Okay they just upgraded. And some of the servers are QUITE slammed. They've probably determined the need for still-beefier hardware to handle the anticipated load.

And it's better they do it NOW than wait until F2P brings things to a nuclear powered screeching *** halt.

  3. It's also possible that this is a default behavior when you send an item to a global that does not exist.

Now imagine I want to take my Hecatomb and mail it to myself at @Hyperstrike1.

Someone slips me a roofie and in my delerium, I managed to fat-finger in @Hyperstrike11_11_11 which doesn't exist in the system.

Likely it just bounces in the mail system immediately and returns the item to me. Rather than just disappearing off into the aether.

I wanted to make a non-Arachnos costume for her, so I clicked on a Tailor Token in my email box and then went to claim it.

The Character Slot window popped up, except the 2nd slot was the generic male.

So I tried loading up my original costume and saving it to load into the 2nd one. I can't. The 2nd slot is now labeled forever male and, without Super Tailor Access, I can't think of a way to fix this.
Contact support or buy Super tailor access.

While I can see this, unfortunately, at this late a date it's a done deal with AE. Because the devs LITERALLY couldn't police the entirety of a system that flexible, it became a haven for farms.

And I don't care WHAT the devs said or expected. If they couldn't see that minmaxing for farming purposes was GOING to happen they would make Helen Keller appear to be a world-class sniper.

And, because it takes so long to roll out fixes and nerfs in the AE, it's become, by reputation, the purview of farmers at this point. And so long as farmers can build missions that are more renumerative for their time/effort than standard missions, you're going to CONTINUE the perception that AE is the sole purview of farmers.

I feel for the mission engineers. I really do. But "fixing AE" at this point is only a very SMALL part of the battle they're trying to wage. The battle for people's PERCEPTION of AE is basically like trying to stop a tsunami with an egg dicer and a colander (with both hands epoxied to one's nethers).
  6. Ah okay. Didn't zone, but leveling did fix it.
  7. I know they've opened up second tier powers in the Travel APPs. But, just now, I trained my villain up to level 4 and was allowed to select Fly.

Yet, it didn't appear on my tray, and was grayed out in the Powers Window.

So I get screens doing this to me.

Also, previously, I ran the "talk to a guy" mission from Matthew Burke in Fire Wire's arc that was supposed to give me an arachnos costume. It didn't, but the guy talked to me anyhow. It did something similar to this in my Enhancement Window too.

  11. Hyper's Momma's Sloppy Joes

    1 pound Ground Beef
1/2 cup of ketchup (Heinz by preference)
1-1/2 tablespoon of finely diced onion (or onion flakes if you're feeling lazy)
    3 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce
    1 cup of water
1 6oz. can of tomato paste
    1/4 teaspoon of black pepper
    2 tablespoons of vinegar

    OPTIONAL:
    1-1/2 teaspoon of dried mustard
    1 teaspoon of paprika

Drop the can of tomato paste into a pot
Add the water, vinegar, worcestershire, and ketchup.
Heat it on low and stir it until you get an even consistency.
    Stir in the dry ingredients.
Turn the heat up to medium
    Brown the beef.
Strain it and rinse in hot water to remove excess grease
    Add beef to sauce
Let it cook on medium for 10-15 minutes.

It's now ready to serve. Hotdog buns work fairly well, but hamburger buns work fine too.

If this is more than can be eaten in a single sitting, simply put it in a ziplock container (or something similar). It can be nuked just fine without exploding over everything. Just add a little water to it (maybe a teaspoon).

Basically this is a relatively quick and easy dish to set up. You dirty two pots and a strainer. But only one really needs any real work for cleanup.

    Micro Meatloaf/Meatballs

    1 pound of ground beef
1 tablespoon of finely diced onions or onion flakes
    3/4 cup of bread crumbs
    1/4 teaspoon of meat tenderizer
    1/4 teaspoon of garlic salt
    1/8 teaspoon of pepper
    1 egg

    (For meatballs only)
    1/2 cup of milk
    1 tablespoon of parsley flakes

Because I'm single (and because it cooks quicker and more evenly) I tend to make mini-meatloafs.

Basically just knead the ingredients together and form it into vaguely loaf-shaped lumps.

Use a CorningWare (or other oven-safe glass/ceramic) dish with a glass lid. Put a little water in the bottom (just enough to coat it evenly). This will prevent the loaf/loaves from sticking/burning.

Place the loaves in and cover the dish.

Cook at 350 degrees for ABOUT an hour. Don't simply set a timer and come back. Check on it periodically. With smaller mini-loaves, once they're toasted brown on top, they're usually done inside. With a larger single loaf, you're need to give it a bit more cooking time.

If you want to use a meat thermometer, the minimum temperature at which the meat should be considered safe to eat will be 160 degrees Fahrenheit. Note, this doesn't necessarily mean the meat is fully browned at this point.

Once they're done to taste, pull them out of the oven and remove them from the dish immediately. Otherwise they'll absorb all the fat floating around in the bottom of the dish.

My family was never much on the tomato paste on top with meatloaf. And since I was an insatiable eating machine as a child, the food was pretty much ready-served at this point. But you can garnish your meatloaf in any way you wish.

Note: If you're single, this is going to be several meals worth of food. I recommend storing in CorningWare if you're going to be eating it very soon. If it's going to be a bit, put the remainder in ziplock bags and they freeze just fine.

I don't recommend nuking them to reheat. Especially ones that went into the freezer. This results in toughness (and NOT the APP power). Place them in a CorningWare dish and reheat at 300 degrees. Again, with a small amount of water on the bottom of the dish.

