The beam enveloped the nuke and the vigilante with the pulsating glow. With a crack and a flash the two were gone.
25 miles up
A simultaneous crack and flash occured as the two materialised. Having no time to register the transition, Infinitron was hit with the full blast of the 4 megaton blast. The heat evaporated his armour and disintegrated his flesh, only the heat resistant fabric of the cape remained as it fluttered down towards the surface of the earth.
Meanwhile, at ground level
Throughout the city, the blindingly bright flash burst forth, followed by the fireball in the sky. 118 seconds later the sound of the explosion rocked the windows of the city.
In Steel Canyon, a red cape flicked and fluttered down and landed on the roof of the Infinity Building, wrapping itself around one of the antennae masts like a flag.
The sky dimmed, and the city went silent. -
(( "Do or do not, there is no try" ))
"You are blind to the greater good I do here Edward. I cannot expect anyone to fully comprehend what I do here and now. This city is blind to the threat, blinded by faith, blinded by greed, blinded by complacency and blinded by ignorance."
Looking down at his wrist panel, the blinking light reflecting off the shiny leather of his eye patch, Infinitron pushed in the button, and the light went solid red.
With a slowly increasing whine from the thermonuclear device, Joseph Infinus looked back up; raising his arms out to the side, palms up; and saying with finality,
"And in the Land of the Blind, the One eyed man is King." -
Ducking, and rolling to the side, out of the way of the beam; Infinitron re-raised his rifle. However, the sudden pulse had scrambled the viewing apparatus of the helmet. Reaching a hand up he disengaged the helmet to reveal his monucular vision, and with the other hand fired off a volley in the vague direction of Mechano.
-
"Clearly I should have used bigger bullets" said Infinitron without looking up.
"Nice to see you again Edward, our last meeting was so short. Satisfying. But short. You call me a criminal, but you assume that on your idea of right and wrong. If you knew what I knew, you might think otherwise; hence why I will inform you. It won't do you any good anyway.
I have spent alot of time at the palace of the menders; trying to see the outcome of my actions. My noble quest to instill fear into the criminals of this city, true fear, was not good enough. I thought the pit we currently resided in was bad, but the future I saw was far worse.
There are powers at work that not even I can protect this city from, not that I haven't tried. This is my last ditch effort, as it were.
These powers will slowly, but surely, without fuss, without incident, calmly take control of every citizen in this city. Not through mind control, not through force, through careful and precise corruption. Those who resist will disappear, those who don't will become part of the universes most terrifying force. An army of metahumans, unstoppable, and they will be used to enslave and suppress the entire population of this planet; and then, soon enough, many others.
This has been foreseen. As it is, I can not allow this. I am making my stand. This city and its inhabitants must be destroyed. I will go down in histrory as one of the biggest mass murderers of our time; but it is the cost I am willing to pay to see this planet and others in our galaxy remain free.
Unfortunately Edward, I cannot allow you to stop me, too much is at stake, so put your toy down; and embrace the rapture I am about to deploy" Infinitron concluded raising his rifle; the panel on his arm blinking away. -
'4 ons' said the device either side of the control panel hatch.
Checking the device over, inputting codes into the control panel on the side, and syncing the display to his wrist panel; Infinitron worked quickly and efficiently. Someone could appear at any moment; a passerby, a hero on patrol, or god forbid someone could have registered the transport. This was unlikely as they should all be preoccupied with the accidents and jams around the city; all made possible from the unnoticed plan put into effect as the heroes were distracted by those poor children. A necessary distraction.
But their suffering would be over soon enough, no longer would they live in fear. No longer would the world have to live with the ever present threat that he had foreseen.
Closing the panel, the writing now complete, the lettering spelled out.
"4 Megatons" -
((Probably not gonna be many involved in this, most likely just me and one other; but if you feel you have a strong reason to be involved, or a brilliant/hilarious/darn cool idea, please send me a PM. Anyway, onwards...))
Bryan Tyrne sat in his car; humming, and occasionally interjecting with singing, to Asia;
"mmmhmmm, heat of the moment... doo de doode dooo" he blasted out, tapping away on his steering wheel. Glancing at the green light, he shifted the stick forward and pulled out across the intersection.
His hatchback crumpled, the thin sheet metal not standing up to the impact of the minivan that ploughed into the side of the vehicle.
Around the city all the lights turned green; cars crashing at every intersection. Then shortly after, all the lights turned red and stayed like that.
As they did, the cars all around the city began to back up, causing mass gridlock. People began to get out of their cars to see what the holdup was.
Meanwhile, In Perez Park
A shimmer thudded down onto the soft soil, leaving two large imprints and scorch marks. Looking up, Infinitron shimmered into view. Glancing round at the, now, corpses of the Circle of Thorns mages, he raised his wrist and a panel slid open. Tapping in a sequence of commands, he took a few steps back, and a bright light appeared where he was standing; the light grew and then flashed as the teleport activated.
