Ive never had a brute and not sure of the damage output. It will be moved to hero side asap. Just dont know which would be better to play. Any tips or advice would be nice. TYVM

Aw, don't go away and let this thread die. I was just starting to miss the inanity of the drive-by buffing thread, and this was filling that void so perfectly...

Quote:It's funny, but I think I have exactly the same view of blasting/scrapping that you do of tanking. To me, it's pure damage toons like blasters that seem like "key mashing" to me. I've run pretty much every blast combo, and I've become bored very quickly because it's all damage all the time. Sure, there's some different flavors with secondary effects, and some sets have a few more mitigation/mez tricks than others. But at the end of the day, when I'm blasting I feel like I never have to think much; it's just "button press, button press, button press, dead."But to be a Tanker, jumping in the middle of a group of foes and just "key mashing" until they die, I just didn't get all giddy about it.
Tanking, on the other hand (as well as controlling and defending) feels like it forces me to pay more attention to what's happening around me. Sure, I could just wade into mobs and mash away with little fear of reprisal, and sometimes I do just for fun. But, as Heraclea said, I consider myself more of a mama bear. I take it personally if ANY mob hits ANY of my teammates. To prevent that from happening, I have to use all the tricks available to me. I'm normally a whirlwind of movement between positioning groups tightly form AoE goodness, holding/mezzing/knocking down troublesome bosses or lts., and making sure that any stragglers get their focus back on me. Hell, on a full team, I almost NEVER just sit in a mob and mash away.
Anyhow, I realize we're both making gross overgeneralizations about ATs, but I wanted to point out that playstyle can either be constrained or enhanced by the particular ATs. We could probably both find it perfectly possible to bend these ATs to our style and have tons of fun with them. Think I'll go pull my Energy/Energy blaster out of the mothballs... -
Quote:I'll echo what New Dawn said. My first 50 alt of any type was Fire/Ice. I knew nothing of tanking in general or the powersets individually, only that the combo of Burn/Ice Patch sounded fun. I wasn't here for the time when Burn was allegedly uber, so I never knew I was missing anything. Same for comparing to other tank sets' sturdiness. All I knew is he was fun to play; there's nothing like watching a group of enemies flopping around while they burn to death.I had literally tanked into the lvl 40s without ever getting Fitness or Tough because people told me before I made one that I needed them. So much for that.
Having now played most of the other tank sets, I see that Fire/ is a totally different creature. Tanker Ray can't sit in the middle of a warehouse and just take a beating, but that's not how I enjoy playing anyhow. I find that I'm much more active on him when tanking for a large group. I'll either jump over/into a mob, put down Ice Patch/Burn, and then keep moving around to the most dangerous lts. and take them out with Freezing Touch or Char. The damage aura is also wonderfully strong compared to other tanker auras, and I find that mobs stick to me like glue and I never lose aggro. Of course, I have to keep a closer eye on my health than on other tanks, but Healing Flames is such a fast recharging power that this just adds to the active feel of the set.
All in all, if you're having fun playing him, who cares if he's over/underpowered by comparison? Just don't go in expecting him to be a stoner in granite and you'll be fine. For what it's worth, I now consider Ray as more of a tanktroller, or a controller that can take a punch.

Shield/Electric Melee is nifty with Shield Charge and Lightning Strike. EM also has a plethora of PBAoE and Cone attacks.

Yeah, I think the rebreather is likely the one I've seen used. It might have just looked better in my hazy memory than it does on the costume creator. Thanks for the suggestions and the linkies.

