, now it beomes clear. thanks for that!
I presume that these boosts will then totally replace the exisiting system and that Blasters will NOT get bonuses to damage as their health lowers.
If that is the case, I have to say I like the new idea. Ok, you may not get the blaster damage that you used to when you had only a tiny sliver of health left, something like a 400% bonus I think? but the bonus you DO get isprety much available all the time and at much less risk.
It strikes me that the main benefit will be to thoe Blaters who play at range so I do wonder what the Blappers will make of these changes.
EDIT: To any Devs reading this I now totally withdraw my dcriticism in my earlier post about the fix to Defiance being "unfocused". This is actually a very complex and detailed approach to the whole issue and as a player, its reasuring to see such care taken over changes to the game. -
Ahh so this change to the activation times is more a general balancing act across the sets that will help PAVE THE WAY for other improvemtns to Defiance later on. Is that it?
EDIT: Will the part ii and part iii above be specific only to the Blaster AT or are they also going to be "across the board" improvements? If it's acros the board, it still strikes me that a hell of a lot of other ATs are going to benefit from what is essentiall a "fix" to a perceived problem in the BLASTEER AT. -
Well done to this SG, it's great to see a cossie comp being organised again. Everyone said that the introduction of Woolworths err I mean WENTWORTHS!
would be the end of them as everyone would hoard their inf. Nice to see that coming to an end.
One little thing to be aware of tho, having checked out your website announcement, it says the prises are in INFAMY. since the comp is being held in Atlas I don't think many Villains are gonna be around to collect the prizes
Once again, top marks to you for community spirit and generosity. I may well bring along a toon or two to try my luck -
I confess to being lost as to how exactly, shortening the activation times of all these powers is supposed to be "DEFIANCE THE NEXT GENERATION".
I realise that whislt the current Defiance is active, Blasters would get off more shots and thus do more damage (Endurance permitting of course!) but.... they still have to be near the redline healthwise and run the same risk of face planting that they have now.
Also, Defiance is supposed to be the BLASTER inherant power but these changes actually improve things for a whole slew of ATS so its not exactly a "focused" solution to the "perceived" problems of Defiance is it?
Don't get me wrong here, I am not complaining about this situation. I like the idea of improved activation times for many of my alts and, whilst it could probably do with a little bit of love from the Devs, I think that Defiance as it stands is nowhere near as gimped as its made out to be. You just need to have the right approach to playing it.
So, I get back to my question, which I think is a valid one, how can shortening activation times across the board be "DEFIANCE THE NEXT GENERATION"? -
Do I take it from this that we are all doing the Tutorial in our own way and then meeting On/under Atlas Statue after that?

I love it when a tanker says "Ok, I think you better take over the tanking"
especially during Posi TF with my DM/DA it was priceless
The other nice situation is when the whole team is running away and you stay behind not because you know you can take them, but because the phone rang just when the shout to run came and you didn't notice the team has bailed while you were distracted.

Oh thats just HARSH!!!!!!
Best fun I had with my DM/DA scrapper was on a pug. We were a full team of 8 on invincible and in a mission full of Freakshow, many of them tank smashers
Got to one part and basically managed to totally muck things up and aggro about 3 or 4 whole spawns. Well, in quick succession pretty much the entire team got wiped excpet for me and the Empath who was back up the map afk on a bio break. He comes back into the game just in time to see screams of RUN!!!! in the team chat and me with a yellow health bar and falling fast. In he leaps and heals me. I keep fighting he keeps healing. over and over and over again.
It was mental fun coz practically every freak just seemed to resurrect and I fought like the entire crowd twice. About halfway through I felt like a god coz the rest of the team had not gone to hosp but stayed and were cheering us on. It was like the end moments of a Rocky Movie where he finally pulls the fight out of the back. Truly superb.
I admit I would never had done it without the Empath but still to just go toe to toe with so many major bad guys was epic! -
Hey Wolfman,
Just going back over the posts in the thread and I paid a bit more attenion to your 1st one. Out of curiosity which Uni have you started at? I am just thinking how cool it would be if it turns out you are studying close to where one of the rest of us lives. -
Ok lets forget this for a game of soldiers! (and yes that pun was intended as well)
Looking back through the posts it seems that most people cCAN make this Friday evening. SOOOOOO. Whilst I can't do it regulalry, I am gonna kick my usual plans into touch for this week and will be available this Friday for the big kick off. As Wolf said, 19:00 on top of the Atlas globe on Friday 26thn October.
Ok people if this is good for ya then lemmee hear ya holler!
Sound off! -
I have also done a planned build on Mids hero Builder. to be honest the Grav/FF sets combine to make a well balanced character. You could not solo with it of course but, the Grav set gives lots of lockdown (with a little damage thrown in) and the FF obviously allows great team protection. Don't really need to dip into pools for anything. By the way Diakos, you did not post your choice of Date/time
-
Ok it looks to me like we need another of our little "polls" here to establish a start date. (For a military unit this really is very democratic isn't it?
)
Can everyone please post their PREFERRED date and time and then underneath that their SECOND CHOICE date and time. Hoopefully we can get something that everyone can make. If I ABSOLUTELY have to I miht be able to cancel my usual Friday stuff just this week in order to be at the launch but I'd rather not so.... poll below and I will start. (PLEASE REMEMBER THIS IS FOR START ONLY AND NOT REGULAR TEAMING SCHDULE)
Lady Leprechaun - Thursday 19:00 OR Sunday 19:00 (to fit with Zephyr)

