  1. Part of the problem is the proliferation of several currencies, and the imperfect convertability of one to another. First, there was only inf; now there are Vanguard merits, reward merits, and now tickets. All require that you do different things to accumulate them. And as a result, the most common and prior in time currency - inf - is having its value eroded. This is a problem that requires dev attention.

It is pretty much self-evident that prices for AH salvage are broken. The prices simply are unfeasible to meet by the inf gained in normal play. If a piece of 10-25 common salvage can be reliably bought on the AH for 5K inf, but a level 10 character gets less than 15 inf per minion defeated, this means that the player is going to need to defeat 333 enemies to meet the AH price. And many items of low level salvage go for many times that. The only player who can hope to participate is the one who also plays the AH game herself. The AH itself has lost its function of delivering needed pieces into the hands of those who will actually use it. Prices need to be normalized and they need to be normalized yesterday.

The first step, IMO, is to enable common salvage to be directly purchased to order with inf and with tickets, rather than being rolled for. I'd suggest the same ratio (40%, or 2.5:1) used for SO sales to specialty vendors; so that a piece of common salvage that vendors for 250 could be bought for 625, uncommons for 2500, and so forth. Perhaps a special story or even a task/strike force could be used to unlock this feature. The fair price for specific items of common salvage should be 20 tickets, and that functionality should be added to the MA store as well.

The Golden Rule says that you should treat other people the way you'd want to be treated yourself. "Buy low and sell high" violates the Golden Rule. You can figure out why; it's not hard.

The problem with underselling on the market for moral reasons is the likelihood that whatever you sell will end up in the hands, not of someone who's going to use the salvage, but someone who will relist it for closer to the going rate to make an unethical gain. I'd rather vendor the surplus myself.

The devs really need to shore up the value of inf currently by adding stores that sell common salvage directly at a fixed price. I'd suggest a base cost at the current specialty ratio of 2.5:1; so that salvage that vendors for 250 can be bought for 625, 1000 for 2500, and so forth. Perhaps a special mission or even a task/strike force could be added to open up each of the three level tiers, and access to the store based on the badge it awards. This would fix the problem.
  3. If you are on Victory server, look me up if you are on prime-time Eastern time in the evenings. I'd be glad to show you how I play my WP tankers.
  4. Stone is the best simple tank, though. You can make a stone tank that can survive quite well without set bonuses.

Your Willpower scrapper is that squishy? Did you take Tough and Weave? My Spines/WP scrapper is the toughest one I know, and has tanked the ITF and STF - not my first choice for a master's run to be sure, but better than any of my tankers on Ghost Widow.

Invulnerability is probably the next choice. Here, too, you will want Tough and Weave. Invuln is pretty good out of the box, but I'd check out Call Me Awesome's softcap guide for help getting close to Stone in toughness without the aesthetic and playstyle annoyances.

By my recollection, a level 10 character gets around 10-15 influence per even level minion defeated; this may vary by faction. At a generous estimate of 15, to pay 1K inf that character must defeat 66 minions. For 5K, 333. Assuming normal play as intended, common salvage is prohibitively expensive for low level characters at current prices.
  6. Both are fine choices. I've played them both and enjoyed them both.

If you're concerned about Fire's lack of control, do what I usually do anyways and take Air Superiority and Fly as your travel power. I take AirSup even with the weapon sets because the near certain knockdown is quite helpful.
  7. I wouldn't make long term decisions about slots based on what you're fighting at level 5.

At any rate, I would plan on giving Shadow Maul six slots eventually, and probably six slots early. Slotting decisions at TO levels probably should be made with a road to their long term benefits. But over the short term, you aren't going to be able to enhance the effects of TI or DP significantly with TOs.

Slotting up your primary can be done a bit later, in the levels after you start taking stuff like your travel power prereq, your travel power, Swift or Hurdle, and Health. The next level after those will give you 2 free slots that you aren't immediately going to need to give to the power you just took. Give those go-anywhere slots to TI and Dull Pain and slot up your attacks to the extent possible while you can afford it.

Later on, 32+, look into the Multi-Strike set for Shadow Maul. That is a very basic, well balanced, and affordable set that gives bonuses that aren't game-changing but certainly useful; and as Dark Melee you have several places it could go, and they do add up.

