  1. Haha... I hadn't quite sold myself on the ears but, hey, whatcha gonna do?
  2. Looks very nice! But nothing that couldn't be made better by drawing on a superhero mask
  3. Commercial aspects aside, I think a collection of links to the galleries of the local artists would be a great thing. Especially since its rarely obvious who here has what DA page.
  4. I was matched up with Clobbertime:

    Clobbertime's story is...

So the original Clobbertime was gifted with some ancient magical power which has made him into a super fighter but he retains a violent edge. I decided to play these angles up in my revamp. I wanted to refrain from making something obvious for "Clobbertime" such as a hulking brute but instead made his power's origins a bit more obvious:

My thought here was to make him a bit more unworldly without going overboard. He has the more subdued glowing eyes, the vampire ears (which are less obvious than the elf/imp ears) and I tried to dress him in somewhat similar colors but in a new way. His chest contains the Baroque pattern which I thought hinted at mystical origins without being an obvious "rune" or "glyph" pattern. His various belts remind me of the Eidolon. The chains on his hands help give his punches more... punch without making him all bulked up. I tried to give his outfit a somewhat menacing quality to depict his violent nature without making him look like a villain since he's not evil... just slightly unhinged. I kept the blue and black but shifted the goldish color more towards green to reflect perhaps a tie to some fae or earthy type spirits who may have given his ancestors their gift.

    Hope you like the idea!

    Buy This

Speaking of... what's up with the orange text?

(No, I didn't neg rep you. Just find it visually jarring)
  6. I'm predicting a rash of people logging into old servers and abandoned characters now. I have some lvl 4s from pre-I1 that could be a gold mine!
  7. To bottom line it for me (not that I think you care but I enjoy typing):

-- All things being equal, I'd rather buy from a local artist. I appreciate the few freebies I've gotten very much, enjoyed the conversation, seeing other people's characters rendered in various styles, etc. I wish I could participate more in the creative end of the forum but that's not the talent God gave me. Regardless, this forum is my first stop on the boards and the locals are a major factor in that.

-- I may not buy from a local artists because of various reasons that made things not equal: Long queues/lack of commission slots, current pricing, personal disinterest in their style, I already have art from them and want to diversify, etc.

-- I think some artists here I've never seen their DA pages and think the Local Artist list will be a great thing. Some of the factors above may be fulfilled by locals who I just didn't know could provide what I wanted.

-- Although I'd rather buy from the locals, I can't feel guilty about going abroad if circumstances take me there because my art budget is limited and getting something that'll bring me the most pleasure has to be a priority. Buying art is a luxury and I want to feel good about the final results.

    And that's about that.
  8. Thinking about it, there's probably at least a few artists around here who I'm not even sure if I've seen their DA page or not. Unless their DA account name and their posting name here are the same, I can never really tell who is who. The Network doesn't really address this either (I don't think and I'm not implying that it should).

Edit: And, just like that, Gray Huntress starts a thread. Man, if I knew I had that kind of pull around here, I'd have mentioned my need for a sandwich.
  9. The winners of Contest #3 will cry, anyway

    In-game Spam?

To answer the core question, no, since I set my new e-mails settings I haven't seen any innovative new non-mail spamming techniques. I do often see "You have 15 new e-mails" (with none actually coming through) when I log in so I guess the spammers are still relying on that.

No, Victory. The night before, we did a Manticore, slogged through the purple bugged Paragon Protectors and were about half done when we hit the AE bug. After waiting 45min on a petition, people gave up for the night.

Last night, we got AE bugged again but it was the very first mission so it was easy to start over.

It's kind of funny -- I made 14 levels which was great but, honestly, making seven levels would have been a banner weekend for me. I guess part of the 2xp thing is that people are driven to team and play so, even without the bonus, you put in more "productive" time than usual.

  13. Picked up a couple extra levels as I had hoped last night so the TA/A Def is now 38 with my arrow nuke That's from 24-38 total then for the event.

