I HATE that protection software. It does nothing but screw up your system, and hackers, etc. get around it anyway.
It's silly, too, as games without protection can do just fine (in the case of Galactic Civilizations II, it was a selling point not to have it, and I know people that went out of their way to buy it just for that fact alone... good thing it was a very good space strategy game, too). Not quite as asinine as the music industry suing ordinary consumers, but still dumb.
Anyway, I hope they drop it. -
Ummm, yeah. I never understand this attitude. "I teamed with 'x' Archetype and they screwed everything, why are they all so stupid?"
That's like blaming a perfectly good car for being an accident because a drunk driver was behind the wheel. Blacklisting an AT makes no sense at all. Keep track of the crummy players with your rating and don't play with them again, but pay no attention to the AT.
Kheldians, like any AT in the game, can do some great and amazing things... especially depending on the person driving the Kheldian. I've received positive comments about my Peacebringer when I've run it (heard a lot of "man, you make me want to go play Kheldian"), and played with Kheldians that do some spectacular things. But then I've played with some that make me wonder what the heck those people are thinking, they're that bad.
But that's true of every AT I've played with, which is all of them. -
Had fun defending the beaches of Grandville from Nemesis... at least until we had to destroy the mole machines. What an annoying waste of time that was. It was still fun to see the explosions send people flying, I guess. Heh. Still not sure what was up with that group of 5 or so Warhulks that jumped on us, but that was a fun wrinkle... wish that had happened with every machine.

Quote:Cool, I appear to be channeling Ian MacKellan's persona then. I guess I'll have to call people a "fool of a Took" when they screw things up, rather than just blaming it on Voo.I can't help it, but I read Grey Pilgrim's posts in Gandalf's voice in my head, but in the style of Magneto. It sounds wise and powerful.

Quick other note on asking questions. Don't be afraid of your teachers... some random teachers are cranky gits that won't want to give you the time of day, but almost all teachers will want to help. I can't think of anyone in my department that is really hateful... a few oddballs, but they're all basically nice people.
I honestly don't know what it is that holds people back from asking questions... I don't THINK I'm "scary" or anything, and I am up front about saying I am willing to ask questions. It's rather frustrating as a teacher... as I said, I've had a lot of students ask questions weeks after they should have, and they could have saved a lot of headaches on their part (and mine) if they had asked sooner. Still, I know from my student days that sometimes I'd be nervous about talking to teachers, so maybe it's just a general feeling everyone has. No matter what it is, it is in any learner's best interest to get the most help they can from their teachers, etc. Go forth and explore! Ask questions! -
I've often thought that buffs and debuffs in this game were overpowered, especially after all the "we don't need Tankers, we have tons of Defenders, etc." hate I've run into over the years. It'd be a tough balancing act, as you wouldn't want to punish a team that has a bunch of Defs, Controllers, etc., too much, either. Heh, I rather wonder if the devs have been avoiding it for those reasons.
Though other things in the game are probably balanced somewhat on the prevalance of all the buffs and debuffs. Not sure I'd want to take on Reichsman as he is now with DR.
No matter what, hopefully they go somewhere good with all this. -
Quote:Okay... that's bad design. I hate, hate, hate that jerks in WoW can run around doing this to people (at least they used to). It might make it more artificial, but PvP really needs to be separated out more for me to like it (separation seems okay to me in CoX). I think what really made me quit WoW (though I was already kind of fed up with it after falling behind my friends I was playing with) was when I got ganked for the 5th time while trying to complete PvE content. Yes, I was on a PvP server, so I knew what I was in for, but I just hated that I couldn't get anything done in PvE without a bunch of friends, and that all the PvP was really "hey, there's a Horde wizard over there... I'll gank him after he's tired and almost dead from fighting a bunch of monsters." Seriously. I did fine in PvP when I had at least a third of my health to start, but I was constantly ganked at almost death by Alliance pricks. It got old, fast. All in all my experience has been fairly good with the exception of the L20 guy camping the arena quest contact inside the arena that was just killing people 10 levels lower than him just to be an as$.
Also, I'm basing what I said off of Des... he said something to the effect that the devs there say you should be able to level up in PvE, but that the game doesn't testify to that (sorry if I misquoted you, Des, but I thought that's what you said in the Discussion section). Hopefully not, as it does look somewhat interesting (though I'm not keen on the Japanese RPG look of the character skins... that look is part of why I haven't really tried any of the Final Fantasy games lately), but I just was running with what I heard. -
Des said in another thread that Aion is rather PvP oriented the farther you go, which worries me. In my experience, PvP is rarely balanced in any game (even FPS games suffer from this), and I'd rather not be unable to advance in an MMO because the class I chose is the current whipping boy in the game's setup. I'm not sure what classes I'd want to play in Aion (or if you can have many alts in-game), but I know I'd want to be able to play melee classes, who sound like they are up a creek right now in PvP for Aion.
I know most of us are over the hurdle, but MMO's do have a bigger entry fee than other games, especially if they keep adding stuff with fees attached and still charge a monthly fee. It's hard to justify investing that much in a game unless you know you're going to be around for awhile to enjoy it. I was only able justify getting a booster pack in CoX after a LONG time because we had enough cash and I knew I'd be playing the game enough to make it worth it.