If you leave a bid up overnight you can buy common salvage for significantly less than 100K and generally under 20K in some cases much lower (there are a couple of exceptions such as Nevermelting Ice where the overnight price is more like 30k-40K).
A level 25 Damage or Healing enhancement costs 30K from the in-game store that sells them. (60K at level 50, IIRC). The max you can hope to get selling one, assuming you were lucky enough to get one to drop at level 25, is 40% of that (12K at 25, again). Now, a lower level character is unlikely to need a Nevermelting Ice; but generally, the most in demand low level salvage seems to tend even higher than the 41-50 stuff. Even if you sell your drops, a character relying on her own resources is going to find 20K too steep of a price to pay regularly.

Now, I'm reluctant to just sell salvage drops at low levels, even at the current prices. First, my conscience won't let me. Second, if I sell it I know I may eventually have to buy another at the same price or higher if I wanted to try to get one from the market. Since salvage doesn't spoil and the cost of storing it is paid in a different currency (prestige) whose value is fixed by the game rules, and which seldom can be truly lost, the inflationary trend makes saved white salvage gain in "value" just by sitting there.

I am the CEO of long-established supergroups with fully built bases. The bases have now been maxed for salvage storage; I have 2 enhancement storages, 2 insp storages, and the rest are devoted entirely to salvage racks. They were originally installed to hold all the oranges that were made when I converted all of the base salvage into invention salvage. Now they're full of mostly white salvage.

My own characters form a command economy: "from each according to her luck, to each according to her needs." If something drops that somebody else can use, it's made, stored, and claimed. My low level characters have racks they fill with their salvage drops, which are then made by high levels who are after crafting badges. I do buy generic recipes from the market for this purpose. If specific white salvage items are needed, they're rolled for at the MA. I also use high level enhancement drops to fund my lower level characters without hassle. Merits also form a part of the common pool; my more completely built characters use their merits to buy recipes that answer to low levels' more urgent needs.

This may not be the most efficient use of time or resources, but it's more or less the regime that the current state of the markets have forced on me. I wish that salvage were available at the market for prices that my low level characters could afford to pay with the inf they get defeating mobs, but that seldom was the case and currently is not.
  9. Fire/DB is a fairly good choice for a tanker. Fire is a very undemanding primary with at least four skippable or postponable powers including the 7, 8, and 9 tiers; you have the basics down at level 12. This helps with a demanding attack set like DB is.

Plan on saving 125 merits for the Steadfast -KB IO; one's really enough, but the market's a bad joke right now. The Karma works too, but you have to have a defense power to put it in, and Fire doesn't get that natively apart from Temperature Protection, which you should still skip. Or you could bite the bullet and take Acrobatics.

Not sure that there's a whole lot of point in discussing it, especially not here. When lower level white salvage sells for 100K a pop, there's no way a player playing normal PvE content as originally intended can afford that, unless they are extremely lucky with drops they can't use, or are being twinked.

What farming means to me, essentially, is that I no longer hoard orange salvage, which can be ordered by need with tickets. I hoard white salvage, so that when I get a lucky recipe drop I can actually make it. I also strongly would like to see white salvage be made purchasable directly rather than rolled for, which is wasteful and sometimes fills your available space before you get what you need. I think that making it directly purchasable would have some calming effect on prices; it seems to have had that effect on orange salvage prices. But other measures to restore the value of influence to pre-i14 levels need to be taken.
  11. "So you're Nictus. I bet your momma's proud."

    "Μεγαλη η Αρτεμις Εφεσιων!"

"You remind me of Frida Kahlo, $target. I think it's the eyebrows."

    "Yes, I heard your safety word, $target. I'm just pretending I didn't."

"Thou, $target, wouldst live in the rank sweat of an enseamed bed, stew’d in corruption, honeying and making love over the nasty sty."

"This $target reminds me of King George. I think it's the wig. Or the belly."
  12. While I'd consider myself a casual, I don't see my limited use of the market reflected well in any of the descriptions.

I don't farm MA or missions.

I have several characters levelling or in development, and I use them mostly to run task forces. Useful drops get crafted and used or saved for later. Useless drops get vendored or sold on the market.

When I need salvage for crafting, I solo story based MA arcs until I have enough tickets to roll for it or buy it outright. I never buy salvage on the market. Farming has devalued influence to the point that you can't afford anything on the market with the influence made in non-farm PvE play, so I don't even think about buying anything there.

When I have to roll at white salvage to get the piece I need, I either store the rest in a SG rack or sell it at the market, though I have qualms about that; most tech stuff and some magic stuff often gets vendored. I seldom have to, fortunately, because I keep a large store of white salvage in the SG base, and try to keep one of everything in the 45-50 group and a variety of lower level stuff on hand. Rare and uncommon salvage is bought straight up with tickets on an as-needed basis.