Ran a Manticore which had a false start (first mission: Zone into the AE sidewalk) but then went great. Then the Mender TF which was set for +2 and resulted in a lvl 44 AV Nosferatu against our poor 38's. We couldn't dent him but he sure dented us. Repeatedly. So we gave up for the night.
  14. My TA/A defender from 24 to 36 (and maybe beyond) which was very nice. The character's really coming into its own now after some rough patches in the 20's so I'm glad I got this boost to get over that.
  15. FenianGirl should be at Pocket D, getting hit upon by the Lounge Crooner

Daybreaker Alpha should be doing the 3/4 sorta-back to back thing with Polish Princess, both firing off blasts at their unseen surrounding foes.

More pictures of either available easily enough.

    Feral Kat artz!

Very, very nice on the latest piece! They're all good but you know what I mean.

One problem I encountered, however, was the availability of local product. One or two were full up and not taking more at the moment, at least one doesn’t do commissions (yeah, I’m glaring at you, CR!) and several others either didn’t appeal to me, didn’t list even ballpark prices, weren’t clear about whether they were open or not or were just flat out more than I was willing to pay.
Agreed on this. One thing about seeing someone advertising a sale is that you know they at least have openings in their queue. I've seen DA pages from artists I would like to commission but their journals are so poorly updated or are just such a mess that it's impossible to tell when if they're accepting. As you said, I could start sending notes and stuff asking but, more likely, I just move on. Exceptionally long queues turn me off but I suppose the artist shouldn't feel too bad about that since, if they have thirty or fifty pieces in their backlog, they don't need me.

I'm also subscribed to some artists because I'm waiting (hoping) for a sale some day because their stuff is just out of my mental budget. Not that it's not "worth" what they're asking, it's just more cash than I can justify spending on CoH art.

So, to me at least, being a contributor to these boards, or even just an occasional visitor, is a factor on where I will take my business. But it is not a deciding factor. Availability, quality and price are all
going to have their say as well.

I would encourage everyone to support our local artist folk when possible…
Agreed. All things being equal, I'd rather support a local artist but all things are rarely equal. I'll also note that, for me, most of my contact with the local talent is through them posting "I'm having a sale" or someone showing off their commissioned work and linking to them. I have signatures turned off because I find the level of signature graphics distracting and too attention grabbing when I browse from work. Unfortunately, this means I miss anyone who even has a simple text link to their DA page in their sig.

Really, I agree with most of your thoughts. Artists who specialize in females or robots or whatever don't bother me much -- I just mentally file them away for when I want something done of that type of character. I think it goes without saying that most people would look at an artist's gallery and think "Do I like this stuff?" before ordering it and any local artist who does shoddy work because they're in a hurry from a sale is doing themselves a disservice given that artwork will wind up posted here or on one another's DA pages, etc. An artist from out in the woods might get away it, but a more local one is telling the community (part of their supposed customer base) "This is what you can expect from me".

I am susceptible to taking a chance on an exceptionally low priced offering just to see what the artist is able to do with my character. A good sale price might entice me to do that. I haven't been upset about the results yet.
  18. I'm too wrapped up in double xp!

Ok, ok... I'll be sure to enter tonight before the deadline.
  19. Very nice indeed. A difficult pose to pull off and done very well!
  20. If villains are going to be the distinguishing feature, you'd be better served by not having most of the content be "Invade this other villain group's hideout and beat up their leader and 'steal' the same treasure you'd be 'saving' as a hero".

Oh, and wandering citizens shouldn't smart-mouth me ("My, you're looking villainous tonight") as they walk by. Or at least let me hit 'em with my axe when they get sassy

I've only played up to 20 in CoV so far so maybe there's awesome villainous content ahead. If so, it shouldn't take 20 levels to start reaching it.
  21. Pretty much. The reticule is always on the right hand side but flipping the entire image made the right hand side the "far" side, thus hiding the metal bits and making it look like a monocle. Which was fine by me since I love the picture regardless. I was just noting that the artist was originally willing to tackle the tech aspect of it but not to redraw the entire head

That chick is my TA/A defender, Tally-Ho

The "monocle" is actually a reticule but the artist flipped the image part way in because he had her left handed instead of right handed and the hardware from the reticule was covered by her facing the other direction. Originally he had it in the piece:

Did you learn NOTHING from the "Are you a male or female?" thread?? Nothing at all???