Looking at the device from within his helmet, Infinitron smiled.
"It is time" he muttered to himself. -
((for obvious reasons, Infini can't attend, and for unobvious reasons, neither can Rufus))
-
The next day, Guards at the Zig moved the 18 bodies; all those of convicted mass murderers.
Meanwhile
The communicators clicked on for what would likely be the last time.
"Get out of town. That is all". -
The shimmer moved along the corridor, stopped, backtracked a bit and turned. Phasing into view, Infinitron looked at the wall, smiling inside the helmet. Reaching up his hand he tapped the glass firmly so it cracked and the fire alarm began to ring throughout the prison block.
Flipping his rifle round from behind his back, he checked the magazine, then chambered the first round; raising it up to a battle ready stance he began to walk forward down the corridor, once again shimmering out of view as he looked into each cell; the occupants backing up against the wall as he did. -
Tuesday 27th - 11:00.00
The lights around the city flickered for a few seconds as the power was lost, and the backup was switched to.
This was more than enough time, if planned properly.
An identical scene in several darkened server rooms, each somewhere in a Government building, around the city
A small mechanism inserted the USB dongle, allowing it to piggyback onto the computer server system; giving full access at the press of a button from the desired user.
In 6 homes around the city
In each home, a figure collapsed; dead. The forensic reports would each find that the cause of death was a slow acting poison. Each administered at different points before death. Time of death estimated at 11:00pm. Each body identified as a city politician.
Brickstown
The power LED on the cameras, aswell as the security laser grid, faltered along with the lights. The shimmer moving past them, had it been seen, was smiling.
Dropping down into a vent, silently it moved along, finding a grating and slipping out just as the laser grid came back on.
January 27th - 11:00.03
The lights stayed on steady, noone any the wiser as to what had happened. -
((Ding! Top answer!))
As the door opened, the stasis field became apparent, with the suspended child, Lisa Bryant, completely unharmed.
A block over, the sudden sound of screeching tires could be heard. -
I have an idea.
I'll give you a PM when i get home and we can have a discussion. -
The van spluttered and rolled to a stop, bumping gently into the building infront of it as it rolled off the road.
((Open the van to find a similar scene to the previous van. You can chose whether this or the last was the one with the explosives.)) -
I'm away for a month from the 24th of Feb, so you calling me out for a final showdown might not be such a silly idea.
Bring it on old man. -
In Independence Port, the Brown Van rolled to a stop. Down the street another brown van could be seen screeching off into the distance. As Horizon looked through the windshield, all she saw was a shuttle PC, hooked upto a small generator, into the dashboard and into a GPS unit.
-
As she opened the van, she cringed at the sight of the piled high C4. There was 3 short beeps, then a party popper went off and a small plaque sprang up from the middle.
On it, it read:
"Thanks for playing along. Unfortunately you picked wrong, so no cookies".
The doors on the left hand van sprang open, and inside was David Tonns, suspended in what appeared to be a stasis field. He appeared completely unharmed. Next to the stasis chamber was a large panel with a clearly labeled on/off switch. -
((follows on from the hologram scene from 'In The Land Of The Blind'))
Infinitron: Jack Thompson Jnr - Talos Island. Blue Van
Steve Bush - Skyway. Red Van
David Tonns - Steel Canyon. White van
Peter Hughne - Atlas Park. Grey Van
Lisa Bryant - Kings Row. Black Van
Lucy Prefect - Independence Port. Brown Van
((Go get 'em, feel free to hunt down in your own fashion, e it precognition, psychic powers, superspeed, flight, whatever, but I ask only you stop at the point just before opening you're chosen vehicle for me to advise as to what you will find inside.))
((secondary note: Vans are moving around the zone. When encountering a hero they will speed up and both vans will converge in a predesignated parking lot. There will be no noise of the children 'crying for help' from the vans. There will be little psychic activity of any 'panic' from them either - so will be hard to single them out. There will be no 'ticking' or auditory evidence from the explosives either.)) -
Galaxy City Galaxy Girl Statue Tuesday 27th
In front of the statue a beam of light erupts from the ground and the image of Infinitron appears.
The collected heroes all suddenly glance up, the conversations suddenly quietened.
Strangelet: well yo ho ho and a pint of space rum ...
Terr'Ox: ... hello..
Infinitron: Good evening citizens
Eientei: Oh, this should be amusing
Infinitron: I hope you are all paying attention
Burned Ice glances over, "Oh cool.. A ghost... Someone call the Ghostbusters!"
FIashpoint: It's a bloody hologram. I can tell. I mean A) I can see the damn sidewalk on the other side. B) He's not that thick.
Infinitron: as you may have guessed, this is a hologram; a projection of a recording.
Terr'Ox waves his hand infront of it.
Infinitron: the reason i have come before you is simple; I have a task for you all.
Strangelet: poor resolution ..not a new holo model
Infinitron: too long have you sat idly by as this city fell into the pit it is in; your 'heroics' are not solving the real problem in this city
Awesometastic Girl: The real problem?