Anyway, that's why I hope both games have some kind of free trial... I want to know what I'm getting into with any game, but especially an MMO. -
Yeah, they can't just be thinking of improving a 50's capabilities, as IOs and Purples put that way over anything you're really going to face in game right now. I would guess they're going to give us that and more tough content to justify it.
The only problem there is it still makes older content laughable, unless the universal enhancements or whatever they're working on only kicks in with the tougher content.
I'm interested in all this for sure, as I want to be able to keep running my 50s. I do sometimes, but I generally try not to flashback with them too much, as I don't want to be bored with things when one of my alts is in that level range. But then I'm not so interested, as the thought of improving one of my IO'd out 50s holds no interest if it's just a cash requirement like PVP or Purple IOs... I have to do that enough just getting regular IOs, and the cost of PVPs and Purples makes my regular IO builds look like nothing. And I take long enough to afford those already (and no, I do not want to grind content to afford things... that would be boredom for me).
Now if there is actual content we have to play through to get those improvements, I'm more interested in that idea. Not so much if it requires a big 30 man raid a la WoW, but if it's an interesting and tough TF or story arc (or series of TFs and story arcs), I'd be interested. -
Quote:Eh, it's always the threat of the other guy (or "the grass is always greener") that gets people going. Tanks feel threatened by the damage capability of brutes, and how much they can be buffed. It can look bad on paper, and from the experience of some extreme power gamers. But then most of the Brutes you see have difficulty taking the alpha alone for their 8-man team (even 2 Brutes can get into trouble), whereas my Fire/Fire or WP/DB Tanker hardly break a sweat doing the same thing. Tanks could maybe use some help in the endurance department, but that's about it.Good points. I have to say, though, that the complaints on the Tanker boards have always been the most amusing to me.
It's the same thing with this thread. Blasters are ridiculously good at damage. They're not going to be outdone on teams in that role, especially by melee fighters. And solo, they are a bit trickier, but they can handle anything they face. It's the tradeoff of being able to do all that damage up close and at range. My Scrappers and Tankers are very survivable and can defeat stuff, too. But not with the ease and speed that my Blasters can. Actually, in comparing those three, Blasters are more fun solo, as they take a bit more thought... my MA/Regen Scrapper just races in and kicks the crap out of stuff, only pausing to heal once in awhile.
The change to Defiance was pretty much all the AT needed... some powersets for Blasters may need a tweak or two, but the AT is fine. -
Stupid new forums... I didn't even see all these replies... I have to stop looking for the little arrow by threads, as it's meaningless. It'll sometimes be threads where I am the newest poster, and it never showed for any of these.
Anyway, what are the thoughts on the more "cartoony" looks of DC and CO? I can see some liking them for superhero MMOs, but I dunno. I kind of like the more realistic look CoX has. I liked the cartoony bit with other superhero games, so I'm not sure why I like it more here. Seems more legitimate, or something? Heh. -
That probably would be the best thing, other than swapping RPD and TI. However, swapping power order seems to be a BIG thing to do (not sure why, if it's just a dev philosophy like the cottage rule, or if it's a lot of work, or what), as the devs don't do it very much.
-
Not seeing anything for codes on Fileplanet for either game, right now.
Sorry to see you go, NancY.
I really hope GR has a LOT of content... I think that's about the biggest thing CO has going for it against CoX, since it's all new stuff. -
Can anyone join the open beta, or how does it work? I can't really figure stuff out from their site. I'm willing to see what Aion and CO are like, just to put things in perspective, but that's curiousity (which means I ain't payin'! Heh), so I'd need to get in open beta or a trial if they ever have them.
I've found reading up about MMOs just doesn't fly, as they all start sounding and looking the same, in all honesty. Hence the want to play them. -
Quote:This is very, very true. I teach at a university, and I'm boggled at how willing students can be to waste their education. Some are there because their parents are paying/making them (in which case, I have to sarcastically thank the parents for sending their completely uninterested kid into my classroom), but there are plenty that seem to forget that they chose to go to school and are paying a LOT for it. I do my best to teach my classes well and help my students out, and it bothers me when students don't ask questions. If I had a nickel for every time a student said "oh, I wish I had asked this weeks ago, it all makes sense now," I would be a very rich man.Tonality just reminded me of something else.
You're now going from EDUCATION BY LAW to EDUCATION BY CHOICE.
Get the most you can out of it, LEARN all you can. Do all your work, ask your professors all the questions you can. Why? Because YOU are PAYING for it. Why not get the most for your money?
I wish someone had told me that when I was going in.
So don't sit on your questions, ask them. Engage with that education you're paying for. Yes, part of the whole experience is making friends, having fun, etc., but you are paying for the education part. You could make friends and have fun out of college, and for a lot cheaper. So don't neglect that education part.
