I am personally a fan of the Silver Age, and have had no problem creating characters with a Silver Age look and feel.
I think it's easy for the creator to look that way because making non-spandex costumes requires "things". Jackets, armors, different pants, boots, spikes, and whatever other doo-dads. Spandex mainly requires the "tights" option and a bunch of patterns.

That's simplified but I hope you see what I mean.
  2. One thing I miss from other MMORPGs is the ability to put lasting buffs on other players. It used to be nice to hang around newbie areas and throw hitpoint buffs, defense buffs, etc on the guys fighting whatever the local version of rats 'n bats turned out to be. CoH buffs are all so short term and half the time you get cranked at because trying to surprise someone with a buff was apparently the most inconsiderate thing you possibly could have done.

One thing I've been trying to do is be the guy who answers when someone asks "Can anyone help me with...?" Frostfire, Trapdoor, Seige, mission full of Malta, whatever. For all I know, they got 250 private tells offering to help but a lot of times it feels like their question is hanging there in broadcast/channel unanswered. Even if they didn't need my help, I at least know that they got help in one way or another and it rarely costs me much, even in time.

Pretty much, yeah. I'm not sure why I'm supposed to suddenly feel bad about people who haven't paid into the game for years risking losing their name because the e-mail comes at an inconvenient time.

You can come up with hypothetical edge cases for any scenario. I doubt the bulk of CoH's former players who quit 2+ years ago are currently in Afghanistan and that's why they're not logging in now.

On Virtue, Pocket D is the unofficial role playing hang out. While it's open, a lot of the action moves to the ski chalet in Pocket D, otherwise the blueside upper bar (where the NPC War Witch is) is the most crowded. Mind you, this mainly "stand around and talk" role playing which might not appeal to you if you're looking for action-packed rp missions but you'll have plenty of bios to read. For role playing missions I'll say again that you'll probably want a supergroup dedicated to that sort of thing since most pickup groups don't bother with it.

Speaking of costumes, if you're looking for help on designing your own, drop by the Costume (Re)Design Help Thread in the Art & Screenshots forum on this board. People there who'll help you design a great costume whether you want Silver Age, Gold Age, 90's Grit, historical or whatever else.

Fair enough. I'm just balancing the idea of "monsters" against worries I've heard expressed that the introduction of such things would turn CoH into another swords & spells fantasy MMORPG.

Then again, it's not as though the devs are going to read my post and jump right on it anyway
  10. There's also a role playing section on these boards. This is more of a general interest forum and although people discuss bios and "Will your character want to go rogue?" type questions here, you're also going to get a lot of non-rp related stuff.

If you haven't, you can try playing on Virtue which is the unofficial "role playing" server. It's also one of the heaviest populated servers in the game (not everyone is there to role play of course). Even there, you'd be best served to get into a RP-oriented supergroup rather than expecting everyone in a pickup group to role play their way through radio missions. Check out the Virtue server forum on these boards for more information.

I can accept that you find newspaper/radios easier. I personally don't think there's enough difference (and they don't change my own gameplay enough) to give up the obvious benefits of tips.

I get ya and agree to a good extent. It's just that the V/R thing was billed as a chance to play both sides but really the only thing you can do on the other side is say "Oh no! Freakshow stole the P.L.O.T. Device!" or wait for someone else to start something and ask if you can tag along. Not exactly how I pictured myself as a vigilante or rogue. Running missions directly for Mr. Bocor doesn't seem that different from an "immersion" standpoint than saying "Hey, you're going to steal something for that evil voodoo guy? Can I come along and help? I'd ask him myself but, you know, vigilante and all..."

Other superhero game or other MMORPG in general? (I honestly don't know since I never played the other ones that deeply).

Heck, Everquest had a Lost World thing going with dinosaur attacks and battles against big ole dragon skeletons way back in 1999 & 2000. Apparently that didn't stop anyone else from doing it. A good idea is a good idea.

I'm not either. I'm doing them because they're more interesting than newspaper/radios and because I can get A-Merits. Despite your portrayal of them, a lot of people manage to speed run five tips in a very short time by just racing to the end, knocking out the objective and going to the next one. If you want the xp, you can take your time. If you only want the merits, you can speed them. I've never had a problem with overly complicated objectives. The few that do have "complicated" objectives, you can just skip.

I'm interested in either leveling a non-50, which I typically do solo, or tagging along with what the people I'm playing with are doing. By and large, that means tagging along for TF/SF/Trial content. The majority of that content is either blue-side-only or coop. Making my Villains into Rogues is the minimum effort I need to make to allow them to participate in all of that.
I can buy that. Going Villain to Rogue makes more sense to me than Hero to Vigilante from a "how much stuff will this really open for me?" point of view.