Quote:Smurch, I get what you're saying about not wanting/needing the buffs. But I don't understand the SCOPE of your outrage. Yeah, it annoys you when it happens. Does it happen on EVERY mob during EVERY play session? I just can't see it happening enough for it to warrant five pages of complaining about it. Seems to me that it's just one of those things that you ignore the couple times it happens and move on. Seems clear that the other 99% of people either want it or don't care enough to complain. You say that with sarcasm, but that is in fact the problem. I don't necessarily WANT the task to be easier. What fun is there in playing a video game if everything is too easy? Playing the game is the point to, well, playing the game. If I am engaged in a task that has a good level of challenge that makes it fun for me, and someone mitigates that challenge, they've reduced my fun. A victory without the chance of defeat is a hollow one.
What possible fun is there in that if there is no challenge?

Hey forumites. I had a notion for a cow/bull-themed character, but I'm having trouble getting the costume right. I've seen a couple great-looking outfits in-game, but not sure what costume parts they used. I'm basically looking for one of the head options that would give me something close to a bovine snout, once I've colored it black. I think the toons I've seen have used one of the breather options, but none of them look quite right.
Beyond that, I'm wondering what kind of pattern would look best as well. I was thinking a black and white Holstein look, but the polka dots don't look quite right to me. Any of you creative costume designers got any suggestions?

The necessity of taking a travel power early had already been greatly diminished by the temp travel rewards from safeguard missions. Before those, I remember feeling I HAD to take my travel at 14 just to cut all the downtime of getting from mission to mission. As others have already stated, many other factors have made it much easier to get around. With the temps, I found myself waiting on a travel till 30 on most builds, and even till 41/44 on others as I became very good at rationing my temps.
Now with NR, I haven't even bothered taking a travel on any of my new toons. Hell, I've even respecced out of my travel on a few vet toons. If I ever do take a travel again, it will be for concept reasons only. I see that many people have stated that they take them because they find them fun. That's very valid, but I find my fun in powers that I can actively use against mobs/for teammates. The thrill of using SJ or Flight the first time is exhilarating, but after 5 years, I just want to maximize other aspects of my characters.
Helix -
Looks like a fun build. Only thing that jumps out at me is possibly swapping the levels that you're taking Shatter and Weave. You'll only have four attacks till you pick up Shatter at 41 (I never really consider Boxing or the vet attacks as part of a regular attack chain). I think you'll be plenty survivable till 41 without the added defense, but I might be more offensive minded. If you're looking to be as sturdy as you can be as early as you can be, your choice should be fine.

Quote:What level did you get him to? I find almost all tanks very painful on endurance usage till at least 22, sometimes even later, but you should be in the clear once you hit 26 and get Power Sink. It improves with slotting, but it's already terrific out of the box. I found that I never even thought of my end usage after 26 with my Elec/Elec.Actually, I made an EA/Mace Tank as soon as the EA set became available (and he IS a Thor-based character), but I have to admit, I haven't played him much lately. I found the endurance costs just painful to play.

Quote:I also exclusively use Grounded as my KB resist. It works fine, but keep in mind that if you're really active in battle jumping around, or fighting on uneven ground where you might not have contact with the floor at all times, you WILL get knocked down occasionally. It's not enough to compel me to spend slots on -KB I/O's, but it's something to consider if you want your protection to be flawless.Grounded has KB always on cost no end
Also Nry/NegNry Res and Immob gewd stuff there
Helix -
Just throwing in my 2 cents as well.
As most people have alluded to, I think pairing Mace with Electric Armor is a fantastic idea. It will make the mace attacks fire more quickly, and you'll be able to counter the fairly high endurance usage of your attacks with Power Sink.
One unconventional idea you might try is going without a true travel power. My Electric/Electric build was REALLY tight, so I decided to skip my travel and rely on the movement increase from Lighting Reflexes and Swift. I also ended up with a good amount of movement bonuses from I/O sets, though I don't have the numbers off the top of my head. He's at 45 now, and his ground speed is much faster than 3-slotted flight, and he still has 1.5 hours of his jump- and jet-packs if vertical movement is necessary. This could free up a couple slots for Build Up and whatever else that proposed build was lacking.
Finally, you could try slotting Sink and Field fairly heavily for End Mod. I believe I have 2 Recharge/3 End Mod in Sink and 1 Acc/1 Taunt/1 End Mod/2 Damage in Field. Depending on the level you're fighting at, 1 application of Sink will come pretty close to flooring the mobs' blue bars, and Field will further drain them and keep them empty. Of course, this works even better with /Electric as all the attacks further drain the mobs, but you might find it helpful even with /Mace in longer battles.
At the very least, I think you'll find your pairing very speedy and active. You've got me wanting to scrap my baby WP/Mace and try your build instead :-).

