    Grav/FF solo?

    Hi,

I'm new to CoX and so far I've tried out Tanks and Scrappers and thought I'd give a controller a try. I like to build characters based on concept and not really on putting to together things just to make the best character I can. I looked over what is available and thought that a Gravity/Force Field controller would be something I'd like. (I'm sure that I'm not the first and doubt I'll be the last)

Hopefully this has not been asked and answered. I looked over the guides and did some searches but did not find anything that helped.

Anyway, hears the thing. While I like teams, I also play solo, allot, and I need my characters to be able to survive on their own as well as part of a team. The question is, can this combo survive solo.

I've only done the tutorial with this character and one mission from the first contact and I've found this extremely difficult and extremely slow.

Is there anything that I can do to make this a solo friendly character? Does it get better as the character matures? If I was going to build this character strictly for solo play what type of choices should I make as far as powers are concerned?

From my experience, the timer keeps running even when I'm logged out. I have gotten disconnected and taken as much as 20 minutes to get back on and these 20 minutes where gone from the timer.

Maybe it's just me, but that timer does not stop when I log out...

But I've also given some thought to the "Mission brief should include location" and in some ways, it does.

    If the mission brief states:
    1) that the location is local, I generally find that the mission is in the same zone I am in, no matter what zone that is. I've taken the same mission several times with different characters by phone and this seems to be the case, but may not be 100%
    2) that "I need to get over there" (wherever there is) then I bet, and am right most of the time, that the mission will be in any zone that I am not currently in, no matter what zone I am currently in. Same experience as above when taking missions by phone.
    3) The mission is for a specific type of enemy and there is no indication of either of the above then most of the time it will be in the zone where this enemy is prevalent at that level... the Family at 20-25 plan on independence port, etc.

The above are not hard and fast rules, but with my limited experience (I haven't actually been playing that long) I can usually tell when reading the brief how far I'm going to travel. If for example, it is a timed mission and I have a strong suspicion that it will be in another zone, no matter what zone I'm in then I travel to the train I think has the best chance of taking me to where I'm guessing it is and this guess is generally based on the enemy involved.

On the other hand, there are some missions that seem to always be in the same zone every time, no matter what. Like the 3rd mission in the Arc that gives you the ouro portal, this one has always been in SC for me.

Some mystery in the location is fun, however, getting a timed mission and finding out that it is in Perez Park and then finding out the door is in "The Maze" and it takes more than half of the allowed time just to find the door..... Hugely annoying!

I know this topic is a little old, but...No, all timed missions are not necessarily posted in the mission brief. Just the other night, it was late and I didn't have much time to play so I took a S&D mission. I forget the group I was looking for, but it was in the level 15 to 20 range. I figured I could do that and then hit the sack. So I go out and defeat 15 of whatever it was. Next thing I know I finish off number 15 and a new mission pops up with a 1:30 time limit. All I could think was WTF! Next thing I know it's an hour past when I wanted to be asleep and I'm just turning off the computer.....

However, I do agree that the mission brief should at least state what zone the mission will take place in.

    Gravity Geysers

Just wanted to make sure because with swift and quickness both slotted with SO's her base speed is better than 25mph and this is at level 22. It's only going to get faster, maybe not much, but still that's quite a bit faster than your basic jogging speed.

    Gravity Geysers

I was just reading this thread and the whole "Powers Off" thing and "Entering at the right speed" thing and now I have to ask a question, and keep in mind that I'm new and have never seen this zone yet.

I have a Claws/SR scrapper with both Swift and Quickness, neither of which can be "turned off" is this going to give me a problem when I finally reach this stage in her development?

I don't think I'll ever be that person that broadcasts "Hey, anyone got an Ouro protal I can borrow". Besides, I've generally always got my own well before hitting 25. (They never broadcast where I am or I would let them use it, maybe, if I was planning to use it). Quite frankly it is the main may I cut down my travel time. Going to Bricks, Ouro to Talos and you're right next to Green Line. Then I'll tell you that I never take a travel power as soon as they become available, I find there are other more important things that I need first.

Anyqwy.. at level 20, go see city rep and do cape arc, go to icon and save them from the Tsoo, do the Midnight Arcs that lead up to Ouro. By 22 you have the portal.