Personally, I'd rather see rogues & vigilantes able to access (on their own) content on both sides of the wall instead of waiting for someone else to start an arc or task force. I'd happily give up the reward merits for completing R/V tips for that. Not sure how anyone else would feel about it.

I don't even work at grinding alignment merits but I also don't do any radio/newspaper missions any longer. Why would I? If I need a one-off mission to fill some time, I'll run a tip mission and get closer to an A-Merit. They're even moderately more interesting than "Rancid Hackmeister is Calling You out!"

I know some people run newspaper/radios for the badges or jetpack, etc but I'm not too worried about those things personally.

Your experience may differ but I've never been unable to find something to do blueside while the redside SF/mission scene was hopping and I was left out. I suppose the reverse may hold more true.

Got it in one for me. Aside from a few edge cases such as lots of friends on both sides or badge hunting, you're handicapping yourself to run as a vig/rogue and getting very very little in return. Being able to do newspaper missions in the Isles (but no real missions unless I'm tagging along with someone else) isn't worth losing the chance to gain the very valuable hero merits.
  17. My concept of a "lost world" would be a jungle island with vine covered ruins populated by 5th Column or some other similar group. Exploring the ruins would reveal tunnels leading to a modern complex underneath with your usual mission doors, etc.

Too keep it from being too much like a fantasy MMORPG, I'd restrict the dinosaur aspect to a zone GM that "threatens" the small hero base (aid station, vendor, difficulty changer NPC, etc) and a few dinosaurs in the task force much like the minotaur/cyclops mobs in Cimerora. Most zone mobs would be 5th Col. types or native villager types (think like the D. Pantheon shamans). Also, like Cimerora, I'd save truely entering the heart of the ruins for the task force and mission arc climaxes. The mission arc focuses around freeing the natives' leader/princess/something so they're not forced to help the 5th Col. I'd give the task force a pulpy "Indiana Jones" or "The Phantom" feel with the 5th Column trying to excavate a lost artifact of great power.

The task force climaxes with the 5th column animating a massive Tyrannosaur skeleton and the heroes battling it. Good times.

Ditto all this. I always hated the "bug" where my far-right-edge vertical tray randomly would stop working when I started a play session. I'll have to try this.

Yeah but you can use the martial arts pieces in a ton of ways that don't say "Martial arts". You can use the magic pieces in ways that don't say "I'm a wizard!" The wedding bits are good for more than playing bride & groom. Even the mutant pieces I've seen used to represent coral, stone, bone, tree roots, vines, fire, ice... stuff that's not just "I have some weird mutant pointy bits".

I don't see that versatility coming from an animal parts booster (maybe I'll be wrong). I'm legitimately happy for those who'll get the parts they've wanted for 5+ years and, hey, after this the team will move on to the next theme. I'm just musing more than anything else.

Hehehe... I'm hoping that this has more versatile pieces than just straight-up animal parts. As I said in another thread, there's not much you can do with a zebra head except be Mr. Zebra Head Guy but I've seen the parts in other packs used in tons of creative ways. But I know a lot of people are just dying to be Mr. Zebra Head Guy so I can't complain too much about it.
  21. I don't even need separately jointed fingers with air between them. I'd be happy with a basic hand model that was formed so it looked like you had four separate fingers held together and a thumb. Not the "meat slab with lines drawn on it" we have now. It would take more polygons than what we have but less than five separately jointed fingers.

I'm not saying any option would be "Easy", just what would look less laughable. Hands (and bare feet... oy) have always been my least favorite part of the model/costume process.
  22. On top of the "old expired account" thing, I think any unsubscribed trials over 60 days old should be auto-purged. As weak as I think the "But what if he returns after three years?" argument is, any argument for keeping names locked into old trial accounts that never saw the blessed light of a credit card number is even weaker.

Edit: That said, the eagle head looks nice. Not that I'm really into an animal pack but hopefully it'll have some pieces that inspire wider use. For that matter, to touch on the faces thing, the faces that came with the mutant pack are fantastic and it's only too bad that the older faces don't compare. If the old faces were done with that much detail, I could almost overlook the meat-mittens

Non-mitten hands that don't actually have individual bones for each finger they could slip in by accepting a potential hit to the minimum spec to the game. That's basically just a poly count increase per character model being rendered. More realistic faces, with things like bones or deformers for facial animation? That's tech that just doesn't exist here, and I have a hard time imagining adding it would be remotely trivial.
Part of me agrees with you.

The other part is embarrassed to recommend the game to people knowing they'll be looking at mitten hands, painted faces and those awful, awful NPCs who look as though they were carved from wood and painted by children before being released onto the streets of Paragon City. Especially because everyone always plays up the character creator and, while the costume selection is great, the models you put them on really do fall short these days.