Infinitron: Your light handed tactics, your ideas of 'redemption', your ...mercy.
Crazy Dragon messes about with his coin, tossing it from hand to hand, "Get to the flamin' point."
Strangelet: only the strong can hand out mercy
Fea frowns at the hologram
Infinitron: as you may be aware, 6 children were abducted this week; each the child of a politician. These politicians have all been, or are currently being, investigated for corruption. This makes them fair game.
Cinanev: Naah, I'm thinking holo-guy. The guy's clearly nuts in the well-planned way.
Infinitron: as you may have guessed, it was I who apprehended these children
Fea stares at the hologram, lips pressed tightly together.
Infinitron: why? You ask. Well for a simple game of hide and seek
Burned Ice: Yay! Big man! Picking on kids! What an [censored]
Infinitron: Each child is in an area of the city, which I will give you; and each is in a coloured van, which again, I will give you. But is it that simple? Of course not.
Strangelet: ok release them and we will go easy on you ..
Infinitron: Each van has a counterpart in the same area...
Strangelet: this is your only chance ..release them now
Infinitron:... packed with high explosives; open the wrong one - and you have a large problem.
FIashpoint: ...Why do I see that me, being a regen, will be needed...
Infinitron: so pick carefully.
FIashpoint pinches the bridge of her nose
Fea clenches her fists together tightly, trying to control her temper.
Terr'Ox: So.. mind tellin' me where the boom vans are..?
Cinanev yawns. "Okay, so you fancy blowing up parts of the city because you feel like showing us... what? Not to be merciful? So why not just leave 'em?"
Infinitron: so, onto the game, heres the list you are surely all waiting for
Infinitron: Jack Thompson Jnr - Talos Island. Blue Van
Steve Bush - Skyway. Red Van
David Tonns - Steel Canyon. White van
Peter Hughne - Atlas Park. Grey Van
Lisa Bryant - Kings Row. Black Van
Lucy Prefect - Independence Port. Brown Van
Terr'Ox: someone got a pen.. 'cause im not writing it down.
Crazy Dragon: Aye!
Soaring Horizon writes them to a small black bound diary "Sure take mine in a second"
Infinitron: Good luck
The image flickers and disappears, and the small disc explodes, completely vapourising the components.
(( and here's the link to the open RP thread for this:Hide and Seek thread )) -
((ok, should have the ingame log written up by tomorrow morning. Then you can post what happened after retroactively; thanks for anyone who was, and who is going ot be involved. Can easily join in to this bit. There will be a seperate thread for the outcome of tonight and what was discussed))

Steel Canyon
6 vans roll out onto the streets from an underground carpark; each a seperate colour and shade; one Blue, one Red, one White, one Grey, one Black and one Brown. They all quickly seperate in 6 different directions.
2 minutes later from the same carpark; an identical group of vans pulls out and split off aswell.
Unknown Location
"Ok, it begins", came the voice of Joseph Infinus talking to himself. Turning he picked up his communicator and clicked it on.
"Good evening you two, I have your mission. You will need to work together for this, and timing is key. Information is being loaded... now. Good luck, should you need it"
Turning again, he put the communicator down as he clicked it off, and tapped a sequence of buttons on his wristpad.
Meanwhile: Galaxy City - Galaxy Girl Statue
The silver disc slid open to reveal an aperture and a beam of light shot out, and a figure formed above it...
((cue: ingame RP)) -
/sign
Has to be done in SG mode i'd say. My first thought was for an SG only team all in SG mode to get it, but thought it might be limiting. -
"Ok, what's all this noise?" came the shout of Indestructible Force, "I came here for a quiet drink, and this is what i ge.." his rant was cut short as he stumbled forward after receiving a chair to the back of the head. Falling forward into the arms of a beautiful woman was normally a nice prospect; but unfortunately she happened to be lunging forward with a knife. Plunging into the chest of the stumbling villain, he gained balance, took a few steps back and looked down.
"Ah dammit" and with that slumped over onto his side. -
Monday 26th - Breakfast News
"And it is day two since the disappearance of 6 children; each the child of a serving or previous serving Rhode Island politician. Meanwhile in other news, the President has stated...." -
Friday 23rd - Morning
A crowd of people milled through the city on their way to work, bumping into each other here and there. In Galaxy City, some of the crowd cut across infront of the Galaxy Girl Statue. As the crowd thinned towards 9:00, and eventually subsided completely; unnoticed a small silver disc was embedded into the pavement.
Meanwhile
"Good morning angels", came the voice through the communicators; the communicators that clicked onto record if the owner was not within listening distance, "it's time for your first mission each, a test of skill, and a test of devotion to justice. As you may have discovered, each of your communicators is a flash drive aswell, and your targets and some information has been uploaded to them... now. I will know when the missions are done. Preparations are being made for the 'big game', as it were. Good luck, should you need it." And with that the communicators clicked off back to lifelessness.
