Quote:I got an ad for Thor. I think the internet ate its tail just then. So, I click on the link and I get a YouTube ad, which it tells me I can skip in 5 seconds. I'm initially confused, because I'm looking at the green band in front of a trailer. Turns out the ad in front of a trailer for Thor, is a trailer for The Source Code.
I'm now looking forward to two movies. -

The most recent discovery I'm very very pleased about.
If you have a mouse with the side buttons you can bind attacks or inspirations to them.
The Back click is Button4
The forward click is Button5
Currently going thru all my alts and giving them these binds;
/bind button4, inspexec_name Respite
/bind button5, powexec_name Fly
Allows me to free up an additional space on my tray by removing the travel power icon as well! -

You go, Steelclaw. If you are having fun, you are doing it right. Who cares what anyone else thinks?
(Unless you are a farmer or exploiter, since you tools ruin *my* gameplay because the Devs have Steelclaw's anal-retentiveness when it comes to trying to quash those loopholes with a sledgehammer instead of just excising them with a scalpel.)
I used to have spreadsheets for all my characters as well as the over-arching bird's eye view of them as a whole. Having my laptop implode and the backup hard drive fail to work cured me of it, because life is too short to re-do all that work. -

Quote:Yeah, the fur options are really quite weak, unfortunately. More animalistic body, arm and leg fur would've been awesome, as would simple animal feet on regular legs.I like this Animal Pack. However I really need an animal fur version of the feline face. I can't get that rich color on the face, and I can't get the face to match the rest. Is there any way we can possible try and get this added to the pack?
Sigh
From what I've seen in the art forum threads so far, I think the hands-down winner of this pack is the Bull head. I really do wish they'd put the smooth wolf tail in the pack as the ragged one is not appealing.
I also wish there were non-snarling versions of the wolf and cat heads. I've already mentioned the fact that I'd like the faces to be modified substantially by the sliders in order to give us more options. Oh well.
In baseball terms, I think this pack is a solid double. Most of us were looking for a home run, but it's not too bad as-is, I suppose. It's just not zinging my heartstrings. -
Quote:In the Animal Pack thread in the Screenshots forum someone has a picture of their ape character in mid-beast leap. Not sure if anyone has specified (I've been kind of away from the forums a bit and haven't read around like usual) but anyone care to describe what the jumping portion of Beast Run looks like? The trailer doesn't actually show anyone jumping during the Beast Run. And I'm guessing, with the lack of discussion, that weapons disappear while you run and reappear when you stop? What about the idle stance with a sword/dual pistols out?

Quote:Sometime in 2005 I teamed with a Tank who had not taken any of his toggle powers, so it was not uncommon to see him getting knocked behind us, as well as getting Confused, Feared, etc. Watching a Tank charge into battle only to get knocked back thirty feet was quite a hoot, which made up for being such a drag on the team.Once back in the day, I saw a build where a scrapper had taken Jump Kick, Flurry, Punch, and Kick. Not sure about if they were all slotted, but I definately saw them being used. Though I was, in fact, guilty of having flurry myself back when I started, but to take that many power pool attacks, you'd have to be skipping over primary powers.

Welcome to the game, Michael.
I'd start in City of Heroes first, as that's the basis for the two expansions. As ZephyrWind says, make your first character a throw-away -- don't even make a costume or give him a name. Then make your second one a Hero and start in the tutorial.
READ everything in the tutorial. It will give you a solid basis for the entire rest of the game.
Important tips:
Servers are listed according to population. The ones with the most players are on the bottom. However, the last server you were on is always at the top, no matter how many people are on it. The three most-populated servers are Freedom, Virtue and Infinity, in that order. Virtue is the unofficial roleplaying server.
Good names are harder to get on more populated servers, but there are plenty to be had. Names like "Xx Superdude xX" are viewed with derision and often ridiculed in-game. If you really want a name like "Buzzsaw" but it's taken, try a variation like "Captain Buzzsaw" or "Commander Buzzsaw" or whatever.
Do NOT try to recreate a character from another game, movie, TV show, etc. That will get your character genericked, meaning your name will be deleted and replaced with something like "Generic Hero 000 302 6789" and your costume will be reset to the default plain one. You can make one that is inspired by another work, but it's better to come up with your own concept and go from there.
If you want help designing a costume, check out the "Costume Re-Design" thread in the "Screenshots and Fan Art" subforum.
The Hero archetypes (known informally as ATs):
Blasters are the hardest hitters, but they die easily. They are known as "glass cannons". Fire Blasters have the most powerful attacks, while Dual Pistols are the weakest.
Defenders are the weakest when it comes to attacks and soloing but are often unstoppable in a group.
Tankers are the hardest to kill, generally speaking, but they have fairly low damage output. Fire Tanks and Dark Tanks *do* have some decent damage output, however.
Scrappers -- especially Scrappers who have Willpower as their secondary -- are the easiest to play for a new player such as yourself. They have defenses almost as good as Tanks and attacks nearly as powerful as Blasters.
Controllers eventually become quite powerful, but it takes a very long time for that to happen. In the early stages of the game, they are pretty weak and can be frustrating to play.
ParagonWiki will answer other questions you might have. -
I find the sexism in this thread appalling.
I'm also annoyed no one has yet said, "It's hammer time!" -
I'm not a sufferer, I am your King. Bow down before me! (And follow the link in my sig to meet your people.)