As far as not getting the badges I can understand, and I guess it could be mind numbing. It's all new to me and nothing seems mind numbing... yet.

I guess my real disappointment is not that people don't show up for the events, I can understand that they are busy with other things or not interested in that particular badge for the hero they are currently playing. I guess my disappointment is when people that do show up refuse when offered a team. I suppose that some of these people have a thing about blind invites, I do myself under most circumstances (and always refuse them immediately), but I will generally except them anyway if I'm at an event, assuming that it is someone else at the same event making the request. I know that there is not always time to send a tell to ask first and it is much easier to simply click on my hero and click "invite to team".
  8. An update.

Up to level 19 now and I took Practiced Brawler at 16 as suggested and slotted two recharge reduction at 17. With two 20++ DO's the difference between duration and recharge is 24 seconds. Miss sleepy time still gets held/slept/immobilized/disorientate, but not nearly as much. At least they do not hit 100% of the time now.

Actually, I've looked in every category, found nothing, so, I'm assuming there is something wrong or that I cannot get the badge for some reason.

As for events in general, I like them and wish more people would show up for them. I used to show up all the time when there was "Supernatural Activity" but I've learned that the only way to win this is two basically have a full team at each of the 4 banners, defeat enough spawn to make the banner vulnerable then defeat these and then all converge on the GM that will appear. I've discovered that the chances of 4 teams getting together for this is pretty slim, so I stopped.

Been trying to get the badges for fighting fires, I go there and try to get everyone into a team so that we can all get the badges that much quicker. 9 times out of 10 everyone that shows up refuses the invite... I relly don't understand. You need to defeat 25 hellions, no problem, but 25 fires on the other hand, by yourself when there are 4 other people fighting fires that means you'll get 1 maybe 2 for each event so you'll need to visit roughly 10 to 15 fires.

Why the general lack of interest in events? Are they that old? don't you want to get the badges for all of your toons? If the events are that old then I imagine the missions are getting pretty stale for these people as well.

Well, lately I've taken to not running from any events, I even try them with my low level toons, but like I said, I'm not seeing anything. Does the badge for defeating a certain number of Zombies not appear the way the others do?

Like I said above, with most "defeat" badges as soon as you defeat the first enemy that counts toward the badge that badge appears in the defeat category with a count listed telling you how many you've done. Is the badge for the zombies special, will it magically be awarded when I hit the right number? Is there something special I need to do, other than defeating a certain number, to get it?

    Zombie Invasions

Can someone splain me the point of defeating zombies during a zombie invasion? I tried looking it up on the Wiki, and it lists badges but these are only awarded during Halloween events. Not to mention that I've defeated many of them now and gotten nothing. There is no badge listed that I might get, something that always happens with defeat badges the with the first defeat that counts toward the badge. They do not award much in the way of XP of Inf, I looked at the info and they don't drop anything special in the way of salvage.

Am I missing something, or are these Zombie Invasions primarily there to cause me grief?

Yup, ran into ouroborus with my first toon (the tank) and I make sure I do that arc every time now (I feel like the character is kinda naked without the ability to use that travel option, makes it so much easier to get around). I have done a few of the arcs that she missed along the way there, but the only thing really available that way are the arcs and I want to see some of the other missions as well, although I may skip many of the ones that I've seen with other toons I'd like to explore what's available and take a slower approach. I'm sure most people have seen it all, but this is all new and exciting to me. I like taking my time, reading the clues and following the stories.

    Haven't gotten a 50 yet.

I've found this with most of the characters I've tried so far, and this one in particular. With the others I did not see much, I took the missions that sounded interesting, avoiding the ones that I knew would cause a problem and as a result I usually leveled out of the contact before ever completing. The only ones that I tried to make sure I completed where the story arcs. (Then again, when I started I didn't realize that the contacts stopped talking to me because the hero reached a certain level). So, I've been at level 14 with this one for some time to prevent this and see more.

Not a problem for Miss Sleepy Time I'm well on my way to getting the first damage and debt repay badges and I've only got a few more minutes of held/immobilized/sleeping left to get that badge. Although, having XP turned off through 20 missions has helped ad to this. Quite honestly, and this is only from my newbie viewpoint, those are important milestones to reach. Only my tank I proudly display the "Indestructible" badge title. She had trouble in her teens as well.