I hate having to random roll for white salvage and wish that it were available for straight up purchase. I never, ever random roll with tickets or merits apart from white salvage.
  13. The ratings I hand out are utterly subjective.

I use official content as a baseline - radio missions and old-line stories. Most official content would rate a 2 at best in MA. Too many defeat-alls and obvious time sinks. A few, like A Titan Called Joe, might rank higher. When I play most official content, my mind is on one thing. How do I get to the end of this, claim my rewards, merits, or badges, unlock the next bank mission, or whatever the goal is, with the least amount of time and the least amount of fighting?

The MA missions I will rate higher are the ones that contain enough novelty and surprise to take me out of this rut, and make me wonder instead -- what strange NPCs are in this? What will the patrols say next?

I was not sure. Still, that's a fair amount of stacked chance for -recharge both ways, especially since whatever is in the caltrops, quills, and aura is getting slowed many different ways.
  15. My guess would be Blazing Aura, which does add up, and can be boosted with another power in the primary.

  17. Are there really any disadvantages in doing so? The only disadvantages I can think of are:

    - Loss of the "beginner's luck" accuracy bonus enjoyed by 1-19 characters.

There would appear to be several advantages:

    - Hassles with sidekicks, exemplars, and teams are completely removed, even before i16.
    - Most custom critter focused MA arcs assume SO+ enhancements and slotting.
    - The widest variety of standard and custom characters are available.
    - Most lowbie oriented missions use game standard mobs with only a few customs.
    - Everyone who runs it who's under 50 will be assured to get XP appropriate for their level.

It seems to me that there are very few reasons not to make custom critter stories start at 50; and given the fact that it's hard to create custom critters that don't overwhelm the under 22 set, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
  18. I'd put Pacing of the Turtle Chance for Recharge Slow in there.

My spines/WP scrapper has two of them, one in Caltrops, one in Quills. The one in Quills has a chance to proc every time Quills pulses; not sure about Caltrops. She also has the Dark Watcher Despair, Chance for Recharge Slow in Rise to the Challenge.

Between the three of them, that's a fair amount of recharge slow. And recharge slow is the functional equivalent of defense (i.e. you get hit less often) without paying for, or suboptimally slotting for, defense sets.
  19. Heraclea

    Making A Tanker

Heraclea, the character, existed in my drawings well before she was created in-game in December, 2004.

If I could have picked anything I wanted to, she would have been Super Strength/Super Reflexes. But Super Strength was the defining characteristic, and thus she became Inv/SS, because Super Strength was only available to Tankers.

Note that the text of this arc are in Latin. The goal is fairly straightforward, though, and you don't need to understand them to play. I tried to keep the Latin fairly straightforward; if you have made it to Caesar or the Vulgate you can probably follow it.

  22. One with the Shield is the perfect place to stick that Steadfast Protection Resist/Defense button if that's the only button from that set you're taking. It will work for you even when OwtS is not active.
  23. By varying from my preferred slotting I was able to work up a build that got to over 38% S/L defense. I am currently building an Inv/DM tanker around similar principles.

I'd plan on needing to assemble the Kinetic Combat sets shown here with reward merits. The Reactive Armors probably should be obtained the same way, and that set, being a lower tier set, is easy to get that way.

For the rest, I tried to take advantage of the unusual slotting opportunities that /DM presents. The slotting shown is not my preferred slotting for Siphon Life or Soul Drain, but has been selected with the single goal of physical defense bonuses in mind.

    I call discrimination!

At any rate, there probably isn't a way to flag the story as generally not being in English. And for what it's worth, searching for "Latin" in the story interface fails as well; that pulls in a whole bunch of things with "platinum" and "circulating" as well as Latin. Aspiring Latin story writers probably ought to use "latina" in their descriptions to cut down on some of the false positives.
  25. If you wanted to give six slots to Build Up you could claim the set bonuses that way as well. Gaussian's is a bit low on recharge, but then its only Build Up.

Now, the proc is a boon to Invuln tankers. All of mine try to get that early and put it in Invincibility. Still, I'd hesitate to six slot Invincibility with a to hit buff set alone.

For Willpower, the proc you should consider is Dark Watcher's Despair Chance for Recharge Slow. Put that into Rise to the Challenge. It adds the functional equivalent of defense.
