After a certain point, people just need to move on. Unfortunately, dredging up ancient wrongs done to people long before one was born is one of humanity's favorite passtimes.

True. Looking back, it's not really anyone's fault but the idiot I mentioned. I was just unduly irate at the time. I just seem to catch jerks easier on other servers.

Essentially, what the "gaming routers" are doing is prioritizing packet traffic for various games and sometimes opening up ports for better access through the firewall. This can, in some instances, reduce latency, and give better gaming experience.

If it's just you on the network, and you're pretty much just gaming, I wouldn't go and spend ridiculous amounts of extra money on a specialty router. You simply aren't going to see a difference.

Note: This is really NOT the point of buy-vs-build anymore. On a pricing front, the OEMs will win every time because they have volume deals that you simply CANNOT match. They can deliver a PC with identical base specs AND software for cheaper than you can put a system together. The days of getting a "cheaper" PC by building your own are basically over.

The point of building your own is about CONTROL of the platform.

• You can choose components that are known stable with your software and each other.
• You can make trade-offs in one aspect of the PC to deliver a machine that's more tightly bound to YOUR desired specs than you can easily buy from a PC vendor (say going with a lower amount of memory up front and/or slightly smaller drives as a trade-off to budget for a faster CPU and/or vidcard).
• You can choose components that aren't necessarily offered by an OEM of choice at the moment.
• Etc.

A lot of the pre-built systems that I've come across from Dell in the last year or two have nice variable speed fans. They start up sounding like a blow dryer, then once the POST is done, they throttle back to something just barely audible unless you're in a truly silent room.

Seeing lots of Compaq/HP the same way, as well as Lenovo.


The trick of keeping it quiet it moving to larger fans. They can rotate more slowly, yet still more the same amount of air without the turbulence which is what generates the noise.

In which case you've just overpaid for a PC of inferior system specs (not talking build quality) comparable to other PCs in the price range. So you got an OS you'd never use.

I've had people bail with multiple alts from a team mid-mission before. It sucks, but you suck it up and drive on.

I've had people who play the "I'll keep poking my head back in until the last mission".

I've had tons of "I'm getting killed more than I want so I'll lie and go elsewhere."

This is the first time I've had a team captain disassemble the damn team because he "had to go".

It's not that everything is like that over there. And I play over there because there's activities that I want to participate in happening on different days on different servers. Additionally I have friends who have a presence on other servers. So, sometimes, when I want to hang out with them, I go off Protector. I spent about 95% of my time on Protector and spend a little bit here and there on other servers.

I don't mind team wipes much (especially at lower levels). Hit shappens.

Without knowing the specs of both the computers that COULD mean that the Mac runs better, or it could mean that your Mac has better hardware specs than the PC. The latter of which wouldn't be a fair comparison.

1: Have you checked to make sure the SW MMO is going to have a Mac version? And your other games?

2: Have you checked the specs on the Mac video to make sure it's compatible with Positron's GR video card recommendations?

3: Is there anything BESIDES games you HAVE to have running on this computer?



Note: If you're going to buy the Mac just to load a copy of Windows into it, save yourself the time, trouble and cash and just buy a regular PC.

Correct. There ARE other defense-heavy sets out there that outclass a baseline Inv/* tank in defense numbers. HOWEVER, they either don't have the resists that Inv/* does (see EGGSHELLS) or pay for it with other drawbacks (Granite). You may want to take a look at Willpower. It's similar to Inv/*, but where Inv/* is more Resist > Defense, Will is more Resist < Defense.

No. Merely one way of approaching tanking. Some tanks just avoid lots of damage. Others soak it up. Still others just output enough damage to kill the opponent before significant damage can be accrued.

High-yield alpha-strikes are still a problem for EVERYONE though.

Realistically, with your build the way you are now, you're tough enough to take on 90+% of the content in the game without appreciable support. The other 10% of the content is stuff that is either designed to prey on your particular combo's weaknesses or just ungodly tough.

You have two choices.

1: Put together a decent support structure (see TEAM)
2: Look for ways to optimize your build.

Inv IS a resist heavy set. But, it's still a mixed Resist/Defense set.

Now, with one enemy in range, someone slotted out with common IOs will cap at around 17.4% defense (goes up a bit with more in range).

With resistance only, while you wind up not taking a massive portion of damage, sufficiently powerful attacks will kill you anyhow. Defense can stop you from getting hit in the first place.

The hot trend, lately, has been towards getting Inv/* close to, at or above the defense cap. It can be done RELATIVELY inexpensively and produces a tanker that, while not a damage output leader, is on par with a Stone tanker in Granite (without the speed, recharge, or damage penalties).

HOWEVER, such tanks are NOT invincible. A sufficiently large mob, or a sufficiently powerful enemy will still whittle him down. It just takes longer.

The object of such an undertaking isn't to allow the tank to operate free of team support. Merely to require LESS support from said team, freeing them up to support each other, or chuck out more damage at the opponents.