I'll give the alternate build some thought, but I like to try to live with my choices, mostly because it gives me a better understanding of what works and what doesn't. Using the alternate build now means that I won't have that option in the future and who knows what other mistakes I'll make. Better to try to live with it and save that Alt for as long as I can.

Not at all, That's why I'm here, I'm extremely new to the game and most advice is helpful. the example I gave above was rather frustrating since the only enemy was the mage and little damage was being inflicted to my the hero and it was quirte frustrating. I was left with continuously clicking on an attack hoping to get lucky. I was just thinking that I'm going to have to power down my computer to get out of it when I managed the hit that caused him to explode.

Looking at the descriptions when choosing new powers is still a little confusing. For example, the description of Practiced Brawler coupled with the long recharge time and high endurance cost (which is what I got out of the short description) led me to believe that I could better spend the choice on another attack or in on one of the pool powers, not realizing that this would be more beneficial later on.

Thank you JAXMAN for the quick reply. I haven't taken practiced brawler yet do to making choices about power pools and such. This advice has definitely pushed it's selection to the top of the list for level 16 and adding an enhancement slot at 17, though I won't have access to SO's until 22 at least I know that this can be helped at some point and I won't be using that pet name forever and that even with DO's things may improve somewhat.

I always expect some growing pains but I haven't run into a trouble as bad as this before. Granted, I haven't been playing that long and I'm sure there are others
  16. Hi,

I'm relatively new and I'm trying out a new scrapper that I lovingly refer to as Miss Sleeping/Held/Stunned.

She's currently at level 14 and it seems that if an enemy can inflict one of these things that they do so with near 100% accuracy. Just last night she got in a fight with a CoT Madness Mage and she was asleep for over 10 minutes. Nothing else happening. The madness mage just kept putting her to sleep while I waited for something else to happen. Finally she got in one wack in between naps and he blew up, then she went to the hosp, but at least it was over and it was something different. (I went back after restocking my supply of break frees)

Anyway, I was wondering if there is anything that I can do to help with this problem, suggestions of which powers may make this happen less often.

Before you answer I just want to let you know that I'm not into Min/Maxing or creating the perfect build. I create heroes based on a concept and try my best to stick with that concept adding powers that I believe fit the character and not necessarily what is best to win. In addition to claws and super reflexes I am working on the leaping and health power pools, again, because I think they fit and I may not even take all of these.

My question is simply, are there powers that can help with this so that I can decide if they will fit with my concept of who she is or should I make sure I always stock up of break frees. Will this change in the future as she gains levels or is it something that I can depend on staying the same and that I need to learn to live with? Will some of the powers in her primary and secondary that I'll get later alleviate some of this problem?

To extend your analogy, he isn't telling you where all of the easter eggs are he's telling you where the one that you missed is once you've found all of the others.
I would have to agree that at times it may be helpful to end some stress. On Saturday I was doing a mish where I had to defeat all the Devouring Earth in a lab. After I thought I was done I had to search the place again, not once, but three times. I finally found it hiding in a corner under a walkway, I must have ran past the thing 5 or 6 times and never saw it or had it notice me for the matter because I'd been under that walkway several times. It must have taken me 30 minutes to locate the bugger and when I was done I logged because I was quite frustrated. I'm not saying that such a feature would not be useful, but I would like to be able to choose when to show the locations so that I can use it when I really need it to preserve my sanity.
  18. Forgive me if this has been suggested/requested/(rejected) before. I did several searches and came up empty. If this has been suggested before and you can point me to it so that I can read anything that's already been said I would be grateful.

    That said...

I think it would be really great if I could tailor of even minimize the effects on the power pool powers the way that we can tailor the main power sets.

As an example the colors and effects on "Combat Jumping" the yellowish/brownish colors on this look great on my toon with a similar color theme (a brown furred cat) but on my dark armor/melee toon it looks rather dreadful added to the gray, smokey effects of these power sets.

Maybe it could be something that must be paid for at Icon?