And apologies to the bossman who turned up in last place on the list! -
Up till now I would have thought our ideal mix would be the Defender, the Controller 3 Blasters, 1 Tanker and then 2 Scappers to add that little bit of close up punch.
BUT....looking at the list we have, I think we may have a real optimum configuration there.
I reckon if they co-ordinate their fire the Blasters will be absolutely brutal. Because of their damage output we will need the 2 Tankers we have to handle the aggro generated. Our single scrapper can be our boss killer and The Defender and Controller can provide the the lockdowns, buffs and heals to keep everyone in the game.
It's looking REAL good People!!!!! -
Ok, Fridays are never good for me due to other commitments so 7pm till 9pm this Friday is a non starter for me.
My normal availability would be:
Any weeknight BAR FRIDAY (provided work has not sent me somewhere stupid).
Apart from Saturday morning when it's shopping time, I am available for the whole weekend pretty much MOST weekends.
One other thing I would like to try and do EITHER weeknights OR weekends. That way I can play the team for part of the week and still have another part of the week to get in some work on creeping Lady Leprechaun toward hitting 50.
I know its more of a wait (and like everyone else I REALLY want to get this going as I reckon it could be really special) can we make it Sunday PM as someone suggested? Failing that if we really want to go early can everyone make this Thursday 7pm till 9pm?
If this is not an option and the majority CAN make this Friday I will understand if you want to go for launch without the full team. I will be sorry to miss the start but, I will understand. -
I recomend that when we DO get this thing off the ground we all meet up first in game with exisiting toons just to co ordinate who is playing what nd sorting out our planned names. THEN we all log off and create the new toons and all meet up at start of the tutorial.
If we do that we can check out cossies and everything and if necessary go back and do the toon again just to get everything SPOT ON right from the get go.
Sound good? -
Am looking at maybe using up one of my Freespecs on my level 18 Fire/Fire Blaster to drop Combustion.
Whilst I like the concept of this power and think it fits well in the sets "thematically", I find it does very anaemic damage currently with two damage DOs in it. I already have FSC for a decent PBAOE and am wondering is I really NEED Combustion as well?
If I do drop it it will also allow me to free up slots and get three damage slots in all bar one of my attacks at my currentl level (18)
So my question is should I be patient in slotting up my attacks and keep Combustion in because it will mature later in the build?
OR
Do I get rid of it and max out the damage early on my current attacks?
Any thoughts from veteran fire blasters? -
He He He, I see wolfman is getting in character all ready there!
Ok, assuming everyone gets their 1st choice from that list then we have.....
Diakos, with his Empath defender would be the Unit medic. My Controller, with his Force Fields would be the Sapper We would have a ROCK SOLID core of fire power from three AR Blasters. (With decent team work and co-ordinated fireing, those three will be nasty!).
We would then need a Tanker to be our heavy artillery and a Scrapper for our close assault.
In an ideal world I would make the last three spaces a Tanker and two Scrappers but thats just my own thoughts.
All in all I'd say that this is looking more and more promising people! -
Hi Folks, just a bit of advice.
Am doing some levelling on my Fire/Fire Blaster who is approaching level 18. Am torn between taking Health and then Stamina, leaving Aim and Build up for levels 22 and 24 or doing it the other way around.
End is an issue on my guy so Stamina is obviously needed BUT I am thinking Aim and Build up will make his CURRENT end use more cost effective.
Any thoughts on how I ought to go? -
The main cossie ideas look pretty ok to me. Not exactly what I had in mind originally for a "military" theme but it works.
I really like the middle two helmet options though, they fit in with the rest of the look REALLY well. I don't envision my character having the helmet but I still like your style!