Have run into a couple situations in the past couple years of CLM (Career Limiting Maneuver) from dedicated backup personnel.

We just picked up a poor *AHEM!* this past week who simply wasn't backing up their main customer database. They're still on an old dBase system. The data's mostly still in the DBF file. And the data's mostly in the notes file. But the index file is completely borked. Automated tools have mostly failed to reindex it. So this poor *AHEM!* is looking at either kissing this database goodbye or paying ridiculous amounts of money for us to MANUALLY go through and hand-reassemble the files (and wait weeks/months for it).

Another one of our clients up in Canuckistan had something similar happen to their customer database a few years back. They had their drive array *POOP!* the bed with total drive loss (spindles LOCKED) AND it fried the controller. QUITE impressive I may add.

So we go back into their backups. And there's nothing newer than 6 month old stuff in there. It finally comes out that their backup monkeys were getting file locks on the directories with the databases in them because someone would invariably leave the client app open. Instead of getting a backup agent smart enough to CLOSE THE FILES, they just "neatened up" their backup by excluding the app and all its databases from the backup job!

And the list goes on. And on. And on.
  16. Pfft. I'm not twinking my new tank at all. He's going to brought up to 50 the same damn way the ORIGINAL Hyperstrike was!

{Aide} Uh boss. the original Hyperstrike was brought up on excessive amounts of street sweeping.

Okay so slightly BETTER than the way the ORIGINAL Hyperstrike was!

He's already sitting on something like 6 million at level 19 (I've been lazy about marketing with him). But by the time he hits 22, he'll have at least 8 figures working the market for him and be fully SO'ed out.

You have to understand that there is no such thing as 100% uptime. "Five Nines" or better is possible but very expensive. You not only need redundant hardware (which is generally easily enough for most things except CPU, RAM and the system board) but also some mechanism which can protect against software failure (which gets exponentially more complicated as the complexity of the software increases).

Even with a multiple host, VM-based solution with failover clustering on a well designed SAN with full network redundancy across multiple physically-separated sites is only good as long as the application itself keeps working correctly and the users don't do anything stupid like delete a load of important records or accidentally lose $2bn in dodgy stock market trading.

Heh. I still remember having an entire IT department go pale when I suggested rebooting their server. Essentially they were all helpdesk guys who left the server alone and never messed with it. Because it took on the order of 40 minutes for the machine (an AD box running a MONSTROUSLY HUGE Exchange) and they were all but crippled when it was down.

After doing this and relogging, it lets me zone in.

This is happening on every mission map, on all of my characters. Any time I go into a mission, I have to force close the client and relaunch to be able to enter. I've rebooted, reset my network connection, checked to ensure my drivers are fully up to date, and otherwise checked everything it could be on my end.

This is getting ridiculous now. Since the servers have come back up, I've had to force close the client at least a dozen times so far just to be able to get into missions. As you can imagine, this is not conducive to group play, or playing in general.

Start a thread in the technical forum. Use the "Help Me!" guide in my sig to provide your CoH Helper and Hijack This logs. If you're hanging and crashing that isn't the server. That's you.

Actually yeah. I have. That's the problem with assumptions. There's a big difference between HA server farms in electronic trading houses and a game. Primarily the amount of money backing the venture. Downtime for the latter costs someone a couple thousand bucks an hour. In the former, it's millions or billions.

Secondarily, the proper staffing levels to support an HA environment. I don't claim to know how many people Paragon and NCWest have on staff to support their game(s). But I'd find it damnably difficult to believe their development staff can run on a five-nines basis with appropriate staffing levels 24x7x52.

Now if you want to go ahead and pony up a half billion or so REAL dollars, and keep doing it every year, I'm sure Paragon and NCSoft would LOVE to go to an HA format for the game. Then they can actually put the staff on to support that kind of thing.

Until then, reality shows its ugly face.

Question: Is every issue (not Issue as Issue 21, issue as in "problem") equal in severity to every other? Warning, any answer besides "no" will demonstrate a complete lack of understanding.

In short, different problems require different responses.

    Quote:
However, they didn't. They pushed it off until later, and then chose a "later" time where a large number of people will be playing rather than a "later" time where few people would be - I very seriously doubt that there are fewer players on at noon on a Saturday than there are at, say, 4am on the same day.
And asking the people who would be patching it, who've already been at work 12+ hours, to sit on their thumbs for another 4-6 hours then come back in the middle of the night is unconscionable.

And dropping the servers for anything but THE most severe bugs during prime time is ridiculous.

    Quote:
I'm actually somewhat for the maintenance, because I want them to fix bugs. But it does wreck what I was going to do with my afternoon, and it didn't have to. That's the "discussion" part of this that I agree with - if it can wait for a better time, make it a time that's actually better.
Yeah. I'd planned on playing this afternoon too. Oh well, going to hit a movie instead.
  25. Been trying to see the "Warrior" film all week, but can't fit the limited showtimes in my area into my schedule (going to one in about 15 minutes since the game's down for patching).

So, instead, I went and caught Rise of The Planet of The Apes last night.

I actually enjoyed it. The first half is a little slow, but quite thought provoking. The second half has all the ape-delivered beatdown action you'd expect from such a film.

And I'll say it again. It's a damn shame that Andy Serkis is best known for never having his face truly on the screen. But the man is absolutely phenomenal at it!

Not going to get too much into spoilers here.

Draco Malfoy gets the signature line for the property in this one.
Rodney McKay, playing against type but still a living engine of destruction.
I love how they tied the original film into it as well.
Someone seems to have forgotten that in a truly 3-dimensional environment there's no such thing as "front lines".