But, knowing the map by heart does not help you know if you've actually been in a particular place on a map. Take for instance the outdoor instanced missions. I'm looking to free 5 hostages or whatever and the locations of these vary, not to mention that they are usually hidden in corners requiring my scour every inch of the map trying to find them all. Without the fog of war I would have no idea if I've already looked in a particular alley or not. When it is a timed mission it is hard enough to sweep the streets in the time limit. Without knowing where I've already looked I might re-check the same place more than once, wasting valuable time. Hopefully, when I get this far I can choose not use it.

While it can be frustrating to find that one glowie or baddy hiding in some corner, or timed outdoor maps (like the one mentioned above) I can honestly say that I would not particularly like this enhancement either. This would be like going on an easter egg hunt and knowing ahead of time where all the eggs are... What's the point? Isn't part of the challenge not knowing where the eggs are? Again, I hope that if this is included that I can turn the feature off.

I really tend to agree with this. I depend on the mission map and knowing where I have been. When I'm alone I will even go down corridors I know are empty so that the map fills out and I know I don't have to look down there again in those instances where I'm looking for a hider (you know, it's a defeat them all and you've gone through the entire place and you need to find that one baddie hiding behind a crate somewhere).

Yes, I agree, sometimes it becomes obvious who the point man is without needing to make a designation, but the point is that there should be one.

For instance the team I mentioned I was in a few nights ago. It was obvious that the other tank wanted to lead the way so I simply let him and did my best to keep up. But, he was the point man. He went in first, I followed and the controllers stayed well out of the "Combat Zone" Allowing us to keep all the aggro focused where it should be. There was never an instance when the controllers went off ahead of us or without us or when I went a different direction on my own.

Team makeups may vary, but there should always be the one guy or gal that leads the way. I've seen this more times than I can remember... The team gets to a complicated intersection (room) with 5 ways to go. 3 corridoors and 2 flights of stairs, one going up and one going down. It still makes my jaw drop when one heads in each direction and I'm left wondering which one I should follow. Generally I take a quick look at my map and figure out which way the team leader went and that's the way I go, of course, unless he/she's the one standing there with me spinning in circles... Then I laugh because I find it quite amusing.
  22. Sorry I haven't looked anyone up in game yet. I write down stuff, but I generally makes my notes at work and then manage to forget them, then the cleaning people come in and throw all my scrap paper away :P

Some have mentioned looking for groups that tend more towards RP, this would likely be a good choice for me. I mentioned that I've been around for a while... I've been RPing since the first version of D&D if that gives you any idea. This may have some effect on my views. Problem is strictly RP is that I don't type so fast. When I try to take the time to message the team.. well with the pace that is usually set with no one waiting for anything, including giving the Tank a chance to catch their breath ("REST") this gets a little difficult.

I do appreciate all the pointers and suggestions given so far. Things are looking up. Started putting my own small teams together. I've found I prefer the small 2 or 3 man team, 4 is okay, larger teams when they are absolutely necessary for TFs. These tend to have more organization and less chaos. It seems the smaller the team the more there is a need to have some plan of attach rather than just wading in and smashing everything. Steamrollers are okay once in a while. Sometimes I even enjoy rolling through a map like a steam roller. Did this with 2 tanks and 2 controllers the other night and it was amazing how we just rolled through everything (The tactics came in when there was one baddie left hiding on the map). But as a general rule I'll take the purposeful approach.

Also, when I talk about tactics, I'm not saying that every step needs to be planned out bringing everything to a gruelingly slow pace. Simple things like knowing who the point man is. If there is only one tank then the tank is point, simple as that, if there is more then one then they need to decide who is point. No tank, then the leader needs to state who the point man is. No one but the point man or the leader makes a decision on what direction to go, the leader defers to the point man (if not the same person) unless the leader knows better for some reason. The point man sets the pace. Simple things like always turning in the same direction at intersections rather than choosing a random direction. If the point man stops at an intersection to look around, give him/her a minute to choose a direction before you run off in your own direction (really it's only a second or two to pan around and look at the choices, are you that impatient that you can't wait a few seconds more to bash the next mob?) The squishes should stay several paces back, let the tougher members meet the enemy first, and everyone stays behind the point man until the enemy is engaged. As a tank, I expect to be at the front leading the way, not trying to catch up with the others. As a troller, I don't want to be in the front and I will gladly follow whoever the point man is and let them make the decision on direction and wait for them to do so. These, to me, seem like very simple things that would be good for any team, no matter what its makeup or how quickly they want to reach the objective.