Quote:I like it. It's very Saturday Morning Cartoon. Did you have those there? This was based on someone's suggestion. I really liked the "light sabre" looking sword
The armour itself is a bit bright, I'll admit, but this is a more positive character in general, so I wanted a brighter colour scheme without having to use a black or white key.

Hey all, back from the Apple what is Big. Awesome trip, terrific dog show (at which I took over 900 photos, so those will be sorted a bit later) and saw Spider-man: Turn Off the Dark yesterday afternoon. While the photos are uploading, I'll give a quick review of the musical.
I didn't know this before I left (or bought the tickets), but the music is by Bono and The Edge, which is to say it's music by U2. Like much of U2's music, the score is forgettable. There isn't a single song that you leave the theatre humming to yourself -- it's more Rock Opera than Broadway Musical, all electric guitars, bass and drums. It's not bad, it's just not great. I did, however, like one song early on when Pete and MJ are feeling sorry for themselves. Peter's been bullied at school and Uncle Ben has told him to "rise above it" and Mary Jane comes home to her abusive, alcoholic father and they sing a duet-that's-not-a-duet where his refrain is "Anyone but me" and hers is "Anywhere but here" and they go back and forth in their separate houses taking turns singing until they eventually start singing at the same time. That was the most "Broadway" moment of the score.
The staging though... man, what a spectacle! Most people have probably heard about the injuries on the show (the stuntman who suffered the worst one has returned, but I surprised he wasn't killed after that fall) and I have to say that given the astonishing complexity and intricacy of what they're doing, I'm amazed more people haven't been hurt. They are flying all over the theatre -- and I mean ALL OVER: one platform they use is way up on the second balcony near where I was sitting -- and they have multiple people zinging around at the same time. It's really something.
It's directed by Julie Taymor, who did The Lion King, and she's really gone overboard to outdo herself. She's succeeded. This show is a new take on the origin story, using the myth of Arachne as a basis for Peters powers. (Im not crazy about the fantasy aspect of what is otherwise a straightforward Science origin, but I can let it slide without getting too geekily bent out of shape.) The opening is very cool, as six of Arachnes handmaidens/chorus descend from the ceiling on wide golden silk streamers each, three of the girls swinging forward as three are swinging backward. As they lower towards the floor, horizontal streamers rise upward, effectively doing a gigantic basket weave in real time. It was a very cool and clever effect.
The really amazing thing about the staging is how the set seems to shift perspective on a moments notice. One second youre inside an office or an apartment and presto-change-o youre on top a building with little cars driving by on the street below then suddenly everything is upside down. Yet it all makes sense. Honestly, without the incredible staging I would probably agree with the critics that its not a great show. The music is meh and the story feels rushed, basically hitting the high notes of Peters story. However, once I got my mind around the concept they were going for, I did like the meta-commentary aspect of the story. There are 4 kids who are talking about the show as if its a comic book, which at first feels a little odd, but later they start interacting with the show as if their passion for the character and his story have so overwhelmed them that they are transported by it. And I have to admit, that is the exact feeling I had myself when I first read these books as a kid, so the way Taymor staged that feeling of immersion and getting lost in the world and caring about these characters was ingenious.
There is one bizarre feels like a filler number that has Arachne and her eight-legged freaky handmaidens go shoe shopping because Arachne is jealous that Pete loves MJ, but its still kind of weirdly interesting in a surrealist sort of way.
There are also funny moments, too. The wrestling scene from Spideys origin is Peter against a giant inflatable Bonesaw McGraw thats played for laughs and it looks like the actor is having fun bouncing off the guy. One of the best lines goes to J. Jonah Jameson as hes writing a headline describing the Green Goblin tying MJ to a piano and throwing her off the Chrysler building while Spidey tries to stop it: Okay, Ive got it! Spider-man And Goblin Working In Concert, Piano Their Forte! Man, Im really good! -
I especially like the boots and gloves on that.
-
And an equally vocal part of the playerbase has asked for the opposite. I contend serving both is smart business sense. You seem to be saying that telling one group to stick it is good business sense.