A power doesn't necessarily have to be on auto to be considered perma. Perma merely refers to the ability of a power to be available to be activated before or as soon as the power has effect has expired. It's just that many people find it advantageous to leave these powers on auto so they don't have to remember to continually click them.
Helix -
Getting their end floored before they can react might be unrealistic, but I can drain mobs of +3 and keep them pretty much floored on my 39 Elec/Elec. I've got Power Sink slotted with 3 Recharge/3 EndMod and 1 EndMod in Lightning Field to keep them draining. I typically jump in, hit Sink, and then start my attack chain with Chain and Thunderstrike. That usually floors all their blue bars, and the EndMod in Field keeps them drained. On good teams, mobs are often dead so quick that I don't notice the drain, except in protracted battles. Solo, however, it's terrific mitigation. Especially in RWZ with the energy resist from Elec armor, I just jump into huge mobs of Rikti and kill at my leisure while they can't fight back.
Helix -
On a similar note, is it working as intended if I get missions with nothing but Lts.? Been running some solo missions with a scrapper on the default difficulty. In one mission, I'll get what I consider a standard type of mob setup; 2 white-conning minions and 1 yellow-conning Lt. Next mish, I'll get no minions and nothing but 1 or even 2 orange-conning Lts. for spawns. I could understand if I were getting a mix within each mission, but it seems to be all or nothing, 2 mins/1 Lt. or all Lts. Enemy group doesn't seem to matter, though it's really annoying if it happens to be Tsoo and nothing but Sorcerers on a toon with no controls.
Helix -
My Elec/Elec is the most fun I've had tanking in a long time. While not as durable as some of my other tanks, the fun factor is off the charts. Just got Lightning Rod, which just adds to the multi-target chaos of Jacob's Ladder, Chain Lightning, and Thunderstrike. I feel like his damage outpaces both my Fire/Ice and my Inv/SS. I get a load of mitigation in the form of Power Sink; got it slotted with 2 Recharge and 3 EndMods. I just hop in, hit Sink, then my AoE attack chain, and it pretty much floors everybody's blue bars. Threw and EndMod into Lightning Field to help keep them drained. It's funny to stand in the middle of a huge mob and watch them stand around unable to attack. For the record, I'm typically running either solo at +1/5 or in 3-4 person groups at +2/5. I think I could easily bump up either difficulty or spawn size and still roll. Anyhow, sorry to be so long-winded, but I think you'll find that it's a power pairing that's fun and fairly novel.

You nailed it Aett...I confused myself, too. I had subbed upper case I for lower case L. Got too cute for my own good and now I feel foolish. Problem solved, thanks for the assist.
Helix -
Hey Folks,
I've got a little problem. I had squatted on a couple of "Electric" names in anticipation of rolling up a few Elec/Elec tanks once I16 hit. Since just about every name I wanted was already in use, I swapped out a lower case L for an upper case I in a couple of them. Now that 16 has dropped, I went in to delete the name and roll up my new toons. Only problem is, it doesn't seem to be working. The "type the character's name" feature is case-sensitive, so I originally tried typing it in as it appears. No good. Then I tried with the L for I substitution that I used originally. Again, no good, as this results in "ELectric" instead of "Electric" in the proper field. Any suggestions? As it stands now, I purchased three extra slots that are now blocked with these names, and the names are now taken so I can't just use another slot. Any help would be most appreciated,

It's possible. Did so on a Psyche TF the other night.