This is extremely good to here.

And yes, most of my experiences have been on Virture. Please don't take this as saying that everyone on Virtue is rude. I have met some very good and helpful people there as well. It just seems that I run into more rudeness than niceness and that I've had bad luck. I'm not going to condemn the entire server simply because of the bad apples I've seem to run into.

And I'll state again. I do not presume that any style of play is wrong, I simply like some styles more than others. Yes, there is organization, even in the chaos. I can see this when I look at the HP and End. lines that are not falling and the buff symbols below it. I've also found that I like smaller sized teams when these are feasible, 2, 3, 4 of us.

To be completely honest, the reason that I have not tried starting teams much (I have tried and I've had both good and bad tries) is my lack of experience in the game. It's the fear of being told I'm doing things all wrong in a non-constructive manner. I wouldn't mind pointers and help but when you're main experience has been getting flamed it does tend to make one a little leery.
  24. I did not realize that the team cannot move on if all members do not exit the current mission. I will keep this in mind for the future. How do you think it would have been taken if I said, "I feel like sticking around" and quit the team? I'm guessing, not very well.

I have not been lucky enough to get on any teams where the leader asks questions or sets any type of ground rules. Knowing what the leader expected ahead of time would be a huge benefit. In the one case where I stayed behind, to be honest I did not realize that I shouldn't be doing the side missions (sometimes I find it difficult to keep track of everything going on) and I just ran off to find them. Next time I'm standing at a door waiting on a team member I will ask questions. I've tried asking questions like -> "What's your team doing" and I get "Missions" like that explains everything, I don't generally find out until I open the door.

I am still learning, and while I am learning the layouts of the maps and I know which way to go just by entering a room, I still like to take some time. To me it's like re-reading a good book for the 4th (or 5th or Nth) time. I know the whole story, but I read it anyway because I enjoy the story. Like has been said several times by myself and others in this thread, it's about the journey. Agreed, there are many styles of play, I've seen a few, but "run and smash" or "dash and bash" is what I've seen the most of, and it's just not for me.
  25. Well, it's been a while longer and I have been able to find others that feel as I do.... however the one thing that annoys me the most is.... (well, i'm not sure of the technical term) ... but when another member of the team makes me super fast so that just tapping the "w" key sends me across a giant room making it completely impossible to navigate.

I don't mind death, you even get badges for paying off debt, but I doubt I will ever like rushing to the end and completing the mish a fast a possible and running to the next one (even when I've done the same one with 3 other characters). Maybe it is because I detest chaos and enjoy organization.

Take for instance a protect or mayhem mission (not sure of the exact term, the one where you're protecting the banck). When I do this in a team everyone rushes in, defeats the guards and rushes to the vault. However, when I'm alone I pull the group in the first room to the door and I position myself there. 1) The boss in the vault has to go out the front door 2) the 15 minute timer does not start until I've defeated the boss. I simply need to wait a moment till he/she comes to me and keep him/her from leaving. 3) I also like looking for those side missions which most teams do not do, at least not in my experience. I even stayed behind once to do them on my own and got begged by the leader to please exit because they wanted to rush to the next mish.

Here's a question: How do I state, politely, in my search comment, that I am not looking for this type of team? How do I tell the team, politely, that I'm leaving because I do not like the way they go about things? I've tried and generally what I get is a lot of hate from the team leader and other members about how wrong I am for leaving.

This last part is the biggest sticking point, If the game is full of hateful people that can't take a simple "Your style of play is not my cup of tea" then I do not see much future in my staying. From my 2 months of experience this seems the norm rather than the exception. Have I simply been unlucky?

I really enjoy teams, when those in the team are not simply looking to rush through it just to get the XP and move on. What I've taken to doing is to say, "I have time for one mish and then I have to log", then I see how it goes, if it's good I then say, "well, maybe just one more". If if goes badly (which is more then 75% of the time), then I leave, go to a day job location and log off for a while. And still, I get hateful comments about how inconsiderate it is to leave the team or that I'm just a freeloader, even after telling them up front that I'll only do one and see how it goes.