Quote:Did IQs just drop sharply while I was away?I played CoH for about 2 hours today - the first hour was helping to test the BAF Trail, and the 2nd hour was running two Kahn TFs, one in 37 minutes on Liberty, and one in 32 minutes on Triumph - both of them were PUGs - does that count as a day-long "exploitation" frenzy?
They said they can earn 10 million an hour. To earn 100 million therefore takes 10 hours. To earn everything needed for a NotW would take them basically a weekend when you factor in the super-valuable drops they also say they get. 200 million per recipe? God, I wish that would happen to me just once, let alone with the regularity they're implying.
So are you saying you earned 100 million and all those shards in those 2 hours? If so, the system is seriously broken and should be made 1,000 times harder for teams. That makes the content utterly trivial. -
Quote:I didn't say they were. They claim to be playing normally and capable of doing what TonyV termed "exploiting."How are UberGuy and Atomic Woman exploiting? That is a pretty serious accusation, at least in terms of the game.
If their experience is considered common as they keep implying, then how could any exploiter or farmer possibly out-perform that? So if a really capable player is managing to hit the level of earnings that TonyV is theorizing the Devs put in place to stop exploiters, then that's a failure to stop exploiters. Instead, it seems more like a slap in the face for those of use who earn a tenth of that and play far less per month. if the best players and exploiters are going to blow through the content in a weekend anyway, there's no reason to make it so difficult that average and below-average players (which I apparently am) can never achieve it. Just ignore them. -
Quote:Well, it *was* a personal attack, mild though it may have been. Basically it's one player calling another a "red-headed stepchild." And the overall tone of this thread has been one of "Team Or Die, Losers", basically being dismissive of anyone who has a different opinion or perspective. Which sensitizes people.Maybe he is right. Maybe the problem isn't with the system.
Since when did we all become so sensitive that any criticism is considered a personal attack and rude?
If people don't want to be criticized for their opinions and actions, they should not post them on a public forum. -
Quote:Every single time they've tried to defeat exploiters they've failed miserably. The recent AE fiasco is an excellent case in point. You will *never* beat the ingenuity and perversity of farmers, so why try?I think--emphasis on think--that what may be going through their head is that they don't want the farmers to trivialize earning this stuff as they have so many other things. In other words, they don't want to unintentionally make it stupid easy to get this stuff, so they are shooting for making the fastest of farmers to take longer to earn the Notice of the Well than an average WST team.
I really do believe that they are acting in good faith to try to prevent people from sitting around a day after Issue 20 hits moaning, "Okay, I'm done. Now what?" Bearing in mind that Shards will start dropping for more types of enemies, I imagine that they set the numbers as they did knowing that if they were lower, farmers would just zip through a few Shard-dropping enemies missions in 30 to 60 minutes, fork over the chump change that is the influence barrier, and within a day have all of their übers kitted out with everything.
This will at least slow them down some.
And so what if people get stuff within a day? It sounds like these players like UberGuy and Atomic Woman who claim to be on the up-and-up are able to get this stuff in a weekend anyway, earning 10 million Inf an hour and another 200 million by selling their amazotacular Purple drops at the market at the end of a fine day of Mt. Dew and Slim Jim-fueled gaming. Why penalize people who are playing the game as it's intended to be played by going after the 2% who are exploiting whatever. -
This is precisely the kind of attitude that I'm talking about. It's divisive and unhelpful. There's no need for it.
-
Quote:Raids are justifiably hated in MMOs these days. That end-game design is old-think. This has always been a solo-friendly game, which is why I keep coming back to it. I play solo probably 90% of the time, just because it's easier for me. (Reasons detailed elsepost.) I'm not concerned with being fastest or firstest, but I would like to eventually get there. "Eventually" should not be so ridiculously, retardedly daunting that it might as well be impossible. For me, 400 million Inf and whatever the stupid number of shards this thing requires make it utterly impossible. All I'm asking -- and all I'm seeing everyone else in the pro-solo go-with-CoH's-historical-strengths asking -- is that things like this be more reasonable. This is really what it boils down to. Apparently some people think getting their Incarnate stuff completely solo shouldn't be much slower than doing it via the WTF. Considering that the entire Incarnate system is described as an end-game, team-based system, I think the devs are being generous giving the 'soloists' a second option at all, but it seems proponents on the other side don't feel that's enough.
Catering to only one group -- a group that has demonstrated a remarkable lack of empathy towards anyone else so far in this thread -- is not smart business sense, because players eventually drift away when their fun quotient goes down. Adding a cool new feature and then telling a portion of your playerbase "Sorry, you can't have it, suckers" is kind of stupid.