Time management really is key for college, as well. Figure out how long you need to write a good paper, to study for that test, etc. Some people take longer or shorter than others, and you have to find out what works for you. You also need to balance out with your other classes, and your own fun time. If you can't resist not gaming or something else, avoid it, but you should be able to balance doing fun things, studying, and working. I did all three in college (I played video games, Ultimate Frisbee, and a lot of other fun things, not to mention working a lot, and got a 3.5 in college, so it can be done). -
Voo is running one with his Tuesday TF thingy at 8:30 EST. Dunno if that works for your schedule, but I figured I would point it out.
-
Which means content is content. You'll lose set bonuses if you go beyond the level of your IOs (unless they're purples, but I slot with low 30 IOs so I can exemp to a good amount of content without losing bonuses and still getting good enhancement numbers), but it doesn't matter what you do. Get some merits, do a TF you feel like doing, etc. It happens now with TFs, and now it'll keep happening with them AND missions at that level.
If you're refusing to do lower level TFs with your 50 now, this change isn't going to affect that. But more reward options for no matter what content you're doing and at what level is a good thing... people will go join their friends, go for some merits, etc. It's a win for all. I'm all for grains of salt and being pessimistic about things meriting it (I'm not keen on the higher xps for the 1-20s, for instance), but I don't think you can be that pessimistic about this.
Lastly, do we know how much xp you will get when exemping down? You're talking like it will automatically be lower than you would get at higher levels, but I haven't heard any evidence of that, and it would make more sense for the devs to keep the xp the same as if you had not exemped down. -
Few weeks, probably, but I would agree that this can't come soon enough, now. I wish for it whenever I'm running a team and have to think if I have enough SKs and such.

I believe he is referring to a post by Castle where he mentioned or asked whether Invulnerability needed some +regen to round things off. Because damage will get through and slowly stack up, and Dull Pain isn't necessarily enough to handle all that. As I mentioned earlier, I don't think anything has been posted by a dev since then, and that was back at the time of the boosts to Invulnerability.
-
You still have to prove that there is some reason to merit changing things up, which is time and effort on the part of the devs. If Invuln is on par with other sets, especially for the first 20 or so levels you are discussing for these changes, then such a change would not be warranted. In the case of changing Temp. Invulnerability's name, it probably would make sense, and not be that much work, or so I would guess, so you might get something there if you bring it up in a PM.
As it is, Invulnerability is plenty solid for its whole career, and is hardly weaker than other sets prior to level 20. RPD can be nice for times you are low on endurance and don't want to run TI, and of course the two stack quite nicely (unslotted, you're only 7% lower resists to Smash/Lethal than Fiery Aura gets slotted from its primaries). This is even nicer when you think about how much of the damage in those first 20 or so levels is mostly smash/lethal. Sure, a bit more defense would be nice, but all tanker sets don't have all their "tricks" yet at that point. WP can't get defense until 18, either, Fiery Aura doesn't have all its offense (same for Shields, not to mention all its defenses), Ice doesn't get Energy Absorption until 26, etc.
Again, Invulnerability overall might need some regen somewhere, as Castle once suggested himself (not sure what happened to that, if he's still planning on it, or looked at it and decided not to), but other than that, it's pretty solid. My Invuln Tanker is a little behind my WP Tanker in levels (35 as opposed to 49), but I haven't found Invlun to play particuarly weaker, and I'm running most of the same content with him. They just play different, Tanking well overall.
Remember, to get a change, the burden of proof falls on you to proove such a change is warranted. That's how it is. -
Just type "/chanjoin " and then the name of the channel you want to join, like "Victory Forum" or something like that. Once you've joined the channel, you may have to adjust your tabs so you will see people talking in those channels. To type in that channel, you can just right click in your text area and select the channel you want to write in.
If that doesn't cover it, clarify what you need and someone will clear it up. -
Sidetrack, I know, but the main reason I don't want my students using Wikipedia (I'm a college instructor that mostly teaches writing) is because it's not a primary source. Any encyclopedia gets its info from somewhere else and is also going to be generalist: if you're writing a paper of any sort in high school or college, you should NOT be using an encyclopedia as a source, other than maybe to get a general idea what a topic is about.
From my reading and research of Wikipedia, it actually is pretty accurate, especially if you can see where the info is cited from. I forget what the exact numbers were that one study found, but Wikipedia has about the same amount of errors as the other major Encyclopedias like New Britannica, etc. It's no match for a peer-reviewed journal article, of course, but it can do okay.
It's certainly more accurate than a lot of stuff you see on the internet and in forums. -
Talnar, you might have more luck in the Screenshots & Fan Creations section of the forums, though I'm not sure if any of the better artists will spring for in-game currency to do so, of course. Pretty much the only Victoryite I know of that does art and is in this section at all is Lousy Day, and he doesn't post too much. He's a good artist, though.
You'll probably also want to see the artist's style ahead of time, to know they have a look you like. -
Not sure what you're looking for when you say "team." Are you looking for a Supergroup? Some people to play with regularly?
If so, I'm not sure why they need to be from NJ... if you're that specific with a group search, you probably won't find what you want. The people in my Supergroup are from all over the U.S., and that's pretty common for any group I've heard of. Themes can make sense, but location in real life, not so much... unless you're just hanging with friends, which it doesn't sound like you're doing.
